VI. Teaching Procedures
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of famous places around the world on the PPT, such as the Eiffel Tower in France, the Great Wall in China, the Statue of Liberty in the USA. Ask students: “Have you ever been to these places? If you have, can you share your experiences with us?” Invite several students to answer. This activity can arouse students' interest and activate their prior knowledge about traveling experiences, leading to the new lesson smoothly.
2. Pre - listening (8 minutes)
New words teaching:
Show the new word cards one by one, such as “amusement park”, “theme park”, “Disneyland”, “character”, “roller coaster”, “cruise”, “province”. Pronounce the words clearly and let students repeat after the teacher several times. Then explain the meanings briefly. For example, for “amusement park”, say “It's a place with lots of fun rides and games, like a big playground for people to enjoy themselves.”
Do a quick word - guessing game. The teacher describes the meaning of a word, and students guess which word it is. For example, “It's a very famous theme park. There are many cartoon characters there, like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.” (Answer: Disneyland) This can help students remember the new words better.
1a activity:
Let students look at the pictures in 1a. Read the instructions to them: “Look at the pictures. These are some different places. Rank them from 1 - 6 (1 = the most interesting, 6 = the least interesting).”
Give students a few minutes to rank the places. Then ask some students to share their rankings and reasons. This activity can let students express their opinions and get them familiar with the topic of different interesting places.
3. While - listening (15 minutes)
1b activity:
Read the instructions to the students: “Now you will hear a conversation between two students. They are talking about the places in 1a. Listen and check the places you hear.”
Play the recording for the first time. Students only listen.
Play the recording again. This time, students listen carefully and check the places they hear.
Check the answers with the whole class. Ask students to read out the places they checked.
1c activity:
Read the instructions: “Listen again. Write the names of the places you hear next to the statements.”
Play the recording for the third time. Students listen and write down the answers.
After that, check the answers. Explain some key sentences in the listening material if necessary. For example, “I've never been to a water park.” “Me neither.” Explain the meaning of “Me neither.” which means “I haven't either.”
4. Post - listening (10 minutes)
Pair - work:
Let students work in pairs. Ask them to make conversations based on the information in 1c. They can use the target language like “Have you ever been to...?”, “Yes, I have. I went there...”, “No, I haven't.”
Give students 5 minutes to make conversations. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary, such as correcting grammar mistakes or providing some useful words.
Invite several pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class. Other students can listen and give comments.
5. Extended listening (10 minutes)
Prepare an extra short listening passage about a person's traveling experiences in different amusement parks.
Before listening, let students read the questions related to the passage quickly to get a general idea of what they will listen for.
Play the recording. Students listen and answer the questions.
Check the answers. Then have a brief discussion about the passage, such as asking students what they think is the most interesting part of the person's experiences. This can further improve students' listening ability and their understanding of the topic.
6. Summary (3 minutes)
Summarize the new words, phrases and the key sentences learned in this class. Write them on the blackboard, such as the new words and the structure of present perfect tense for asking and answering about experiences.
Ask students if they have any questions. Answer their questions and clarify any misunderstandings.
7. Homework (2 minutes)
Ask students to write a short passage about a place they have ever been to. They should use at least five sentences with present perfect tense.
Let students listen to an English - language radio program or watch an English - language video about traveling in their free time to improve their listening skills.
VII. Teaching Reflection
After this class, students should have a better understanding of the new words, phrases and the usage of present perfect tense for talking about experiences. However, some students may still have difficulties in using “have been to” and “have gone to” correctly. In future teaching, more examples and exercises should be provided to help students master these two structures. Also, during pair - work, some students may be less active. Teachers need to encourage them to participate more actively and create a more lively and cooperative learning atmosphere.
