I misses cramer, the head library. Now let me tell you about our library. It's in the building behind the administration building where we are now. The whole here is larger than any room at the library. So we are meeting here. Next to me are my three assistance. On the left is mary, and on the right is gina. Between them is Daniel. Gina is in charge of a computer lab, and you should see her to reserve time on any of our computers. SHE also needs some help. So if you are interested in computers and would like a few hours of work, please see her. Mary is in charge of keeping all the books. Daniel is the head of our reference department. He can be of assistance when you're researching subjects or writing papers. The hours are on the paper you were given when you came in. But sometimes we are open on special hours. For example, during family week, when your parents are invited to visit the school, we are open every evening. We like to think of a library as a place where people come for a place to study. If you like a lot of conversation, then the student center is the place for that. Mary, gina and Daniel will show you around the library and explain everything to you later. The best restaurants in London all have great food, and offer a fantastic experience. And all at the right price. This doesn’t necessarily mean cheap, but definitely does mean value for money.
Kiln
Price: Mid-range
When to go: When your funds are running low.
What to have: The superbly tender, spiced beef is a true crowd-pleaser.
Kiln is a continuation of the Thai barbecue theme. Its simple, stripped-back (精简) look work perfectly with the style of cooking. Quality, Brit-sourced meat and fish are grilled, and served with the flavor-packed sauces typical of rural Thailand.
Hoppers
Price: Affordable
When to go: When you want to say to your mouth, “you SHALL go to the ball!”
What to have: The Indian bread.
Hoppers is exclusively Sri Lankan. The small room is always full, but it’s more than worth the wait. If small plates, full flavors and unapologetic spicing are your bag, Hoppers will get your pulse and your taste buds (味蕾) racing.
Bright
Price: Mid-range
When to go: When you’re bored of all other food.
What to have: Look out for the likes of homemade pizza or pasta.
Eating at Bright is a little like eating in a glass box, which maybe you don’t expect to like, but that’s a good thing: There is less to take your attention away from the food. The compact menu changes daily, but is generally a mix of modernish small plates.
Social Eating House
Price: Blowout
When to go: When you want a high-priced menu without the formality.
What to have: Skillful cocktails in style.
Social Eating House’s dark dining room, with its mirrored ceiling and modern artworks, feels cool and informal, while the menu delivers dishes that are at once highly varied, accessible and above all delicious.
21.What do all the restaurants have in common?
A.Attracting wealthy people. B.Having modern dining rooms.
C.Providing worthwhile food. D.Offering fantastic views.
22.What can we know about Hoppers?
A.It usually holds dance balls. B.It always needs queuing for.
C.It changes your taste buds. D.It rarely offers Sri Lankan dishes.
23.Which restaurant suits you best if you want to eat in an artistic environment?
A.Kiln. B.Hoppers. C.Bright. D.Social Eating House.
B
In 2011, an iPhone fell into my hands. This smart technology seemed like an entrance to fun and positive things like chatting with friends and blogging.
However, six years later, I had become horribly chained to it. Recent reports show that I’m not the only one. According to a 2017 study the average American spends 5 hours a day on smart devices and about 2.5 hours are spent on social media, messaging, news and entertainment applications.
It’s hard to explain when the love and joy I felt for my iPhone turned into dependency. But now, I fall asleep next to my phone every night and wake to it each morning. I check the weather app every morning before I choose how to dress for the day. I use it to help me navigate(导航)a city I should know well enough on my own. I update my inbox every time I pick up my phone.
As with any addiction, my phone dependency began to impact my life. While spending time with family, I’d stare into a small screen on my lap instead of engaging at a level I would have a few years back. At work, my productivity levels dropped. And then, my four-year relationship came to an end. Eventually, I was left with years of memories and a mobile phone that couldn’t provide enjoyable company across the dinner table, share the joys of experiencing a concert or kiss me goodnight before bed.
Now, I move through life with more purpose and intention. I’ve cut back on carelessly giving away my limited time and attention to my phone. Instead, I focused my efforts on being as present as possible. Training the mind to stay present is a long and challenging road, but it’s important to start somewhere.
I hope you’ll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a role you are letting it play in your life. Whether or not you’ve reached a place in your life where your screen time feels problematic, there’s no harm in mindfully giving your current practices some thought.
24.What can best describe Americans’ use of smart technology?
A.They are ruined by it. B.They are inspired by it.
C.They are tied to it D.They are good at it.
25.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.She became addicted to a mobile phone.
B.She benefited a lot from a mobile phone.
C.She felt joyful when using a mobile phone.
D.She lived a colorful life with a mobile phone.
26.What was the bad effect of a mobile phone on the author?
A.She became short-sighted. B.She became less efficient at work.
C.She was disliked by her family. D.She didn’t have a mind of her own.
27.What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.Everyone should reassess their screen time.
B.People are too dependent on mobile phones.
C.Mobile phones have side effects on people’s lives.
D.It’s time for everyone to put their mobile phone aside.

