Ryan Hreljac is a boy living in Canada. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador. He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.
Ryan’s efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario. When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking dirty water, his teacher said. So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well.
An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life.
After the first well, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adults’ help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn’t bragging(炫耀). “The most impressive people I’ve met are the other kids who want to help too,” he says. “I’m just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. That’s the key reason why I made it come true. Everybody can do something.”
4. What problem is Ryan working to solve?
A. Not enough money for education.
B. A shortage of safe drinking water.
C. African children’s being extremely poor.
D. Polluted water causing diseases.
5. How did Ryan get money for his first well?
A. He did chores and sold his idea.
B. He created an educational foundation.
C. He traveled to villages across the world.
D. He started a website to ask for donations.
6. What would be the most important for Ryan to realize his dream?
A. Knowing his limits. B. Making friends.
C. Never giving up. D. Not bragging about awards.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Story of a Special Well
B. An Organization of Saving Water
C. A Boy Who Makes a Difference
D. A Well That Brought People Together

There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.
When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn’t know what it meant. Realizing I didn’t follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged.
Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like those. Other times, we have to ask each other. She recently told me a funny tale about a woman who was pissed. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that “pissed” means “drunk”.
Here is one more example. My British friend Jane was filling out a ticket at the grocery store recently. She asked the young man if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn’t follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber.
In order to communicate well with the British, we Americans should learn some words that the British use differently. And I think people who learn English as a second language should also realize that there are differences between American English and British English.
8. When Lily used the word “larder”, she was probably looking for a ________.
A. cooker B. cupboard C. cup D. calendar
9. What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Wrote down. B. Left behind. C. Looked for. D. Settled down.
10. Why did Lily regret sending her boys to watch a tennis game?
A. Her boys got lost. B. She thought the game was boring.
C. She didn’t dress her boys in thick clothes. D. She wanted to spend time with her boys.
11. According to the text, which of the following is true in British English?
A. The word “rubber” means “eraser”. B. The word “engaged” means “tired”.
C. The word “pissed” means “angry”. D. The word “jacket” is often used.

Now a new generation (一代人) is appearing. Meet Generation Alpha, the first generation born in the 21st century, exactly between 2010 and 2024. Alphas are expected to be the largest generation in history, with more than two billion members worldwide. They’re growing up in a world where technology is not just a tool, but a necessary part of daily life. The oldest Alphas were born the same year the iPad showed up, giving them the name “iPad Kids”.
They are born into a world of artificial intelligence(AI) Even in the classroom, AI is being used to help them in learning. In fact, this is the first generation that is growing up with parents who themselves are digital natives, says scientist Dr. Melissa Bohnert. Alphas were also all born after the introduction of smartphones. This will give them valuable digital skills for the future.
This generation will also live a longer life and be more educated. It’s believed that Alphas will live at home until they are older and most likely work longer than past generations did. They will stay at jobs until they are in their late seventies.
Members of this generation care about poor people. “Alphas bring a sense of empathy (同理心) because they’re connected globally to the problems of their world,” says social researcher Mark McCrindle. “Moreover, they also worry about the health of the earth.” In a study, 87% of 13—15— year - olds agreed that it’s up to their generation to stop environmental problems from worsening.
McCrindle says he sees Alpha as “the beginning of a whole new reality”. Their technological ability and global understanding could help them deal with different challenges in creative ways. With education and guidance they’ll grow up, creating a world where technology and human beings get along well.
12. What is another name for the oldest Generation Alpha members?
A. IPad Kids. B. Digital Natives.
C. Smartphone Pioneers. D. 21st Century Creators.
13. What do we know about members of Generation Alpha?
A. They will prefer working at home.
B. They study with the help of AI.
C. They are the first to use smartphones.
D. They might face fewer job chances.
14. What does Mark McCrindle think of Generation Alpha?
A. They are always worried.
B. They are addicted to AI.
C. They are friendly to strangers.
D. They are socially responsible.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Rise of Generation Alpha
B. The End of Traditional Education
C. The Influence of Generation Alpha
D. Challenges Facing Generation Alpha

B 5. A 6. C 7. C
根据第一段“He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.(他周游世界,告诉人们如何帮助解决一个大问题:许多发展中国家缺乏安全饮用水。)”
根据第二段“So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well.(所以Ryan决定采取行动。他为父母和邻居做家务。他向学校、教堂和俱乐部讲述他的目标。消息传开了。经过几个月的辛勤努力,Ryan筹集到了2000美元,这笔钱足够挖一口井。)”可知,Ryan通过做家务和推销他的观点,来为他的第一口井筹钱,故选A。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““I’m just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. That’s the key reason why I made it come true. Everybody can do something.”(我只是一个普通的孩子。我有一个小梦想,我坚持它。这就是我让它成真的关键原因。每个人都能做点什么。)”可知,永不言弃是Ryan实现梦想最重要的因素。故选C。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合最后一段“After the first well, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adults’ help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn’t bragging.(在第一口井之后,“涟漪效应开始显现,”Ryan说,“一个目标接一个目标。”在成年人的帮助下,他成立了Ryan水井基金会,教育人们关于水的重要性。现在,该基金会已经筹集了150多万美元,建造了255口水井,服务于12个国家的42.7万人。Ryan获得了很多奖项,但他并没有自夸。)”可知,本文主要是关于一个男孩Ryan,通过努力帮助很多地区建立了水井,帮助了当地人们的同时,还教育人们水的重要性,所以B项“一个有所影响的男孩”符合文章主旨,故选C。

