But I was never very fit. I just couldn’t do things in sports, like throwing a baseball. The ball would fall out of my hand onto the ground. In Grade 8, we got a new coach (教练) at our school. He took one look at me and said, “This school needs a basketball team, and you are going to be the star!” I laughed, and my friends laughed even more. “Amy doesn’t even know what a basketball is!” joked one of my friends. The new coach said, “Don’t worry. I’ll show you what she can do.” Every day after school, I worked with the new coach. He told me that because I was so tall, my job would be to play centre. A centre is a player who stands under the net and puts rebounds (篮板球) into the net. Centres are always the tallest on the team. I did push-ups and sit-ups. Most of all, I practised shooting (投篮). When I first started, I got zero of ten shots I took. But after a few weeks, I had about five of ten shots landing in the basket. I still wasn’t very good. But I was so tall that if someone took a shot I was usually the first one to reach the ball after it came down from the net. I became pretty good at putting the ball into the net. The season came and went. We didn’t do very well, but I learned something about myself that season. I’m in Grade 9 now and not good enough yet to make it to the high school team. But I think I will be next year. It’s exciting to find something about yourself and to realize (意识到) that you are what you make of yourself. 24. C Recently, some people have problems about the purposefully addictive (上瘾的) designs of smartphones and social media, which make it hard for anyone to put them down, especially teens. Now, a new report in Emotion gives facts to back up what these people said. According to the report, young people’s life enjoyment and happiness have been down since 2012, the year the number of teens having smartphones started improving very fast. The report also finds that teens’ psychological (心理的) health gets worse the more hours a week they spend on screens. Jean Twenge is the lead writer of the report. She mentioned the connection between happiness and screen activities, such as social media, texting, gaming, and video chats. She also mentioned the connection between happiness and non-screen activities, including sports, reading, and face-to-face communications. She called the relationship between screen and non-screen activities “zero sum”—if you are doing one, it takes time away from the others. Diane Tanman believes that her sons are like that. They are 11 and 15. They used to play games in fields, and it made them happier. These days, her sons get lost in online games. Many of the games have rewards (奖励) to keep players coming back. “It’s just junk food for the brain,” Tanman said. Ed Lazzara says his 12-year-old son Leo is a fan of video games. After playing a lot Leo gets more upset and uncomfortable. He wants his son to play fewer video games. However, completely staying away from electronic devices (设备) doesn’t lead to happiness, either. Twenge and her co-writers found that the happiest teens used electronic devices a little less than an hour daily. After a daily hour of screen time, unhappiness rises because of the improving screen time. Spending time in front of a screen is a common part of being a teenager. Many schools ask students to be online and to use iPads or other devices to do their work. But teachers and parents have also complained that technology (科技) can get in the way of learning when teens use their devices for fun things instead of their studies. If we discover how screen time affects young minds, we can help teens use technology better and protect their psychological health. Screen time is like ice cream. Sure, we can have some once in a while, but it shouldn’t be part of our everyday lives. 27. What can we learn from the passage? A. Screen time at home is not as good as screen time at school. B. Nearly an hour of screen time every day makes teens happiest. C. Technology should be encouraged in classroom learning. D. What teens do on the screen affects their happiness. 28. Why does the passage mention the examples of families with teens? A. To prove the bad effect of the addictive designs of electronic devices. B. To show parents have little control over their teens’ screen time. C To compare different-aged teens’ feelings about screen use. D To explain why electronic devices make teens feel happy. 29. What does the phrase “get in the way” probably mean in the passage? A. Worrying about something B. Stopping something from happening C. Discovering something new D. Encouraging something better 30. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Use of Electronic Devices: Should We Consider Teens’ Needs? B. Teens’ Psychological Health: Why Is It Important? C. Screen Time and Teens’ Study Performance D. Screen Time and Teens’ Life Happiness 四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(每题2分,共8分) Charlie Condell, an 18-year-old boy, has finished a bike trip around the world in just 318 days. I could hear my classmates cheering for me all the time. It gave me a lot of strength. During the race, I felt tired, but I didn’t give up. I kept running hard. Finally, I crossed the finish line. Also, I deeply felt the power of teamwork. The cheers from my classmates made me more confident and energetic. It was really an unforgettable and meaningful activity. 例文二 My Favourite School Activity My favorite school activity is the basketball-shooting competition. Our school held this exciting activity last term, and I actively took part in it. There were two teams in the competition. The rule was that the team that shot more baskets would win. I not only practiced shooting hard myself but also taught my teammates some shooting skills. During the competition, we cheered for each other loudly. It was an extremely thrilling moment. Finally, our team won first place in the grade and second place in the school. We were all overjoyed. Through this activity, I truly understood the importance of teamwork. I also learned that happiness comes from helping others and working together towards a common goal. It was an unforgettable and rewarding experience. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
