“ Have a dream. Don’ t be afraid to want something.” That’ s the advice from Florence Bergeron, associate director of the Students Commission of Canada. The group organized the country’ s yearly “ Take Our Kids to Work Day ” initiative(倡议)on November 1, 2023.
Across Canada, ninth grade students had the chance to visit the workplace of their parents, relatives or friends. The initiative began in 1994. “People brought their own children into the workplace so they could see what their parents were doing and prepare for taking on that same role,” Bergeron. explained. The intention of the day has changed over the years, as many kids now pursue careers(追求事业)different from their parents.
“ It’ s valuable for students to know about what people do in the adult workforce that they normally wouldn’ t see,” Bergeron said.“ They get to ask questions and decide what’ s interesting.”
Bergeron added that students also learn what they’ re not interested in doing, which is just as valuable. That was the case for three ninth graders from Ecole Salish Secondary, a school in Surrey. Mia Kim, Rithi Murugaselvam, and Eljie Salimbagat said that they enjoyed visiting their parents’ workplaces, but realized that they, themselves, would likely follow different paths. Rithi, who visited a daycare center where her mother works, said that “a lot of patience is required to work with kids, which often means less rest time ”.
All three students agreed that developing good communication skills is necessary, no matter what career path you follow. “I learned that you need to learn how to communicate with others to be successful,” said Mia.
Bergeron hopes that the event can make Canada’s ninth graders realize that their parents are not just someone who comes home and helps with homework and makes meals, they’ re also smart people in the world doing really cool things
4. What can we infer about the ninth grade students in 1994?
A. They would start working at a very young age.
B. They seldom paid attention to their parents’ work.
C. They were likely to do the same job as their parents.
D. They often helped their parents with their work.
5. Why does the author mention the three students?
A. To show the benefits of the initiative.
B. To show the popularity of the initiative.
C. To stress parents ‘ influence on their kids.
D. To share their advice on their parents’ jobs.
6. What effect does Bergeron expect the event to have on the students?
A. They will do better in their schoolwork.
B. They can decide on their career path more wisely.
C. They will get better communication skills.
D. They can show more respect for their parents.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. How parents play a role in their kids ‘ career choices in Canada.
B. Knowing what career to choose is also important to students.
C. Take Our Kids to Work Day helps ninth graders explore career choices.
D. How students in Canada do their career planning.

Airports are becoming more accessible for disabled people with wheelchair service. Now, one airline is going the extra mile to make airplanes more accessible too.
Delta recently showed a new seat prototype (雏形) at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, which will allow passengers that are wheelchair users to stay in their own chairs during the flight. The design, shown by Delta Flight Products (DFP), will allow for in-flight comfort and make it easier for the wheelchair users to get on the plane.
“This design offers new possibilities for customers with disabilities to enjoy a travel experience they truly should have,” DFP president Rick Salanitri said.
The new design includes a seat that can change between the wheelchair mode and a traditional airplane seat. The built-in seat folds (折叠) up so that a wheelchair can be safely fixed in place. The passengers seated in the chair’s wheelchair mode are able to use the tray table that is designed to rise up to the suitable height when the seat is changed. The seats would be fixed into the present plane seat track systems, so no structural changes would have to be made to airplanes.
Having wheelchairs onboard will also solve the issue of wheelchairs getting lost or broken by airlines. According to the 2023 Air Travel Consumer Report, more than 11,000 wheelchairs and scooters (踏板车), 1.5%of the total, were mishandled by US airlines.
DFP has already started discussions with the US Federal Aviation Administration and the UK Civil Aviation Authority with the goal of getting this seat on every airplane ; not just the Delta ones.
While airplanes are still not going to be completely accessible — the restrooms are too small to use a wheelchair in — solutions may be just around the corner. The new accessible airplane seat could be just the beginning of the age of inclusive (包含一切的) travel.
8. What might be DFP’s purpose of developing the new seat?
A. To attract more passengers to the airline.
B. To make airplane seats more comfortable.
C. To give passengers safer travel experience.
D. To improve wheelchair users’ flight experience.
9. What does the fourth paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The expectations for the new seat.
B. How the new seat works.
C. The functions of the new seat.
D. Which airlines offer the new seat.
10. What does the underlined word “mishandled” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Managed badly.
B. Examined carelessly.
C. Used too much.
D. Paid no attention to.
11. What does the author think of the new seat?
A. It is well received.
B. It will drive more changes.
C. It needs to be tested further.
D. It contributes much to airlines.
D
Few of us question the idea that we should’t eat or drink for at least two to six hours before any surgicl procedures (手术过程), but this may be changing.
The introduction of the fasting (禁食) rule actually dates back to mid-nineteenth century when early surgical traditions were established. In 1850, Dr John Snow recommended that patients should reduce the amount of breakfast or lunch from two to four hours before operations. This, he believed, would avoid the unpleasantness of vomiting (呕吐) on him which might lead him to do something wrong in the operation. While Snow wanted to limit the inconvenience of a patient throwing up on him, it was soon realized that such vomiting could be a threat to life.
In 1947, Curtis Mendelson, a New York doctor, published an article, which said that eating before surgery could make people stop breathing. Mendelson made many recommendations on fasting. It was only after Sir Joseph Lister, the famous British doctor, published a set of guidelines for fasting before surgery that people saw the difference being made between the consumption (吃喝) of food and clear fluids (液体). Lister’s guidelines remained in medical textbooks until the 1960s.
But over the last ten years, efforts to relax the fasting rule have become more common. Hospitals across the UK, the US, and many other countries have introduced rules that allow patients to continue to drink clear fluids—such as water, black tea, and fruit juices—until their operations.
One of the reasons is that a number of patients have been going without (没有……也行) water for dangerously long periods of time. As scheduled operations are put off for emergency procedures, some patients in a study were found to have gone between 6 and 10 hours without drinking.
“Recent research has also shown that the effect of the fasting rule is overvalued. Over half of people having emergency surgery have some food and drink in their stomachs, but this does not increase any danger. It seems the medical community is now starting to take notice of these changes, so the fasting rule may soon become a thing of the past,” Paul Jason, a doctor said.
12. Why did Dr John Snow make the fasting rule?
A. To avoid the threat to patients’ life.
B. To prevent doctors from making mistakes.
C. To reduce patients’ feeling of unpleasantness.
D. To make patients recover better after the operation.
13. What contributed most to the establishment of the fasting rule?
A. Scientific findings.
B. Patients’ requirements.
C. Support from professionals.
D. Huge risks during the surgery.
14. What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A To show breaking the fasting rule doesn’t affect any patients.
B. To present what kind of fluids can be drunk before surgery.
C To explain why many hospitals don’t follow the fasting rule now.
D. To tell us fluid consumption before surgery becomes less strict.
15. What does Paul Jason say about the fasting rule?
A. It is valuable.
B. It is outdated.
C. It is confusing.
D. It is dangerous.

Airports are becoming more accessible for disabled people with wheelchair service. Now one airline is going the extra mile to make airplanes more accessible too.
11 What does the author think of the new seat?
A. It is well received.
B. It will drive more changes.
C. It needs to be tested further.
D. It contributes much to airlines.

A. To show breaking the fasting rule doesn’t affect any patients.
B. To present what kind of fluids can be drunk before surgery.
C. To explain why many hospitals don’t follow the fasting rule now.
D. To tell us fluid consumption before surgery becomes less strict.
15. What does Paul Jason say about the fasting rule?
A. It is valuable.
B. It is outdated.
C. It is confusing.
D. It is dangerous.