Art has always been a basic part of human society, serving many purposes and reflecting the cultural, social, and emotions of human experiences. It is not merely a form of artistic pleasure but also a powerful tool for expression, communication, and even social change.
Firstly, art acts as a mirror of society, catching the spirit of the times in which it is created. It reflects the values, beliefs, and standards of a particular era, providing future generations with a visual and emotional record of the past. For example, the Renaissance paintings of the 14th to 17th centuries not only showed the artistic techniques of the time but also mirrored the intellectual and cultural rebirth of Europe.
Secondly, art is a form of communication beyond language barriers. It allows individuals from different linguistic backgrounds to connect on a deeper level, understanding and empathizing with the emotions and ideas conveyed through visual, hearing or performance mediums. This universality (普遍性) is one of the reasons why art has the power to bridge cultural divides and foster global understanding.
Thirdly, art is a catalyst (催化剂) for creativity and innovation. It encourages individuals to think outside the box and challenge traditional wisdom. The process of creating art encourages the imagination and can lead to breakthroughs in various fields, from science to business. Moreover, the appreciation of art can inspire new ways of thinking and problem-solving.
However, some people think that the role of art in society is weakening due to the new technology and commercial interests. Critics believe that the focus on too much entertainment and over consumption has led to a decline in the appreciation of fine arts.
In conclusion, art continues to be a vital force for self-expression, cultural preservation, and intellectual exploration, and it is up to society to ensure that this continues to be the case.
28.What is one of the main functions of art?
A.To help people learn art. B.To act as a mirror reflecting social values.
C.To serve as a tool for our scientific research. D.To provide entertainment for all the teenagers.
29.What does the underlined phrase “cultural divide” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Those who have the advantages in cultures.
B.The artists improving global understanding.
C.The gap between people with different cultures.
D.The emotions and ideas conveyed beyond languages.
30.What impact can the creation of art have on other fields?
A.It can create job opportunities.
B.It can improve scientific progress.
C.It can lead to breakthroughs in various fields.
D.It can strengthen people’s awareness of cooperation.
31.What is a worry raised by critics about the role of art in society?
A.The appreciation of fine arts is disappearing.
B.The focus on technology costs too much money.
C.The role of art has always been stable and unchanging.
D.New technology and commercial interests may weaken the role of art.

For some people, music is no fun at all. About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the differences between two songs.
As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. In fact, most people cannot understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify (辨别) this unusual condition.
Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from those of people who can enjoy music. The difference is complex(复杂的), and it is not connected with poor hearing. Amusics can understand other non-musical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding common speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can ’t see certain colors.
Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her music problem. Now she knows that she is not alone. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say ’No, thanks. I ’m amusic, ’” says Margaret.
32.Amusics are the people who ______.
A.like music B.are born unable to enjoy music
C.don ’t like music D.have poor listening
33.Life is hard for amusics mainly because ______.
A.they know they cannot enjoy music
B.they hate parties, restaurants or shopping centers
C.they try to stay at the place full of music
D.they are not understood by others
34.What causes amusics to be different from most people according to scientists?
A.Their lack of colors. B.Their poor hearing.
C.Their brains. D.Their problems with speech.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Some people ’s inability to enjoy music.
B.Some people ’ s musical ability.
C.Amusics ’ strange behaviors.
D.Diagnosis and treatment of amusics.

No matter where you go, you’ll notice something strange about trees—the fact that their bottoms are painted white. Generally speaking, the purpose of whitewashing is to protect trees from heat and insects. 36 . Let’s check them out!
Blocking the sun
You might sometimes notice that some tree trunks’ surfaces get dry and crack easily. 37 . Simply put, they are exposed to the burning sun and the temperatures change wildly between day and night. Fortunately, painting a tree’s trunk white is similar to adding sunscreen, which helps block the sun.
Heat protection
38 .White paint reflects the heat and allows trees to spend more time on transpiration (蒸腾) and growing their fruits. Additionally, when trees are cooler, they have less stress, which makes their stomata (气孔) stay open a bit longer for the exchange of gases.
Defending against pests
More often than not, a tree’s surface will crack, allowing insects to creep inside. 39 . Therefore, people whitewash trees using latex paint and water, which prevents insects from climbing up trees and entering inside through the cracks.
40
Last but not least, the surface of trees is painted white to make them more visible, specifically for those on the side of the road. Why is that important? Because accidents involving trees are extremely common, especially during the night, when drivers can not see them much more clearly.
A.Stopping accidents
B.Improving visibility
C.Whitewashing is a good way to solve the problem
D.The cause of this phenomenon has already been found
E.Whitewashing helps young trees remain cool in spring
F.However, there’re many other reasons for whitewashing trees
G.Bacteria will feed on the tree’s inner parts, eventually killing it

