There are two parts in Monet’s Garden: a flower garden called Clos Normand in front of the house and a Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road.
The Clos Normand: When Monet and his family settled in Giverny in 1883, the piece of land stretching down from the house to the road was an orchard (果园) enclosed by high stone walls. Monet turned it into a garden full of flowers of different colors.
The water garden: In 1893, Monet bought a neighbouring piece of land on the other side of the railway. He had the first small pond dug; later on the pond was enlarged to its present-day size. In this water garden, you will find the famous Japanese bridge covered with wisteria (紫藤).
500,000 visitors discover Monet’s Garden each year during the seven months that it is open. Taking pictures is permitted in the garden, but only from the walkways. Picnics are forbidden. Dogs and other pets are not admitted.

If I had been asked a few years ago how I felt about exercise, I would have said that while I had a gym membership card, working out basically consisted of walking on the treadmill (跑步机) for fifteen minutes, pretending to know what I was doing with a few of the machines and weights for another fifteen minutes, and then making my escape.
This changed when life challenges forced me to seek exercise for stress relief. Recognizing my need for accountability, I joined a gym run by Adria, who became both my strict trainer and friend.
I anticipated that being my friend meant she’d let me relax if I just didn’t feel like attending a class, but that wasn’t the case — none of my excuses worked on her. If I didn’t show up, I would get a text asking, “What is your workout plan for this week?” She would not let me out of the commitment I made no matter how many times I tried. Before long, I noticed physical and emotional improvements in myself, and I began to look forward to going to the gym.
One day, Adria mentioned she was tired from managing her gym alone and needed a day off. I sympathized with her but was shocked when the next thing out of her mouth was “Anna, I wish you would get certified because you are the only one I’d trust with the keys”. I shook my head, knowing that was impossible. Me? A trainer?
However, I couldn’t get her words out of my head. Weeks later, I secretly signed up for a fitness instructor course. Each time complex content and self-doubt attempted to push me to give up, I would recall Adria’s texts — I chose to make a commitment and follow through.
When I eventually walked into Adria’s gym for my work as a trainer and saw my certification on the wall, Adria said, “I’m so proud of you.” “I should be proud of having a friend like you,” I responded.

7.What does the author probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Her friendship with Adria just started.
B.She would become Adria’s inspiration.
C.She would make a commitment to Adria.
D.Her achievement was credited to Adria.

Rising global carbon dioxide levels tied to global warming may not be as crucial in determining the composition of plant communities as other localized climate changes.
“Nobody really knows what the increases in carbon dioxide are going to entail in terms of future changes in vegetation types,” said Mark Brenner, a University of Florida assistant professor of paleolimnology, the study of ancient lakes. “It looks like climate changes in different areas may be more important than carbon dioxide, at least carbon dioxide by itself,” he said.
Brenner’s research team based their conclusions on an analysis of sediment (沉积物) from two lake bottoms, one in northern Mexico and one in northern Guatemala. The researchers used new techniques that allowed them to analyze only the remains of land plants, specifically their leaf waxes. By measuring the isotope composition of the leaf waxes, the researchers were able to distinguish two broad categories of plants living in these areas — so-called C3 and C4 plants, which have different photosynthetic (光合作用的) processes, the process by which green plants turn carbon dioxide and water into food using energy from sunlight. Many C4 plants are tropical grasses, while most tropical trees are C3 plants. The researchers analyzed sediments deposited over the last 27,000 years, from the last ice age to the current geological period. Over this period, there was a worldwide, relatively uniform increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.
Brenner said that if carbon dioxide played the major role in determining plant composition, one would assume that analysis of the sediments would reveal very similar changes in relative abundance of C3 and C4 plants in the two places over the study period. But, in fact, the researchers found that trends in the two types of plants were different at the two locations. The changes were related not with carbon dioxide levels, but with shifts in rainfall. “The result appears to be that climate factors, especially moisture availability, determine whether C4 or C3 plants dominate in an area, not carbon dioxide,” Brenner said.
Many scientists believe global warming will cause major variation in local climates worldwide, with some wet areas becoming dry and dry areas becoming wet. If that happens, it could have more impact on relative C3 versus C4 plant distribution than the rising carbon dioxide levels.
8.What can be inferred in the first paragraph?
A.Climate change affects plant community composition more than rising CO2 levels.
B.Localized climate shifts may not be as crucial as carbon dioxide.
C.Nobody knows which one is important.
D.Carbon dioxide levels is crucial to the global warming.
9.According to the third paragraph, which one is NOT true?
A.Tropical grasses are usually C4 plants.
B.C3 and C4 plants used to live in northern Mexico and Guatemala.
C.C3 and C4 plants don’t have the same processes.
D.Tropical trees are all C3 plants.
10.Why were trends in C3 and C4 plants different at the two locations?
A.The assumption that carbon dioxide played the major role is wrong.
B.The carbon dioxide played an important role.
C.The moisture availability was different.
D.The carbon dioxide level was different.
11.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Climates factors determine the plant distribution and composition of plant communities.
B.Global warming will cause major variation.
C.How has Brenner’s research team proved a truth.
D.C3 and C4 plants are important plants in determining the composition of plant communities.

Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life — including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton But experts worry that this attraction could put the endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues report January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly bolstered by plankton’s attraction to the platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.
12.Why do whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop?
A.To admire the man-made structures. B.To get food attracted by the platforms.
C.To attract other species of marine life. D.To attack ships stopping at the place.
13.What risk can whale sharks meet when approaching oil and gas platforms?
A.Colliding with ships. B.Missing their snacks.
C.Being hunted by people. D.Being disturbed by tourists.
14.What does the underlined word “bolstered” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Sheltered. B.Boosted. C.Rejected. D.Polluted.
15.What role do the researchers hope this finding will play?
A.Promote the economy of coastal cities. B.Improve the stability of the gas platforms.
C.Assist decision makers with structure planning. D.Help countries to upgrade energy structures.

We all have relationships. We have relatives, classmates, neighbors and probably some friends. 16 They are unsatisfying because they lack real strength, and they lack real strength because they lack real depth. I’d like to show you how to build stronger relationships and make your social life a lot more meaningful.
Meet more people.
You go out a lot, you meet a lot of new people and you keep widening your social circle. Thus, you’re much more likely to meet people you match up well with. 17
Talk about the things that matter to you.
18 If they believe and care about the same things, they’ll eagerly let you know. So you’ll find common ground and you’ll feel more connected.
19
Many people try to come off as perfect. However, by hiding your imperfections, what you do succeed in is appearing cold. Humans connect with other humans; not with ideals(完美的人). Keep this in mind. Don’t be afraid to let your weakness and your humanity show. This is what takes a relationship to the next level.
Be there for others.
Connections between people grow stronger, if they can depend on each other for support when it’s needed. 20 Your support will help them practically, and it will comfort them spiritually.
A.Be more confident.
B.Don’t care whether it means a few kind words or several great actions.
C.Tell people what you experienced and give others a chance to know what you care about and what you believe in.
D.But it’s hard for everyone to connect with you.
E.Express weakness.
F.These people can probably become your good friends, dependable partners, etc.
G.However, for a large percentage of us, many of these relationships are simply not satisfying.

固定搭配bury oneself in sth.
故填to。
故填which。
故填a。
