A
根据第一段最后一句的“when it comes to exercise equipment suitable for the office,I'd like to reveal some of my top recommendations”可以看出,本文旨在向办公室人士推荐一些适合办公室的健身器材,故C项正确。
根据Underdesk Elliptical部分中的“increasing your productivity”和Balance Ball Chair部分中的“Sitting on a balance ball leads to increased energy and productivity”可知,Underdesk Elliptical和Balance Ball Chair都有助于提升工作效率,故D项正确。
根据Fitness Tracker部分中的“Sometimes there are connectivity issues”可知,Fitness Tracker的缺陷是它有时候存在连接问题,故B项正确。
根据第一段中的“Since 2018,Nelly Cheboi and her nonprofit TechLit Africa have been bringing computer technology ... helping students join the digital world”可知,自2018年以来,Cheboi和她的非营利组织TechLit Africa一直在将计算机技术引入肯尼亚的学校,帮助学生加入数码世界,释放他们的潜力。
根据第二段中的“But she did not ... that is how TechLit Africa began”可知,Cheboi没有忘记自己的出身。
根据第三段中的“Then in order to reach more students ... existing schools”可知,Cheboi为了让更多的孩子接触计算机科学,就把计算机培训引入现有的学校中。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“TechLit Africa runs its own curriculum... in 10 Kenyan schools, and the hope... 100 throughout Africa by next year”可知,Cheboi的非营利性组织在肯尼亚的10所学校中,有自己的软件程序和课程,明年有望将自己的程序和课程推广到100所学校。 sensitive“敏感的,灵敏的,体贴的”;considerate“体贴的,体谅的,考虑周到的”;cooperative“合作的,配合的,协作的”。
根据第一段中的“children were consistently generous ... couldn't see the options”可知,只有当贴纸的接收者和观众完全知道捐赠选择时,孩子们才会一直慷慨。
根据第一段最后一句话“Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms.”
根据第三段中 Alessandro F. Rotta Loria所说的“There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn't even realize”以及最后一句话“While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesserknown component of climate change.”
根据第五段“But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.”
故选A。

42.D 根据下文中的“Our kitchen was destroyed, and our clean and comfortable home was in ruins”可知,一场飓风席卷(swept)了作者的社区。
根据最后一段中的“Looking back,I realize that the hurricane __53__ unexpected benefit”可知,灾难无情人有情,因此,“They helped clear broken pieces and offered us a place to stay”是意想不到的(unexpected)事情,也是意想不到的收获。
44.C 根据下文中的“They helped clear broken pieces and offered us a place to stay”可知,邻居Flores一家给作者一家提供了帮助(aid)。come to one's aid“帮助某人”;come to mind“突然记起(或想到)”;come to one's sense“恢复理智”。
45.D 结合上文中的“They helped clear broken pieces and offered us a place to stay”可以推测,Flores一家是善良的。
46.A 根据下文转折部分“they __47__ their home to us and made us feel like family”和常识可以推测,作者一家和Flores一家之前并不算亲密,据此可以推断,他们之前都没怎么真正地(really)说过话。
47.D 根据上文中的“offered us a place to stay”可知,他们向作者一家敞开(opened)了家门。
We invited other families from the neighborhood to join us”可知,作者一家和邻居一起聚餐,聚会(gatherings)充满了欢声笑语。
50.C 根据49题的解析和下文中的“It brought us closer to our neighbors”可知,飓风无情,但它也让我们的社区(community)在飓风之后聚在了一起。
51.B 根据上文中的“We had never __46__ spoken to them before”可知,在飓风之前,作者也从来不(never)认识Flores家的女儿Rosica。
52.B 根据下文中的“our evenings together were filled with adventure and laughter”可以推测,Rosica有讲故事(storytelling)的天赋,这让作者他们的聚会充满了冒险故事和欢声笑语。fortunetelling“算命”;mindreading“读心术”;housekeeping“料理家务”。
53.A 根据下文中的“It brought us closer to our neighbors and __54__ our lives in ways we never could have imagined”可知,飓风给作者社区带来(brought about)了意想不到的好处。result from“因…… 而造成”;make up for“补偿”;get away with“不受惩罚”。
54.C 根据上文中的“our __49__ were filled with laughter and delicious food”和“our evenings together were filled with adventure and laughter”可知,飓风以一种作者他们从未想象过的方式丰富(enriched)了作者他们的生活。
with the popularity of .../with one's popularity“随着……

