Dear Susan,
You asked me about what happened after my family moved to this new city. Well, here is one story I want to tell you.
One day, my parents took me to a story telling show. As the story tellers spoke, their stories really excited me. Suddenly, I had an idea——“I want to be a story teller too!” But I was very afraid of speaking in front of people. I didn't want to lose face. However, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
A few months later, there was a story telling workshop. I joined it. I also signed up (报名) to tell a story in front of people soon after, so I had to do it before I wanted to stop. I just had to face my fears (恐惧). The first time I went on stage, I was so nervous. My hands were cold, and my heart jumped quickly. But once I started telling the story, I cooled down slowly. When I finished, everyone cheered loudly for me. I felt so happy.
From then on, I practiced telling stories more, sometimes on stage, sometimes at home. A few months later, my story telling got much better. Strangers even told me they enjoyed my stories. I wasn't afraid to talk to new people. My parents were also proud of me.
All of my changes happened because I listened to my heart and faced my fears. I really hope that one day you could come here to watch my show. You would totally be surprised!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Shirley

The blue whale (鲸) is the largest animal in the world. Most grow 80 feet (25 meters). Some reach 100 feet (30 meters). That’s as long as three school buses. Adult blue whales can weigh over 150 tons (吨). That’s as much as 30 African elephants. And a blue whale’s heart is the size of a small car! Some blue whales stay in the same place all year round. However, most travel fur to colder waters to find food and to warmer waters to have babies. Some travel alone. Others travel in pairs or small groups. They often use calls and songs to communicate with other blue whales hundreds of miles away. Since these whales are so large, you might think they have a lot of teeth. However, blue whales have no teeth!
The blue whale brings water into its mouth and it swallows (吞) small shrimp (虾). Adult blue whales cat up to 8,000 pounds of shrimp every day. A newborn (新生) blue whale is also very large. It is over 20 feet long and weighs 5,000 to 6,000 pounds.
Like many animals, blue whales are now endangered (濒危的). There were 350,000 blue whales swimming in the sea many years ago. Today, there are only 10,000 to 25,000. Now people stop hunting (猎取) blue whales in most places. However, blue whales still face dangers. Millions of tons of plastic (塑料) bags come into the sea every year. Whales, seabirds, and fish swallow them. It is dangerous for these animals. So it is time to do something for the blue whale and other sea animals.

Now, programs for kids to read to dogs are popular around the world to help improve their reading. Does the idea really work? Would students get the same benefits by reading to an adult, or to a teddy bear?
In 2014, a group of scientists in South Africa decided to find it out. Their experiment (实验) looked at a hundred third graders. The students were divided into four groups. One group read to the dog. A second group read to a teddy bear. A third group read to an adult. And the fourth group followed normal school activities, with no extra reading time. The students were tested on reading skills before the program began. They were tested again after ten weeks.
The results are amazing——the dog group won! Students in the dog group understood what they were reading better than students in the other groups. When the students were tested eight weeks after the study ended, the students in the dog group were still the winners.
Why did the students who read to dogs do best? Understanding that starts with the brain. A part of the brain is called Broca’s area. Scientists believe the size of this part is important for reading and it’s greatly affected (影响) by things like stress. And a comfortable environment is exactly what reading to dogs provides. When kids read to dogs, their stress levels usually go down.
Stress levels affect the learning and memory areas of the brain. There is a chemical marker (化学标记物) of stress named cortisol in our bodies, and studies show that petting dogs reduces cortisol levels. Petting dogs also typically increases (提升) a feel-good chemical called oxytocin. So adding a friendly dog to reading practice acts as a shield against the effects of stress.
Robriq, a student from Colorado, reads to a dog named Nella each week. “It is unusual to catch me reading a book, and I usually only read the first few pages. But I like it when I read to Nella. I like the company, and she really enjoys being read to.” Robriq says that his idea about reading has changed since starting the program. “It has encouraged me to read.”
30.Paragraph 2 is mainly about ________.
A.what scientists found out B.who joined in the experiment
C.why the students were grouped D.how scientists did the experiment
31.The underlined word “shield” in Paragraph 5 probably means something ________.
A.to mark the danger B.to keep people safe
C.to show disagreement D.to make things clearer
32.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Nella helps Robriq become a top student.
B.The winner of the third test was the adult group.
C.Reading to dogs may affect the size of Broca’s area.
D.We feel happier when cortisol levels keep going up.
33.Which is the best title for the passage?
A.What affects kids’ reading skills? B.Could dogs help kids with reading?
C.How much could pets change a kid? D.Are reading clubs with dogs popular?

四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分)
More music, please!
Albert Einstein, a famous scientist in the early 1900s, loved to play the violin. Einstein often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. He believed that playing the violin helped him find answers. He thought there was more to music than just being something fun to listen to. And many scientists today agree with Einstein. They find that music has a power that’s not just for making us feel happy.
Some scientists think that playing music can help your brain (大脑) work better. When you play an instrument, you are giving your brain a workout. For example, guitar players have to do many things at once when playing music. They use their eyes to read the music, their fingers to pick at the strings, and their ears to listen to the notes that they are playing. Different parts of their bodies are working together. This helps their brains get stronger and can help them pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.
You don’t have to play an instrument to feel good. Just listening to music can also make you happy. If you’re having a bad day, music can make you feel better. When you listen to your favorite music, your brain lets out something that makes you feel good. Listening to light music can also be relaxing. A soft song can help you relax when you are unhappy. For example, many people sing quiet songs to babies, because it can help them stop crying and sleep well.
Studies also show that people feel less pain (痛苦) when they are listening to music they enjoy. When people start listening to music, they pay less attention to other things. Because people are not thinking so much about the pain, they do not feel it as strongly. People have found that the more you like the music you’re hearing, the less pain you feel!
34.When did Einstein often play his violin?
35.Why can playing music help your brain work better?
36.What do people do to help babies stop crying and sleep well?
37.When do you listen to music? Why?

30.段落大意题。由文中“One group read to the dog.A second group read to a teddy bear.A third group read to an adult. And the fourth group followed normal school activities, with no extra reading time.”可知这一段主要是关于科学家是如何做实验的。故选D。
31.词义猜测题。由文中“Petting dogs also typically increases (提升) a feel-good chemical called oxytocin. So adding a friendly dog to reading practice acts as a shield against the effects of stress.”可知,抚摸狗狗通常还会增加一种让人感觉良好的化学物质——催产素。因此,在阅读练习中加入一只友好的狗狗,可以充当抵御压力影响的保护物。故选B。
32.推理判断题。由文中“A part of the brain is called Broca’s area. Scientists believe the size of this part is important for reading and it’s greatly affected ( 影响) by things like stress. And a comfortable environment is exactly what reading to dogs provides. When kids read to dogs, their stress levels usually go down.”可推断,布洛卡区和的大小与压力大小相关,当孩子们给狗读书的时候,压力水平会下降,布洛卡区会变大。故选C。
33.标题归纳题。由文章开头“Now, programs for kids to read to dogs are popular around the world to help improve their reading.”并结合全文可知这篇短文主要讲述全球流行的儿童给狗读书的项目,旨在帮助提高他们的阅读能力。故选B。

Why?
【答案】34.He often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. 35.Because playing music helps our brains get stronger and can help us pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily. 36.They sing quiet songs to babies. 37.I often listen to music while doing housework because it makes me feel relaxed.
