When I was in high school, school was a big part of my life. I spent most of my days there, learning new things and having fun with my friends. But one experience really stood out and has stayed with me.
One sunny morning in my first year of high school, my English teacher came into the classroom with a big smile. She told us that we would be putting on a musical at the end of the year. I had always loved singing and dancing, but I had never really tried it before. This was a chance I decided to catch.
During the practices, I was filled with both excitement and nervousness. Sometimes I would forget my words and feel really worried, my heart beating wildly in my chest. But when we performed well, I felt so proud and happy, like we had achieved something truly special. Through all these ups and downs, my classmates and I became really close. We laughed together, encouraged each other, and shared our fears and hopes. We became a team, working together towards a common goal.
On the night of the musical, I stood behind the curtains waiting for my turn. I couldn’t believe how far we had come. We had worked so hard and now we were ready to show everyone what we could do. Then the curtains opened and we started performing in front of a full audience. When we finished, thunderous applause filled the hall. I felt a sense of pride that I had never felt before.
This experience taught me a lot. I learned how important it is to work together as a team and to keep trying even when things are hard. I also learned that it’s good to try new things and step out of my comfort zone.
Looking back, I’m really thankful for that opportunity and all the lessons it taught me. It was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. So, I encourage everyone to step into the unknown and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. You never know what amazing memories and lessons they might bring.
4. How did the author feel about the musical at first?
A. Eager. B. Worried. C. Nervous. D. Hesitant.

A. The author played the leading role. B. The classmates didn’t get along well.
C. The performance was a great success. D. The author used to act in many plays.
7. What does the author inspire others to do?
A. To show thanks. B. To try new things.
C. To act in musicals. D. To leave nice memories.

Bees do a lot more than just make honey. In fact, many kinds do not make honey at all. And yet, regardless of whether they produce sweet honey or not, bees are an important part of any ecosystem. Without the intense work of pollination (授粉) these flying insects carry out, the world would look very different.
Clancy Lester, a 23-year-old ecologist known as “The Bee Man”, is on a mission to preserve solitary (独居的) bees by building them structures in which they can nest and lay eggs.
Lester’s passion for insects started during his stay with the Yolngu people in Australia’s Northern Territory. There, he witnessed the deep connection between the Yolngu and their native bee species, which are not only a treasured part of their traditional diets but also involved in their cultural stories and songs. However, he observed a troubling decline in these bee populations, largely due to habitat loss and harmful chemical use in agriculture. This stirred a deep desire within Lester to take action.
Today, working with schools and communities, Lester is actively conducting workshops that instruct people to create structures with multiple “rooms” to serve as a temporary (临时的) home for many kinds of bees. “Not all bees live in hives. In fact, many of them are solitary animals, and they need places to take shelter and lay eggs,” Lester said. The rooms follow the natural habitats where bees thrive, and are called bee hotels. Besides, he encourages families and individuals to grow native plants and transform roadside spaces into welcoming environments to improve insect biodiversity.
“It’s a simple and effective way to recreate natural environments,” Lester added, stressing how these little structures can stir curiosity and connection with native pollinators. As people begin to notice the signs of bees in their gardens, they become more interested in protecting these wonderful creatures.
Lester also shared a wealth of resources online, guiding anyone interested in building their own bee hotels. So far, he has overseen the creation of 800 of these delightful structures throughout Australia.
8. What caused Lester to determine to protect bees?
A. His passion for all kinds of insects.
B. His interactions with the Yolngu people.
C. The sharp decline of honey production.
D. The terrible situation bee populations face.
9. What is the primary function of bee hotels?
A. To replace natural bee habitats.
B. To store honey produced by bees.
C. To attract tourists interested in insects.
D. To provide temporary homes for solitary bees.
10. Which of the following can best describe Lester?
A. Careful and generous.
B. Observant and devoted.
C. Confident and humorous.
D. Knowledgeable and talkative.
11. What can be inferred about the impact of Lester’s work?
A. It has significantly reduced habitat loss.
B. It has led to a full recovery of bee populations.
C. It has raised awareness of preserving pollinators.
D. It has ensured secure habitats for all pollinators.
D
The decision to act properly with first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Begin by introducing yourself to the injured or ill person. Explain that you are a first aid provider and are willing to help. The person must give you permission to help them; do not touch them until they agree to be helped. If you run into a confused person or someone who is seriously injured or ill, you can assume that they would want you to help them. This is known as “implied consent”.
The first step in any emergency is the recognition of the problem and providing help. When in doubt or when someone is seriously injured or ill, you should always activate the emergency response system by calling 911 in the United States, or your own locality’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) number. If you’ re not sure how serious the situation is, the 911/EMS operator will ask you a series of questions to determine the severity of the situation.
Remain on the line until additional help arrives, or until the 911/EMS operator tells you to hang up. Emergency system operators can guide you through the steps of performing CPR (心肺复苏术) or delivering basic care until additional help arrives.
Whether you are at home, work, or school, know where the first aid kits are kept and be familiar with their contents. Know how to activate the EMS in your area. Be aware of any policies in the workplace regarding medical emergencies.
After determining the problem, the next step in providing help is to determine the responsiveness of the injured or ill person. The best way to determine this is to tap the person and talk loudly to them, “Are you okay?” After determining responsiveness, call for help. Look for any medical identifications, such as a necklace or a bag. This may provide a valuable clue to the cause of the situation.
12. What does the underlined word “consent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Agreement. B. Danger.
C. Helpfulness. D. Refusal.
13. What’s the most important step to make sure your first aid is necessary?
A. Giving first aid as quickly as possible.
B. Asking the injured or ill many questions.
C Analyzing conditions of the injured or ill.
D. Moving the victims to the roadside and wait.
14. How can you know the responsiveness of the injured or ill person?
A. By letting them call for help.
B. By communicating with them.
C. By checking their temperature.
D. By finding any identifications.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. How to determine responsiveness.
B. Some additional first aid measures.
C. The weaknesses of some first aid.
D. How to ask for victims’ permission.

