A pair of best friends from Texas are proving that adventure doesn’t have an age limit — even when you’re 81.
Ellie Hamby, a photographer, and Sandy Hazelip, a physician, toured the world in 80 days, adventuring from the beaches of Bali to the deserts of Egypt.
Their first stop was Antarctica. “The beauty of the Antarctic is just unbelievable,” Hamby recalled. Since then, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents.
And despite the challenges international travel presents, the best friends say they finished their trip without any arguments.
“We’re both independent, very stubborn. But we seem to allow each other to give space,” said Hamby. “We just understand each other and we know this is a good thing we’re doing and we kind of respect each other’s feelings.”
For Hamby, the most interesting aspect of the trip was the people they met along the way.
“We love all the sights that we saw, but the things that we remember the most are the people that we met,” she said. “We met some of the most wonderful, kindest, friendliest people in the world. We just have friends now all over the world that we love dearly.”
And they shared an important piece of advice for any travelers worried about the language barrier on their own adventures.
“You know, people ask us often about the language, how we manage it,” said Hamby. “We say with Sandy and Ellie, there’s one language and that’s a smile. And we found that worked wonders because we were often aware that there was not English spoken. But a smile covers all languages.”
24. Why did they finish the trip without arguments?
A. They had different personalities.
B. They prepared presents for each other.
C. They understood and respected each other.
D. They allowed each other to voice their ideas.
25. What part of the trip impressed Hamby most?
A. The beautiful sights. B. The wonderful people.
C. The interesting activities. D. The cultural experiences.
26. What did Hamby suggest travelers do with the language barrier?
A. Rely on the smile. B. Be more adventurous.
C. Hear English spoken more. D. Learn more languages.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Language Struggles: Testing Friendship
B. Travel Troubles: Friendship Tested Abroad
C. Talking Struggles: Adventures Lost in Translation
D. Limitless Adventure: Two Friends Break Age Barriers
C 25. B 26. A 27. D

Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty and a representative of the High Tang culture, a combination of realistic Northern culture represented by Confucian philosophy and romantic Southern culture represented by Taoist philosophy. But he could neither realize his Confucian ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism, so he could only chant (反复唱) poetry and drink wine to drown his sorrows as described by Du Fu in Eight Immortal Drinkers.
Here we see the tragedy of a genius staying lonely on earth like an angel falling from Heaven. His try is marked by male greatness in The Waterfall in Mount Lu Viewed from Afar, in which we see the mountain cloud from down below and the Silver River, which the Chinese name the Milky Way, fall from high, and heaven and earth seem to merge into one, which is the Chinese way of communion with nature. In his poetry, we can find his love of nature, of freedom, of the people, of his friends, in short, of the truth, good and beauty.
Li Bai is best known for the extraordinary imagination and striking Taoist imagery in his poetry, as well as for his great love for liquor (烈酒). Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, though in his case it was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him to. He is said to have drowned in the Yangtze River, having fallen from his boat while drunkenly trying to embrace the reflection of the moon.
28. Which of the statements is true about Li Bai according to the passage?
A. He is a representative of the combination of realistic and romantic culture.
B. He put his ability to good use in serving his country at that time.
C. He drank wine and chanted poetry to achieve his life goal.
D. He made the poems in which complaints and dissatisfaction could be shown.
29. What did Li Bai mainly describe in his poetry?
A. The relationship between different classes. B. Criticism of social realism.
C. Beautiful nature and feelings. D. Cruelty of the officialdom.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Li Bai liked drinking wine more than anything else.
B. Li Bai as well as Du Fu spent much time travelling.
C. Li Bai had a more extraordinary imagination than Du Fu.
D. Li Bai had to travel because he was very poor.
31. In which column of the newspaper can the passage appear?
A. Literature. B. Health. C. Sports. D. Prose.
A 29. C 30. B 31. A

