由文第二个景点项下最后一句“A wide variety of plants can be found there, including one that is over 400 years old. ”(那里有各种各样的植物,包括一种树龄超过400年的植物。)可知,对植物感兴趣的同学应该去Botanic Gardens,故选C项。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。由文第一个景点项下最后一句“The splendid building, which opened in 1906, houses exhibits that are related to Belfast’s history and government.”(这座辉煌的建筑于1906年开放,展出了与贝尔法斯特历史和政府有关的展品。)和文第四个景点项下最后一句“Award-winning St. George’s Market was built in the1890s and is Belfast’s last remaining market housed in a Victorian building.”(屡获殊荣的圣乔治市场建于19世纪90年代,是贝尔法斯特仅存的一个维多利亚式建筑市场。) 由文末段最后一句“Everyone should take time to explore more in this beautiful city on the Lagan River”(每个人都应该花时间在这座位于拉甘河上的美丽城市里探索更多)可知,本文的目的是为了吸引更多的游客去到贝尔法斯特,故选B项。 B Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales. Recent research estimates that the population of Pacific gray whales off North America's West Coast has dwindled by almost a quarter since 2016. Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska. The National Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an “Unusual Mortality Event”. UMEs are declared when a “significant die-off” occurs and when information is collected to clarify why it occurs. The Arctic has historically low levels of sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains gray whales. Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year. Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition, which suggested they were not finding enough food during the summer. This die-off is alarmingly similar to the events of 20 years ago, when another UME resulted in a significant drop in the gray whale population. Although the cause was ultimately undetermined, it's thought that the population reached “carrying capacity”— it grew too large for the environment to support it. Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic. Gray whales, hunted almost to extinction by the mid-20th century, were one of the first to be protected from hunting. The Eastern North Pacific population rebounded without pressure from whaling and was taken off the Endangered Species List; the Western North Pacific population is still listed as endangered. This die-off is a reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's secure future. New threats arise, climate change upends habitats, and continued monitoring is needed in case a crash comes. 24. What does the underlined word “dwindled” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Increased. B. Bounced. C. Multiplied. D. Dropped. 25 What will gray whales usually do in winter? A. Consume few calories. B. Travel south to breed. C. March back to Alaska. D. Seek food in the Arctic. 26. What might be the main cause of the current UME? A. Serious illnesses. B. Sea pollution. C. Environmental changes. D. Limited carrying capacity. 27. What's the author's attitude to the “delisting”? A. Favorable. B. Concerned. C. Intolerant. D. Regretful. D 25. B 26. C 27. 根据下文“Starting in 2019, alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska.(从2019年开始,从墨西哥到阿拉斯加,人们在海滩上和海上发现了数量惊人的死灰鲸。)” 根据第二段的“Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year.(和其他迁徙者一样,它们不在冬季繁殖地或迁徙路线中进食,必须在夏季增加体重,以维持一年余下的时间。)”及“Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition(使用空中摄影的观察人员注意到,这些鲸鱼看起来更瘦了,抵达墨西哥时身体状况很差)”可推断出,灰鲸在冬天通常会南下到墨西哥繁殖,即Travel south to breed,故选B。 根据第三段的“Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well, it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.(虽然这种观点也被认为是导致这种灭绝的原因,但它更有可能被归咎于北极环境的变化。)” 根据最后一段的“This die-off is a reminder that “delisting” doesn't indicate a population's secure future.(这次灭绝提醒人们,“除名”并不意味着一个种群的未来就安全了。)” B。 C In science fiction movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, or Passengers, crew members are put into a state of sleep to take year-long journeys to space. Now a new study from Washington University has shown that human hibernation (冬眠) may soon become a reality. The research team carried out tests on rats—animals that do not naturally hibernate. They first identified a group of neurons (神经元) in a deep brain region, which were found to be involved in controlling body temperature during hibernation. They showed that, in mice, these neurons could be stimulated using ultrasound (超声波), which was delivered through a helmet without causing an injury. When receiving the ultrasound, the mice showed a drop in body temperature of about 3℃, and their heart rates fell by about 47%. When the ultrasound system was switched off, they woke up again. The result was "surprising and fascinating", said Hong Chen, a professor who led the work. Researchers are also trying to determine how to employ the power of hibernation to help humans. They believe that it could be key to addressing health conditions like heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Furthermore, hibernation's ability to slow aging, which was observed in bats, could benefit space exploration, enabling longer missions with less food requirements. Research in animals also suggests that bodies of hibernating astronauts might lose less bone and muscle, making them fit and ready to start challenging exploration soon after they wake up. The scientists now plan to look at how lowered body temperature might affect the cognitive (认知的) abilities of humans. "Our next experiments will test working memory in monkeys. This is important because while astronauts physically hibernate as they fly into deep space, their brain still needs to be working," said Chen. 28. Now a new study from Washington University has shown that human hibernation (冬眠) may soon become a reality.”(在《2001年:太空奥德赛》、《异形》或《乘客》等科幻电影中,船员被置于睡眠状态以进行长达一年的太空旅行。 