These are the galleries you need to add to your must-visit list. Royal Academy of Arts (RA), London Not your standard gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts is led by artists to promote not just the appreciation of art, but its practice. It is world-famous for hosting some exhibitions that get everyone talking. Besides, what sets the RA apart is its engagement with the public through participatory experiences, allowing visitors to not only view art but become part of it in innovative ways. Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich Sitting on the edge of the University of East Anglia’s campus, the Sainsbury Centre holds a collection of remarkable works of art spanning over 2,000 years. Set in hundreds of acres of West Yorkshire parkland, you’ll see sculptures by some of the leading artists of the 20th century. Whitworth, Manchester After a sky-high £15 million development, the Whitworth is becoming one of the premier galleries in the north of England. B Climbers targeting peaks above 5,000 meters in the Xizang autonomous region, including the north side of Qomolangma, now have to apply for a permit, according to a rule issued by Chinese sports authorities. To make climbing safer, or at least less deadly, the General Administration of Sport and the sports bureau of Xizang released a notification (通知) requiring climbers to send an application to the bureau at least a month in advance of their planned climb. It said climbing without permits will be strictly forbidden. “In recent years, cases of injuries, missing people and deaths have been witnessed as a result of illegal climbing,” the notification said. “Climbing is a highly professional sport with high risk. Most illegal climbers lack professional skills, facilities and tour guides. Such activities will interfere with orderly climbing and bring risks, not only to the climbers themselves but also rescuers. They will also lead to a loss of personal or national property.” Applications will need to detail each individual climber’s personal information, proposed climbing routes and related plans. Climbers are also being asked to obey related rules to protect mountain environments. The notification also urged regional government departments to strengthen safety checks and the prohibition of illegal climbing, encourage residents to join regular patrols near major climbing routes and promote public education on climbing safety. In a previous interview with China Daily, Kul Bahadur Gurung, general secretary of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said difficult weather conditions, lack of experience and support personnel, and the commercialization (商业化) of expeditions were the main reasons for the high death toll on the world’s highest peak. “Since the number of people reaching the summit of Everest is increasing, everyone thinks it is easier to climb and everyone can climb, which is a totally false idea,” he said. 4. Why is a permit needed for Qomolangma climbers? A. To stop illegal climbing. B. To provide training ahead. C. To limit the number of climbers. D. To collect climbers’ information. 5. Which word can best replace the underlined “interfere with” in Paragraph 3? A. Test. B. Change. C. Replace. D. Disturb. 6. What does Paragraph 4 focus on about the notification? A. Its content. B. Its purpose. C. Its background. D. Its impact. 7. What does Kul Bahadur Gurung think of the Everest climbing? A. It’s a totally false idea. B. It should be eco-friendly. C. It’s highly professional. D. It should be non-profitable. C What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. It is that those records are being broken by such large margins (幅度). In Portland, Oregon, temperature reached 46.6℃(116°F) — making it one of several cities in the region where former records have been beaten by a full 5℃(9°F). At the same time, heatwaves are also hitting central Europe and even Siberia. Heatwaves may become headlines, but less attention is paid to them. In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings. It is a silent killer. As many as 70,000 people died due to a heatwave in Europe in 2003. Heat also kills by worsening health conditions such as heart problems, so not all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed (归因) to it. Climate change will make heatwaves more common and more extreme. Even if greenhouse-gas emissions (排放) are cut to zero by the middle of this century, temperatures will go on rising for decades. So other measures are needed to protect people against extreme heat. Governments can set up early warning systems to alarm health workers, shut down schools and stop outdoor activities. They can provide the public with forecasts of coming heatwaves, explanations of the dangers and detailed advice on what to do. Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can find shelter and sleep if necessary. The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects. 8. What shocks us most about the heatwave in the Pacific Northwest? A. It has stricken a usually mild area. B. It hits central Europe except Siberia. C. Many temperature records are being broken. D. Many records are being broken by large margins. 9. What can we learn from the report in the Lancer? A. People have paid much attention to heatwaves. B. Heat doesn’t cause widespread damage to belongings. C. The damage of heat is as obvious as storms and floods. D. About 300,000 middle-aged people died from extreme heat. 10. What can governments do to protect people against heatwaves? A. Provide some cool places. B. Build nursing homes. C. Organize outdoor activities. D. Shelter the homeless. