We may take some time to praise those who took action, but we rarely get to see the lasting effects of the hero’s deeds. That’s why it’s been fascinating to hear the story of Xavier Dimples. When he was 2 years old, his house caught fire, trapping him inside. The young boy nearly died during the disaster; however, a brave firefighter named Jeff Ohs rescued him from the flames and made him become conscious again. Now, 23 years after this dramatic incident, they had a moving meet up, and the fireman got to see the happy consequence of having saved a life that day. Dimples shared his story on Twitter, posting side by side pictures of him as a toddler in Ohs’ arms after being saved, alongside a present-day image. “I ended up dying that day. This firefighter. Jeff Ohs, saved me and brought me back to life,” the man writes, thanking the fireman profusely. The highest praise came in the form of being introduced to a little someone. The fireman got to meet Dimples’ 2-year-old son — the same age the new dad was when he was saved from the fire. “Now 23 years later he is holding my 2-year-old son. I literally wouldn’t be here without him.” The young man also added being rescued from the fire didn’t mean danger was over for him. “Because I was in a coma (昏迷) for a month after that.” Dimples also posted a couple of pictures of the dramatic moments in which Ohs brought him back to life in the yard of his home. “Looking at these is so crazy,” he admitted with emotion. Fortunately, it all worked in the end. Over two decades, the man is thriving and has a family of his own. As for Ohs, although retiring from his position, he continues to be an advocate for firefighters, offering guidance on how to prevent injuries. Even though 23 years passed, Dimples is still reminded of the deep bond established between Ohs and him. That’s what the hero’s deeds mean to everyone. 24. What do we know about Xavier Dimples? A. He was stuck in a wildfire. B. He narrowly escaped a tough situation. C. He invited the media to have a live broadcast. D. He exchanged some photos with Jeff Ohs with gratitude. 25. How has Jeff Ohs persistently played a firefighter’s role? A. He has delivered speeches to the neighbourhood. B. He has devoted all his time to offering courses. C. He has provided professional coaching on fire safety. D. He has still undertaken some rescue work voluntarily. 26. Which of the following can best describe Jeff Ohs? A. Enthusiastic and generous. B. Keen and considerate. C. Intelligent and humble. D. Courageous and committed. 27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To honor a hero’s lasting influence. B. To record an unforgettable ceremony. C. To show sympathy for the pitiful victims. D. To praise what firefighters do in the community. C History was recently made at a half-marathon in Beijing. In addition to welcoming 12, 000 runners, the race also featured 21 robot participants. The only design rule for the competing robots was that they were bipedal (双足行走的) instead of running on wheels. Otherwise, it was a free for all, resulting in interesting design choices with mixed results. The strategies used included robots with kid-sized sneakers, or shoes made out of tape. Some didn’t have a head, while others did, resulting in teams fixing them mid-race to prevent them from falling. Others used knee pads (护膝) to prevent them from breaking in case they fall downwards — and many of them did. Only six of the 21 robots finished the race. Running on a separate track from the human competitors, almost every robot faced difficulties, from falling down to overheating. One robot needed a cooling pad to make it to the end while others had liquid sprayed on them. All robots were accompanied by two or three human operators who ran beside them to help control their speed with control panels or to clear their path. The winner was a robot named Tiangong Ultra, designed by UB Tech and the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. It finished the race in two hours and 40 minutes. Despite being the robot victor, its path was not free of accidents either. It fell down once and its team had to change its batteries three times. “Until five years ago or so, we didn’t really know how to get robots to walk reliably,” Alan Fem, a robotics professor at Oregon State. “And now we do, and this will be a good demonstration of that.” Fern also noted that there’s no market demand for running robots, which likely explains why it’s not a priority for developers, adding that it was definitely interesting to see them follow instructions in a challenging environment. As such, the half-marathon provided them with a platform to showcase their hardware robustness (稳定性). Ultimately, there’s no need to worry — a robot will likely not beat you in a race. Not right now anyway. 28. How did the robot participants perform in the half-marathon? A Uniform style of robots attracted public attention. B. All robot participants operated with the aid of teammates. C. Half of the robot participants lost their balance and fell down. D. Six robot participants quit the race because of the high temperature. 29. What barriers did the robot participants meet during the race? A. It was forbidden to charge the batteries. B. Human operators could not control their running speed. C. Running together with human competitors disturbed them. D. Some of them fell down and others had to be cooled with liquid. 30. What is special about the winner Tiangong Ultra? A. It defeated other running robot participants smoothly. B. It wouldn't have won the championship without its team's aid. C. It had the longest battery life among the robot participants. D. It set a good example for the marketers and other robot participants. 