Shanya Gill, a 12-year-old middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Society for Science's annual middle school competition for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, according to a press release from the organization.
Shanya's inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. " I had never really experienced something like that before," she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder's Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. " They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down," she added.
After she studied fire statistics and saw how common fires are, Shanya decided that she was going to do something about it. She spent more than a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could prevent the fire. That's because smoke detectors sense active fires from the smoke in the air, while Shanya's thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
Her complex system has two parts, a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer. The device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message alert.
Creating the prototype (原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the coding. "I had two designs, and the final device succeeded because it outperformed smoke detectors in speed and accuracy," Shanya said. She wants to bring the costs down to s$60 to make it even more affordable than hardwired smoke detectors.
"Shanya saw a problem and tried hard to solve it, and that's what we need to encourage with all young people," said Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. Her remarkable research not only reflects her talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.
24. What inspired Shanya to design the fire detection system?
A. A neighbor's economic loss. B. A report on The Washington Post.
C. A terrible restaurant experience. D. A horrible fire in her community.
25. How can Shanya's fire detection system help prevent fire?
A. By having people updated. B. By making a warning call.
C. By controlling the water tap. D. By putting out a heat source.
26. Why did the final device succeed?
A. It was fast and precise. B. It was cheap and simple.
C. It was complex and unique. D. It was affordable and convenient.
27. What may Ajmera agree with?
A. Teenagers are the architect of the future.
B. A problem is a chance to bring out the best.
C. The thirst for knowledge is a never-ending one.
D. The best way to predict the future is to create it.

The School District of Philadelphia is making a strategic move to position itself as a national leader in integrating artificial intelligence into education. In a groundbreaking partnership with University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, the district is set to launch the Pioneering AI in School Systems (also known as PASS) program in March 2025.
This project is getting support from the Marrazzo Family Foundation and Penn’s Catalyst Education Center. It’s a big step forward using AI in schools in a smart way. If it works well, other cities might follow Philadelphia’s example.
PASS is designed to help schools get ready for AI. It has three parts that focus on different levels of using AI. District leaders will learn how to make a plan for using AI that fits with the school’s goals. Principals will learn how to use AI in their schools. Teachers will get training on how to use AI tools to make lessons more personalized, improve teaching, and track how students are doing. Most importantly, teachers will focus on how AI can help in the classroom every day, like finding out what students need help with and giving them tailored resources.
PASS comes at a time when schools are trying to figure out how AI can help learning. Tools like ChatGPT are becoming popular with teachers and students. AI has great potential, but it also has challenges. Philadelphia’s school leader, Tony Watlington, thinks PASS can make waves. “We need to get our students ready for a future where technology will play a big role in their success,” he said. “PASS is set to transform teaching methods and make sure students are ready for college and work.”
Not many school districts in the U.S. have a program like PASS. When PASS starts in March 2025, people will be watching to see how it works. If it’s successful, it could be a model for other districts that are trying to use AI in schools. As schools across the nation deal with similar questions, Philadelphia may well become a leader in showing how AI can transform learning thoughtfully and strategically.
28. What does the PASS program aim to do?
A. Provide support for the foundation. B. Teach students how to code AI tools.
C. Replace teachers with AI technology D. Integrate AI into the education system.
29. What is the key feature of the program?
A. Its practical application plan. B. Its structured training model.
C. Its unique resource distribution. D. Its personalized leaning process.
30. What does the underlined phrase “make waves” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Bring about positive and far-reaching changes.
B. Create unnecessary conflicts in the educational field.
C. Spark discussions about educational innovation.
D. Cause troubles that stop educational progress.
31. What can be concluded about PASS?
A. PASS has gained ground in people’s mind.
B. PASS holds great potential for a brighter future.
C. PASS is bound to set a perfect example for others.
D. PASS will be widely adopted across the nation any time soon.

