Salmon Among fatty fish, salmon has a reputation as being the best for you. On top of the fish’s high omega-3s — short for omega-3 fatty acids, salmon’s pink colour comes from its high levels of astaxanthin, which helps lower cholesterol. Salmon is also a rich source of vitamin B12, which we need to form red blood cells and is a major player in the development and function of brain and nerve cells. Sardines Like salmon, sardines are packed with omega-3s, and they are also an excellent source of calcium, which is an essential part of building strong bones. Sardines also naturally contain vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium and contributes to a good mood. As they are usually bought in tin cans, sardines are relatively inexpensive and make a great option if you are shopping on a tight budget. Cod This white fish is rich in phosphorus, a mineral that helps your body use and store energy from food and works with calcium to build strong bones. Phosphorus can also regulate your heartbeat and promote normal muscle and nerve function. “Cod is great for picky eaters who don’t usually like the taste of fish,” says Annie Tsang, a registered dietitian. Rainbow Trout An 85-gram serving of rainbow trout delivers 81 per cent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D. Plus, this fish is high in healthy fats but low in mercury. Human industrial activity releases mercury into the air, and it eventually comes back down in rain and is absorbed by fish. However, rainbow trout are low in mercury because they are lower on the food chain and so eat fewer polluted fish themselves. 21. Which is the best choice for a family living on relief? A. Salmon. B. Sardines. C. Cod. D. Rainbow Trout. 22. What is special about Rainbow Trout? A. It contains vitamin D. B. It’s good value for money. C. It is free of pollution. D. It takes in the least mercury. 23. Where is the article most probably taken from? A. A certain website. B. A research paper. C. A recipe book. D. A food advertisement. B What is the likelihood of you having someone who looks just like you? Would it be a good thing? And if you did have one, would you want to meet them? Consider how often your facial features are used to identify you. Your passport, ID card and driving licence all bare your face. To enter your workplace, you likely need to be recognizable. You may need your face to unlock your smartphone and possibly need it to exclude you from being present at a crime scene. The word “doppelganger” refers to a person who looks the same as you, essentially sharing your features, those that you thought were unique to you and your identity. Not an identical twin, as a doppelganger has no relation to you. The idea originated in German folklore. A doppelganger was said to be a spirit-double that could replicate every human and animal on the earth. So, let’s get real. What are the chances of you having one in the first place? There is said to be one in 135 chance of an absolute dead ringer for you existing somewhere in the world, so the chances are pretty low, despite folk wisdom promising you otherwise. And the chances of meeting? The mathematical certainty of finding this particular person is supposedly less than one in a trillion! That said, these statistics may be a good thing. Historically, having a double hasn’t always been a positive. Back in 1999, an innocent American man, indistinguishable from the real criminal, was sent to prison for robbery, where he stayed for 19 years. In the end, it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. In a different case, a woman in New York was accused of trying to poison her doppelganger with deadly cheesecake so that she could steal her identity. 24. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? A. Overuse of identity information. B. Leakage of identity information. C. Wide application of facial features. D. Misuse of personal information. 25. What does the underlined word “replicate” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Copy. B. Identify. C. Motivate. D. Recognize. 26. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4? A. Proving a theory. B. Contradicting a belief. C. Listing statistics. D. Raising a question. 27. How does the author clarify the negative influence of “doppelganger”? A. By interpreting data. B. By citing criminals. C. By studying possibility. D. By giving examples. C On April 16, 2022, at an indoor sports venue in Daegu, South Korea, Kim Kyu Tae managed to break the world record for the longest paper plane flight with each one of his eight throws. The previous record of 69.14 metres set by Joe Ayoob and John M. Collins had been standing for a decade, but Kim managed to break it on all of his eight measured attempts (71.813 metres being the shortest and 77.134 metres being the farthest). But Kim was just one part of a team who worked hard on designing and building this simple-looking but remarkable paper plane. Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. That’s where his partners, Chee Yie Jian, who designed the plane, and fellow South Korean, Shin Moo Joon, who was tasked with folding the paper, come in. Together, they became an unstoppable force. Interestingly, Chee, who comes from Malaysia, wasn’t present in Daegu for the record-breaking event, and he has never even met his two teammates in person before. The paper plane building community is apparently global, and they were able to lay out their plans online. While paper planes are considered mere toys by a lot of people, to those who build and fly them competitively, they are complex creations that vary greatly in terms of paper used, geometry and weight. It all depends on the end goal of the designer. For their particular paper plane, the team decided to use CX22 100GSM, which is one of the highest quality 100GSM papers in the world, according to Shin Moo Joon. It was the same type of paper used by Ayoob and Collins for their world record attempt in 2012. Now that they’ve broken the world record, the three paper plane enthusiasts have their sights set on bigger things. They are confident that their creations can fly over 80 metres, provided they can find a more spacious indoor venue, and they are also considering tackling the record for “longest flying paper aircraft (duration)”, set by Takuo Toda of Japan (29.2 seconds). 28. Which has the least impact on paper plane’s performance? A. The player’s arm strength. B. The paper plane’s form. C. The designer’s competence. D. The quality of the paper. 29. What do we know about Chee Yie Jian? A. He and Shin Moo Joon are from the same country. B. He had never met his teammates before the game. C. He didn’t witness his partner setting the record. D. He is better at the art of folding paper planes. 30. Which best describes the process of making paper planes for competitions? A. Pleasing. B. Demanding. C. Competitive. D. Comparative. 31. What contributed to their successfully breaking the record? A. Working as a team. B. Finding an ideal venue. C. Using high-quality paper. D. Setting clear goals. D Hanai, the Hawaiian word for adoption, is also the name of a coffee shop in Phoenix, Arizona, US. It offers valuable hands-on job experience for youth aging out of the foster care system, who lack a permanent family for continued support. 18-year-old Trinity is one such youth. She once felt unsure about her future. “We get a lot of pity, but it doesn’t really help us out. It just makes it worse,” she told CBS News. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which offers support to American families in need, foster care is a temporary living arrangement for children whose parents are unable to care for them and whose situation has come to the attention of child welfare agencies. While in foster care, children may live with relatives or foster families. A key goal of foster care is to make sure that kids are living in stable families. However, around 20,000 young people age out of foster care each year when they turn 18 or 21, depending on the state they are in. These youth are more prone to homelessness, unemployment, crime and early parenthood compared to those who have a permanent home to go to. “It is vital for states and communities to have programmes like this for foster kids because these kids don’t have a support system. They don’t have a safety net,” Ryan Senters, the founder of Hanai, told CBS News. A 4-week programme was held recently at Hanai to introduce kids aged 15 and older to workplace skills. They work part-time at the cafe, learning everything from what to wear to how to deal with difficult customers. “I learned how to do interviews, time management for people, taking orders... communication, customer service... and I feel like that’s really helping,” Trinity told CBS News. Now she can comfortably take orders from customers, make coffee and serve food. She loves her job and hopes to work full-time after graduation. “People think we’re helping them, but honestly, no, they’re helping us,” Senters told CBS News. 32. Why does the author mention Trinity in Paragraph 1? A. To draw attention to the issue. B. To express sympathy for the girl. C. To make a remarkable contrast. D. To prove the popularity of Hanai. 33. What do we know about those in foster care? A. Their families are trying to offer lasting care and help. B. They have no option but to live with foster families. C. They are likely to be trapped in difficult situations. D. The foster care system has done enough to finance them. 34. How does the programme affect Trinity? A. She feels a sense of responsibility. B. She becomes talkative. C. She achieved academic success. D. She gains life skills. 