Jordan's eyes fell on the box and he smiled,“It's perfect ...with my wheelchair.” Seeing the puzzled look on his mum's face,Jordan quickly told her the design of his new costume—MaxMag on his car.She smiled and gave him the thumbs up.“Let's get started!”exclaimed his dad who just went in.For two nights, they cut, pasted, folded and unfolded the box;they drew on it and colored it to make it look like a real car;and they glued the old MaxMag costume onto it.
Soon it was Friday night, and Jordan couldn't wait to show his costume. When he wheeled himself into the party,he immediately spotted the three MaxMags. When they saw him, they couldn't believe their eyes. When it was time to announce the winner,Jordan joined his friends by the stage.“The winner of this year's HarvestFest costume contest is ...”,the principal paused to read the name,“Jordan Eastman!”Everyone clapped. “See?You just needed to be creative!”Alice said.“You mean thinking outside the box!”Jordan patted the flamered car attached to his wheelchair, with an iconic MaxMag smile.

The world has changed and so has education. Since 2018, Nelly Cheboi and her nonprofit TechLit Africa have been bringing computer technology into schools in Kenya, helping students join the digital world, and unlock their potential. With its own software programs, curriculum (课程) and teacher training programs, this nonprofit hopes to change Africa.
In 2012, Cheboi received a scholarship to College in Illinois that changed her life. She grew up in poverty in rural Kenya, watching her mother struggle to support her family alone. Cheboi had no experience with computers before moving to the US to study. She handwrote papers and then struggled to type them out on a laptop computer.Somehow she fell in love with computer science and began a career in the field. But she did not lose sight of her origins.“As an undergraduate,I invested all of my income from various campus jobs into my community back in Kenya,”she said on the TechLit Africa website. But soon she wanted to do more for it and that is how TechLit Africa began.
Cheboi recalled how her background helped her understand how important technological knowledge could be for children living in poverty. She built a school with the idea of bringing computer science as part of kids' curriculum. But she found that it was going to be really hard to impact as many people as possible, because it was so hard to fundraise. Then in order to reach more students, she introduced computer training to existing schools. Cheboi physically dragged over 40 recycled computers that had been donated to them by various tech companies to Kenya in suitcases.
Now, since the nonprofit has grown, it works with various companies that help them clean the donated computers of data and send them to Africa.TechLit Africa runs its own curriculum with its own software programs in 10 Kenyan schools, and the hope is to increase to 100 throughout Africa by next year. The students love learning about computers, and in turn are gaining skills that will help them make use of their talents into a way out of poverty.

Researchers set up an experiment in which 5yearolds were tested with their fellows under different circumstances of transparency (透明) and different audiences. They set up a sticker machine that in some settings was transparent, and they also created other settings in which only the giver of stickers knew how many stickers he could give. They had children give out stickers in both settings. The results were striking:children were consistently generous only when the receiver of stickers and audience were fully aware of the donation options. Children were notably ungenerous when the receiver of stickers couldn't see the options.
The researchers said,“Children only showed consistently prosocial behavior in our study in the condition where they could see the receiver and their allocations(分配的东西) were fully visible; in all other conditions, children were statistically ungenerous, giving the receiver the smaller amount of stickers.”
They made the conclusions that at a very early age, children are learning how to position themselves socially.Well before they apprehend the sociology of their networks and what social reputation really means, they think strategically about giving as a function of how they can gain a reputation with peers as a generous citizen or prosocial agent when the receiver observes them.
Children change their behavior in response to having an audience. Help children give things to others in full view, for example, delivering meals to families who need support, and in private or anonymously too,for example, dropping off treats or surprises for those in their life without signing their names. Also, children should be reminded that thankyou notes are lovely but unnecessary to receive. When we give gifts or lend help to others, try to help children remember why we provide something for others. It really doesn't have to be recognized. When a thankyou card doesn't come, it doesn't make a gift any less valuable or meaningful for those who were lucky enough to receive it.
28.What did the researchers discover?
A.The givers' behavior greatly inspired the receivers to help in return.
B.The children gave out an equal number of stickers in both settings.
C.The presence of an audience affected children's decisions to give.
D.Donating helped children to become more generous in the future.
29.Which is prosocial behavior according to the researchers?
A.Observing the givers. B.Donating more stickers.
C.Gaining a reputation. D.Receiving more allocations.
30.What does the underlined word “apprehend” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Share. B.Predict. C.Confirm. D.Understand.
31.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To suggest recognizing others' kindness.
B.To acknowledge the giver's contribution.
C.To confirm the benefits of being grateful.
D.To advise inspiring generosity in children.

