The bench brought kids together and helped them make new friends. Especially for those shy children, they only need to sit on the bench, and then there will be children coming and talking with them. It helps them meet new people and make new friends. “There was one little boy at school, younger than me,” Sammie told her friends. “He gave me a thumbs—up in the hallway. I knew what I was doing helped him.”

Now Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches. And she is spreading kindness around the world. “We recently got a bench in Ghana, Africa,” she says. “That was cool.”

I like to listen to music because music helps me relax. Before I go to bed, I always need to listen to soft music so that I can sleep soon. When I am in bad mood, I will listen to hard music. I will rock my head and then sing with the song. Listening to music is a good way to relax myself and I even plan to buy a guitar and learn music.
For most of us, it’s difficult not to admire the talent of a skilled musician. Whether they are pianists or violinists, these musicians have shown dedication (奉献) and passion (热情) over a long time to reach the highest levels of performance. But they say it’s never too late to learn. So what are the benefits (益处) for both children and adults, in learning a musical instrument?
Learning to play a musical instrument when growing up can improve hearing in adulthood. According to a study by Dr. Nina Kraus, Professor at a University in US, children who played musical instruments were better at recognizing (认识) different sound. This improved hearing skill which could be carried over into later life. The adults who had once played an instrument are able to recognize sounds more easily. And it could also have some academic (学术) benefits too. A study found that students who took part in music—related activities during grades 7—12 scored much higher in science, English and maths.
And there are not just benefits to children. Whether you choose to play the piano, try a guitar or learn a drumbeat, you could end up joining a band. Meeting other band mates and sharing your love of a good tune could improve your social life. Learning an instrument can also give you a sense of achievement (成就). Playing that perfect chord (和弦) is one way, but what if you got together with some friends and entered into a competition of the bands—and won?
So, whether you’re looking to reduce (减少) stress by playing out some chords, or improve your grades at school, maybe taking up an instrument could help you.
27. The writer thinks ________.
A. it is too late for adults to learn playing instruments
B. skillful musicians are mostly born, not made
C. people can relax themselves with the help of music
D. listening to music can help people reduce hearing illness

It’s common to communicate by way of texting, and that works well for everything from setting plans with a friend to asking your parents to buy something in the shop. However, we may have taken communication by texting too far. Fighting over text, which is also known as “fexting” is a potential pitfall (潜在危险) to relationships that can cause problems and can even break up friendships.
When we speak, the person we’re talking to can tell how serious or light we are by our tone (语气) Texting, on the other hand, has no tone. Everything is flat in writing, so a comment (评论) or a joke may be misunderstood as an insult (冒犯). It can lead to miscommunication. Texting is generally a quick back—and—forth exchange, and when arguing, it can get even faster. You may not read all of a person’s reply before you respond (回复) again, and the more upset you get, the harder it may be to express (表达) yourself clearly or to clearly understand the person you’re fighting with. When we text on the phone, there are no facial expressions or body language, so we can’t tell others our real feeling. Sometimes Emojis and GIFs (表情符号和动图) can be hurtful, too.
As soon as it becomes clear that things are heading in a bad direction, you can be the one to stop the argument. When the situation isn’t going in the right direction, you can say “I don’t think texting is the right way to discuss this problem.” or “I’m feeling misunderstood and I don’t think texting will help me feel understood.” to stop the conversation.
Once you’re clear that texting is no longer an effective (有效的) communication, suggest a new choice to the text argument. For example: Are you free for a phone call? Would you like to talk about this more in person? Let’s make a plan and so on. If the other person isn’t listening to you, or the exchange isn’t ending because you’re having a hard time stopping yourself from arguing further, the best thing you can do is to put down your phone and walk away from it. In some situations, you may even want to turn it off.
Arguing happens, but it doesn’t need to happen through texting. If you and your friends disagree about how to communicate effectively, you may benefit from face to face communication.
30. The writer thinks ________.
A. people can read the text message carefully when arguing
B. “fexting” can cause problems and hurt relationship
C. texting can help understand others’ feelings by tone
D. texting can help express clearly when people are angry
31. The second paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. why texting can cause misunderstanding
B. how we use our tone to express feelings
C. how to express yourself clearly through texting
D why talking on the phone can avoid misunderstanding
32. What do the words “heading in a bad direction” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Helping people reach an agreement. B. Directing people to a good place.
C. Following people’s instructions. D. Causing people’s misunderstanding.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To discuss the good influence of “fexting”.
B. To prove the importance of using text messages.
C. To tell some tips for stopping “fexting”
D. To compare different ways to communicate with others.

