The Amazon rainforest is nearing a tipping point, according to researchers from the University of Exeter, UK.
Previous studies have warned that the world’s largest rainforest, which acts as the lung of the Earth, is approaching a critical threshold. But most past research has depended on projections using models, not real-world observations.
Now, Tim Lenton and his colleagues have used two sets of satellite data covering between 1996 and 2016 to measure the greenness of the Amazon over time, watching for how it recovered after impacts such as drought and fires.
They found that since the early 2000s, 76 percent of the region had become less resilient. Importantly, says Lenton, the signal of this growing trouble was picked up without immediately obvious changes such as huge drops in the forest’s biomass or tree cover.
“Why do we care about it? It’s worth reminding ourselves that if it gets to that tipping point and we lose the Amazon rainforest then we get a significant feedback to global climate change,” says Lenton. He says a change into savannah would unlock about 90 billion tons of carbon dioxide stored in the trees and soil.
Lenton says he cannot put an exact date on how far off the rainforest's tipping point might be, but he expects it to be a process that would take in a few years. Other Amazon experts say the research adds to a growing body of evidence that the rainforest is approaching a tipping point.
The changes aren't the same throughout the rainforest. The south-eastern part of the Amazon has already changed to the point at which it is now a carbon emitter rather than a carbon sink.
Matt Finer at the Amazon Conservation non-profit organization says the research could help decide which remaining parts of the forest to prioritize for protection. “The western and north-east Amazon appear the most resilient, showing the need to protect these areas now and in the future from any more damages,” he says.
4 How does Lenton conduct his research?
A. By using previous models. B. By collecting data from the locals.
C. By observing drought and fires. D. By using data from satellites.
5. What can we learn about the changes in the forest?
A. They are not very noticeable at present. B. They have little effect on climate.
C. People needn’t worry about them. D. People have prepared for them.
6. What does the underlined word “resilient” in the 4 paragraph mean?
A. Able to produce carbon. B. Able to recover.
C. Easy to extinct. D. Easy to be observed.
7. What does the author intend to do with the last paragraph?
A. To list the threats facing the rainforest. B. To show the differences of the changes.
C. To list the results of the research. D. To show the significance of the research.

Often called “the Lady with the Lamp”, Florence Nightingale was a caring nurse and a leader. She is mostly known for making hospitals a cleaner and safer place to be.
Although her parents were from England, Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy while they were traveling. Growing up in a wealthy family, Florence Nightingale was homeschooled by her father and expected to get married at a young age. However, Nightingale believed she received a “calling” from God to help the poor and the sick. Despite the initial disapproval, her father eventually allowed her to go to Germany and then Paris to study. By the time she was 33, Nightingale was already making a name for herself in the nursing community.
When the Crimean War began in 1854, the British, with the lack of medical supplies, overcrowding, and dirty conditions, were unprepared to deal with a large number of sick and injured soldiers. The Secretary of War, Sidney Herbert asked Nightingale to manage a group of nurses that would go to treat the wounded soldiers. When they got there, the doctors were unwelcoming because they did not want to work with female nurses. However, as the number of patients increased, the doctors needed their help. The nurses brought supplies, nutritious food and cleanliness to the military hospital. Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, so they gave her the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp”. Within six months, Nightingale and her team transformed the hospital, and the death rate went down significantly because of their work.
When Nightingale returned from the war, she continued to improve the conditions of hospitals. She wrote 150 books, pamphlets (小册子), and reports on health-related issues. In her later years, often bedridden from illness, she continued to advocate for safe nursing practices until her death. Although Florence Nightingale died on August 13th, 1910, at the age of 90, her legacy continues.
8. What did Nightingale’s parents expect her to do at a young age?
A. To get married. B. To travel in Italy.
C. To study in Germany. D. To help the poor and the sick.
9. How did the doctors react when the nurse team arrived at first?
A. Passionate. B. Welcoming. C. Uncooperative. D. Indifferent.
10. Why was Nightingale nicknamed “the Lady with the Lamp”?
A. She liked collecting lamps.
B. She often stayed up late for study.
C. She brought lamps for the military hospital to use.
D. She usually checked on the soldiers at night carrying a lamp.
11. What will be the probable content for the next paragraph?
A. The books Nightingale wrote.
B. The continued impact Nightingale has made.
C. The difficulties Nightingale encountered before.
D. The great things Nightingale did during her lifetime.