31. What can be inferred from Alan Fern's comment? A. The market for running robots will definitely boom. B. Humanoid robots will dominate humans sooner or later. C. Running robots could not follow instructions in different situations. D. Every small step in the half-marathon race is one giant leap in robotics. D Currently, tens of thousands of caves are known globally, but many of the world’s caves still remain unexplored. “Caving is the last realm where true, pure exploration is possible,” says Phil Short, a cave explorer. “And in caves, treasures can be found, new species, new cures for disease.” adds Short. Some caves are reported to have their own weather system. Some contain the secrets of human evolution, and of the life that came before us. Some are hot spots of biodiversity. Entomologist Leonidas-Romanos Davranoglou at Oxford University trekked to the Cyclops Mountains in the Papuan region of Indonesia. In a previously unknown cave system, his team discovered a “treasure trove” of underground species, including blind spiders, blind harvestman and a whip scorpion (鞭尾蝎) — all new to science. For more than 20 years, geomicrobiologist Hazel Barton has been studying microscopic life, found deep underground, that can survive extreme starvation. Her research is furthering our understanding of what the ability to photosynthesise (光合作用) might tell us about the possibility of life in outer space. “A kilometre from the entrance, there’s still photosynthesis,” says Barton, “but it’s pushed into the near-infrared wavelength (近红外波长). There are stars that only emit in those wavelengths. So, this could help us understand how life is possible on other planets.” she says. Cave exploration, says Barton, is the closest you can come to being an astronaut without going to space. “You’ re the first person to see something. 10, 000 years from now, the footprints I made in Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico, or the Tepui Caves of Venezuela, could still be there.” “Nowadays, it’s hard to impress people,” says Short, “but in caves you can see something different every time.” 32. What does the underlined word “realm” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. A sort of extreme sports. B. A new kind of microscopic life. C. An area of activity or knowledge. D. The process of species’ evolution. 33. What can be learned from the text? A. Caves are extremely difficult to access. B. Photosynthesis doesn’t happen in the cave. C. Phil Short developed new skills for exploration. D Hazel Barton’s research enriched science knowledge. 34. What is the advantage of cave exploration according to Barton? A. It helps scientists get pioneering discoveries. B. It sets people free from heavy working pressure. C. It enhances the fame and wins the glory for scientists. D. It provides a more comfortable working environment. 35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text? A Cave Exploration Is Getting More Dangerous. B. Cave Exploration Contributes to Astronomy. C. Scientists Are Exploring the Deep Dark Earth. D. Unexplored Caves Worldwide Are Still There. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The brain is a wonderful organ. It is the source of all thoughts and actions. Victor immediately played a joke with the young man, “Is it a big deal inside?” but his reaction was unexpected. Nobody knew there was a book inside and Tommy was attracted by its old charm, guessing that it was something special. He visited the pawn shop simply to investigate further. What did Tommy find out about the book — why it was so special, and how it ended up in the at tic (阁楼) of Grandma Alice? Tommy was enjoying the warmth of the summer sun while feasting on an ice cream treat with his grandmother. It was mid-summer vacation and he had been asked to assist his grandmother in cleaning out her attic. As they were doing so, they discovered a variety of interesting items that had not been seen since the death of Grandma Alice's husband, Grandpa Glenn. Grandma Alice was unable to climb up the stairs and did not need any of the attic’s contents. As she was planning to retire after the summer, Tommy was asked to help her with the attic clean-out. Most of the items found could be donated to charitable organizations or used as second-hand items. Grandma Alice provided Tommy with a box to collect the items he desired to keep. There was a box of things that Tommy had collected and he had it put under the bed. but it had slipped from his memory for a while. One day, while cleaning out Grandma Alice’s room, he found it again. He decided to look again at all the stuff he had collected. There were some old photo albums, with lots of pictures of his grandparents as kids, a few DVDs, and some of Tommy’s old toys from his childhood. What do economists now think about minimum wage laws? A. They all agree they’re bad. B. Their opinions have changed. C. They strongly support them. 16. How does David describe economic theories’ development? A. Like changing seasons. B. Like growing trees. C. Like building houses. 【答案】14. A 15. B 16. B 【解析】 【原文】W: Hello, everyone. Today we have David E. Card with us. Mr. Card, what first got you interested in economics? M: Well, I was studying physics in college when my girlfriend took a basic economics course. She needed help with some math problems, so I tried to help her. W: What happened next? M: When I read her textbook, I discovered many interesting ideas I’d never heard before. After reading most of the book, I decided to take an economics class myself. W: That’s fascinating! What important lessons did you learn? M: Back then, professors always said things like “minimum wage laws hurt workers” or some other concepts. But these days, economists don’t all agree on that anymore. W: How should young people handle such changing ideas? M: It’s hard to change people’s minds once they’re set. Focus on proving your own ideas through good research. First, always check the evidence. Second, remember that economics grows like a tree. Old leaves fall, new branches grow. Your generation will water this tree with fresh perspectives. W: Wonderful metaphor! Any last thoughts? M: Economics isn’t about being right or wrong. It’s about asking better questions — just like that confused physics student who became an economist! 