根据最后一段“Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, though in his case it was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him to.(就像杜甫那样,他一生中大部分时间都在四处游历,不过对于他而言,这是因为他富有所以能够游历,而非因为贫困迫使他这样做)”可知,李白和杜甫一样花了很多时间在旅行上。
根据第一段“Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty and a representative of the High Tang culture, a combination of realistic Northern culture represented by Confucian philosophy and romantic Southern culture represented by Taoist philosophy.(李白被视为唐朝最伟大的浪漫主义诗人,也是盛唐文化(融合了以儒家思想为代表的北方现实文化与以道家思想为代表的南方浪漫文化的产物)的代表人物)”以及文章主要介绍了唐代伟大的浪漫主义诗人李白的诗歌和生平,所以推测出这篇文章可能会出现在报纸的“文学”专栏。故选 A。
D
If students have poor academic results early in school, do they continue to fall further and further behind as they move through their education? If achievement gaps do widen as children develop, this would be evidence for what researchers call the Matthew effect.
But is this phenomenon universally true? Not necessarily. We matched NAPLAN reading comprehension and numeracy (计算能力) results for 154,942 Australian students from Year 3 to Year 9. We examined these two skills as they form the basis of learning in many other areas of the curriculum (课程). We have a unique advantage in Australia, because our national NAPLAN tests are designed to track students’ progress over time. So results of one test can be directly compared to those of the next or the previous one. This is rare internationally.
Against all expectations, we found that most students starting with below-average NAPLAN results are making more progress from Year 3 to Year 9 compared with students starting above average. Given the widespread beliefs about widening gaps, our results should be comforting. Besides, there is a popular view that teachers aren’t effectively teaching students basic skills. But our research suggests students who begin with poorer reading and numeracy skills are supported by classroom teachers, and do make progress over time.
Meanwhile, our results also suggest students who begin with high achievement in Year 3 aren’t making the amount of progress in Year 9. Maybe it’s difficult for teachers to carry out government policies and make use of resources for teaching high-ability students if the majority of classroom time is focused on struggling students. Or perhaps the progress of high-ability students isn’t a high priority (优先考虑的事项) for schools once these students have attained the basic skills expected of their age group.
Further research is needed, and ongoing efforts to identify and support the small group of students who still fall behind are very important. Nevertheless, our finding that struggling students can make good progress over time rather than falling further behind should be a cause for optimism among educators and communities.
32. Why did the researchers choose to focus on reading and numeracy skills?
A. They are indicators of overall academic development.
B. They allow for easy before-and-after comparisons.
C. They can be directly measured by NAPLAN tests.
D. They are globally recognized as useful skills.
33. What do the research results suggest?
A. Average students are more popular with teachers.
B. Most struggling students have improved a lot.
C. Teachers fail to teach students basic skills.
D. The achievement gaps are widening.
34. What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A. The difficulties in teaching high-ability students.
B. The expected basic skills of different age groups.
C. The unreasonable arrangement of education resources.
D. The reasons for high-ability students’ underachievement.
35. How would educators and communities feel about the research finding?
A. Worried. B. Confused.
C. Encouraged. D. Disappointed.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“We examined these two skills as they form the basis of learning in many other areas of the curriculum (课程).(我们研究了这两种技能,因为它们构成了课程中许多其他领域学习的基础。)”
根据第三段“Against all expectations, we found that most students starting with below-average NAPLAN results are making more progress from Year 3 to Year 9 compared with students starting above average.(出乎意料的是,我们发现大多数NAPLAN成绩低于平均水平的学生在三年级到九年级的进步比平均成绩高于平均水平的学生要大。)”
根据第四段“Meanwhile, our results also suggest students who begin with high achievement in Year 3 aren’t making the amount of progress in Year 9. Maybe it’s difficult for teachers to carry out government policies and make use of resources for teaching high-ability students if the majority of classroom time is focused on struggling students. Or perhaps the progress of high-ability students isn’t a high priority ( 优先考虑的事项) for schools once these students have attained the basic skills expected of their age group.(同时,我们的研究结果还表明,那些在三年级时成绩优异的学生,到九年级时所取得的进步并不理想。这可能是因为如果教师将大部分课堂时间都用于关注学习困难的学生,那么他们就很难落实政府政策,也难以利用资源来开展针对高能力学生的教学工作。又或者,一旦这些高能力学生掌握了其年龄群体应具备的基本技能,学校就不再将他们的进步视为首要任务。)”可知,本段主要解释了能力高的学生没有取得应有进步的可能原因,故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Nevertheless, our finding that struggling students can make good progress over time rather than falling further behind should be a cause for optimism among educators and communities.(然而,我们的研究发现,随着时间的推移,学习困难的学生可以取得很好的进步,而不是进一步落后,这应该是教育工作者和社区乐观的原因。)”

