Communicative Teaching Method: Create real - life situations to let students communicate in English, and improve their language application ability.
IV. Teaching Aids
Multimedia (including PPT, videos), blackboard, handouts
V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warming - up
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of different volunteer activities on the PPT, such as helping the disabled, cleaning up the community, and tutoring poor students. Then ask students some questions: “What can you see in the pictures? Have you ever taken part in any volunteer activities? What did you do?” Let several students share their experiences briefly. This step can arouse students' interest and recall their previous knowledge about volunteer work, leading to the topic of this class smoothly.
Step 2: Pre - reading
New Words Teaching:
Present the new words “several, strong, feeling, satisfaction, joy, owner, journey” one by one on the PPT. Explain their meanings, pronunciations and parts of speech with examples. For example, when teaching “satisfaction”, show the sentence “He looked at his work with a smile of satisfaction.” And let students read the words aloud several times to make sure they can pronounce them correctly.
Do a word - guessing game. The teacher gives some descriptions in English, and students guess which new word it is. For instance, “It means a strong feeling of happiness. It rhymes with 'boy'. What is it?” (Answer: joy) This can help students remember the words better.
Prediction:
Show the pictures of Mario and Mary in 3a on the PPT. Let students look at the pictures carefully and predict: “What do you think Mario and Mary do as volunteers? Why do they do it?” Ask students to discuss in pairs and then share their predictions with the class. This can activate students' prior knowledge and prepare them for reading.
Step 3: While - reading
Skimming:
Ask students to read the passage in 3a quickly (within 2 - 3 minutes) without paying attention to every word. Then answer the question: “What are Mario and Mary's volunteer jobs?” Let students find the key sentences to get the general idea of the passage.
Check the answer with the whole class. The answer is: Mario volunteers at an animal hospital and Mary helps kids learn to read in an after - school reading program.
Scanning:
Let students read the passage again, this time more carefully, and find the answers to the following questions:
Why does Mario volunteer?
Why does Mary volunteer?
What does Mario get from volunteering?
What does Mary think of volunteering?
After students finish reading and finding the answers, have a group discussion. Each group exchanges their answers and makes sure everyone in the group understands. Then invite some groups to report their answers.
The answers are:
Mario believes it can help him to get his future dream job.
Mary can do what she loves to do and help others at the same time.
Mario gets a strong feeling of satisfaction when he sees the animals get better and the look of joy on their owners' faces.
Volunteering is a dream come true for Mary.
Careful Reading:
Analyze the language points in the passage sentence by sentence. Focus on the usage of the infinitive and some important phrases. For example:
“Mario Green and Mary Brown from Riverside High School give up several hours each week to help others.” Explain that “to help others” is an adverbial of purpose, indicating the purpose of giving up several hours.
“Mario wants to be an animal doctor.” Here, “to be an animal doctor” is the object of “wants”.
“I want to learn more about how to care for animals.” Point out that “how to care for animals” is a “wh - word + infinitive” structure, which functions as the object of the preposition “about”.
Let students take notes of the important language points and give them some time to read and understand these sentences carefully.
Step 4: Post - reading
Retelling:
Give students some key words and phrases on the PPT, such as “Mario, Mary, animal hospital, after - school reading program, give up, dream job, satisfaction, joy, dream come true”. Let students use these key words to retell the passage in their own words. First, they can practice retelling in pairs, and then some students can retell it in front of the class. This can help students better understand and remember the content of the passage, and also improve their oral expression ability.
Group Discussion:
Divide students into groups of four or five. Pose the following discussion topics:
If you were a volunteer, what would you do? Why?
What do you think are the benefits of volunteering?
Do you think it is difficult to be a volunteer? Why or why not?
Let each group discuss the topics actively. The teacher walks around the classroom, listening to their discussions and giving necessary guidance and help.
After the discussion, each group selects a representative to report their group's opinions to the whole class. The rest of the students can ask questions or make comments. This can not only let students express their own ideas, but also let them learn from others' opinions.
Step 5: Language Focus Consolidation
3c Activity:
Let students complete the exercise in 3c. They need to use infinitives to complete the sentences according to the passage.
After students finish, check the answers together. Explain the reasons for each answer to help students better understand the usage of the infinitive. For example, for the sentence “Mario would like ______ (be) an animal doctor.”, the answer is “to be” because “would like to do sth.” is a common structure.
Step 6: Summary
Summarize the main content of this class with students, including the new words, phrases, sentence patterns and the reading passage. Emphasize the important language points, especially the usage of the infinitive.
Review the key points about Mario and Mary's volunteer work, and the significance of volunteer work. Encourage students to participate in volunteer activities in the future.
Step 7: Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about their own volunteer plans or experiences. They should use at least five new words and phrases learned in this class, and some sentences with infinitives. The passage should be about 80 - 120 words.
Let students preview the next part of the textbook, which can help them better understand the context of the whole unit and be more prepared for the next class.
