When I teach yoga, I usually announce “Phones off and at the back of the room” at the beginning of class. Recently, I forgot and had to whisper to a student texting during class to turn off her phone. She looked displeased but did so. But two days later, in another class, I met with resistance from a young woman who completely refused.
“But I’m on call. I might have to jump up and run out of class.”
“Then maybe this isn’t the best place for you to be tonight.”
That response got me an angry and unfriendly look. But when she came back the next week, there was no phone and she was much more present.
Present is what I’m asking my students to be. Present to themselves and their yoga experience. You cannot be present to yoga if you are texting or emailing or anxiously awaiting a call. And neither can anyone around you. Definitely, if one phone is out, many pairs of eyes are drawn to it. And then other phones start to appear. Forget the fact that you’re missing the class you paid for; you’re at risk of losing your balance and hurting yourself or someone else due to inattention, or disturbing someone else’s moment of peace and stillness with the clicking of your keys.
So please, do yourself and everyone around you, this teacher included, a favor and turn your phone off and put it away before you unroll your yoga mat. If you truly are on call, think hard before you come to class.
Be present for yourself, wherever you need to be.
4. How does the author introduce her topic?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparison.
C. By presenting the process. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
5. Why was the young woman angry with the author?
A. She felt the author was rude. B. She thought she was reasonable.
C. She believed she was discriminated. D. She found the yoga class was not interesting.
6. Which is a probable result of using phone s in yoga class?
A. Relaxing yourself. B. Disturbing others.
C. Achieving work-life balance. D. Getting others’ admiration.
7. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A. To explain her relationship with students.
B. To describe the situation of her yoga class.
C. To show her opinion about using mobile phones.
D. To stress the importance of being attentive in yoga class.
C
As we age, we tend to be less open to encounters with unknown individuals, and less inclined (倾向于) to bond with people we have just met. Now researchers say we are not alone. This phenomenon is not unique to the human species: animals also become less sociable as they age.
A collection of 16 studies, including six from the University of Leeds, have been published in a special issue of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. One study into red deer shows that as older female deer become less and less social with age, they cut down on competition and reduce their risk of parasite (寄生虫) infection. The study used data from a long-running project tracking a wild herd (鹿群) on the Scottish island of Rum.
Dr. Josh Firth, first author of the study, said that while previous research has often considered the process of becoming less social with age, known as “social ageing” as potentially negative, the study shows changing habits could in fact bring benefits. Like older humans who scale back their social interactions to avoid infections such as COVID-19, the less sociable, older ones are less likely to pick up certain diseases.
“As such, while it is certainly worth still trying to lessen the obvious disadvantages that might come with people reducing their social connections as they age, we should also consider the potential benefits,” Firth said, adding that new technologies—such as virtual interactions—could help humans get the best of both worlds.
Dr. Greg Albery, co-author of the study, said: “Because ageing is a universal process, and all animals live in some sort of social context, the topics that we discuss in detail can have really far-ranging implications. The hope is that in understanding the diversity of ageing and sociality across lots of different species, we can shine a light on the processes governing our own society in a time when understanding ageing is particularly important.”
The researchers now aim to apply these scientific methods to other long-term data sets of wild animals, hoping to develop a broader understanding of the fundamental principles that may shape aging and social behavior in natural populations.
8. What does Dr. Josh Firth’s study look at?
A. The features of an ageing society.
B. Animals’ wellbeing in their golden years.
C. Interpersonal relationships in human societies.
D. The relationship between age and social connections.
9. How was Firth’s study finding obtained?
A By analyzing collected data. B. By tracking a Scottish wild herd.
C. By sorting related research papers. D. By referring to previous study finds.
10. What does the underlined part “get the best of both worlds” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Enjoy health benefits without reduced sociability.
B. Live in both the virtual and physical worlds.
C. Take full advantage of their social engagement.
D. Balance the advantages and disadvantages of ageing.
11. Which of the following can summarize Dr. Greg Albery’s words?
A. How we can coexist with ageing animals.
B. Whether ageing is universal across species.
C. What animal societies can teach us about ageing.
D. Why it is important to govern an ageing population.