35. What is the best title for the text? A Ryan Senters: a Caring Person B. Hanai: Offering Valuable Help C. As I stepped back home, my family waited for me. Everyone wanted to tell me something — especially eight-year-old Jeremy. He jumped up and down in order to be heard, and his voice carried above the other children’s, even above my husband Jerry’s. “Poster paper, Mama! I have to have poster paper. We’re having a contest at school.” I put him off, promising we’d talk about it later. As I moved about hurriedly, trying to decide what to do next, Jeremy kept reminding me, “I need the poster paper, Mama.” My third day home I managed to save about fifteen minutes to type an article. A small shadow fell across my paper. I knew who it would be before I looked up. I know he needs poster paper. I need to type. I smiled weakly at Jeremy and kept typing. He watched for a few more minutes, then turned and walked away. I almost didn’t hear his comment. “Contest is over tomorrow, anyway.” Get him that paper—now! I shut off my electric typewriter. “Let’s go get the paper, Jeremy.” He stopped, turned around and looked at me without even smiling or speaking—almost as though he hadn’t heard. “Come on,” I urged, grabbing my purse and the car keys. He still didn’t move. “Do you have something else you have to get, Mama?” “No, just your poster paper.” I headed for the door. Suddenly, a look of delight shot across his face, erasing the disbelief. He moved with amazing speed and dashed out to the car still wearing the Christmas morning expression. At the store, he grabbed my hand and started rapidly telling me about the poster contest. “It’s about fire prevention. The teacher announced it a long time ago, and when I first told you, you said we’d see later. Then you went out of town. The contest ends tomorrow. I’ll have to work hard. What if I win?” He went on with endless enthusiasm as though he’d only asked me one time for the paper. So I just listened. I listened to him as intently as I ever have anyone in my life. We also got the other items and at the cashier’s, Jeremy, who is usually shy when meeting strangers, said, “I’m making a poster. My mama brought me to the store to buy the stuff.” He tried to sound matter-of-fact, but his face gave him away. He worked silently and with great determination on the poster all afternoon. Paragraph 1: The winner of the contest was announced two days later. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: And a few weeks later, a large yellow envelope came in the mail addressed to Jeremy. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 江苏省2024—2025学年高三第一学期期末迎考卷 英 语 注意事项: 1. When will the woman meet her cousin? To begin with, I’d like to share my childhood memories. Well, my parents had gardens. So I could always pick fresh tomatoes, pull out carrots and taste sweet watermelons. M: Interesting! Many kids don’t know where food comes from. W: That’s why I started the Alice Waters Garden Project. M: Can you tell us something about it? For example, how does it work? W: We design and build a 5-acre garden first. The kids, mainly aged from 7 to 12, work in the garden with their hands in the dirt. Then they take what they’ve grown to the kitchen and spend time cooking and developing recipes. This is the way they learn something about teamwork, creativity, and most importantly where the food they eat every day comes from. 17. Recently, the Social Security Administration released a list of the most popular US baby names. “Emma” was the most popular name in states on the west coast, while “Liam” was the top choice in the Midwest. But in the southeastern area of the country, parents were more likely to name a boy “William” while “Ava” was a popular name for girls. And “Liam” has been at the top of the list for boys in the past two years. “Emma” was the most popular name for girls for the fifth year in a row. Jonah Berger is a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He found that names starting with K became popular after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. Americans heard the name of the storm in the news so often that it became familiar and appealing. A Here are the four best seafood options for your health. B 22. D 23. 根据Sardines中“As they are usually bought in tin cans, sardines are relatively inexpensive and make a great option if you are shopping on a tight budget. (由于沙丁鱼通常是用罐头装的,所以价格相对便宜,如果你预算紧张,沙丁鱼是一个不错的选择。)”可知,对于生活救济的家庭来说,沙丁鱼因其价格相对便宜,是一个很好的选择。故选B项。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。根据Rainbow Trout中“However, rainbow trout are low in mercury because they are lower on the food chain and so eat fewer polluted fish themselves. (然而,虹鳟鱼的汞含量很低,因为它们在食物链中的位置较低,所以它们自己吃的受污染的鱼也较少。)”可知,虹鳟鱼的特别之处在于它摄入的汞最少。故选D项。 【23题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一句“Here are the four best seafood options for your health. (以下是四种对健康有益的海鲜选项。)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了四种对健康有益的海鲜选项,并分别阐述了它们各自的特点和营养价值。这样的内容更可能出现在一本食谱书中,作为对不同食材的介绍和推荐。故选C项。 B What is the likelihood of you having someone who looks just like you? C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第二段“Consider how often your facial features are used to identify you. Your passport, ID card and driving licence all bare your face. To enter your workplace, you likely need to be recognizable. You may need your face to unlock your smartphone and possibly need it to exclude you from being present at a crime scene. (想想你的面部特征被用来识别你的频率有多高。你的护照、身份证和驾照都印着你的脸。要进入你的工作场所,你可能需要被认出来。你可能需要刷脸来解锁你的智能手机,或者需要它来证明你没有出现在犯罪现场。)”