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
12-year-old Dylan lived with his grandmother. His parents were successful lawyers in the city. This made their daily routine very busy. But Dylan’s grandmother Erica came to their rescue and offered to take care of him.
Dylan loved living with his grandmother. Every morning, his grandmother would make him a healthy breakfast. After a bath, they would go for a walk in the neighborhood. She would hum (哼) a tune, and Dylan would join her singing. After a musical morning, Dylan would be accompanied to wait for the school bus. Every night the grandmother would sing for Dylan until he fell asleep.
It was naturally that Dylan was musically gifted. He wanted to perform at his school’s annual party this year. But his parents wanted him to focus on his studies. They wished that Dylan became a successful lawyer, too. He was slightly disheartened at how his parents dismissed his love for music.
However, having finished the school assignments, he also stuck to playing with his favourite music. He always shared a beat he created with his grandmother.
“Dylan, I’m amazed at how passionately you make music. And the best thing is that you put your individuality into your music. If you really love music, keep on it. Don’t let anyone stop you.” Hearing what his grandmother said, Dylan was greatly inspired.
From that day on, Dylan’s passion for music burned brighter than ever before. He spent countless hours honing (训练) his skills, experimenting with different sounds, and exploring various genres. With his grandmother’s unwavering support and encouragement, Dylan felt like he could conquer the world with music.
One evening, as Dylan sat in his room, playing his guitar, he came up with a melody (旋律) that conveyed his deepest emotions. Gina is in charge of the computer lab and you should see her to reserve time on any of our computers. Daniel is the head of our reference department. He can be of assistance when you’re researching subjects or writing papers. The hours are on the paper you were given when you came in. But sometimes we’re open on special hours. For example, during family week when your parents are invited to visit the school, we’re open every evening. We like to think of the library as a place where people come for a place to study. If you like a lot of conversation, then the Student Center is the place for that.

2.细节理解题。根据Hoppers部分中的“The small room is always full, but it’s more than worth the wait.”(小房间总是满的,但是值得等待。)可知,Hoppers餐馆不大,但总是爆满,所以去Hoppers餐馆总是要排队。故选B。

27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“I hope you’ll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a role you are letting it play in your life.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.C 31.D

28.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Firstly, art acts as a mirror of society, catching the spirit of the times in which it is created. 29.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“It allows individuals from different linguistic backgrounds to connect on a deeper level, understanding and empathizing with the emotions and ideas conveyed through visual, hearing or performance mediums. This universality (普遍性) is one of the reasons why art has the power to bridge cultural divides and foster global understanding.(它允许来自不同语言背景的人在更深层次上联系起来,理解和同情通过视觉、听觉或表演媒介传达的情感和想法。这种普遍性是艺术有能力弥合cultural divides和促进全球理解的原因之一)”可知,它允许来自不同语言背景的人在更深层次上联系起来,所以艺术弥合不同文化背景的人之间的差距,所以cultural divide指的是不同文化背景的人之间的差距。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The process of creating art encourages the imagination and can lead to breakthroughs in various fields, from science to business. Moreover, the appreciation of art can inspire new ways of thinking and problem-solving.(创造艺术的过程激发想象力,并能在从科学到商业的各个领域取得突破。此外,艺术欣赏可以激发新的思维和解决问题的方式)”可知,艺术创作能够对其他领域产生影响,带来各种领域的突破。故选C。