听下面一段独白,回答以下小题。【此处可播放相关音频,请去附件查看】 17. Participants often have meals to relax themselves afterwards. 【答案】17 C 18. A 19. A 20. C 【解析】 【原文】Many people have heard about the walking goal of 10,000 steps a day. This advice dates back to a 1960s marketing campaign in Japan. But experts note that this is only a guideline. Shmied said the average American walks about 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day, and it is fine to increase that number to 10,000. Setting a time goal can also be useful. Shmied suggests dividing the recommended 150 minutes per week into 30 minutes a day, or 10 minutes three times a day, for five days. During rainy or snowy weather, people can walk in malls or on treadmills. As they become experienced walkers, they can speed up or walk up hills while still keeping the activity level moderate. “If you can talk but not sing,” Eby said, “that’s what we consider moderate-intensity exercise.” Walking clubs have appeared across the nation. In 2022, 31-year-old personal trainer Brianna Joye Kohn started City Girls Who Walk with a TikTok post inviting others to walk with her in New York. “We had 250 girls show up,” she said. Since then, the group has walked every Sunday for around 40 minutes, with some meeting afterwards for a meal or coffee. 第二部分 阅读 (共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Looking for the right online art courses to further your creative skills? 【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. A. Uniform style of robots attracted public attention. 【答案】28. B 29. D 30. B 31. D. Hazel Barton’s research enriched science knowledge. A. Cave Exploration Is Getting More Dangerous. B. Cave Exploration Contributes to Astronomy. C. Scientists Are Exploring the Deep Dark Earth. D. Unexplored Caves Worldwide Are Still There. 【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. There are stars that only emit in those wavelengths. So, this could help us understand how life is possible on other planets.” she says.(巴顿说道:“从入口处往外一公里的地方,仍然存在光合作用,只不过它被推向了近红外波长。 根据第七段中的“Cave exploration, says Barton, is the closest you can come to being an astronaut without going to space. “You’ re the first person to see something. 10, 000 years from now, the footprints I made in Lechuguilla Cave in New Mexico, or the Tepui Caves of Venezuela, could still be there.”(巴顿说,洞穴探险是在不进入太空的情况下,最接近成为宇航员的体验。“你是第一个看到某些事物的人。从现在起一万年后,我在新墨西哥州的莱楚吉亚洞穴,或者委内瑞拉的特普伊洞穴留下的脚印,可能仍然还在那里。”)”可推断,巴顿认为洞穴探索的优势是帮助科学家获得开创性发现。故选A项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Currently, tens of thousands of caves are known globally, but many of the world’s caves still remain unexplored.(目前,全球已知的洞穴有上万处,但世界上许多洞穴仍未被探索。)” The brain is a wonderful organ. It is the source of all thoughts and actions. But sometimes your brain can get ahead of you and you could start overthinking. ___36___. Luckily there are some things you can do to slow your brain down. Here are four ways that you can train yourself. Pay Attention to Your Emotions A lot of times overthinking is from an emotional response to something. One of the best things you can do is to take a step back and ask yourself what you are feeling. Are you angry? Anxious? Scared? ___37___. Do Something for Somebody Another thing you can do to help reduce your negative thoughts is to do something to help someone else. ___38___. It doesn’t matter whether you are cooking some food for a sick friend, or paving for a stranger’s coffee at your local café, and just the act of making someone else’s day better will make your day better. ___39___ It is easy to become judge mental when filled with negative and overwhelming thoughts. However, one of the keys to stopping those negative thoughts is to cease to judge. Try to observe yourself and the world around you from a non-judgmental position. Acknowledge Your Success One of the more troublesome aspects of overthinking is the tendency anxious thoughts have to overshadow any positive thoughts. ___40___ . Making your bed in the morning is enough to count as a success. Soon enough, they will start to add up and you will find that making these lists of your daily accomplishments can help you stay positive. So the next time you find yourself overcome with racing thoughts and anxiety, slow down, take a step back and follow these four tips. A. Quit Judging B. Release Emotions C. Happiness is often stored in being of service to others D. Once you start overthinking, it is often hard to stop, and it can be seriously distressing E. Naming your emotions is one of the most effective measures you can take F. That is why you should start tracing your successes when caught in negativity G. But you don’t have to experience a transition in order to breathe new life 【答案】36. D 37. E 38. C 39. A 40. Disappointment washed over Tommy, yet curiosity grew stronger. Determined to uncover its secrets, Tommy put the book under a lamp on purpose. The book cover felt like a special kind of leather — aged yet mysterious. Under the lamp, faint marks emerged, which caught his eye because it seemed that someone had written them in pencil with great pressure. Guessing Victor might have clues, Tommy rushed to the pawn shop, breathless. He took the book out of his bag and put it down on the counter, and Victor’s eyes went wide. “This belonged to Captain Glenn, didn’t it?” he murmured, emotion thickening his voice. The book, he explained, was a long-lost record of a local noble family, containing precious stories and historical events. Victor offered a high price, eager to make a deal. Tommy refused. Instead, he resolved to donate it to the local library, hoping others could uncover treasures as he had done.