可知,本段主要讲述了面部特征在日常生活中的广泛应用,包括身份验证、进入工作场所、解锁手机等。因此,本段的主旨大意是面部特征的广泛应用。故选C项。 【25题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第三段“The word “doppelganger” refers to a person who looks the same as you, essentially sharing your features, those that you thought were unique to you and your identity. Not an identical twin, as a doppelganger has no relation to you. The idea originated in German folklore. A doppelganger was said to be a spirit-double that could replicate every human and animal on the earth. (“分身”这个词指的是一个和你长得一模一样的人,本质上和你共享特征,那些你认为只属于你和你的身份的特征。不是同卵双胞胎,因为分身和你没有任何关系。这个想法起源于德国民间传说。据说分身是一个灵魂双胞胎,可以replicate地球上的每一个人和动物。)”可知,分身被描述为一个可以复制地球上每一个人和动物的灵魂双胞胎,因此replicate的意思是“复制”。故选A项。 根据第四段“So, let’s get real. 根据第五段“That said, these statistics may be a good thing. A 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第二段中“Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. (Kim Kyu Tae是世界上最好的纸飞机投掷者之一,但如果飞机的设计和制作质量不佳,即使他拥有火箭般强劲的手臂,也很难打破世界纪录。)”可知,纸飞机的性能主要取决于飞机的设计、制作质量以及纸张的质量,而投掷者的手臂力量虽然重要,但相比之下影响较小。故选A项。 根据第二段中“Interestingly, Chee, who comes from Malaysia, wasn’t present in Daegu for the record-breaking event, and he has never even met his two teammates in person before. (有趣的是,来自马来西亚的Chee并没有出席在大邱举行的破纪录活动,而且他以前从未见过他的两位队友。)”可知,Chee Yie Jian并没有亲眼见证他的搭档创造纪录。故选C项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“While paper planes are considered mere toys by a lot of people, to those who build and fly them competitively, they are complex creations that vary greatly in terms of paper used, geometry and weight. (虽然很多人认为纸飞机只是玩具,但对于那些有竞争力地制作和飞行纸飞机人来说,它们是复杂的创造物,在纸张使用、几何形状和重量方面都有很大的不同。)”可推知,制作用于比赛的纸飞机是一个要求很高的过程。故选B项。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Kim Kyu Tae is one of the best paper plane throwers in the world, but even his rocket-powered arm can do little to break world records if the design of the plane and the build quality are lacking. That’s where his partners, Chee Yie Jian, who designed the plane, and fellow South Korean, Shin Moo Joon, who was tasked with folding the paper, come in. Together, they became an unstoppable force. (Kim Kyu Tae是世界上最好的纸飞机投掷者之一,但如果飞机的设计和制作质量不佳,即使他拥有火箭般强劲的手臂,也很难打破世界纪录。这时,他的合作伙伴就派上用场了,设计飞机的Chee Yie Jian和负责折纸的韩国同胞Shin Moo Joon。他们一起成为了一股不可阻挡的力量。)”可知,他们成功打破纪录的关键在于团队合作。故选A项。 D Hanai, the Hawaiian word for adoption, is also the name of a coffee shop in Phoenix, Arizona, US. A. Ryan Senters: a Caring Person B. Hanai: Offering Valuable Help C. Trinity: a Really Lucky Girl D. Foster Care: Lending a Hand 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段中“Hanai, the Hawaiian word for adoption, is also the name of a coffee shop in Phoenix, Arizona, US. It offers valuable hands-on job experience for youth aging out of the foster care system, who lack a permanent family for continued support. 18-year-old Trinity is one such youth. She once felt unsure about her future. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“However, around 20,000 young people age out of foster care each year when they turn 18 or 21, depending on the state they are in. These youth are more prone to homelessness, unemployment, crime and early parenthood compared to those who have a permanent home to go to. (然而,每年约有2万名年轻人在18岁或21岁时(取决于他们所在的州)从寄养系统中走出来。与那些有永久住所的年轻人相比,这些年轻人更容易陷入无家可归、失业、犯罪和早育的困境。)”可知,那些在寄养系统中的年轻人很可能陷入困境。故选C项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“A 4-week programme was held recently at Hanai to introduce kids aged 15 and older to workplace skills. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: The winner of the contest was announced two days later. Much to my delight, Jeremy won the first prize and his poster would be exhibited on the organizer’s official website. Besides that, he was also told that the Certificate of Award would be delivered soon and the story behind the contest should be shared on their website after the certificate was received. Jeremy’s face was lit up with excitement and he wrote his story about the contest up late at night. There was one sentence that jumped out at me: “And then my Mama stopped typing and listened to me and took me to the store.”  Paragraph 2: And a few weeks later, a large yellow envelope came in the mail addressed to Jeremy. His hands trembled with eagerness as he opened the letter, which said, “Congratulations, Jeremy! Your poster for Fire Prevention gives a significant warning to our citizens. Please share your story in two days.” After reading it, Jeremy, overwhelmed with the thrill, sang and dance, laughing aloud. I was glad I had made such a timely decision to listen to him that I didn’t spoil his enthusiasm. I framed his certificate as a constant reminder of what a big difference listening could make. 词汇激活 行为类 ①照亮:lit up/brighten up/shine with ②颤抖:trembled /shiver/shake ③装裱:framed /mount 情绪类 ①兴奋:excitement /thrill/excitedly ②高兴:glad /delighted/joyful 【点睛】[高分句型1] There was one sentence that jumped out at me: “And then my Mama stopped typing and listened to me and took me to the store.”(运用了that引导定语从句修饰先行词sentence) [高分句型2] His hands trembled with eagerness as he opened the letter, which said, “Congratulations, Jeremy!