58. carries
59. showing
60. however
61. to avoid
62. which 63. a
64. Suddenly
65. seen
故填Whether。
aim to do sth. 故填to avoid。
故填which。
故填a。

The Students’ Union
Dear fellow students,
Nowadays, the environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious and global warming causes frequent extreme weather. Therefore, I’d like to appeal to all of us to take an active part in protecting the environment.
Everyone can contribute to a better environment and we students can also do our part. It is necessary that we participate in voluntary work such as planting trees and picking up rubbish. Additionally, it is strongly suggested that we should live a low carbon life. For example, it makes sense to turn off the taps, the lights and other electrical appliances when we are not using them. Furthermore, we should attach great importance to garbage sorting and recycling in our daily life, through which we can reduce pollution and conserve natural resources.
Every effort counts. Let’s join hands to make our planet a greener one!

Billy was a six-year-old boy. He was very excited but was a little nervous about his first camping trip with his parents.
“What if the tent falls over and kills us? What if the wind blows the tent away? What if a wolf comes into the tent and eats us? ... ,” he kept asking his father silly questions.
“Perhaps, you have read too many stories with big bad wolves,” his father replied, laughing. “There aren’t any wolves in the city or even in the whole country, except in zoos.”
“Well, what if one escaped from a zoo?” Billy insisted.
“Zoos were careful enough not to let their animals escape.” his father comforted Billy.
Billy soon forgot about wolves as they started preparing for the camping trip. Billy helped his father load up the car. They put in the tent, a big one for the whole family. Then the sleeping bags, blankets and more. When everything was packed, his father started the car. Soon they were leaving the city behind them.
“Look at the cows!” shouted his mother excitedly when they were arriving at the campsite, which belonged to a farm and was in a big field. “They are eating the grass!”
Once the tent was set up, Billy went to explore. There were trees to climb and a stream for catching insects and fish. The day flew by and it was getting dark.
As they got inside the tent and were ready for sleep, strange noises kept coming from the distance.
“What’s that noise? Is it a wolf approaching?” Billy asked his mother and moved closer to her.
“Maybe it’s just the wind.” said his mother, who patted Billy sleepily.
Billy didn’t say anything and made himself into his sleeping bag. After a long day outdoors, his father and mother were very tired and fell asleep soon.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
But Billy was too nervous to sleep.

Carefully, Billy opened the tent’s door and went outside, listening for the source of the mysterious noises.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But Billy was too nervous to sleep. The strange noises in the distance kept his mind racing with wild imaginations. He couldn’t shake off the fear of a possible wolf lurking in the darkness. As his parents peacefully slept, he decided to take matters into his own hands and find out the source of those mysterious sounds.
Carefully, Billy opened the tent’s door and went outside, listening for the source of the mysterious noises. He discovered a group of hooting owls perched on nearby trees, realizing they were the harmless creators of the eerie sounds. As he watched in awe, the beauty of nature calmed his anxious heart. Returning to the tent, Billy felt confident and peaceful, snuggling back into his sleeping bag. The next day, filled with excitement, he enjoyed a hike with his family, learning about different animals and plants. This camping trip was a memorable adventure that he cherished.

B. Travel Troubles: Friendship Tested Abroad
C. Talking Struggles: Adventures Lost in Translation
D. Limitless Adventure: Two Friends Break Age Barriers
C
A. Literature. B. Health. C. Sports. D. Prose.