There are some differences between American English and British English Some differences are quite interesting.
10 Why did Lily regret sending her boys to watch a tennis game?
B 9. A 10. C 11. A
根据第二段该词后文“I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food.(我终于知道她想找个地方放食物)”可推测,larder的意思是一个可以存放食物的东西。由此可知,与cupboard(橱柜)意思相近。
根据第二段该词所在句子“She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar (她在日记里jotted down日期和时间,而我则在日历上做标记)”可推测,jotted down在此处的意思与后文的“marked(标记)”意思相近,指在日记里记录了时间。 故选A项。
根据第三段开头“Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like those.(大多数时候,我能明白莉莉的意思。上周,她说后悔让她的孩子们在早晨去看网球比赛时没穿羊毛衫。我以为她是说没让他们穿夹克或者类似的衣服。)”可推测,这次举例是证明作者的理解是对的,Lily是后悔送孩子去看球赛时没让孩子穿上夹克衫之类的厚衣服。故选C项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“She asked the young man if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn’t follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber.(她问那个年轻人是否有‘rubber’。当她注意到他没有听懂时,她赶紧要一块‘eraser’,在英国,这种东西通常被称为‘rubber’)”可知,rubber和eraser指同一样东西,意思相同。故选A项。

14. What does Mark McCrindle think of Generation Alpha?
A. They are always worried.
B. They are addicted to AI.
C. They are friendly to strangers.
D. They are socially responsible.

____19____
What makes your eyes light up? This will tell you where you obtain your true joy. It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix that bug in his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.
Ask yourself who you want to be.
What is your true purpose in life? Who or what do you want to be, really? As you go about your daily activities, ask yourself these questions to gain an understanding into your true self. ____20____

G. This will give you an insight into the personal values or abilities you hold dear.
E 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. F
根据空前内容“We often hear of people who make long journeys to different parts of the world. (我经常听说有人长途旅行到各地)”以及空后内容“Having an insight into your true self helps you feel more confident and at peace with yourself. (对真实的自己有洞察会让你更自信、更平和)”可知,空前提到的长途旅行和空后提到对自己的洞察,中间缺少过渡句,故E项“然而一个人能进行的最大的旅途是在自己的内心”可以连接上下句子,起到承上启下的作用。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据本段小标题“Identify what you value about yourself(识别你看中自己的哪些方面)”及本段首句“what do you most like about yourself, something you are proud of?(你最喜欢自己, 最引以为傲的是自己的哪个方面?)” 故G项“This will give you an insight into the personal values or abilities you hold dear. (这会给你一个洞察力了解你所珍视的个人价值或能力)”中This指代上文“Know what you most like about yourself, something you are proud of”。
根据空后内容“However, in order to discover yourself, you will need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. (然而为了发现自己,你需要把自己处于一个不舒适的环境中)”可知,此处和空后内容是转折关系。D项“在熟悉的地方总是比较舒服”符合语境。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“What makes your eyes light up? This will tell you where you obtain your true joy. It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix that bug in his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.(什么让你的眼睛发亮?这将告诉你从哪里获得真正的快乐。它可能是当你在舞台上表演舞蹈时,当你帮你爸爸修理电脑漏洞时,甚至当你在做学校科学项目的研究时)”可知,本段主要讲述的是从生活中的哪些方面可以获得真正的快乐。B选项“知道什么能让你兴奋”最符合语境。故选B。
【20题详解】
根据本段小标题“Ask yourself who you want to be. (问你自己想成为什么样的人)”可知, 本段主要内容为通过自我发问的方式探寻自我。根据空前内容“ask yourself these questions to gain an understanding into your true self(问你自己这些问题以获取对真我的理解)”可知,本句与上句承接,说明这么做的原因。

Upon arriving home, John locked his bedroom door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. He liked it very much and polished it happily.
Before sleep, Emily went into John’s bedroom and said. “John, you can’t keep the phone. Your behavior is wrong. And how will you explain the thing to our parents?” John said. “I will say a friend lent it to me.” “You are lying. Oh, dear! When did you turn so dishonest?” said Emily.
