B In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift. On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its splendour. Rushing home, I popped the exposed film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it came out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when I processed the film I got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing. As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change. I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought a new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me. The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I’ve taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight. 24. What was the main purpose of the author using the camera in his youth? A. To document his school life. B. To capture the beauty of nature. C. To develop professional skills. D. To participate in photography competitions. 25. How did the author’s feelings towards the camera change as he grew up? A. His interest in photography deepened. B. He felt the camera was just a burden. C. He gradually forgot about the camera. D. He longed to purchase more advanced equipment. 26. How has the author’s life been since he reused the camera? A. Stressful. B. Depressing. C. Joyful. D. Boring. 27. Why does the author display camera equipment and photos in his room? A. To remind him of his happy time. B. To show off his achievement. C. To record his prizes in younger years. D. To bring happiness to his family. C From stealing chips to swallowing whole starfish, gulls are known for their greedy appetites. However, one scientist was so shocked to see pictures on social media of gulls eating “strange and wonderful things” that she launched a citizen science project to study their shifting diets. “By studying gulls’ diet, we can learn more about their behavior, their role in ecosystems and the pressures they face in a changing world,” Dr Alice Risely said. UK seabirds face threats from warming oceans, overfishing and avian flu, with several species on the UK red list of conservation concern. Some gulls are coming to live closer to people, adding human leftovers to their natural menu of fish, crabs, starfish and earthworms. The birds may be flocking to urban areas to find food to feed their babies during the breeding season, switching back to a natural diet once their youngsters have fledged Alternatively, gulls may be relying on human leftovers for much of the year as the natural food supply drops. One particularly striking photograph shows a gull eating a baby bird. It was taken by scientist Samuel Schmidt on a trip to the Farne Islands. Getting more information on what gulls are eating — in proximity to people and as the climate changes — “could be very enlightening”, he said. “The gull wasn’t malicious (恶意的); it was just hungry,” he added. Gulls are known to eat other birds, including pigeons. “The fact is we just really don’t know — there is very little data,” said Dr Risely. “This is why we wanted to exploit this resource of online photos to try and help us understand what the gulls are eating, and if there are any patterns we can find.” The UK is known for its huge habitats of seabirds nesting on cliffs. Now, gulls are in trouble in their natural spaces — and some species are seeking habitats in coastal cities. There is very little data on the number of urban gulls — but natural populations are regularly monitored, showing big declines. 28. What inspired Risely to start a citizen science project? A. Her interest in seabirds. B. An online post about gulls. C. The changing diets of seabirds. D. The strange gulls with great appetites. 29. What happened to the gulls in Paragraph 2? A. They have a preference for urban life. B. They entered the list of protected birds. C. They have enough natural food. D. They depend more on humans for food. 30. How did Samuel think of a gull eating a bird? A. Destructive. B. Harmful. C. Normal. D. Unusual. 31. What can we learn from Risely’s words in the last paragraph? A. Most seabirds in the UK are endangered. B. Photos on the Internet aren’t believable. C. Urban gulls deserve more protection. D. More information on gulls is needed. D With increasing pressures on food system, new technologies are emerging to address these global challenges, among which is electro-agriculture. At its core, electro-agriculture is about replacing sunlight with electricity to facilitate plant growth by converting carbon dioxide and water into molecules (分子) that plants can process. While the technology is still in its experimental phase, early studies have shown promising results. In lab settings, Professor Feng Jiao and his team have achieved success growing mushrooms. The team’s current experiments are focused on tomatoes, lettuce and other small-scale crops, with hopes to extend to high-calorie crops like grains and sweet potatoes in the future. One of the most impressive applications of electro-agriculture is its potential to alleviate food insecurity, particularly in regions where local food production is unsuccessful. “We hope the technology can be implemented in locations where traditional agriculture is very difficult,” Jiao says. “Particularly concerning is climate change — places that used to be good land for growing things may not be possible in the future, so this may become a way to stabilize the food supply to the world.” However, according to Harold, an expert on soil and water management, the question of whether this technology will be effective is still “up in the air”. “Does it actually solve a problem, or is it just a novel way of growing plants?” he asks. “It’s not going to solve the global food shortage issues because it’s too complex and probably too inefficient from a financial perspective.” Despite electro-agriculture’s potential several challenges must be addressed before it can be scaled globally. First, electro-agriculture relies on electricity to drive the chemical reactions that nourish plants, and scaling this process to feed large populations would require an enormous amount of power. While the technology could significantly reduce the amount of land used for food production, the resources it would require to build and run the infrastructure could be significant. Besides, one of the key barriers to the technology is demonstrating to the public that the food produced through electro-agriculture is safe to consume. 