B As a kid, I was always around animals and I always enjoyed it. After my senior year of high school, we started renting this farm. Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect. After about two years and a half, I found that was not quite what I wanted to do. I felt I wanted to be an architect and have a hobby farm. But why not just have a farm and make it my career? It’s an exciting business. I think a lot of people don’t realize what’s involved with dairy farming (奶牛业). We took some trips to some progressive farms out in New York when we first started. And it really changed my attitude of what you can do. You can be a successful businessperson with a lot of challenges. And those challenges are part of what makes it very exciting — it’s not just milking cows. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions. Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is important. We don’t just need the land for the animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. And there’s a real balance, a real recycling. You take the feed; you give it to the cows, and the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure. And the best thing to do is putting it back on the land. You need 2 acres per cow basically, a cow and its calf. The land that we rent is beautiful and the land that we own is beautiful. If you get half a mile off the road and looking back at scenery across the valley, it’s impressive. You get the rows of grass and the cows in the distance. 24. Which of the following is included in the dairy farming according to the text? A. Designing for the dairy farming. B. Playing with the cows around the farm. C. Taking trips around the farm to enjoy life. D. Milking cows, nutrition, finances and decisions. 25. What’s the biggest challenge that the author faced? A. Huge amounts of money. B. Securing enough land. C. Highly qualified milk cows. D. Quantities of workers. 26. What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3? A. Milk from the cows. B. Chemical fertilizers. C. Waste of the cows. D. Food offered to cows. 27. Which one is the best title for this text? A. Building a Successful Dairy Business B. Famous Farmers Around the World C. Highly Qualified Milk Cows D. The Architecture Designer C New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nokia phone that is unable to access the Internet and only allows calls and texts. Students might blame the psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who popularised the idea that smartphones are responsible for rising rates of mental health problems among young people. Teachers at nearly two-thirds of secondary schools now say they have rules that prevent students from using their phones during the day. But is there really anything wrong with spending a bit of time watching videos on social media? Or taking your phone out while you’re in the supermarket queue to see funny news? We might need meaning and purpose and psychological richness in our lives, but surely we need a bit of pleasure too. A study published in April in PLoS One found that spending 20 minutes on social media or watching videos on YouTube not only contributed to no negative stress response, but was associated with a decrease in both heart rate and cortisol (皮质醇). What we get wrong is thinking that we are relaxing just because scrolling (浏览) mindlessly through social media is unproductive and feels like “time out”. There is a significant difference between doing things like being with our loved ones, spending time in nature, or reading a great book and emotional numbing (麻木). As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her book Dopamine Nation, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulation from our smartphone — which she describes as the “modern-day hypodermic (皮下注射) needle” — we become addicted to such stimulation, and find it harder to find joy in other less immediate things. But also, by never putting our phones down and never giving ourselves a break from endless stimulation, we are not able to go into the kind of quiet brain state that allows mind-wandering, creativity and deep reflection. As we all know, if you are not paying for it, then you are the product, and businessmen in the marketplace of attention are constantly adjusting the ways in which they occupy our brain space. We must learn to get more creative and intentional about the ways we choose to relax ourselves and perhaps, even, to enjoy some good-old fashioned boredom. 28. Why is the school Eton mentioned in paragraph 1? A. To raise a doubt. B. To explain a phenomenon. C. To introduce a topic. D. To launch a campaign. 29. What does the study published in April in PLoS One suggest? A. Constant use of social media is beneficial to health. B. Proper use of social media can reduce stress. C. Watching YouTube videos increases heart rate. D. Spending time on social media has little effect on people. 30. Why does Anna Lembke describe the smartphone as the “modern-day hypodermic needle”? A. Because smartphones can bring new energy. B. Because people rely too much on smartphones. C. Because smartphones might relieve pain quickly. D. Because people will get medical help from smartphones. 31. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. We should pay for using smartphones. B. Businessmen often control our thinking. C. Boredom is unacceptable in modern life. D. We should choose our relaxing ways wisely. D While facial recognition technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it’s now being applied to aid the protection of giant pandas, Xinhua News Agency reported recently. A nature reserve has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared (红外线) cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation two years ago, and has captured numerous photos and videos of pandas engaged in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides scientific data to help us grasp pandas’ living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible. A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It’s shown that by equipping the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021 alone, this monitoring system captured 2,896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed 3,218 seconds of footage, showcasing the reserve’s sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in panda population there. Head of the reserve’s administration, Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the near future.” 32. What does the underlined word “discern” mean in paragraph 2? A. Solve. B. Pose. C. Reduce. D. Detect. 