It all started when my parents gave me a book about animals. I was fascinated by the stories and pictures, and I couldn’t put the book down.
Reading has become a big part of my life. I read different kinds of books, from fairy tales (童话) to science fiction (科幻作品). Each book takes me to a different world. After finishing his education, Gu began his work. In 1955, many people got sick from polio. More than 1,600 people, mostly little kids, couldn’t walk or move their arms. Gu and his team worked hard to create a medicine to stop this disease.

Fruits come in many different colors, from red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons. Have you ever thought about why fruits have so many colors?
According to scientists, fruit colors come from different pigments (色素) inside them. For example, red and yellow fruits have a pigment called the carotenoid (类胡萝卜素), while blue and purple fruits have the anthocyanin (花青素). The amount of these pigments can change based on where the fruit grows. This makes the fruit have different colors.
Chinese scientists studied fruits of different colors, like white, red, blue, purple, and black. They found that red fruits usually grow in cooler places and can be found in many different parts of the world. Blue and purple fruits mostly grow in warm places and often stay in one specific area. Interestingly, they also discovered that the closer a fruit grows to the equator (赤道), the darker its color is. ▲
Animals also play a role in the colors of fruits. When animals eat fruits and drop the seeds, the fruits can grow in new places. To attract animals, some fruits develop bright colors that animals can easily see. But animals see colors differently from humans. For example, birds can see red very well, so there are more red fruits in places where birds live. In Madagascar, lemurs (狐猴) are red-green color-blind. That’s why there are more yellow fruits in their habitats (栖息地), because lemurs can see yellow easily.
So, the colors of fruits are not just for us to enjoy. They help fruits survive and spread in nature.
( ) 21. What influences the amount of pigments in the fruit?
A. The size of the fruit.
B. The seeds inside the fruit.
C. The sweetness of the fruit.
D. The place where the fruit grows.
( ) 22. According to the passage, if a fruit grows very close to the equator, what will happen?
A. It will grow more slowly.
B. It will have a darker color.
C. It will become smaller in size.
D. It will have difficulty attracting animals.
( ) 23. Which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
A. This shows that fruit colors attract different animals.
B. This shows that humans see colors better than animals.
C. This shows that animals help spread fruit seeds to new places.
D. This shows that the environment plays a big role in fruit color.
( ) 24. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Birds prefer to live in areas with yellow fruits.
B. Animals see colors the same way as humans do.
C. Animals are not important for the survival of fruits.
D. Fruits with bright colors are more likely to be eaten by animals.
( ) 25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why fruits have different colors