A new algorithm(计算程序)may make robots safer by making them more aware of human inattentiveness.
"There are many accidents happening in the place where humans and robots work together every day due to carelessness - most of them, unfortunately, from human errors," said Mehdi Hosseinzadeh, assistant professor in Washington State University. "Robots act as planned and follow the rules, but the humans not. That's the most difficult and challenging problem."
Robots working with people are increasingly common in industries, but repetitive and laborious work can make people lose their focus and make mistakes. Most computer programs help robots react when a mistake happens. Those algorithms might focus either on improving efficiency or safety, but they haven't considered the changing behavior of the people they're working with.
As part of their effort to develop a plan for the robots, the researchers first worked to assess the level of human carelessness, looking at factors such as how often a human ignores or misses a warning. "We defined the carelessness, and the robot observed human's behavior and tried to understand it," he said. "The conception of carelessness level is something new. If we know which human is inattentive, we can do something about that."
Once the robot identifies careless behavior, it is programmed to change how it interacts with the human acting that way, working to reduce the chance that the person might cause a workplace error. So, for instance, the robot might change the way it manages its tasks to avoid getting in the human's way. The robot continuously updates the carelessness level and any changes that it observes.
The researchers tested their plan with a computerized simulation (模拟). "The core idea is to make the algorithm less sensitive to the behavior of careless humans," said Hosseinzadeh. "Our results revealed that the proposed program has the capability of improving efficiency and safety."
They are planning to test their work in a laboratory with real robots and people - and eventually in field studies.
32. Why do people tend to make mistakes working with robots?
A. They are inexperienced. B. They may become inattentive.
C. They are slow in pace. D. They may dislike robot workmates.
33. What is the first step to develop the new algorithm?
A. Building a theory model. B. Observing humans' behavior.
C. Quantifying the human carelessness. D. Measuring the robot's performance.
34. What can we learn about the study?
A. It is far from perfect. B. It is sure to offer safety.
C. It needs to be tested further. D. It is insensitive to the problems.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Humans and Robots Share the Workplace
B. Humans' Errors Affect the Robots' Working
C. Robot Meets with New Challenge from Humar
D. Robot Planning Tool Makes Up for Humar Carelessness

Ten-year-old Riley Christensen and her mother, Lynn, were sitting in front of the family computer, checking out models and prices of bikes. “Let’s pick one out for your birthday,” Lynn suggested to her daughter. The air in the room was filled with excitement as they scrolled through various options, envisioning the joy when Riley cycled around the neighborhood. They laughed together, exploring the features of each bike, and discussing colors.
As Riley scrolled down the home page of the Bike Rack, a shop in their town of St. Charles, Illinois, a video link for Project Mobility caught her eye. She clicked on it out of curiosity, unaware that this simple click would unfold a profound story of compassion and sympathy. The video clip began to narrate the inspiring journey of Bike Rack co-owner Hal Honeyman. Through it, Lynn and Riley were transported into the world of Project Mobility, witnessing how Hal Honeyman had transformed a passion for biking into an organization dedicated to providing specially engineered bicycles for those facing physical challenges. The video footage (镜头) painted a vivid picture of the positive impact these adapted bikes had on individuals — accident victims, injured veterans (老兵), and children with disabilities, including Hal’s own son, who had been born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫).
“I don’t want a bike for myself. I’m going to buy a bike for one of those kids,” Riley told her mother. Two days later, she showed Lynn a letter she had written asking for donations. “I think it’s amazing for a guy to make bikes for kids who can’t walk,” the letter said. “I saw how happy a boy was when he got one... I’m writing to ask for your help.”
Lynn was blown away by her daughter’s effort, but doubts quickly emerged. The cost of just one of those special bikes could be as high as $4,000. Riley could never raise the money.

Short-Video Social Platforms: Good or Bad?
Short-video social platforms have gained popularity due to their engaging, easy-to-watch content and the opportunity they provide for creativity. Users can share their talents and connect with a wide audience.
However, these platforms have both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, they encourage creativity and social interaction. On the negative side, excessive use can lead to time wastage and mental health issues, especially among teenagers. Additionally, some content may be misleading or inappropriate.
In conclusion, while short-video platforms offer benefits, they should be used wisely to avoid their negative impacts.
读后续写:
Nonetheless, her letter went out to 75 relatives and friends. To her surprise, the response was overwhelming. The letter brought not only encouraging words and heartfelt wishes but also an unexpected flood of generosity. Friends and family members, touched by Riley’s compassion and driven by the noble cause, started contributing funds for the specially engineered bikes. Riley, initially uncertain about her ability to raise the necessary funds, found herself surrounded by a community eager to support her mission. The teen ultimately raised enough to pay for three bikes.
On her birthday, Riley delivered the bicycles to three lucky kids. The joy on the children’s faces was immeasurable, and Riley couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of fulfillment. Her family members also thought highly of Riley’s campaign, saying it was the act of kindness that really counted. On that special day, amidst the laughter and gratitude, Riley and her family experienced the true essence of giving — the joy that arises not only from receiving but, more importantly, from being a source of happiness and hope for others.
