Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch like a seat. Mrs. Craven often sat there reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must have been.
The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed pretty nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly.
When Martha left her alone, Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out. “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

Great news for pet owners in China! Passengers can now bring certain pets on some high - speed trains. This is a new program by China Railway Express. The move is a first for the country’s railway system.
The service began its test run on April 10. It’s being tested on ten trains along the Beijing - Shanghai High - speed Railway. It only runs between five big stations: Beijing South, Jinan West, Nanjing South, Shanghai Hongqiao and Hangzhou East. People can book tickets for their pets using the 12306 ticket system at least two days before travel.
Not all pets can ride the train. So far, only pet cats and dogs are allowed on board. And they must be in good health. Owners are required to show a health certificate (证明) for their pets. Besides, the pet must be less than 15 kilograms and no taller than 40 centimeters at the shoulder.
Pets will be put in specially designed containers. These boxes are kept in a separate area away from passengers. Train workers will watch the pets during the trip and check on them every two hours. Water may be provided if needed, but pets cannot be fed during the trip.
The service follows a “same departure, same arrival” rule. That means owners and their pets must get on the train at the same station and get off together as well. Pet owners should arrive early to finish check - in, and pets must be picked up within one hour after arrival.
Pricing of the service is based on travel distance. For example, transporting a pet on a journey under 1000 kilometers will cost 558 yuan. During the trial period, it only costs 360 yuan.
Some pet owners are happy with the new service. Many others, however, are a bit worried about the safety of their pets. They hope that in the future their pets can sit next to them on the train.

What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination? Right. A pen.
Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.
Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheel, the introduction of the steam engine, the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of society.
In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus (纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.
The pen is very utilitarian (实用的). We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.
Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.
Let’s remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.
34. What is the writer trying to do in this passage?
A. Describe what a pen looks like. B. Introduce the history of the pen.
C. Advise people to prepare a new pen. D. Show the importance of the pen.

A. explain the use of electricity B. lower the students’ scores
C. stop social development D. change the law of the country
36. What can we learn from the passage?

Most of us have learned the virtue (美德) of honesty from some stories. The story of Pinocchio teaches the importance of telling the truth to us. Every time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows longer. These types of stories show children that “honesty is the best”. 41 The fact is that people lie for many reasons.
One reason people lie is to hide a mistake. While it is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time, some people do not have the courage to admit their mistakes because they are afraid that they will be blamed (责备). For example, students might lie to their teachers about unfinished homework. They might say that they left the homework at home. 42 These students do not want to get in trouble, so they make up an excuse.
43 Parents, particularly those with young children, may teach their children to use this type of “protective” lie in certain circumstances (状况). 44 Many parents teach their children to explain that their mother and father are too busy to come to the phone at that time. In this situation, a protective lie can mean greater safety.
45 Lying to keep the peace or to stay safe can have positive results. However, lying to stay out of trouble can lead to more trouble in the end. Understanding the motives behind the impulse (冲动) to lie might minimize this habit of lying.
A. In fact, they did not do the homework at all.
B. But why do so many people lie?
C. People lie for many reasons, both good and bad.
D. What should children do if a stranger calls while their parents are out?
E. Another reason for lying has to do with self - protection.

My Favorite Chinese Traditional Festival
With the development of China, more and more foreigners become interested in Chinese traditional culture, especially Chinese traditional festivals. There are many traditional festivals in China. My favourite one is Spring Festival.
During this festival, family members get together and have a big meal. And dumplings are the most traditional food. After dinner, people watch Spring Gala on TV till midnight. In most places, people like to let off fireworks to celebrate it. The reason why I like Spring Festival best is that I needn’t go to school. Besides, I can eat a lot of delicious food and get some red packets.
To make more people know about rich Chinese culture, I will make a homepage to spread it. Moreover, I’m going to study Chinese traditional culture hard.
My Favorite Chinese Traditional Festival
With the development of China, more and more foreigners become interested in Chinese traditional culture, especially Chinese traditional festivals. My favorite festival is Mid - Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calendar.
In traditional Chinese culture, the moon on the festival night is believed to be the fullest and brightest of the whole year, symbolizing family reunion.During the festival, my families who live far away try their best to go home and enjoy a big feast. Finally, at night we usually enjoy the moon, eating moon cakes and fruits and chatting. Through these traditional festivals, we can spread Chinese culture.
For me, I will teach others to make tasty moon cakes, which include mixed nuts, red beans, white lotus, salt yolk and fruits moon cakes. Everyone is very happy on the Mid - Autumn night. All in all, Mid - Autumn Festival is in autumn, my favorite season.
