The first results of a groundbreaking (开创性的) music project working with deaf children in Dundee will be announced (宣布) next week with the aim of rolling it out across Scotland in the future.
In a project developed through his ongoing partnership with the National Youth Choir (合唱团) of Scotland (NYCOS), musician and educator Paul Whittaker has been spending time since February with groups of deaf and hearing-impaired (听力受损的) children at three Dundee primary schools — Claypotts, Craigiebarns and Tayview — as well as with pupils from a handful of other schools in the area.
“What we wanted to do was find out whether deaf children can sing, and how well they can pick up pitch (高音),” said Mr Whittaker. “What we’re doing on Monday is presenting some of the work that we have been doing.”
What gives the project its strength is that Mr Whittaker has been deaf since birth. “Because I’m deaf myself, I don’t like to put any barriers in the way of deaf children,” he said. “What’s important as well is that the children realise I’m the same as them. I can say: ‘Look at me. I’ve got hearing aids (助听器). I can sign’. It plants the idea in a child that if he can do it, I can do it too.”
Given time and funding (资金) problems, the project hasn’t achieved everything it set out to achieve. “But what has been lovely has been seeing how all of the pupils, from being quite shy and quiet at the start of the project, has really grown up. Some of them can sing really well. They pick up things quite easily,” said Mr Whittaker.
To date, there has been little research done into the connection between deafness, singing and signing. Now, following a smaller pilot project carried out last year in the Highlands with participation from pupils at Stonehaven Academy, the hope is the project can show the benefits of such an approach. It may then be rolled out more widely across Scotland.
41 What makes the music project special?
A. It aims to train world-famous musicians.
B. It introduces new approaches to improve hearing.
C. It teams up with primary schools across Scotland.
D. It focuses on supporting students with hearing problems.
42. What part does Whittaker play in the project?
A. He is a health educator. B. He is a peacekeeper.
C. He is a role model. D. He is a caregiver.
43. In what way is Whittaker happy about the project?
A It has achieved all of its goals.
B. It enjoys plentiful funding support.
C. It has received international recognition.
D. It sees the students’ impressive learning abilities.
44. What is the expectation for the project in the future?
A. To cooperate with the government.
B. To make it available in more places of Scotland.
C. To seek for more funding for better development.
D. To figure out the connection between deafness and singing.
45. What is the text mainly about?
A. A pioneering project by a deaf musician.
B. A large project for unlocking musical talents.
C. A national project to teach music to children.
D. A unique project studying the impact of music.
C
As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it impacts the planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands like Beyond Meat and cultivated meat from Aleph Farms and others are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes, none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. Made from a special process called microbial fermentation (微生物发酵), milk is manufactured in a lab instead of in a cow. And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk.”The gene functions as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”
The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure (粪肥) and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms.
46 What distinguishes Remilk from other milk substitutes?
A. It enjoys broad popularity.
B. It has the highest output.
C. It comes in various flavours.
D. It tastes the same as cow’s milk.
47. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The production of Remilk.
B. The nutritional value of Remilk.
C. The role of gene in making protein.
D. The process of microbial fermentation.
48. What can we know from Wolff’s words in paragraph 3?
A. Remilk was set up for animal protection.
B. Dairy industries should be shut down.
C. Remilk aims to produce animal-free food.
D. Prices of cow’s milk are soaring these days.
49. What does the underlined word “foul” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Clean. B. Heat.
C. Pollute. D. Consume.
50 What can we infer from the passage?
A. Drawing on gene technology, Remilk has developed a variety of dairy products.
B. Conventional dairy industry is anything but eco-friendly.
C. The new technology adopted by Remilk transforms the gene of cows.
D. It’ll be some time before the public get accustomed to the milk substitutes.

第一节 阅读表达(共5 小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration for millions through her story of faith, determination and hope. And now her story has become a major movie which is entitled Soul Surfer.
Born into a family of surfers on February 8, 1990, on the island of Kauai Hawaii, Bethany began surfing at a young age. At the age of eight, Bethany entered her first surf competition---- winning both the short and long board divisions and sparking a love for surf competition within her spirit.
On October 31, 2003, at the age of 13. Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing just off the shore of Hawaii. Bethany said, “It came out of the blue. I had no warning at all; not even the slightest sign of danger on the horizon. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling along with them, relaxing on my board with my left arm dangling (悬摆) in the cool water. I remember thinking, ‘I hope the surf picks up soon...’”
“That's all it took: a split second. I felt a lot of pressure and a couple of lightning fast tugs(猛拽) .Then I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed calm. My left arm was gone along with a huge piece of my surfboard...”
Her friends had to get her to the beach which took 20 minutes of paddling. After losing more than 40 percent of her blood and making it through several surgeries, Bethany was well on her way to recovery due to an unbelievably positive attitude.
In January 2004, Bethany made her return to surf competition and with no intention of stopping, Bethany continued to enter and shine in competitions. Initially, she adopted a custom-made board that was longer and slightly thicker than standard and had a handle for her right arm, making it easier to paddle, and she learned to kick more to make up for the loss of her left arm.
Just over a year after the attack, she took first place---- winning her first National Title. Now she competes with the world's best and travels the globe.

To date there has been little research done into the connection between deafness, singing and signing. Now, following a smaller pilot project carried out last year in the Highlands with participation from pupils at Stonehaven Academy, the hope is the project can show the benefits of such an approach. It may then be rolled out more widely across Scotland.
41. What makes the music project special?
A. It has achieved all of its goals.

46. What distinguishes Remilk from other milk substitutes?
A. Clean. B. Heat.
C. Pollute. D. Consume.
50. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Drawing on gene technology, Remilk has developed a variety of dairy products.
B. Conventional dairy industry is anything but eco-friendly.
C. The new technology adopted by Remilk transforms the gene of cows.
D It’ll be some time before the public get accustomed to the milk substitutes.

And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”(牛奶是由一种叫做微生物发酵的特殊过程制成的,牛奶是在实验室而不是在奶牛体内生产的。
根据第三段中Wolff 所说的话“Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option.(Remilk成立的初衷是停止使用动物生产我们的食物,因为作为乳制品爱好者,我们意识到放弃牛奶不是一种选择。)”可知,Remilk旨在生产非动物性食品。故选C。
【49题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段划线单词所在句子“According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them.(据世界野生动物基金会称,奶牛向大气层中排放了大量的温室气体,造成了全球变暖和气候变化,并foul它们周围的空气。)”可知,奶牛向大气层中排放了大量的温室气体,这会污染周围的空气,由此可推知,划线单词foul意为“污染”,与C项“Pollute(污染)”同义,故选C。
【50题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore(乳制品行业对我们的地球、我们的健康和我们的动物都是破坏性的,而且不再是可持续的了)”和最后一段中“According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure(粪肥)and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. (奶牛养殖的环境代价太高了。据世界野生动物基金会称,奶牛给大气层增加了大量的温室气体,造成了全球变暖和气候变化,并污染了它们周围的空气。奶牛场消耗了大量的水,而这些农场排出的粪肥和肥料流入了当地的水道。)”可推知,传统的乳制品行业一点都不环保。故选B。

Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration for millions through her story of faith, determination and hope. And now her story has become a major movie which is entitled Soul Surfer.
Born into a family of surfers on February 8 1990, on the island of Kauai Hawaii, Bethany began surfing at a young age.
