Have you heard of a place that keeps growing? That’s the Yellow River Delta, the youngest land in China.
The delta is shaped by the Yellow River, the second-longest river in China. The river carries a large amount of sediment (沉淀物) to the sea. Over time, the sediment builds up and creates the delta. As the river keeps adding more sediment, the delta gets bigger every year. Now it covers an area of over 5,400 square kilometres—about 7.5 times the size of Singapore! When you look down at it from the sky, the Yellow River Delta is like a large fan spreading towards the sea.
The estuary (河口) of the Yellow River is a key part of the delta. It has a fantastic view. Here, the Yellow River rushes into the Bohai Sea. When they meet, a magical line appears. That’s because the river water doesn’t mix with the seawater. The line divides the water into two parts: on one side is the river’s brown water and on the other side is the seawater as blue as the sky.
The delta includes a big wetland. It’s a paradise for about 400 kinds of birds. Every year, millions of birds migrate (迁徙) here, so it’s called the “International Airport for Birds”. Some birds even make their homes in the delta. For example, the Oriental white storks, often called the “panda of migratory birds”, produce and raise their babies here. The Black-headed gulls which are in danger, also thrive in this special area.
The Yellow River Delta is really a wonder of nature, inviting more people to discover its beauty.
29.Why does the Yellow River Delta grow bigger?
A.The sea continues to cover it. B.The warmer weather creates it.
C.Chinese people keep building it. D.The river brings more sediment to it.
30.Which picture shows the Yellow River Delta?
A. B. C. D.
31.How does the writer show the value of the delta in Paragraph 4?
A.By asking questions. B.By listing steps. C.By giving examples. D.By telling stories.
32.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.The Yellow River Delta: A Lively and Young Land
B.The Yellow River Delta: A Place Calling for Help
C.The Yellow River Delta: A Huge Man-made Wonder
D.The Yellow River Delta: An International Airport for Birds
It was a long and hot summer that year, and Anne enjoyed it with the whole heart.
When it was over, she went back and studied hard in Miss Stacy’s Queen’s class for that terrible thing known as “the Entrance”. Anne grew so quickly that one day Marilla was surprised to find that the girl was taller than herself. Another difference was that she talked less.
“You don’t talk half as much as you did in the past, Anne. What has come over you?”
“I don’t know... I don’t want to talk as much,” Anne said, turning red. “It’s nicer to think, dear, have pretty thoughts and keep them in one’s heart, like treasures.”
After months of studying, Anne went to town for the exams. When she returned to Green Gables, three weeks passed without the exam results appearing. Anne did not know what to do with herself!
Then one evening, Anne was sitting at her open window when she saw Diana come running up the hill with a newspaper in her hand.
“Anne, you’ve passed,” she cried,” “and you came first—you and Gilbert both—you are tied.”
“Well now, I always said it,” said Matthew, looking at the exam result list delightedly.
“I knew you could beat them all easily.”

①Life is full of unexpected moments that can surprise us. When facing unexpected situations, we often find ourselves at a crossroads: to react or to respond. While these two words may seem similar, they are actually different ways to deal with challenges. Understanding the difference can help us make better choices in difficult situations.
②Reacting is our natural response. It’s immediate and emotional. When we react, we want to follow a simple pattern: something happens, we feel anxious, and then we continue without much thought. So some regrettable decisions are always made because it doesn’t allow time for proper consideration.
③Responding, on the other hand, is a more thoughtful process. Before we take actions to do with the event, it helps to create more space. This space allows us to observe our emotions, understand the situation clearly, and make thoughtful choices. The responding process can be broken down into four steps: pause, process, plan, and proceed.
④Research from UCLA has shown that simply naming our emotions—a technique called Affect Labeling (or Emotion Labeling) that is the practice of identifying and naming our emotional state, such as saying “I feel anxious” or “I’m disappointed right now”. It can greatly reduce stress levels. By doing this, we create mental distance from our emotions, making it easier to respond wisely.
⑤ ▲ You might make mistakes in your work, or you just forgot your homework at home or had an argument with a friend. Instead of reacting right away—like yelling (吼叫), crying, or doing something you’ll regret, try these following four steps: First, stop and take three deep breaths. Second, say to yourself how you’re feeling. Third, think about what choices you have. Fourth, choose the best action and do it.
⑥Just as life’s unexpected moments test us at every crossroads, the choice between reacting and responding greatly shapes our journey. By practicing the art of thoughtful response again and again, we change those surprising challenges into chances for growth. Two ways of thinking seem similar at first, but one gives you a lasting superpower: when things get unknown, you stay calm and choose wisely.
38.What is the key difference between “reacting” and “responding”?
A.Reacting is planned, while responding is natural.
B.Reacting needs help from others, while responding doesn’t.
C.Reacting is for big problems, while responding is for small problems.
D.Reacting is quick and emotional, while responding is calm and thoughtful.
39.Why does the author mention “Affect Labeling” in Paragraph 4?
A.To argue emotions should be ignored. B.To suggest only experts should use it.
C.To show how naming emotions reduces stress. D.To announce it as an ineffective emotional tool.
40.Which sentence can be put in the “ ▲ ”?
A.These steps are too difficult for most people to follow.
B.This way of responding works for all kinds of problems.
C.When facing major life challenges, these steps won’t help.
D.Experts suggest reacting immediately to solve problems.
41.What is the best title and structure of the passage?
A.Responding wisely B.Reacting quickly
C.Responding wisely D.Reacting quickly

Always on the Road
Learning is a lifelong journey because every day brings something new. As the old saying goes, “Read as many as ten thousand books and travel as far as ten thousand miles.”
Travel is an important activity. Not only can it help us increase our knowledge, it also allows us to step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves. I’ve climbed snowy mountains, surfed waves, tried paragliding and so on. I felt the power of nature. I think it is important for all of us to make an effort to travel and explore the world around us. There are so many good memories during the trips. I have taken many photos and kept diaries to share with my families and friends. It always brings us great joy. So, come on! Pack your bags and hit the road.
Hope you can achieve a better self and life.
