Dorothea Dix was born in 1802 in Massachusetts. When she was 12 years old, she left her unhappy home to live with her grandmother in Boston. There Dorothea went to school and was so quick at her lessons that two years later she went back to Worcester, Massachusetts and taught in a school for little children. She was only fourteen and rather small for her age. Anyway, she proved herself a good teacher, and the children loved her and respected her. In 1821, she opened a school for girls in Boston.
Gradually, her health broke down, and she began to think that she could never work any more, but after a long rest in England, she came back to America and did something far greater than teaching. She went through the whole country where she first observed the inhumane (残忍的) treatment of the mentally ill (精神病患者). During Dorothea’s traveling for nearly two years throughout the state, and meeting similar conditions, she always spoke kindly to the ill-treated, but she spoke angrily to the men who ill-treated them. In January 1843, she submitted to the Massachusetts legislature (立法机关) a detailed report of her fully documented findings.
In the next 40 years Dorothea inspired legislators in 15 US states and in Canada to establish state hospitals for the mentally ill. Her continuous efforts directly affected the building of 32 institutions in the United States. When the Civil War broke out, she went straight to Washington and offered to nurse the soldiers without pay. She hired houses to keep supplies in and bought an ambulance. In the past years the popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased, and so has the number of injuries. It has been estimated that rock climbing is now enjoyed by more than 9 million people in the US each year. Study findings revealed a 65 percent increase in the number of patients that were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021.
The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that about 40,000 patients were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021. The most common types of rock climbing-related injuries were fractures (骨折) and sprains (扭伤). The ankle was the most common body part to be injured (40 percent). Climbers in the study ranged in age from 2 to 74, with an average age of 26. The study also found that women took up a quarter of the injuries.
Falls were the primary reason for injury with over three-quarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fall-related injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall. Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
“We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbing-related injury,” explained the study author Lara McKenzie, PhD, director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital. “This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, certifies the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers.”
8. How many women climbers were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbing-related injuries between 2001 and 2021?
A. About 40,000. B. About 30,000. C. About 20,000. D. About 10,000.

A. the climber’s health conditions B. the climber’s age
C. the height of the fall D. the climber’s climbing experience
10. What can we know from the passage?
A. The popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased in the past years.
B. The knee was the most common body part to be injured for a climber.
C. The average of climbers in the study was 36.
D. Climbers who fell from heights lower than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated.
11. What does the underlined word “certifies” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Download. B. Confirm. C. Prevent. D. Imagine.

Mosquitoes (蚊子) are actually some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet. According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes cause over 700,000 deaths every year. But there is new hope in the battle between humans and mosquitoes. Scientists at Auburn University may have found the secret to stopping mosquitoes from spreading diseases. “We have created a type of fabric (织物) that could prevent mosquito bites,” says John Beckmann, who led the study.
Beckmann remembered a camping trip during which he had almost been eaten alive by mosquitoes despite wearing a long-sleeved shirt. “People often say, ‘Wear long sleeves,’” said Beckmann. “But long sleeves don’t block mosquitoes.”
While some companies are producing clothes that they say are bite-proof (防叮咬的), the clothes contain some harmful chemicals or are made of thick fabrics that are too hot to wear and are too easy for mosquitoes to overcome. That’s because there are holes in the makeup of their fabrics that mosquitoes and other biting insects can get through.
The key was to discover a fabric that removed these gaps and was still cool enough to wear in hot weather. “That is the reason why this project is not as easy as people think,” Beckmann said.
The team experimented by using a computer numerical control knitting (编织) machine that could be programmed with different patterns until they found a bite-proof one. But the researchers are still not satisfied and will be spending the next year perfecting the comfort aspect of the material and eventually creating a clothing line.
The hope is that finally any type of fabric can be knitted into the lab’s pattern so that all kinds of clothing companies from baby clothing producers to dress designers could create bite-proof clothing.
12. What happened to Beckmann during his camping trip?
A. He discovered several new kinds of mosquito. B. He felt hot in long-sleeved clothes.
C. He was badly bitten by mosquitoes. D. He mastered some skills in dealing with mosquitoes.
13. What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The popularity of bite-proof clothing.
B. Advancement in bite-proof clothing technology.
C. Weaknesses of current bite-proof clothing.
D. Comparisons between different types of bite-proof clothes.
14. We can know what the researchers will do the next year through _______.
A. Paragraph 5 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 2 D. Paragraph 1
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mosquitoes: the Silent Killers B. A Step Towards a Bite-free Future
C. The Battle Against Mosquitoes D. Useful Ways to Prevent Mosquito Bites

Emma is a teacher. She is 42 years old and lives a simple and regular life. Every day she teaches at school and takes care of her family after work. Although her life is stable, deep inside, Emma always has a desire to challenge herself and try something she has never done before.
One day, Emma’s son, Jay, came home excitedly with a flyer (宣传单) in his hand. “Mom, our school is having a parent-child mountain climbing competition, and I signed up!” Jay said with excitement.
Emma smiled and nodded, but she felt a bit uneasy inside. She hadn’t done any hard exercise for a long time, let alone a mountain climbing competition. However, Jay’s eyes were full of expectation, and Emma couldn’t say no.
“Please, Mom! Don’t refuse to do it. I know v you can do it!” Jay looked at Emma seriously, his eyes showing firmness.
Emma was surprised. She never thought she would join in a mountain climbing competition, but Jay’s words gave something in her heart. “I know you can do it” reminded her of what she often said to her students in class. She realized that if she didn’t believe in herself, how could she encourage her students?
So, Emma decided to take the challenge. She made a training plan, running every morning and doing strength training at the gym every evening. At first, her body was not used to it, and she often felt very tired. But whenever she wanted to give up, Jay’s words would echo in her ears, “I know you can do it!”
Months later, the day of the mountain climbing competition finally arrived. That morning, the sky was blue, and the sun was shining. Emma, Jay, and the other participants stood at the foot of the mountain. Her legs were shaking a bit, but her eyes were firm.

Dear Mark,
How have you been lately? I’m writing to share with you my experience of participating in the “A Great Chinese Scientist” English speech contest held by our school’s English club last week.
The purpose of the activity was to honor outstanding Chinese scientists. I chose to talk about Yuan Longping, who is known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. His achievement in developing high-yield hybrid rice has greatly contributed to solving food shortages worldwide.
I felt honored to participate and it was a great opportunity to improve my English speaking skills. The experience also deepened my understanding and admiration for Chinese scientists.
Best regards,
Li Hua

With the sound of a whistle, the competition began. Emma climbed with the crowd, her breathing becoming heavy, and her clothes soaked with sweat. But she never stopped. Whenever she felt tired, she would think of Jay’s trusting eyes and her own words of encouragement to her students. As she climbed, she met other parents who were also struggling but determined. They encouraged each other, sharing water and snacks. Emma felt a sense of community and support, which made her journey a little easier.
In the end, Emma reached the top of the mountain. Jay ran over excitedly and hugged her tightly. “Mom, you did it!” Jay’s face was full of pride. Emma smiled, her heart full of emotion. She understood that this climb was not only a physical challenge but also a spiritual one. She learned to believe in herself and not to back down in the face of difficulties. And all of this was thanks to Jay’s simple but powerful words, “I know you can do it!”