32. What can we know about electro-agriculture? A. It has been successfully used to grow high-calorie crops. B It can transform carbon dioxide into water. C. It has been used widely around the world. D. It is free from the dependence on sunshine. 33. What does the underlined word “alleviate” probably mean? A. Ease. B. Ensure. C. Affect. D. Change. 34. What is Harold’s attitude towards electro-agriculture? A. Skeptical. B. Positive. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned. 35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A. The public’s concern about electro-agriculture. B. The challenges in promoting new types of crops. C. The main factors restricting electro-agriculture. D. The potentials in developing electro-agriculture. Traffic Regulation and Accident Prevention We live in a remarkable time and many of the once fatal diseases can now be cured with modern medicine and surgery. It is almost certain that one day a cure will be found for the rest of the diseases. ____36____ But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man fights against the motor car. ____37____ Every year thousands of people are horribly killed, and we sit still and let it happen. Nothing can seriously increase your risk of potentially fatal car accidents more than speeding and failing to pay due attention to weather conditions. Someone has rightly said that when a person is sitting behind the wheel, his car becomes an extension of his personality. ____38____ Usually quiet and pleasant people, when behind the wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite, aggressive, self-willed like a two-year-old, and completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving. Surprisingly, society should smile at drivers and forgive them. It’s all for their own convenience. Due to a serious tragedy, the city is almost uninhabitable; moreover, the huge parking lots make the town ugly. The destruction of rural areas and the annual mass killings are just statistics, easily forgotten. ____39____ Traffic rules are for everyone to follow, and no one can make an exception unless they make a joke of their own life. Universally accepted standards can only have a significant benefit on the incidence of accidents. Governments should develop safety standards for manufacturers. All advertisements that emphasize power and performance should be banned. ____40____ However, if these measures result in a reduction in the loss of life every year, they should be taken seriously. After all, the world belongs to humans, not cars. A. These measures may sound cruel. B. Expectations of life have greatly increased. C. Controlling the steering wheel correctly is a must. D. Humans can easily stay away from disease. E. It is a never-ending battle that man is losing. F. In terms of driving, the laws of some countries are not strict. G. There is no doubt that the motor car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. While laid up with a medical issue over the last week, I’ve blogged more than usual. My heart sank. I had been stuck in bed nursing my aching knee, hoping and praying it wasn’t anything serious again. Unfortunately, it had never healed correctly following a previous surgery by another specialist. My geographically distant family members would sometimes call to offer medical advice or a pep talk (打气), encouraging me to try harder to find a solution. I understood their good intentions, but following these conversations I would often cry for hours in frustration. I didn’t have any idea where else to look for answers. So, I learned to hide my situation. Thankfully, being able to write was my saving grace. I wrote columns for local newspapers and book anthologies, and even authored an inspirational novel. On social media, I posted smiling photos and avoided mentioning the health issues that would keep me housebound. I sincerely endeavored to stay positive, hold onto my faith, and trust that there would be a solution until the fated MRI report of the seriously reinjured knee on Christmas Eve. When this happened, I didn’t have any emotional or spiritual strength left in me to fight. As time went by, my hopelessness grew. One desperate night, I tossed and turned, sobbing into my pillow until dawn. That morning, with my eyes swollen from lack of sleep and crying, I threw on my clothes, grabbed my crutches (拐杖), and decided to take a drive to calm my troubled mind. It was cold outside. Thankfully, the coffee shop’s atmosphere was peaceful and inviting. Emptying the large cup, I headed back out to my car. By then, students who lived in the neighborhood were making their way to both the elementary and middle schools nearby. The youngsters chatted and laughed together while walking on the sidewalk. Then, I saw a little girl in a wheelchair, pushed by a woman. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When the little girl stood up, I saw she had only one leg. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024~2025学年高二年级教学质量监测卷(八) 英语 注意事项: 1. One possible version: Then, I saw a little girl in a wheelchair, pushed by a woman. Maybe she was ten; I didn’t know her age. What I did know was that the child-sized wheelchair converted my feeling-sorry-for-myself emotion into compassion for a child whose burden was far heavier than mine. My lesson wasn’t over. The little girl seemed to be pleading with the lady, who must have been her mother. She wanted to walk like the other kids, but she also needed to use her crutches. I watched as the small girl pushed herself from the wheelchair into a standing position. When the little girl stood up, I saw she had only one leg. Fighting back my tears, I circled the block to make sure that what I had observed was real. There she was again, defiantly hobbling along on crutches, with her head held high. I truly believed that this girl was saying, “Be strong.” I had a choice to make. I could push through self-pity and choose to live my life positively and be thankful for what I could do, or I could be forever miserable, contemplating what I couldn’t. Unquestionably, I chose the former. Excuse me, what time is IT?