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Improving Public Facilities B. Taking Heatwaves Seriously C. Preventing Natural Disasters D. Reducing Greenhouse-gas Emission D Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer. This new information will help scientists protect the birds, which are endangered. The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. The birds were once common in eastern Australia, but that’s changed, as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. Zoos Victoria, the group behind the recent effort to locate Plains-wanderers, says the birds’ numbers have fallen by over 85% in recent decades. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1,000 of the birds left in the wild. Zoos Victoria says, “There is no bird like it in the world.” The odd little birds are only about six inches (15 centimeters) tall. They spend most of their time on the ground. When they feel threatened, they crouch down to hide and they normally choose to run away rather than fly. One thing that makes Plains-wanderers unusual is that the females are larger, and are in charge of protecting the territory. The male birds are smaller and take care of the eggs. To protect these rare birds, scientists first had to learn where they were. So Zoos Victoria worked with Queensland University of Technology on a plan to locate the birds. Since Plains-wanderers are hard to spot, the team chose to “listen” for the birds instead. Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Ooom” call, and this was the key to locating them. The researchers set up 35 special recording devices called “song meters” in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers could possibly have been. Song meters record all the sounds made in an area over a long period of time. The song meters collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings far more than humans could analyze. So the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify the calls of Plains-wanderers. Then the AI system will locate the birds and the new information it provides will help scientists protect the birds. 12. What has made the number of Plains-wanderers fall? A. Climate change. B. People’s hunting. C. The loss of their habitat. D. Environmental pollution. 13. What can we learn about Plains-wanderers? A. They are large in size. B. They’re not good at flying. C. They have excellent hearing. D. They mainly live on the water. 14. What’s the purpose of song meters? A. To collect Plains-wanderers’ sounds. B To analyze Plains-wanderers’ sounds. C. To promote Plains-wanderers’ growth. D. To observe Plains-wanderers’ activities. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. AI System Has Been Used to Feed Rare Birds B Plains-wanderers Are in the Face of Extinction C. Scientists Use AI to Track Down Endangered Birds D. “Song Meters” Help Scientists Research Rare Birds How to develop healthy relationships Friends are an important part of life. The last thing Solo did before entering the building was to lick his owner’s face. A few minutes later, Solo was shot and killed in the line of duty. I knew how sad that officer must have felt because my own dog, Kela, had recently died. The article went on to tell about a fundraiser (募捐活动) that was going on to help buy bulletproof vests (防弹背心) for the police dogs there. I thought every police dog should be protected just like the police. I may be a kid, but why can’t I do a fundraiser to help save the dogs in our area? Then 1 found out that a bulletproof vest for a police dog costs $475. My mom thought it was a lot of money for an eleven-year-old girl to raise, but she told me to go ahead and try anyway. We called our local Oceanside Police Department and learned that their dogs needed bulletproof vests. At that point, I realized that I needed a name for the fundraiser and thought since I was trying to protect just one dog’s life, I would call my program Vest A Dog. I decided that vet offices and pet stores would be really good places to go with donation boxes and Vest A Dog fliers (传单). I used little green take-out boxes, decorated with a picture of Tiko, the dog I chose to vest, and me. I wrote on each box “Help protect the life of a police dog by donating a dollar.” One afternoon, after all the boxes had been placed throughout our community, I got a call from a local newspaper reporter who had seen one of my fliers. The reporter decided to do an article about Vest A Dog. That ought to spread the word, I thought. I asked officer Jim Wall, who is Tiko’s partner, if they would have their picture taken with me for the article and they did. After the article came out, I eagerly checked to see if there were any donations. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ About three weeks later, I counted the money from all of the boxes. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 德阳市第五中学高2024级高一下学期期末模拟考试 英语试题 (试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟) 注意事项: 1. 1. Besides, what sets the RA apart is its engagement with the public through participatory experiences, allowing visitors to not only view art but become part of it in innovative ways.(它以举办一些让每个人都在谈论的展览而闻名于世。 故选A项。 根据Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Yorkshire部分中“Tearing up the rulebook when it comes to how we traditionally view art, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park strives to break down barriers by showing works from British and international artists in the open air.