Four Must-See Historic Sites in New York
Central Park
Central Park is a public park located in the heart of Manhattan. It was first proposed in 1857 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who won a design competition to create the park. Construction began in 1858 and was completed in 1873. The park is 843 acres and is home to numerous landmarks, including the Central Park Zoo, the Central Park Conservatory Garden, the Bethesda Fountain, the Delacorte Theater and the Central Park Mall.
Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge was built in 1883, which was designed by John A. Roebling, and its construction was led by his son, Washington Roebling. Before Brooklyn Bridge was built, Brooklyn was considered a separate city entirely, and not classified as part of New York City. The bridge was a crucial link in connecting the two cities, making it much easier for people to travel between the two.
Grand Central Station
Grand Central Station was a train station located in Midtown Manhattan. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century. By the turn of the 20th century, Grand Central Station was outdated and could no longer handle the growing number of travelers and trains. In 1978, it was designated (指定为)a National Historic Landmark. Now, it is a popular filming location for movies and TV shows and has been featured in numerous productions such as The Avengers, Men in Black, The God father and many more.
The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH)
The American Museum of Natural History is a world-famous natural history museum located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was founded in 1869 and is one of the oldest and largest natural history museums in the world. Its permanent exhibits cover a wide range of topics, exploring the natural world and the universe.

Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. That’s true for Logan Earnest’s fifth-grade classroom, and he felt it was affecting his students. “Most of the day,7/8 of the day, they’re inside,” Earnest said. “And they don’t really get to see any trees. They don’t get to see grass and the blue sky.” He said the white walls may affect the kids’ attention and even their attendance.
Former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and has benefits for students. Rodriguez is no longer a practicing psychologist—but perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. He became a park ranger(护林员)on Southern California’s Catalina Island and began focusing on his passion, landscape photography.
Rodriguez used his photography skills to take 360-degree shots of trees, and then he printed them and fit them onto the ceilings of the classrooms. So when students looked up, it felt like they were sitting under a tree.
He revealed the picture to Earnest’s fifth-grade students. “Beautiful,” one student named Octavio said as he entered the classroom and saw the new addition. “It’s surprising and great to see that there are trees here.”
Earnest said he thought there would be many positive effects on his students. “I think kids are going to want to come in here more frequently. And they are going to be happier,” he said.
Rodriguez created a nonprofit called Nature in the Classroom and he’s put up the tree pictures in 10 schools so far. “This is a marriage of both my careers as a school psychologist and a photographer,” Rodriguez said. “And it is really motivating to be able to spend time out in nature creating imagery that I know is going to help people.”

The voice Alexis Bogan had before last summer was dynamic. She loved to sing out songs in the car. In high school, she was a singer in the chorus. Then that voice was gone.
Last August, doctors removed a life-threatening tumor (肿瘤) near the back of her brain. When the breathing tube came out a month later, Bogan had trouble saying “hi” to her parents. After several months, she recovered from the illness. However, her speech was still damaged. Friends, strangers and her own family members struggled to understand what she was trying to tell them.
In April, the 21-year-old got her old voice back — not the real one, but a voice clone generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Trained on a 15-second time capsule of her teenage voice — sourced from a cooking demonstration video she recorded for a high school project — her synthetic (合成的) but remarkably real-sounding AI voice can now say almost anything she wants. She types a few words or sentences into her phone and the app instantly reads it aloud.
Experts have warned that rapidly improving AI voice-cloning technology can increase phone crimes, disturb elections and hurt the dignity of people — living or dead — who never agreed to have their voice recreated to say things they never spoke.
But Bogan and a team of doctors at Rhode Island’s Lifespan hospital group believe they’ve found a use that justifies the risks. Bogan is one of the first people who have been able to recreate a lost voice with OpenAI’s new Voice Engine. Some other AI providers, such as the startup ElevenLabs, have tested similar technology for people with speech barriers and loss — including a lawyer who now uses her voice clone in the courtroom.
Jeff Harris, OpenAI’s lead on the product, said OpenAI’s next step involves developing a secure “voice authentication (认证)” tool so that users can copy only their own voice. “That might be limiting for a patient like Alexis, who had a sudden loss of her speech capabilities,” he said. “So we do think that we’ll need to have high-trust relationships, especially with medical providers, to give a little bit more unrestricted access to the technology.”
8. What is described about Alexis in paragraph 2?
A. What she suffered. B. What she tried to tell others.
C. How she developed the disease. D. How she performed in the chorus.
9. What can be learned about AI voice-cloning technology in paragraph 4?
A. Experts speak highly of it. B. Improper use of it can cause harm.
C. It helps to reduce phone crimes. D. It may protect the dignity of people.
10. What does the author want to indicate by mentioning “a lawyer” in the text?
A. The rules on using AI. B. How the technology can help patients.
C. The risks of cloning voices. D. What AI providers refuse to do.
11. What will OpenAI do next?
A. Fund hospitals. B. Make a speech.
C. Record more voices. D. Set a limit on its product.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. D

