Pan Yuzhen,77, is an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Miao embroider (苗族刺绣非物质文化遗产继承人).
“The girls in my hometown can embroider from a very young age. When I was five years old, I began to learn it from my mother and sister,” Pan said, adding that she used to embroider for herself, but after she got married (结婚), she also made embroidered clothes for her family.
Pan’s daughter Zhang Yanmei had poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹症). She needed to spend a lot of money to get Zhang better. So Pan began to sell Miao embroidery products (产品) across the country. Zhang remembered that her mother was always back home in a hurry, but she never said anything about her hardship.
Pan has always wanted to bring Miao embroidery to a wider place. In 1997 Pan went to Beijing to sell Miao embroidery products. In 2016, Pan met Xia Hua—a boss working in the intangible heritage embroidery area for more than 30 years, and became a worker in Xia Hua’s workshop. Xia then took Pan to many countries to take part in different kinds of activities with Miao clothes. Many people were interested in them. With the help of Xia and her team, Pan’s embroidery now sells well.