One sunny morning during a school outing, Mrs Green took her students to her village. In the village, her family owned a mango orchard (杧果园) and a nursery (苗圃) where they grew a variety of beautiful roses.
All the students were filled with excitement. They joyfully ate mangoes from the orchard. As it was time to leave, Mrs Green gathered the students together and said, “Children, today we’ve had a wonderful time here, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the delicious mangoes. But sometimes we may ignore the beautiful things around us, just like these mangoes. It is extremely important to value everything that is right before our eyes.”
A student named Henry raised his hand and asked, “But Mrs Green, how do we tell which thing is good or not?” Mrs Green replied gently, “Let’s understand this through a small game. Henry, go to the mango orchard and bring me the biggest mango you can find. But remember, once you move ahead, you cannot go back.”
Henry nodded determinedly and walked into the orchard. He began carefully observing each mango, his eyes examining every branch. With every mango he saw, Henry thought to himself, “Maybe a bigger mango lies ahead. I can’t settle for this one.” So, he kept moving forward, his steps steady. He passed by one tree after another, leaving many mangoes behind. As he walked deeper into the orchard, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of expectation. But when he reached the end of the orchard, his face fell. He realized that the biggest mango was on the first tree he had passed. Disheartened, Henry hung his head and returned empty-handed. With a heavy heart, he shared his experience with Mrs Green.
Mrs Green smiled and said, “This is where we often make mistakes in life. In search of something better, we ignore what is right in front of us and miss out on great opportunities and wonderful things.”

5. What do we know about the author during the practices?
A. He forgot the lines due to his bad memory. B. He experienced a mix of feelings.

12 What does the underlined word “consent” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Agreement. B. Danger.
C. Helpfulness. D. Refusal.
13. What’s the most important step to make sure your first aid is necessary?
A. Giving first aid as quickly as possible.
B. Asking the injured or ill many questions.
C. Analyzing conditions of the injured or ill.

【答案】Mrs Green then gave another task to Henry: getting the reddest rose from the nursery. Henry took a deep breath, deciding not to mess up again. When he stepped into the nursery, the sweet smell of red roses hit him right away. He looked around, thinking, “I won’t miss the best one this time.” Soon, his eyes fell on a lovely red rose. “That’s it!” he said to himself. Without thinking twice, he reached out and picked it. Holding the rose tightly, he walked back to Mrs Green, feeling proud of himself.
Mrs Green smiled and praised Henry’s self-trust this time. “Good job, Henry! You made the right choice,” she said. Henry felt happy and a bit shy. “I understand now,” he replied. Mrs Green nodded. “In our lives, we often look far away for good things, but they may be just around us. We should cherish what we have.” Henry learned an important lesson that he should value the people and things close to him, and he would do so from then on, because they were truly precious.
