It’s been a “long” journey for him, even though the high school senior skipped (跳过) 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th and 11th grades — completing his 4th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades while passing the New York State Regents examinations to graduate. Rebecca Gottesman has been in education for the last 25 years and called Suborno, whom she first met as a then fourth grader, “a genius (天才)”. The school district and the Bari family let Suborno take higher-level classes but still fit in with his peers (同龄人) and develop socially and emotionally. “We allow him to take high-school-level courses but take them at our middle school. So he would come into our middle school as an eighth-grader and take classes and then after he took his morning classes, he would take a bus to our elementary school where he would join his fifth-grade peers and attend fifth-grade electives (选修课程) and extra-curricular activities,” Gottesman explained. Even though Suborno moved through grades faster and divided his time between two schools, teachers and fellow students embraced him and gave him space to pursue his interests. He appreciated his Malverne High School experience and said teachers there treated him like any other high school student. “He’s been constantly seeking to learn,” Gottesman said. The 12-year-old has already got his ambitious sights set on beginning a doctoral program and becoming a professor. Suborno is heading to New York University on a scholarship to study for a bachelor’s degree in math and physics. “Many people are doing it only because their parents said so or to make the most profit, not because they actually love what they’re doing. So I hope to fix that and help other people understand math and science and love it in all its beauty,” Suborno said. 4. How did Suborno’s family treat him? A. They regarded Suborno to be a genius. B. They wanted him to be fully developed. C. They gave Suborno many extra money. D. They thought he should graduate earlier. 5. How does Suborno keep up with his peers? A. By attending courses and activities with peers after morning class. B. By going to school and leaving school by bus with peers. C. By voluntarily helping others’ lives without any reward. D. By explaining the difficult puzzles to his classmates. 6. What is Suborno’s attitude towards his high school? A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Grateful. 7. What motivates Suborno to study hard all the time? A. He wants to make his parents happy. B. He has the ability of self-discipline. C. He has a thirst for knowledge. D. He is eager to create miracles. C Every Saturday, at a church in Gothenburg, Sweden, hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds gather. They speak more than 20 languages. As they prepare their instruments, a smiling man walks in. He greets everyone, steps onto the stage, and raises his baton (指挥棒). Music fills the room. This is a music group called the Hope Orchestra, organized by John Smith. Since 2016, his free program has given homeless people from other countries, young people in need, and native Swedes the chance to learn an instrument, connect with others, and enrich their lives. Smith grew up in a poor family in Venezuela. To help his family make ends meet, he started selling ice cream when he was in primary school. Across the street was a program called Music for All, which provides free classical music training to children who have no chance to learn it. At 10, Smith joined the group. “I fell in love with music from my first class,” he said. “For me, playing the violin is like feeling electricity.” He also appreciated the group’s inclusive (包容的) philosophy. “It didn’t matter whether I was the boy selling ice cream in front of the school or the son or daughter of the mayor,” he said. Finally, Smith worked for Music for All to help spread the group’s innovative (创新的) teaching methods worldwide. Even near the Arctic Circle, he started Greenland’s first youth orchestra. It was this work that led him to first visit Sweden in 2015. In Stockholm, he was shocked to see many helpless people arriving in the country. The following year, he moved to Gothenburg where he offered a music group for those people. He started with 13 students. Most of them had no background in music, but he lent them instruments and began teaching them. He named the group the Hope Orchestra to inspire them. “For me, that’s what a music education is about,” said Smith. “It’s about giving you new opportunities to learn about life, about challenges, about dreaming, and about connecting you to your soul.” 8. What can you see in the Hope Orchestra? A. The performers on the stage are all locals. B. Young people are not allowed to take part in it. C. The rising baton marks the start of music. D. The conductor is unwilling to perform. 9. Why did Smith found Hope Orchestra? A. To make more people perform. B. To improve people’s life. C. To enrich the rich’s daily life. D. To help his family earn money. 10. How did Smith feel about the atmosphere of Music for All? A. Equal. B. Demanding. C. Popular. D. Ambitious. 11. What is Smith mainly talking about in the last paragraph? A. Music can contribute to the dreams. B. Music is of great significance. C. Music can make people successful. D. Music can unite you and me. D While keeping up with friends on social media or embracing the latest apps on a smartphone have become important parts of daily life for many, experts say relying too much on the instant content of technology can have a negative impact on your real-world relationships. Winnipeg-based expert Susan Wenzel says she often sees couples fighting over technology encroaching on the attention they want from their partners. “The negative part would be the lack of undivided attention. I do see, in my office, a couple coming and saying that, whenever they talk to their partner, they’re not looking at them. They are watching TV or on their phone.” “If we are talking about building emotional bond with our partner, we do need undivided attention because ‘Your time matters, you matter to me, and you’re important to me. ‘ But technology can cause people to feel that they are not heard in a relationship.” Another danger of excessive (过度的) social media use, Wenzel says, is that people can start to compare all aspects of their lives — including the relationship with their partner — to the idealized versions people post on social apps, which can cause unhappiness in the relationship. “And it’s not that your relationship is bad — it’s just that you are comparing yourself with other people, and that comparison is the thief of joy.” “Taking time to really spend time with your partner without your electronics may really help to bond relationship with your partner,” she said. “That may help you to be able to pay them, pay attention to them, and to be able to indicate that, ‘Hey, I am here with you. You matter to me. And this time matters to us, too’.” It’s not all negative, however. In many cases, technology has brought couples closer together when they were in a long-distance relationship. “That was a game-changer for wife and I, who were dated long distance, just to be able to communicate somewhat face-to-face before she eventually moved over here. ” 12. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in paragraph two? A. Occupying. B. Promoting. C. Attempting. D. Quoting. 13. According to the article, what is the root of unhappiness? A. Electronic products with high prices. B. The worsening relationship with others. C. The preference to compare with others. D. Work that cannot be completed on time. 14. What has the author been emphasizing (强调) ? A. A new definition of happiness. B. The application of the new technology. C. The harm of mobile phones. D. The importance of sharing moments. 15. Who are most likely to support the instant content of technology according to the article? A. The school students. B. Couples living apart. C. Restaurant owners. D. The homeless. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Have you ever wondered what your pet is thinking or feeling? Mrs. Grady touched her hand to her heart. “That would be wonderful, boys. I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.” Mark was going to say that Mrs. Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off. “We’ll come back later.” Then they struggled through the snow out of Ms. Grady’s driveway. I’m writing to share the exciting news that I won first place in the English Singing Competition held by my school last Friday! The competition was filled with enthusiasm. Dozens of students participated, performing various English songs. The atmosphere was active as each performance received warm applause. When my turn came, I was extremely nervous. But as I started singing, I gradually relaxed and lost myself in the music. Winning this competition not only improved my English but also boosted my confidence significantly. I’m really proud of this achievement. Can’t wait to hear about your stories! He felt really bad about leaving her. “Jamie, ” he said seriously, “Mrs. Grady helped me when I was in trouble. She’s always been so nice to us. How can we just walk away because she doesn’t have money right now? The video game isn’t that important. ” Jamie looked a bit unhappy at first. But he nodded soon. Then they turned around and headed back to Mrs. Grady’s. With their shovels in hand, they started to shovel the snow. Hearing the sound outside, Mrs. Grady opened the door, surprise and gratitude filling her eyes. There stood Mark and Jamie, shoveling snow fast. Their faces were red, but they smiled. Her eyes filled with tears. “You. . . you came back, ” she whispered. Mark wiped the sweat from his forehead. “We couldn’t leave you. ” Jamie added, “Your cookies are better than money anyway. ” Mrs. Grady hugged them tightly.
