As for me, I joined the Care and Community Project in Tanzania, East Africa, which was organised by Projects Abroad. I was there for two weeks. Every single day we, the volunteers, would head out from where we were staying to the Relini Centre. The centre is a school, and we were there to teach the children simple English and mathematics. The classrooms were small and the students would sit there quietly waiting for their teachers to arrive, showing great eagerness to learn new things. One of the students, called Afia, was trying to learn how to write numbers from one to 10, but she kept having trouble with six. My Swahili wasn’t very good-I only knew some basic phrases-so I kept telling her: “Soma sita.” I thought I was telling Afia to write down the number six, but it turned out I was telling her to read out loud the number six, which is why she would keep saying “Sita” back to me instead of copying down what I wrote. In the end, I held her hand and showed her how to write the number, and after many attempts, she was able to do it on her own. I was very proud. It felt as if I had made a difference in her life. We also fixed up the dining hall together -a difficult task as we had to transport mud (泥) and paint under the burning sun. But we didn’t slack off (懈怠), as we knew our work would create a better place for the children to lear. I know my two weeks in Africa may not have made a big difference, but I hope that I have helped in some small way. Even the tiniest of ripples (涟漪) can disturb (搅乱) a lake, and I hope with this article I can move students just like me to do something. 4. What did the author do during the summer? A. She found a well-paying job. B. She did a lot of extra studying. C. She visited an old friend abroad. D. She worked as a teaching volunteer. 5. What problem did the author face in getting along with Afia? A. The author had difficulty counting large numbers. B. The author struggled with the local language. C. They had limited time together. D. They faced a big age gap. 6. Why did the author and her partners fix up the Relini Centre’s dining hall together? A. To get to know each other better. B. To develop more practical skills. C. To make a better learning environment. D. To encourage more kids to come to the centre. 7. What can be the best title for the text? A. Big changes start with little steps B. Visiting a place is the key to understanding it C. Showing is more effective than telling in education D. Hard conditions inspire a greater interest in learning C Duncan McCabe shared a 27-second digital art video, and it took him 10 months and about 700 miles-to make it. McCabe, 32, an excellent runner and animation (动画) lover, set out on a journey in January to create a dancing stick figure. He made it using the popular GPS-tracking app Strava, which allows runners to record their routes (路线). Using Strava’s map function, McCabe recorded 120 runs -and when he strung each of the maps together, it showed a hat-wearing stick figure dancing to the song “Purple Hat” across the streets of Toronto. McCabe’s video is part of a growing movement known as GPS art, which means using apps like Strava with location-tracking features to create digital drawings over a map of a specific region. Rather than just one piece of static (静态的) GPS art, McCabe’s video includes many runs, requiring careful planning. McCabe was not deterred by the time required or the difficulty of mapping the routes. “If I have a long-term goal, I’m ready to work for a very long time,” said McCabe. McCabe had seen other people try their hand at GPS designs but none of them were in video form. “As far as I know, it’s an original idea. I’m pioneering Strava animation,” he said. Last Christmas, McCabe was chatting with his wife about ideas for a Strava animation, and she recommended a dancing figure. McCabe actually ran farther than the app gave him credit for, as he would often have to run one to two miles while stopping the app to create diagonal lines (斜线) he needed to draw. “Honestly, it was tiring. But the project brought me a sense of achievement,” said McCabe. “It’s creativity coming out of somewhere you wouldn’t expect it. It’s fun.” 8. What did McCabe spend 10 months doing? A. Setting a world record in the running field. B. Developing a new GPS-tracking app. C. Learning how to make animation. D. Making a dancing stick figure. 9. What does the underlined word “deterred” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Controlled. B. Encouraged. C. Stopped. D. Supported. 10. What inspired McCabe to start his project? A. A challenge from his friends. B. A suggestion from his wife. C. A special festival event. D. A funny online video. 11. How does McCabe find his running experience? A. Challenging but satisfying. B. Dangerous but interesting. C. Tiring but money-making. D. Boring but eye-catching. D In 2018, Vienna used its first smart traffic lights, which were specifically designed to increase pedestrian (行人) safety. After years of improvement, the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) researchers have now rolled out the second generation. The new system is programmed to provide greater help to pedestrians with walking aids, wheelchairs, and even baby strollers (婴儿车). People with limited mobility (移动能力) are more at risk when crossing busy streets. Pedestrians using wheelchairs, for example, are 36 percent more likely to die in a car-related accident when compared to those hit while standing. This is often due to a lot of factors, including potentially reduced visibility (可能降低的能见度) for drivers and longer crossing times for pedestrians in wheelchairs. While smart traffic light cameras can identify the majority of pedestrians, they often have difficulty doing so for pedestrians with limited mobility. According to TU Graz, new smart traffic lights may greatly address these previous limitations. This is thanks to thousands of times more computing power than the original programming. “This