(当谈到我们传统上如何看待艺术时,约克郡雕塑公园打破了规则,通过在露天展示英国和国际艺术家的作品,努力打破障碍)”和Whitworth, Manchester部分中“Making full use of its picturesque park setting, the gallery has a beautiful art garden and a sculpture terrace (露台), all waiting to be explored.(画廊充分利用其风景如画的公园环境,拥有一个美丽的艺术花园和一个雕塑露台, 所有这些都有待探索)”可知,约克郡雕塑公园和惠特沃斯画廊的共同之处在于它们都提供户外环境。 通读全文,并根据第一段“With such a strong artistic heritage, it’s no surprise that England knocks it out of the park when it comes to world-class art galleries. These are the galleries you need to add to your must-visit list.(拥有如此强大的艺术遗产,英国在世界一流的艺术画廊中脱颖而出也就不足为奇了。 B Climbers targeting peaks above 5,000 meters in the Xizang autonomous region, including the north side of Qomolangma, now have to apply for a permit, according to a rule issued by Chinese sports authorities. A 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段中“To make climbing safer, or at least less deadly (让攀登更安全,或者至少不那么致命)”和第三段中“In recent years, cases of injuries, missing people and deaths have been witnessed as a result of illegal climbing (近年来,非法攀登造成了受伤、失踪和死亡的案件)”可知,非法攀登造成很多安全问题,珠穆朗玛峰登山者需要许可证是为了禁止非法攀登,确保安全。故选A项。 根据画线词所在句前一句“Most illegal climbers lack professional skills, facilities and tour guides. 和后一句“They will also lead to a loss of personal or national property. 根据第四段“Applications will need to detail each individual climber’s personal information, proposed climbing routes and related plans. Climbers are also being asked to obey related rules to protect mountain environments. The notification also urged regional government departments to strengthen safety checks and the prohibition of illegal climbing, encourage residents to join regular patrols near major climbing routes and promote public education on climbing safety. 故选A项。 根据最后一段中Kul Bahadur Gurung所说的话“Since the number of people reaching the summit of Everest is increasing, everyone thinks it is easier to climb and everyone can climb, which is a totally false idea (由于登上珠峰顶峰的人越来越多,大家都认为爬起来更容易,大家都能爬,这是一个完全错误的想法)”可知,他认为攀登珠峰顶峰很容易的想法是错误的。 C What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. Reducing Greenhouse-gas Emission 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. 由文第一段第一、二句“What is the most shocking about the heatwave affecting the Pacific Northwest is not that it has hit a usually mild area, nor that so many long-standing temperature records are being broken. It is that those records are being broken by such large margins 由文第二段第三句“In 2018 about 300,000 people over the age of 65 died as a result of extreme heat, mainly in India, a 54% increase since 2000, according to a report in the Lancet, a medical journal. The report also shows that, unlike storms and floods, heat does not lead to dramatic before-and-after pictures or widespread damage to belongings.”(根据医学杂志《柳叶刀》的一份报告,2018年,约有30万65岁以上的人死于极端高温,主要在印度,自2000年以来增加了54%。 由文第四段后部分“Improved facilities can also help. This includes providing shaded areas, water parks and “misting stations” to help people cool down, and get to airconditioned “cooling centers” where they can find shelter and sleep if necessary.”(改善设施也会有所帮助。 通读全文并结合末段末句“The world is, undoubtedly, facing a big health challenge right now. There is no excuse for ignoring heatwaves and their effects.”(毫无疑问,世界现在正面临着巨大的健康挑战。 D Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer. B. To analyze Plains-wanderers’ sounds. C. To promote Plains-wanderers’ growth. D. To observe Plains-wanderers’ activities. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. AI System Has Been Used to Feed Rare Birds B. Plains-wanderers Are in the Face of Extinction C. Scientists Use AI to Track Down Endangered Birds D. “Song Meters” Help Scientists Research Rare Birds 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. One day, I read a very sad story about a police dog named Solo that had been sent into a building to catch a suspect (嫌犯). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 After the article came out, I eagerly checked to see if there were any donations. Every day after school, I rushed to each location, hoping to find the boxes filled with contributions. To my delight, I started noticing more and more people stopping by the boxes, curious about Vest A Dog and willing to donate. Children were emptying their piggy banks, while adults were digging into their wallets for spare change or even writing checks. The community's response was overwhelming, and my heart swelled with gratitude. About three weeks later, I counted the money from all of the boxes. With trembling hands, I separated the bills and coins, triple-checking each count. The total amount astounded me – it was far beyond what I had ever imagined. We had managed to raise not just enough for one vest, but sufficient funds for multiple vests. I couldn't wait to share the news with Officer Jim Wall and Tiko. Their joy and appreciation upon hearing the update was priceless and I realized that no dream is too big, and even a young heart can make a significant impact. 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲向:rush to/hurry to ②注意到:notice/observe/spot ③筹集:raise/collect 情绪类 ①令人高兴的是:to one’s delight/to one’s joy ②使震惊:astound/astonish/shock 【点睛】【高分句型1】The total amount astounded me —— it was far beyond what I had ever imagined.(运用了what引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Their joy and appreciation upon hearing the update was priceless and I realized that no dream is too big, and even a young heart can make a significant impact.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
