The travel journal might talk about: the thoughts people have when they look at one of an artist’s works for the first time. It gives a different impression every time one looks at it. The Impressionists’ vision inspired a whole new generation of Post-Impressionist painters. The movement has had a lasting influence on modern art, encouraging artists to look at the world from an entirely new point of view. ✎ Pre-reading ✎ Detailed reading Post-Impressionists included some late 19th century painters such as Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and others. Most of them began as Impressionists before abandoning the style to form their own highly personal art. Impressionism was based, in its strictest sense, on the objective recording of nature in terms of the subtle effects of colour and light. However, the Post-Impressionists rejected this limited aim and were in favour of more ambitious expression. The work of these painters formed a basis for several contemporary trends and for early 20th century modernism. ✎ While-reading ✎ Detailed reading Post-Impressionists painters Paul Gauguin 保罗·高更 Vincent van Gogh 文森特·凡·高 Post reading ✎ Post-reading ✎ Critic thinking What do you think of the title of this travel journal? Why? The title of the travel journal is “First impressions”. I think it is a good title. It is a good summary of the artistic features of the Impressionists. The Impressionist artists did not try to paint every detail in a scene. Instead, they tried to paint a brief “impression” of the feeling they had, burning with vivid colors and light, before it disappeared. What was painted on canvas was exactly the impression in their mind at that very moment. In addition, the title also indicates that this was the first time the writer had laid eyes on real Impressionist works in a museum, since she had previously only admired them on her computer screen. ✎ Post-reading ✎ Group discussion Which of the following do you think is most likely to be an Impressionist painting? Why? ✎ Post-reading ✎ Group discussion Features soft edges everyday life brief impression free brushwork technique vivid colour ✎ Post-reading ✎ Find more information about the painting Notes Name of the painting: Name of the painter: Time of creation: Genre: Subject: A scene in the port of Le Havre Current location: Paris, France Influence: ✎ Post-reading ✎ Impression, Sunrise This work was painted from a hotel window at Le Havre in 1872. It was one of the nine works that he showed at an exhibition in 1874. Of all those displayed there, this was probably the most famous picture because it gave rise to the name of the movement. This painting showed the treatment of light and colour that afterwards became connected with the “Impressionist” style. Claude Monet ✎ Post-reading ✎ Revision 1. Monet’s Blue Water Lilies, with its around 250 depictions of the same pond in varying lights, amazed me. Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette stood out for its vibrant brushwork capturing Parisian weekend joy. Through shifting shadows, these works revealed how Impressionists turned ordinary scenes into timeless art. ✎ Possible version✎ Last week, our school organized a trip for Grade 10 students to visit the Impressionist exhibition at the City Art Gallery. Monet’s Blue Water Lilies showed a pond with ripping colors, like the water was gently moving. Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette used soft brushstrokes to paint people dancing under the sun. These pictures weren’t clear like photos, but they felt alive! I learned that impressionists paint how light feels, not just how things look. It makes me notice small beautiful moments every day.