With a brain the size of a pinhead, insects possess a great sense of direction. They manage to locate themselves and move through small openings. How do they do this with their limited brain power? Understanding the inner workings of an insect’s brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen shows with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect.
It’s not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. “Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer how far away things are. This works well when moving in a straight line, but reality is not that simple. To keep things manageable for their limited brain power, they adjust their behaviour: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make another straight line.
In search of the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects.
The fact that a robot can find its position in a realistic environment is not new. Rather, the model gives insight into how insects do the job, and how they manage to do things so efficiently. In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient.
In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She comments.
12. Why is “a train” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To illustrate the principle of train motion. B. To highlight why human vision is limited.
C. To explain how insects perceive distances. D. To compare the movement of trees and houses.
13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Schoepe’s model?
A. Its novel design. B. Its theoretical basis.
C. Its possible application. D. Its working mechanism.
14. What do the researchers think of the finding?
A. Amusing. B. Discouraging. C. Promising. D. Contradictory.
15. What will Chicca’s follow-up study focus on?
A. Inventing insect-like chips. B. Studying general-purpose robots.
C. Creating insect-inspired computers. D. Developing energy-efficient hardware.

Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her anxious and nervous. The wind roared (呼啸) and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, and at the same time Mum was putting their important documents (文件) and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary all of a sudden, “I think we have to leave here right away!”
“No!” said Dad loudly, “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really frightened!” cried Mary. “We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “or the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. “Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time, “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be all right,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice sounded calm, but Mary could tell she was worried, too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

4. How does Lenton conduct his research?
A. By using previous models. B. By collecting data from the locals.
C. By observing drought and fires. D. By using data from satellites.
5. What can we learn about the changes in the forest?
A. They are not very noticeable at present. B. They have little effect on climate.

C The difficulties Nightingale encountered before.

【39题详解】
考查冠词。句意同上。此处泛指“一个障碍”,且barrier以辅音音素开头,应用不定冠词a。故填a。

故填is acquired。

【45题详解】

【答案】Dear editor,
I am writing to recommend Yang Chaoyue, my favorite singer and actress, as youngsters’ role model.
Known for ranking third in the talent competition Produce 101, Yang has been thought to be extremely lucky. Though she is not perfect and has flaws, she pursues her dreams under the pressure of external doubts and internal struggles.
To some extent, I can see myself in her. Yang, who used to be an ugly duckling but persists in her goals through adversity, gives me hope that I could grow up to be a beautiful swan one day. That’s why I recommend her as a role model without hesitation.
Yours sincerely
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Caught in a flood

【答案】One possible version:
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They believed that they should stay in the house. They thought it would be really dangerous to try to walk through the water to get to higher ground. “Mary, we’ll have to go upstairs and wait there,” said Mum. “OK, Mum, if that’s what you think is best ...” Mary replied uncertainly. So they went upstairs and waited. Downstairs, water started flooding into the living room and kitchen. All three of them were nervous, but at least they had disaster supplies, including food and drinking water.
Finally, the rain came to a stop. But Mary and her family couldn’t leave while the house was still flooded. They listened to the radio and learned that rescue workers in boats were coming to rescue people who were trapped in their homes. They waited for a boat to arrive at their house. Fortunately, about half an hour later, the rescue workers in a boat discovered them and took them to a safe place in time. Their house had been badly damaged, but they were all happy to be still alive. While life is full of uncertainties, there is always hope!