33. What can be learned about the new technology from the study? A. It precisely recognizes any species. B. It makes panda population rise rapidly. C. It contributes to species data collection. D. It understands pandas’ facial expressions. 34. Which can be inferred from what Liu Xingming said? A. The giant panda population is healthier. B. The system hasn’t solved all problems. C. The system has no need to be improved. D The giant panda’s habitat has changed. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Panda Facial Recognition Collecting and Using Database B. In life, there are always ups and downs, different persons have different attitudes when faced with them. As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Allen’s dream to be a dancer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about dancing. Whenever she had a chance, she would dance to the music. Her sweet and charming dancing deeply attracted everyone around her. Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Allen attended school, her dancing teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to dance. Allen practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in dancing. Unfortunately, one night a year later, Allen was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to the hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me. It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Allen needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Jane. That night, Allen recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Allen, Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Allen’s cheeks. After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Allen eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of dancing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us. P1: Suddenly, one day a piece of good news came that a dancing performance would be held in the school. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ P2: An exciting moment arrived. I’m Jeffrey Stone. Today’s top story takes us to the small village of Hilden. There are only about two hundred people who live there, and there is a big open area in the center for the weekly market. There is only one restaurant in the village, and it’s been serving delicious food and drinks for more than two centuries. If you look closely, you may be able to tell what makes this village different. Do you see how all the houses are much higher than we might expect? That’s because Hilden is home to some of the tallest people in all of England. Both men and women are about twenty five percent taller than most others, and the tallest man in the village right now is seven and a half feet tall. That’s taller than most NBA players. No one is sure why everyone in Hilden is so tall, but we are going to find out. Stay with us, won’t you? This is going to be interesting. A Hong Kong Universities blend (融合) Eastern and Western cultures, use English as the main teaching language, and offer scholarships. The Architecture Designer 【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. 根据第二段中“And those challenges are part of what makes it very exciting—it’s not just milking cows. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions.(这些挑战是令人兴奋部分原因——这不仅仅是挤奶。有营养和财务以及许多重大的日常决策)”可知,根据文章,奶牛养殖包括挤奶、营养、财务和日常决策。故选D。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is important. (好吧,土地是最大的障碍。确保足够的土地很重要)”可知,作者面临的最大挑战是确保有足够的土地,故选B。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在句子“We don’t just need the land for the animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. (我们不仅需要为动物提供土地;我们还需要它来分配奶牛的manure)”和下文“And there’s a real balance, a real recycling. You take the feed; you give it to the cows, and the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure.(这是真正的平衡,真正的回收。你接受饲料;你把它给奶牛,奶牛给你牛奶,但它们也给你很多manure)”以及常识可知,奶牛不仅产奶,而且还会产生大量粪便,粪便被回收,作为土地的营养,由此可推知,划线单词意为“粪便”,与C项“牛的粪便。”意思一样,故选C。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“It’s an exciting business. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions.(这是一项令人兴奋的事业。我认为很多人不了解奶牛业涉及什么。刚开始时,我们去了纽约的一些先进农场。这确实改变了我对你能做什么的态度。你可以成为一名成功的商人,同时面临很多挑战。这些挑战是令人兴奋的部分原因——这不仅仅是挤奶,且关于营养和财务以及许多重大的日常决策)”可知,文章主要介绍了作者成功建立乳品企业的经历,A项“建立成功的乳制品企业”适合作文章标题,故选A。 C New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them. 28. C 29. B 30. B 31. D. The giant panda’s habitat has changed. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Panda Facial Recognition Collecting and Using Database B. Functions of AI-enabled Facial Recognition Technology C. AI-aided Monitoring System for Better Panda Protection D. A Breakthrough in Video Monitoring System 【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. When the host announced it was Allen’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考答案 Suddenly, one day a piece of good news came that a dancing show would be held in the school. On hearing it, Mary raced quickly to Allen from school, telling her that her classmates all expected her to dance on behalf of her class. Allen’s eyes burst into tears but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately told her firmly that she must be able to make it. In the following weeks with Mary’s assistance and encouragement, Allen kept on practicing dancing harder day and night. Hard work paid off in the end. Beautiful dancing emerged in our house again and smiles began to come back on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself. An exciting moment arrived. When the host announced it was Allen’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. At once, everyone greeted her with warm applause. As she began to dance the sweet music, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful gestures, the whole hall falling into silence. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Allen received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Allen was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Allen’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly. 词汇激活 行为类 ①坚持做某事:keep on doing/ hold on doing ②出现:emerge /appear ③追求:pursue / go after 情绪类 ①感动的:moved /touched ②热情:enthusiasm /passion 【点睛】[高分句型1]On hearing it, Mary raced quickly to Allen from school, telling her that her classmates all expected her to dance on behalf of her class.(运用了非谓语动词中的现在分词作状语) [高分句型2]As she began to dance the sweet music, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful gestures, the whole hall falling into silence.(运用了As引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$第一节听下面5段对话。 Do you have time for a cup of coffee?