In a groundbreaking discovery by Queen Mary scientists, bumblebees have been shown to possess a previously unseen level of cognitive complexity. The new study, published in Nature, reveals that these bees can learn complex, multi-step tasks through social interaction, even if they cannot figure them out on their own.
Led by Dr Alice Bridges and Lars Chittka, Professor of Sensory and Behavioural Ecology at Queen Mary University of London, the research team designed a two-step puzzle box requiring bumblebees to perform two distinct actions in sequence (顺序) to access a sweet reward in the end. Training bees to do this was no easy task, and bees had to be helped along by the addition of an extra reward along the way. This reward was eventually taken away, and these demonstrator bees subsequently had to open the whole box before getting their treat.
Dr Bridges emphasises the novelty of this study, “Other bees learned the whole sequence from social observation of these trained demonstrator bees, even without ever experiencing the first step’s reward. But when we let other bees attempt to open the box without a trained bee to demonstrate the solution, they didn’t manage to open any at all.”
This study demonstrates that bumblebees possess a level of social learning previously thought to be exclusive to humans. They can share and acquire behaviours that are beyond their individual cognitive capabilities: an ability thought to form the expansive, complex nature of human culture.
This research opens a new approach to understanding animal intelligence and the evolution (进化) of social learning. It challenges longstanding assumptions and paves the way for further exploration of the cognitive wonders hidden within the insect world, even suggesting the exciting possibility of cumulative (累积的) culture, the gradual accumulation of knowledge and skills over generations, among seemingly simple creatures.
12. How did researchers train the demonstrator bees?
A. By teaching them to share sweets. B. By opening the box for them.
C. By offering temporary rewards. D. By giving them easy tasks.
13. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unique. B. Dangerous. C. Useful. D. Unknown.
14 What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The finding of the study. B. The abilities of animals.
C. The meaning of the study. D. The importance of social learning.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Origin of Human Cumulative Culture
B. Bumblebees Master Complex Tasks on Their Own
C. Social Interaction Is Critical for Mental Health
D. Bumblebees Surprise Scientists with Social Learning Skills
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

Sienna Powell was a 16-year-old girl raised by a single mother. Through the years, Sienna tried her best not to burden her mother. She rarely asked for anything besides what she truly needed and even took part-time jobs to help pay the bills.
Every time she received a paycheck from her part-time job, she would save a part of it for one thing she had always dreamt about since she became a senior high student—her prom (毕业舞会)night.
As she walked home from school every day, Sienna would pass by a clothes store. She had set her mind to get her dream prom dress from the store and even had drawings of the dress posted on her bedroom wall to motivate her to work hard. The dress Sienna wanted was worth $1500.
Sienna would often talk about the dress to her classmate Emily. Emily and Sienna found common ground when they discovered their fathers had left their mothers when they were younger. They related to one another a lot and, since then, have been inseparable. Sienna often went to Emily’s house to do homework together, and Emily’s mother was very kind to her, cooking nice food for them although they were not rich.
The morning before the senior prom, Sienna was able to save up enough money to buy the dress finally. Sienna and Emily decided to meet at the school gate to buy the dress together.
Sienna was about to leave for school when Emily suddenly called her, crying, “I’m so sorry, Sienna, I know you’ve been looking forward to the prom, but I can’t make it today. My mom was just rushed to the hospital, and I was told she has a couple of days left before she needs to go through surgery. But I’m still $1500 short of her surgery. I have no idea what to do.”
Sienna was in front of the mirror when she answered the call, and she had just imagined herself wearing the dress. Then, quickly, her focus shifted towards Emily, who was still crying on the other end of the line. “Don’t worry, Emily, we’ll figure out how to get money for your mom’s surgery, alright? Stay strong for her,” she assured Emily.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】 After hanging up the phone, Sienna was lost in thought. She remembered that Emily and her mom were always nice to her. At the moment, Emily needed her support although it meant she would miss the prom and the dress she had been dreaming of. But life is more important than anything. Finally, Sienna rushed to be by Emily’s side at the hospital. She gave all her money to Emily so that she could contribute to her mom’s treatment. They stayed there for two days until Emily’s mom picked up.
Emily and her mom were very grateful to Sienna. But they felt terrible that they had nothing to offer her in return. Sienna assured them that they didn’t need to pay her back. She told them, “You and Emily have been nothing but kind to me. We’re family, and families help each other out during difficult times.” After the surgery, Emily’s mom was able to make a full recovery.

Central Park is a public park located in the heart of Manhattan. It was first proposed in 1857 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who won a design competition to create the park.
4. What do the first two paragraphs try to tell us?
A. Outdoor activities can improve students’ concentration.
B. The learning environment in some schools is superior.
C. Some students are unwilling to open windows at school.
D. A classroom with windows is more beneficial to students.
5. What is Octavio’s attitude toward the tree picture on the ceiling?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.
6. What effect does Earnest expect the tree picture to have on his students?
A. They will help each other. B. They will plant more trees.
C. Their attendance will go up. D. They will love drawing.
7. What do we know about Rodriguez?
A. He has set up seven schools. B. He was satisfied with what he did.
C. He has been married for ten years. D. He created a profitable organization.

Jeff Harris OpenAI’s lead on the product, said OpenAI’s next step involves developing a secure “voice authentication (认证)” tool so that users can copy only their own voice.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