The streets, sidewalks and roofs of cities all absorb heat during the day, making some urban areas across the United States up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than rural ones during the day—and 22 degrees F hotter at night. These “urban heat islands” can also develop underground as the city heat spreads downward, beneath the surface. And basements, subway tunnels and other underground infrastructure also constantly bleed heat into the surrounding earth, creating hotspots. Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms.
According to a new study of downtown Chicago, underground hotspots may threaten the very same structures that emit the heat in the first place. Such temperature changes make the ground around them expand and contract (收缩) enough to cause potential damage. “Without anyone realizing it, the city of Chicago's downtown was deforming,” says the study's author Alessandro F. Rotta Loria, a civil and environmental engineer at Northwestern University.
The findings, published in Communications Engineering, expose a “silent hazard (危险)” to civil infrastructure in cities with softer ground — especially those near water — Rotta Loria says. “There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn't even realize,” he adds. While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesserknown component of climate change.
Similar to climate change above the surface, these underground changes occur over long periods of time. “These effects took decades, a century, to develop,” Rotta Loria says, adding that elevated underground temperatures would likewise take a long time to dissipate (逐渐消失) on their own.
But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.
32.What can we learn about the “urban heat islands”?
A.They can develop underground structures.
B.They are impacted by global warming.
C.They can destroy the ground around.
D.They only exist in the United States.
33.Why does Alessandro F. Rotta Loria mention “silent hazard” in paragraph 3?
A.To discuss structural issues. B.To categorize climate change.
C.To explain underground heat. D.To emphasize the neglected reality.
34.What will the author probably write about in the paragraph that follows?
A.The future of tunnels and basements.
B.The reusing approaches of heat energy.
C.The cost of maintaining structures.
D.The evolution of underground environment.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Warming Underground, Weakening Surface
B.A Silver Lining of Global Warming
C.Urban Silent Islands in the Making
D.A Silent Crisis in Downtown Chicago

Outside the Box
The HarvestFest costume contest was falling on Friday and everyone in school was talking about it.All the students would show up in their selfmade costumes (装扮用服装) and a winner would be chosen by the principal.
“Do you have your costume?”Alice asked.“I'm going as a chocolate bar.My mom and I have been working on it all week.”
“Yeah,I have a costume,”said Jordan Eastman, popping up the two front wheels of his wheelchair as he waited for his dad to pick him up.“But it's boring.”
“Why?What is it?”Alice asked.
“MaxMag the superhero, but Danny,Tom and Izzy are all going as MaxMag too.”Jordan shook his head.“That's too many to stand a chance of winning the contest.”He waved to his dad,who had just pulled up in front of the school.
Jordan rolled his wheelchair toward his dad,and Alice walked with him to the minivan (小客车).
“Maybe you should go as something else.”
“The contest is on Friday night,”Jordan sighed.“It's too late to change costumes.”
“Jordan, you have to think outside the box.Look around your house and see what you have. There's hidden potential in everyday items.”She took a sip of her drink, and told Jordan that her chocolatebar costume was made from old fabric her mom had lying around and recycled plastics.
On his way home,Jordan was quiet. He kept thinking about Alice's words:“Think outside the box. There's hidden potential in everyday items.”When he got home,he found his mum handling some wooden pieces. She was putting a new desk together. On top of the desk was the huge empty cardboard box the pieces had come in.Mom smiled at Jordan, pointing at the desk,“What do you think?”