根据文章第二段“They showed that, in mice, these neurons could be stimulated using ultrasound (超声波), which was delivered through a helmet without causing an injury.”(他们证明,在老鼠身上,这些神经元可以通过使用超声波来刺激,超声波通过头盔传递,不会造成伤害。) 根据文章第四段“Furthermore, hibernation's ability to slow aging, which was observed in bats, could benefit space exploration, enabling longer missions with less food requirements.”(此外,冬眠能够减缓衰老的能力,这在蝙蝠身上得到了观察,可能有利于太空探索,使得可以进行更长时间的任务,而且需要的食物更少。) 根据文章最后一段“The scientists now plan to look at how lowered body temperature might affect the cognitive abilities of humans.”(科学家们现在计划研究体温降低如何影响人类的认知能力)可知,科学家们现在计划研究体温降低会如何影响人类的认知能力,所以人类冬眠实验还未结束。故选C。 D For much of history, the practice of art was mysterious, and artists were viewed as being somewhat odd and often mad. Even the word most commonly associated with artists — inspiration — has its own magical qualities. Literally, the word “inspiration” means the breathing-in of a spirit. Artists were thought of as people who were uniquely inspired to create. Many artists credited their talents to the presence of some supernatural power. The Romantic poets believed that art was a term that meant an ultimate expression of beauty and truth. The search for this ideal led them to explore both natural and supernatural themes in their works. Another persistent view of art regarded its divorce from logic. Reason and logic were the province of scientists and philosophers, whereas creativity and insight were the area of the artists. The two separate aspects of the mind were supposed to remain distinct. But in 1704, a major breakthrough occurred. Sir Isaac Newton, mathematician and physicist, published his study of light, Opticks. One of Newton’s major discoveries was on the nature of color. Using a prism (棱镜), Newton provided a scientific explanation for the presence of rainbows. The artistic community was shocked. A scientist had ventured into their sacred territory. More than a hundred years later, John Keats, one of the most famous Romantic poets, accused Newton of reducing beauty by “unweaving the rainbow”. His colleague, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, famously remarked that the souls of five hundred Newtons would be needed to make one Shakespeare. And yet, from another perspective, Newton did not reduce the beauty of the rainbow; he enhanced it. In his search to uncover the secrets of the rainbow, Newton demonstrated the wonder, creativity, and inspiration of an artist. His discovery also paved the way for the development of spectroscopy, a way of analyzing the chemical makeup of light. Now scientists can look at the stars and know their composition. The sense of wonder this ability creates is not much different from the wonder the poet or artist feels when staring at those same stars. 32. According to the passage, what was the common view of artists in history? A. Their works focused on the supernatural. B. Their unique abilities came from within. C. They possessed both logic and magic. D. They were strange but indeed gifted. 33. How did the Romantic poets react to Newton’s discovery about light and color? A. They credited Newton’s insights to mystical influences. B. They felt it faded the poetic beauty of natural phenomena. C. They were inspired to integrate more scientific themes in their poetry. D. They believed it added a new dimension to the appreciation of beauty. 34. Why does the author mention John Keats’ and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s views on Newton? A. To contrast their criticism with science’s artistic value. B. To highlight the effect of scientific breakthroughs on art. C. To show Romantic poets’ objection to scientific progress. D. To emphasize the superior creativity of poets over scientists. 35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. Distinguishing Art from Science B. Isaac Newton’s Influence on Arts C. Shared Wonder of Art and Science D. The Artistic Interpretation of Science 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. Tony is their grandpa, whose age is 70 this year. The two grandsons like to take exercise with their grandpa and even go out on adventures. In the summer of last year, they paid a visit to Stone Mountain Park with their grandpa. They had the opportunity to spend the day with their grandpa, seeing the various beautiful sights and attractions. One thing that three of them had really desired to do was climb to the top of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn’t a very high mountain and fortunately there are some walking routes to the top of it, but for the two teenagers, along with a rather old grandpa, it’s a difficult task. Daniel and Lucas were much more interested in the walk than their grandpa, and they viewed it as an exciting adventure. But climbing the mountain was a rather big challenge for Tony, who was old and thin. He decided to start the slow walk up to the mountain. It seemed like that Tony was taking forever to climb just a short distance, but considering his personal safety, he had to remind himself that it took him two steps to equal his grandsons’ one step. When he walked closer to his grandsons, he had to stop for a while to regain energy, and then tried to catch up with them, over and over again. Tony was very tired. He just wanted to arrive at the top of the mountain as soon as possible to enjoy the beauty of the mountain top. But the twin grandsons were not focused at all on the trial of climbing the mountain. On the contrary, they were simply enjoying the journey of the walk. They enjoyed all that they had seen and all that they had heard along the way up to the top of the mountain. They stopped now and then to look at every large rock and observe the unusual plant formations. Suddenly, they found a strange plant. Daniel called out, “Grandpa, here is a special plant. Come and have a look.” Tony was hurrying towards his grandsons when he fell down. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Daniel and Lucas wondered how to get their grandpa to the top of the mountain. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: Tony was hurrying towards his grandsons when he fell down. He looked down and saw his foot caught on a tree root. He tried to stand up but failed. Daniel and Lucas waited for some time and then looked back, only to find their grandpa struggling to stand on his feet. They put aside their curiosity, running quickly towards their grandpa. Daniel kept comforting him nervously. Meanwhile, Lucas tore off the root and examined Tony’s feet. There were no wounds but Tony was unable to walk. Daniel and Lucas wondered how to get their grandpa to the top of the mountain. Facing the sudden problem, they responded positively. Lucas who knew the first-aid knowledge treated Tony’s feet. Then, seeing their Grandpa really wanted to reach the top, he said happily, “Why don’t we take turns carrying our grandpa to the top of the mountain?” Daniel said OK immediately. In this way, they finally enjoyed the great scenery on the mountaintop. 登顶:get to the top/reach the top 情绪类 ①.紧张地:nervously/anxiously ②.开心地:happily/merrily 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales. The Arctic has historically low levels of sea ice in recent years upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains gray whales. A. Increased. B. Bounced. C. Multiplied. D. Dropped. 25. What will gray whales usually do in winter? A. Consume few calories. B. Travel south to breed. C. March back to Alaska. D. Seek food in the Arctic. 26. What might be the main cause of the current UME? A. Serious illnesses. B. Sea pollution. C. Environmental changes. D. Limited carrying capacity. 27. What's the author's attitude to the “delisting”? A. Favorable. B. Concerned. C. Intolerant. D. Regretful. C In science fiction movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, or Passengers, crew members are put into a state of sleep to take year-long journeys to space. 28. Why are the movies mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To highlight the creativity of filmmakers. B. To introduce the topic of human habitation. C. To show the popularity of science fiction movies. D. To explain the impact of movies on scientific research. 29. How did researchers make the mice hibernate? A. By pausing their heartbeats. B. By simulating their brain neurons. C. By making them sleep with helmets. D. By exposing them to low temperature. 30. How might hibernation benefit humans according to the text? A. People might no longer suffer from diseases. B. People might stay young as long as they wish. C. Average people might be able to travel to space. D. Astronauts might remain in space for a longer period. 31. What does the author mainly intend to tell us in the last paragraph? A. It is extremely challenging to be an astronaut. B. There is always a gap between fiction and reality. C. The hibernation experiment is far from complete. D. The hibernation experiment remains to be tested on astronauts. D For much of history, the practice of art was mysterious, and artists were viewed as being somewhat odd and often mad. The Artistic Interpretation of Science Animals have their own unique ways of communicating, which play an important role in their survival and social interactions. The communication signals are various and have developed over countless generations, finely adjusted to meet their specific needs. ____36____ One common form of animal communication is through vocalizations. Birds are masters of this. For example, the melodious songs of nightingales aren’t just for our enjoyment. Males sing to mark their territory, warning other males to stay away. ____37____ The more powerful the song is, the more likely the female is to mate. ____38____ Wolves use a complex system of body postures. When a wolf holds its tail high and stiff, it shows its power in its group. In contrast, a relaxed, loosely wagging tail indicates a friendly mood. Submissive wolves, on the other hand, will lower their bodies, tuck their tails, and avoid direct eye contact, communicating their non-threatening status. Chemical signals, often in the form of pheromones (信息素), are widely used too. Ants release pheromones along its way to lead fellow ants to food sources. ____39____ Female moths can detect the pheromones of male moths from miles away, enabling them to find each other for mating. Some animals even use visual displays. Peacocks (孔雀) spread their beautiful tails in a dazzling fan. This isn’t just for show; it’s a way to attract peahens during the breeding season. ____40____ The more brilliant the display is, the more likely they are to catch a female’s eye and pass on their genes. In conclusion, the animal kingdom’s communication systems are a wonder of nature. Understanding these communication methods gives us a fascinating peek into the animal kingdom’s hidden social lives. A. People recognize the signals suggesting changes. B. It’s like a map guiding them to find the destination. C. A wagging tail can mean friendliness or excitement. D. And another purpose is to catch the attention of a female. E. Body language is also an important way to communicate. F The bright colors and patterns show good health and genetic quality. G. By understanding these signals, we can appreciate the animal world more easily. Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune (沙丘) is widely considered one of the best sci-fi books ever written. They are teenagers, studying in the same class. Their teenage life is rich and colorful.