Third, there are more HSR trains than normal ones and people can reach the high—speed railway stations by subway. It can make a rail journey much more convenient than before. Fourth, although China high—speed train tickets cost more than a common train ticket, it is still cheaper than a flight ticket most of the time. Besides, the seats are wider and softer, the windows are bigger, and the washrooms are cleaner. What’s more, there are advanced (先进的) technological communication systems on the high—speed trains. They can help keep passengers safe.
Facilities (设施) on these trains are often high standard, similar to those on an airplane. The seats can be turned towards different directions; the seatback can be changed to a wanted angle (角度); there is a small table in front of the passenger and it is even possible to use Wi—Fi.
There are mainly four north—south and four east—west trunk lines, and some inter—city lines, greatly shortening the travel time within China.

Being a Buddy
Sammie Vance is 14. She knows people will feel bad when they have no friends. So she has been helping kids who feel lonely make friends.
When she was in the third grade she started the Buddy Bench (友谊长凳) program. That was at her school, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Anyone who felt lonely could sit on the “buddy bench”. It showed others that someone needed a friend.
It cost money to build benches. Sammie decided to make them out of recycled (回收的) material. This lowered the cost. And the benches were eco—friendly (环保的).
After discussing with her teachers and friends, they decided to make the benches with plastic (塑料) bottles. They collected 1,200 pounds of bottles in the school and community. The plastic is used to make buddy benches. A company called Green Tree Plastics made three benches with these bottles.
Now Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches. And she is spreading kindness around the world. “We recently got a bench in Ghana, Africa,” she says. “That was cool.”
Sammie reminds us that kids can help others and even small acts of kindness can be powerful. “You don’t have to be an adult to make a difference.” She says.
Sammie wrote a book. It is called Inspire the World: A Kid’s Journey to Making a Difference. It tells the story of her buddy benches. Sammie hopes her example will inspire others. “I used to be really, really shy,” she says. Building buddy benches gave her confidence. “I’m surely more outgoing now.”

28. What are Paragraphs 3—4 mainly talking about?
A. The helpful ways of becoming a musician. B. The benefits of playing musical instruments.
C. The importance of recognizing the sounds. D. The reasons of choosing the suitable instrument.
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. People must join a band to learn an instrument
B. Learning music is good for both children and adults.
C. Listening to music gives you a sense of achievement.
D. Music can be good for children, but it cannot last long.
D
D texting can help express clearly when people are angry
31. The second paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. why texting can cause misunderstanding
B. how we use our tone to express feelings
C. how to express yourself clearly through texting
D. why talking on the phone can avoid misunderstanding

China high—speed trains, also known as fast trains, can reach a top speed of 350 km/h. Over 2800 pairs of high—speed trains numbered by G, D or C run daily connecting over 550 cities in China and covering more than 30 provinces. By the end of 2024, China kept the world’s largest high—speed rail (HSR) network with a length totaling over 45,000 km. The world’s longest HSR line, Beijing—Hong Kong High Speed Railway, extends 2,440 km.
Why do people like traveling by high—speed trains? There are many different answers. First, the present speed of China high—speed trains is 200—350 km/h, greatly shortening the travel time. Second, different from flights, they are less influenced (影响) by weather traffic control so that they can arrive on time.
According to the plan, more railways and other transportation facilities will be built and the high—speed rail will reach 50,000 km by 2025.