Some people today might be early risers because of DNA they take after Neanderthals tens of thousands of years ago, suggests new research.
When early humans migrated from Africa to Eurasia roughly 70,000 years ago, some of them mated with Neanderthals, who had already adapted to the colder, darker climates of the north. The ripple (涟漪) effects of that intermating still exist today: Modern humans of non-African ancestry (血统) have between 1 and 4 percent Neanderthal DNA. Some of that DNA relates to sleep more specifically, the internal body clock known as the circadian rhythm.
For the new study, researchers compared DNA from today’s humans and DNA from Neanderthal fossils (化石). In both groups, they found some of the same genetic variants involved with the circadian rhythm. And they found that modern humans who carry these variants also reported being early risers.
For Neanderthals, being “morning people” might not have been the real benefit of carrying these genes. Instead, scientists suggest, Neanderthals’ DNA gave them faster, more flexible internal body clocks, which allowed them to adjust more easily to annual changes in daylight. This connection makes sense in the context of human history. When early humans moved north out of Africa, they would have experienced variable daylight hours — shorter days in the winter and longer days in the summer for the first time. The Neanderthals’ circadian rhythm genes likely helped early humans’ offspring (后代) adapt to this new environment.
Notably, the findings do not prove that Neanderthal genes are responsible for the sleep habits of all early risers. Lots of different factors beyond genetics can contribute, including social and environmental influences. The study also only included DNA from a database called the U.K. Biobank—so the findings may not necessarily apply to all modern humans. Next, the research team hopes to study other genetic databases to see if the same link holds true for people of other ancestries. If the findings do apply more broadly, they may one day be useful for improving sleep in the modern world, where circadian rhythms are disturbed by night shifts and glowing smartphones.
12. What does the new research focus on?
A. DNA’s dramatic changes. B. Genes’ influence on early risers.
C. Neanderthals’ sleeping patterns. D. Ancestors’ environmental adaptability.
13. What is paragraph 2 intended to show concerning the new research?
A Historical context. B. Additional proof.
C. Sample analysis. D. Studying process.
14. What is the real benefit of carrying Neanderthal’s DNA for modern humans?
A. Getting up earlier. B. Having healthier daily routines.
C. Being more flexible in their work. D. Possessing a better circadian rhythm.
15. What can be inferred about the findings from the last paragraph?
A. They get proof from other studies. B. They are confirmed by early risers.
C. They suggest potential applications. D. They reveal factors in sleeping disorders.

One of my teachers once asked my class what our favourite memory was. She was asking for the moment in which “you felt the best, you felt that you had the world in the palm of your hand. ” Some described grand awards; others described winning a tournament. But I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmate’s stares and snickering, because I knew there was more to the story.
My brother and I shared a typical brotherly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. Or, to be honest, he couldn’t stand me. I hero-worshipped him. My clothes mysteriously looked like his, and even my words tended to mimic those I heard from him. Many times, I even wanted to literally follow my brother, sobbing every time I was prevented from hanging around with him. Needless to say, I was an annoyance to him. Any sort of conversation we had usually degraded to fighting, and try as I might, my brother usually won.
After a while, I stopped trying to impress him and learned to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern—I avoided him, he ignored me, and deep inside, it hurt. Indifferent or hostile, he was only a brother in name. So that’s how it was between us. I believed we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth. And nothing more.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received it that Christmas, which was great, until I realized I had no idea how to ride it. My mom was too busy and had long since abandoned any attempt to teach me. I decided to teach myself to ride, a little bit each day, but in vain. On that fateful day, it was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture, and I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside.