allows us to use a more advanced machine learning model, which means that people can be identified more easily,” project manager Horst Possegger said. “People with limited mobility usually need longer to cross the road. Our traffic light system can easily recognize such needs and keep the green light on when necessary.” Every camera covers a 323-square-foot waiting area around each smart traffic light to which pedestrians will cross the street at any time. Privacy is a major concern for the designers here, as well. In every situation, cameras process and delete real-time image data in less than 50 milliseconds. The only information stored for later use is the number of pedestrians, as well as their potential mobility restriction classifications System designers hope that this data could soon help the city improve traffic light systems, or even finally redesign smart light schedules. 12. Who will particularly benefit from the new smart traffic lights? A. People driving cars. B. People running fast. C. People using wheelchairs. D. People following traffic rules. 13. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the new smart traffic lights? A. Their necessity. B. Their costs. C. Their popularity. D. Their limitations. 14. How does the new system work? A. By controlling the green time. B. By giving some voice instructions. C. By identifying if an accident has happened. D. By guessing how many pedestrians will cross the road. 15. What do the designers pay attention to according to the last paragraph? A. Adding more cameras. B. Protecting pedestrian privacy. C. Making the cameras work faster. D. Recording when pedestrians cross the streets Adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals is easier than you think. The thought of balancing on two wheels filled me with a mix of excitement and worry. My friend Lily sensed my desire (渴望) and decided to teach me how to ride. On a sun-kissed afternoon, Lily arrived at my doorstep with a bike. “Today is the day, Sheila! You’re going to learn to ride,” she said with determination in her eyes. Nervous but excited, I decided to give it a go. Lily adjusted (调整) the seat, offering great encouragement as she guided me through the basics of balance and pedaling. Under Lily’s encouragement and patient guidance, I began my cycling journey. With Lily supporting my bike, I started to pedal very slowly. Although each wobble (摇晃) filled me with anxiety and self-doubt, Lily’s support and encouragement kept me moving forward. Everything seemed to be going well. “You’re doing great, Sheila! Keep pedaling and don’t be afraid! I’m right behind you,” Lily cheered, accompanying (陪伴) me every step of the way. I gradually found my balance and pedaled with more confidence. “Lily, I think I’ve learned how to ride a bike! This is cool!” I excitedly said. However, when Lily slowly let go of the bike, nervousness took hold of me. The realization that I was now responsible for my balance hit hard. At that moment I lost my balance and fell to the ground. The fall was not just physical but also a blow to my confidence. Doubts about my ability to master cycling began to cloud my mind. The pain of the fall made me unable to stop crying. I lay on the ground and wanted to give up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ To my surprised, I succeeded. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年度第二学期高一期中考试题 英语 满分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 注意事项: 1. 1.How many kilograms of apples does the woman buy? But we didn’t slack off (懈怠), as we knew our work would create a better place for the children to lear. I know my two weeks in Africa may not have made a big difference, but I hope that I have helped in some small way. McCabe had seen other people try their hand at GPS designs, but none of them were in video form. 8. D 9. C 10. B 11. He made it using the popular GPS-tracking app Strava, which allows runners to record their routes.(32岁的McCabe是一名优秀的跑步者和动画爱好者,他在1月开始了一段旅程,目的是创造一个跳舞的火柴人。 根据上文“Rather than just one piece of static (静态的) GPS art, McCabe’s video includes many runs, requiring careful planning.(麦凯布的视频并非只是一幅静态的 GPS 艺术作品,而是包含了多次跑步,这需要精心的规划。)”和下文““If I have a long-term goal, I’m ready to work for a very long time,” said McCabe.(“如果我有一个长期目标,我愿意为之长期努力,”麦凯布说。)” 根据第五段“Last Christmas, McCabe was chatting with his wife about ideas for a Strava animation, and she recommended a dancing figure.(去年圣诞节,McCabe和他的妻子在讨论Strava动画的想法,她推荐了一个跳舞的火柴人。)” 根据最后一段“Honestly, it was tiring. But the project brought me a sense of achievement.(老实说,这很累人。 A。 D In 2018, Vienna used its first smart traffic lights, which were specifically designed to increase pedestrian (行人) safety. D. Recording when pedestrians cross the streets 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I lay on the ground and wanted to give up. Lily rushed to my side with a look of concern on her face. She helped me up and brushed off the dirt. “It’s okay, Sheila. Everyone falls when they’re learning to ride. It’s all part of the process,” Lily said with a soft but encouraging voice. Her words offered me a sense of comfort and I decided to challenge myself once more. I got back on the bike, ready to try again. To my surprise, I succeeded. I focused on maintaining my balance and staying calm. With each passing moment, my confidence grew. I rode down the street with Lily by my side, and a sense of achievement washed over me. Lily’s face lit up with pride and joy as she saw me master the bicycle. I never thought that one day I would learn how to ride a bike and this journey not only equipped me with a new skill but also taught me the importance of never giving up and the invaluable support of a friend. 词汇激活 行为类 ①猛冲:rush/dash ②决心:decide/determine ③专注于:focus on/concentrate on 情绪类 ①担心:concern/worry ②喜悦:joy/pleasure 【点睛】【高分句型1】Lily rushed to my side with a look of concern on her face.(运用了with的复合结构) 【高分句型2】Lily’s face lit up with pride and joy as she saw me master the bicycle.
