For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare, exotic species.
That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality.
In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists ventured into an isolated tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mist-covered region. “As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around, ” Bexler says.
Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeaters — the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.
The honeyeater wasn’t the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species — 13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. “We were like kids in a candy store,” Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before.”
The newfound species didn’t shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas — primitive egg-laying mammals — let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater.
Bexler thinks the animals weren’t scared because they had never seen humans before. “In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people,” he explains. “This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people. ”
Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia. Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outer-edges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10-day walk from the nearest village.
Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area completely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. “We just scratched the surface,” Bexler says. “Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery.”
4. Which word can best describe Bruce Bexler?
A. Adventurous. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. Careful.
5. What does Bruce Bexler mean by saying “We were like kids in a candy store”?
A. They didn’t have enough food and were hungry.
B. They were very excited about what they saw.
C. They were misbehaving like naughty children.
D. They knew that if they kept searching, they’d find sugar in the forest.
6. What can we conclude about the area Bruce Bexler explored?
A. The best way to explore the area is by helicopter.
B. The locals live in the centre of the forest.
C. The area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science.
D. The locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.
C
About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table. I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy --- who could not have been more than 7 or 8 years old ---replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident(小事件) stuck in my mind because it confirmed(证实) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on innate biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.
7. According to the author, feeling depressed is ________.
A. a sure sign of a mental problem in children
B. a mental state present in all humans, including children
C. something that can’t be avoided in children’s mental development
D. something hardly to be expected in a young child
8. Traditionally, a child is supposed to learn about the adult world _________.
A. through connection with society B. gradually and under guidance(引导)
C. naturally without being taught D. through watching television
9. According to the author, that today’s children seem adultlike results from __________.
A. the widespread influence of television
B. the poor arrangement of teaching content
C. the fast pace of human scientific development
D. the rising standard of living
10 What does the author think of communication through print for children?
A. It enables children to gain more social information
B. It develops children’s interest in reading and writing.
C. It helps children to read and write well.
D. It can control what children are to learn.
11. What does the author think of the change in today’s children?
A. He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny
B. He thinks the change worth our attention
C. He considers it a rapid development
D. He is extremely upset about it
D
Roughly 42% of Americans are nearsighted today, compared to 25% in 1971. The World Health Organization predicts that about half of the world’s population will have nearsightedness by 2050. It’s apparent that our eyesight is becoming increasingly poor, but researchers are only now beginning to understand why.
Generally a childhood phenomenon, nearsightedness happens when the eyeball grows too long from front to back, taking on more of an oval (椭圆形) shape rather than a sphere (球形). Eyes have a “stop signal” so that they grow corresponding with the head, explains Gregory Schwartz, an associate professor at Northwestern University. However, that signal can be interrupted by genetic and environmental factors, which leads to our eyeballs growing a bit too much, leading to far-off objects looking out of focus. Signs you might have nearsightedness also include headaches, as well as eye stress and tiredness when doing certain activities such as driving or playing sports.
The increased use of screens, most of which are high contrast, like black text on a white page, or light text on a dark background, overstimulating our eyes, causing more eye growth in children and less time spent outdoors are to blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found a connection between increased natural light exposure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and young adults. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine, a chemical which helps regulate normal growth and development of the eyeball. Indoor lighting doesn’t do the trick.
Most people’s vision will stabilize in their teens, but some people develop nearsightedness later in life, typically between ages 20 and 40. Poor eyesight isn’t the only downside; people with nearsightedness are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That’s why regular eye exercise is crucial.
12. What is the function of the figures in paragraph 1?
A. To draw the attention of WHO. B. To introduce the research methods.
C To explain the causes of nearsightedness. D. To illustrate the seriousness of nearsightedness.
13. What happens to the eyeballs of nearsighted children?
A. They are out of shape. B. They grow into a sphere.
C. They match the growth of heads. D. They distinguish far-off objects easily.
14. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The overuse of screens. B. The causes of nearsightedness.
C. The benefits of protecting eyes. D. The influence of exposure to light.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Eye issues of ageing. B. The ways to exercise eyes.
C. Key factors to affect eyesight. D. The downside of nearsightedness.