A 5. B 6. B 7. D

8 What does Dr. Josh Firth’s study look at?
A. The features of an ageing society.
B. Animals’ wellbeing in their golden years.
C. Interpersonal relationships in human societies.
D. The relationship between age and social connections.
9. How was Firth’s study finding obtained?
A. By analyzing collected data.
D 9. A 10. A 11. C

For the new study researchers compared DNA from today’s humans and DNA from Neanderthal fossils (化石).
A. Historical context.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

上文“Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection.(静默行走包括在户外行走,不受音乐或对话等干扰,专注于身心自然的联系)”以及下文“That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.(这是一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式,非常适合健身。以下是您需要了解的有关趋势的所有信息)”说明静默行走是一种适合健身的运动方式。空处补充上文内容,并引出下文。F项中的it指代前文中的Silent walking,“reaching certain speed or steps”和下文中的“That’s a slower, lower-impact way”相呼应,说明静默行走不关注到特定的速度或步数,而是以一种较慢、影响较小的放松方式行走。
上文“Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. (选择一个自然的环境,充分利用你的感官。为了获得心理健康的好处,建议找一个安静、宁静的自然地点)”说明静默行走需要选择找一个安静、宁静的自然地点。空处与前文内容形成因果逻辑关系,G项中的“In such an environment”和前文中的“a quiet and peaceful natural location”相呼应,说明在这样安静和自然的环境下,你就可以沉浸在自然的音景中。故选G。
【18题详解】
上文“To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. (为了刺激大脑,可以考虑探索与平时不同的路线。如果没有你最喜欢的播客或播放列表,你可能会在散步时陷入无聊)”说明如果平时喜欢博客等,在静默散步时就会感到无聊。空处和前文形成转折关系,所以提出的“无聊的积极影响”提供铺垫。A项中的But引出了与上文相对的观点,表明尽管无聊可能被视为不愉快的体验,但它并非有害,这为下文科学家对无聊的积极评价提供了逻辑上的衔接。A项“But being bored won’t hurt you.” 故选A。
上文“If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in.(如果你通常是一个戴耳机的人,在没有音乐的情况下走路会感觉非常奇怪,但给自己一秒钟的时间来调整。
上文“After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights. (在完成一次静默行走后,花时间反思任何新出现的想法、感受或见解)”说明在完成静默行走后需要做出反思。空处与前文内容形成逻辑上的解释关系,说明反思的重要性。E项中的They指代前文中的“any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights”,说明E“它们可以加深理解并作为个人成长的记录”符合语境,与上文建议的反思活动相呼应,强调了记录这些想法、感受或领悟对于加深个人理解和记录个人成长的重要性。故选E。

【答案】
Living with AI
As a student fascinated by technology, AI has reshaped my life. One practical example is language-learning apps like Duolingo, which adapt exercises to my weaknesses using AI, making learning efficient.
However, risks exist. Over-reliance on AI translators may weaken my skills, while Deepfake videos could spread misinformation, endangering society.
To coexist harmoniously with AI, firstly, we must treat it as a tool to enhance, not replace, human capabilities. Additionally, governments and tech firms should collaborate to establish ethical guidelines and stricter regulations. Ultimately, as young learners, we must cultivate critical thinking and never compromise our values for short-term convenience. All in all, AI’s future depends on us. Let’s embrace its benefits while staying cautious.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside.

An hour later, I was showing off my riding skill to my mom.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside. I turned my face away, fearing he would tease me. Unexpectedly, he gently picked my bike up and gestured me over, “Get on it.” His determined look smoothed away my doubts. As he gripped the back seat, I got on the bike, took a deep breath and started to pedal, holding tightly onto the handlebars. During the whole process, we didn’t talk much. He simply offered a few necessary instructions at times. But never once did he shout at me, nor did he let me fall. His patient teaching proved efficient and I gradually got the hang of riding.
An hour later, I was showing off my riding skill to my mom. She was amazed to see me riding steadily around the yard. While sharing my learning experience with her in excitement, I noticed my brother standing at a distance smiling at me. I cast him a grateful look and he nodded and then walked back into the house. From that day on, the sad pattern between us began to change. There were occasional conversations between us, filled with less embarrassment but increasing concern. I could feel a different kind of brotherly relationship slowly developing between us. I would always treasure that day as my favourite memory, the moment when I felt the best.