G.Bacteria will feed on the tree’s inner parts, eventually killing it
【答案】36.F 37.D 38.E 39.G 40.B
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了树木粉刷成白色的原因。
36.根据上文“No matter where you go, you’ll notice something strange about trees—the fact that their bottoms are painted white. Generally speaking, the purpose of whitewashing is to protect trees from heat and insects.(无论你走到哪里,你都会注意到树的一些奇怪之处——它们的底部都被漆成了白色。一般来说,刷白的目的是保护树木免受高温和昆虫的侵害)”以及后文“Let’s check them out!(让我们来看看吧!)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出粉刷树木还有其它原因。故F选项“然而,粉刷树木还有很多其他原因”符合语境,故选F。
37.根据上文“You might sometimes notice that some tree trunks’ surfaces get dry and crack easily.(有时你可能会注意到一些树干的表面很干燥,很容易开裂)”以及后文“Simply put, they are exposed to the burning sun and the temperatures change wildly between day and night. Fortunately, painting a tree’s trunk white is similar to adding sunscreen, which helps block the sun.(简单地说,它们暴露在烈日下,昼夜之间的温度变化很大。幸运的是,把树干涂成白色就像涂防晒霜一样,有助于阻挡阳光)”可知,后文主要分析了树干开裂的原因。故D选项“这种现象的原因已经找到了”符合语境,故选D。
38.根据后文“White paint reflects the heat and allows trees to spend more time on transpiration (蒸腾) and growing their fruits. Additionally, when trees are cooler, they have less stress, which makes their stomata (气孔) stay open a bit longer for the exchange of gases.(白色的油漆可以反射热量,让树木有更多的时间蒸腾和生长果实。此外,当树木温度较低时,它们的压力较小,这使得它们的气孔保持开放的时间更长,以便进行气体交换)”可知,后文提到白色的油漆可以反射热量,让树木有更多的时间蒸腾和生长果实,即可以让树木保持凉爽。故E选项“刷白可以帮助小树在春天保持凉爽”符合语境,故选E。
39.根据上文“More often than not, a tree’s surface will crack, allowing insects to creep inside.(通常情况下,树的表面会裂开,让昆虫爬进去)”以及后文“Therefore, people whitewash trees using latex paint and water, which prevents insects from climbing up trees and entering inside through the cracks.(因此,人们用乳胶漆和水粉刷树木,防止昆虫爬上树,从裂缝进入内部)”可知,本句是在说明昆虫爬进去的后果:细菌会以树的内部为食,最终杀死树。故G选项“细菌会以树的内部为食,最终杀死树”符合语境,故选G。
40.根据本段内容“Last but not least, the surface of trees is painted white to make them more visible, specifically for those on the side of the road. Why is that important? Because accidents involving trees are extremely common, especially during the night, when drivers can not see them much more clearly.(最后但并非最不重要的是,树的表面被涂成白色,使它们更明显,特别是对那些在路边的人来说。为什么这很重要?因为涉及树木的交通事故非常常见,尤其是在夜间,因为司机看不清树木)”可知,本段的主旨是树木粉刷成白色可以提高司机的能见度。故B选项“提高能见度”符合语境,故选B。

【答案】参考范文:
The Pros and Cons of Using Scanning Translation Pens in Classrooms
In recent years, many students have been using scanning translation pens in classrooms, and this trend has generated mixed opinions.
On the one hand, scanning translation pens can greatly enhance learning. They allow students to quickly translate unfamiliar words and phrases, helping them understand the material better and improving their language skills. This technology also promotes independent learning, as students can explore new vocabulary at their own pace.
On the other hand, over-reliance on these devices may hinder students’ abilities to learn languages effectively. They risk becoming dependent on technology rather than developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
To balance the pros and cons, schools should encourage students to use scanning pens as a supplementary tool, while also emphasizing the importance of traditional language learning methods. This approach will help students gain a deeper understanding of the language.

It was a beautiful composition that intertwined happiness, sadness, and determination. Dylan knew that this was the perfect piece for him to perform at the school’s annual party.

With newfound confidence, Dylan approached his parents and shared his desire. He once again explained his love for music and conveyed his wish to showcase his musical talent at the school event. To convince them of his determination, Dylan even played the new music he created to them. To his surprise, his parents listened intently and exchanged a glance before speaking. “Dylan, we’ve realized that music means a lot to you. Your passion and dedication are evident. We want you to be happy and pursue your dreams.” Dylan’s heart was filled with joy as he heard his parents’ words of acceptance.
The day of the performance arrived. As Dylan stepped onto the stage, he glanced at his parents and his grandmother, who were beaming with pride. He knew that this was his moment to shine. With each play of his guitar and every word that flowed from his mouth, Dylan poured his heart into his performance. The audience was captivated by his soulful voice and the emotions he conveyed through music. Applause filled the air as he finished his performance. Tears welled up in Dylan’s eyes as he took a bow, feeling an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. He had not only proven himself to his parents but also to himself.