Gideon and his mother were visiting the supermarket for their weekly shopping when he found a leather wallet. He picked it up curiously and found there was a coffee bean pattern on the surface, which reminded him of his own experience working part-time at a coffee shop during college.
Besides that, he found a significant amount of cash and a business card with a phone number on it. Gideon had tolerated a poor life along with his mother. Each meal was the result of his mother’s hard work. Gideon had been struggling with unemployment while actively searching for a job.
“Should I keep the wallet?” he wondered, the thought of financial relief crossing his mind. “I could surely use the money.” Yet, a wave of guilt washed over him. “But Mother would be annoyed if she knew,” he thought, holding the wallet tightly. Noticing his hesitation, Gideon’s mother asked what was wrong. He told her about the wallet and his internal struggle. With a gentle but firm voice, she reminded him of the values, “We don’t keep what isn’t ours, Gideon.”
Gideon’s face turned red with a mix of emotions. “We have bills without steady income, and this could be a turning point,” he responded. His mother acknowledged their difficulties but encouraged him to think about the right thing to do, saying, “Returning it could bring you unexpected good luck.”
Finally, with resolve, Gideon decided to call the number on the business card. The owner was an elderly man who was very grateful when he met them to take the wallet back. He explained that the money inside was prepared for his son Andrew, which was crucial for his new business — a coffee shop he was planning to open. As Gideon walked away, he felt a sense of fulfillment(成就感) from doing the right thing, but he continued to worry about his own job search and financial situation.

Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outer-edges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6.

10. What does the author think of communication through print for children?
D. He is extremely upset about it
【答案】7. D 8. B 9. A 10. D 11. B

C. To explain the causes of nearsightedness.

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The increased use of screens, most of which are high contrast, like black text on a white page, or light text on a dark background, overstimulating our eyes, causing more eye growth in children and less time spent outdoors are to blame. A 2017 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found a connection between increased natural light exposure and a decrease in nearsightedness, particularly in children and young adults. Exposure to natural light stimulates dopamine, a chemical which helps regulate normal growth and development of the eyeball.
根据最后一段中“Poor eyesight isn’t the only downside; people with nearsightedness are at a higher risk of developing eye issues as they age. That’s why regular eye exercise is crucial.(视力不佳不是唯一的缺点;随着年龄的增长,近视的人患眼部疾病的风险更高。这就是为什么定期的眼保健操是至关重要的。)”可知,作者可能会继续谈论锻炼眼睛的具体方法。故选B项。

Talk to your child about this. ____19____ Then support their efforts in making a change. Help them understand that improving takes work and that it is a choice we get to make.

(你的孩子可能会表达他们不喜欢自己的东西;没关系。我们都有自己不喜欢和想改变的地方。和你的孩子谈谈这件事)”及下文“Then support their efforts in making a change.(然后支持他们做出改变的努力)”可知,此处需衔接“谈论不喜欢的部分”与“支持改变”的中间步骤,G 项“Encourage them to find ways to better themselves.(鼓励他们找到完善自我的方法)”符合语境,better themselves承接want to change的意愿,引出“支持努力”的后续行动,形成“认可意愿 —— 鼓励方法 —— 支持行动”的连贯流程。故选G项。
【20题详解】
由上文“My grandmother used to tell me to just try my best. I pass this same message on to my kids but with a reminder:(我祖母过去常告诉我要尽最大努力。我把同样的信息传递给我的孩子,但要提醒他们)” 可知,此处需补充“尽最大努力”之外的提醒内容,C项Try your best and then just be satisfied.(尽你最大的努力,然后就感到满足吧)符合语境,then just be satisfied呼应段落首句balance,强调在追求卓越的同时接纳结果,与“即使未达高标准也能知足”的后文论述一致。故选C项。

【答案】One possible version:
A few days later, Gideon received an unexpected call. It was the elderly man from the supermarket. He thanked Gideon again for returning the wallet and then asked, “Are you currently looking for work?” Surprised, Gideon replied that he was. The man explained that his son Andrew was in the process of opening a coffee shop and needed someone with experience in café operations. “You clearly have integrity,” the man said, “and I believe you’d be a great fit.” He offered Gideon an interview. With hope rising in his heart, Gideon accepted.
Gideon was promoted to manager of Andrew’s coffee shop soon. After a successful interview and a few months of hard work, Gideon became an essential part of the team. His knowledge from working in a café before, combined with his honesty and strong work ethic, made him stand out. When Andrew saw how well Gideon handled both customers and staff, he decided to promote him. Gideon felt proud and grateful. What once seemed like a simple act of returning a lost wallet had opened a door to a new opportunity — one built on trust, effort, and good fortune.
