二、完形填空。
I was tired and hungry after a long day of work. When I walked into the living room, my 12-year-old son looked 1 at me and said, “I love you.” I didn’t know what to say. 2 several seconds all I could do was to stand there and stare down at him. My first thought was that he must need 3 with his homework or he was trying to 4 me for some news. Finally I asked, “What was that all about?” “Nothing.” He said, “my teacher said we should tell our parents that we love them and see what they say. It’s a(n) 5 .”
The next day I called his teacher to find out more about this “experiment” and how the other parents had reacted.
“Basically, most of the fathers had the 6 reaction as you did.” The teacher said, “when I first 7 we try this, I asked the children what they thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble.” “The 8 is,” the teacher explained, “feeling loved is an important part of 9 . It’s something all human beings 10 .
What I’m trying to tell the children is that it’s too 11 that we don’t all express those feelings. A boy should be fluent to tell his dad that he loves him.”
The teacher, a middle-aged man, understands how 12 it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.
When my son came to me that evening, I held on to him for 13 second. And just 14 he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you, too.”
I don’t know if saying that made either of us healthier, but it did feel pretty good. Maybe next time if my children say “I love you”, it would not take me a whole 15 to think of the right answer.

三、阅读理解。
The cold wind cut through my enthusiasm(热情) as a tourist in Washington D.C., so I entered the nearest restaurant for warmth. I ordered a coffee, and began watching people.
At that time, I saw a man seated nearby and from his eager eyes, I realized that he noticed the delicious food. His tired body and worn-out clothes shouted, “Homeless, homeless!”
“How long has it been since he ate last time?” I wondered. I hoped that he could get close to me for a handout(施舍物). But he never did. A silent war broke out in my head—one side was telling me to mind my own business, and the other was telling me to offer him some food.
While my inner debate moved on, a well-dressed young couple walked up to him. “Excuse me, sir,” the husband began. “We just finished eating, and our appetites weren’t as big as we had thought. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He gave the man some food. “Thank you. Merry Christmas!” the man replied. The man carefully watched his new food, and was about to eat.
Something that happened next shocked me. An old man in pants, an old jacket and open shoes entered the hall and walked towards us. My neighbor saw the situation. Setting aside his meal, he stood up and guided the old man to the table.
“Hi, my name is Jack,” he said, “and one kind person brought me this meal. I just finished eating and hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” The old man answered thankfully. “Sure, but only if you go halfway with me on that sandwich.”
I left the restaurant that day feeling warmer than I had ever thought possible.

Do you sometimes hesitate(犹豫)before asking others for things? As the saying goes, “He who hesitates is lost. " Don’t hesitate. You can't control how other people will act. 1 Here are four things you can do to get other people to say “yes”:
2 If you don't care about what the other party wants or needs, it is unlikely they will say "yes”. Most people are, as Wharton professor and organizational psychologist(心理学家) Adam Grant calls them, “matchmakers” --- people who help if you help them. Few are “givers”--- people who help without seeking anything in return(回报).
Make the person feel comfortable. It is not so difficult to think about what the other person wants. 3 If you want them to feel comfortable, they need to trust you. If you want the other person to say “yes” to your request, think about the other person.
Be silent. Still, you can make the person feel briefly uncomfortable. You do not have to immediately respond. Pause(暂停). Be silent. 4 It can make the other person want to fill the emptiness, start talking and give in to what you want.
Let the person say "no” first. 5 Chris Voss argues that getting the other person to say “no” is a strategy for making the person feel comfortable.
A. Silence causes discomfort.
B. Be smart in how you sell your idea.
C. But it is very hard to get them to trust you.
D. Think about what the other person wants or needs.
E. They are more likely to say “yes" if you make it a win-win scene.
F. Sometimes, you need the other person to say “no" before they will say "yes".
G. But you can control your actions in a way that can increase the chances of a favorable result.
