A【24八年级下·江苏镇江·期末】—Adapted from Soapy’s Choice by O. Henry
What was the matter with the police? Soapy was really unhappy now, but he stopped making a noise. How could he get to prison(监狱)? The wind was cold, and he pulled his thin coat around him.
But, just then, inside a shop, he saw a man with an expensive umbrella. The man put his umbrella down near the door, and took out a cigarette. Soapy went into the shop, picked up the umbrella, and slowly, he began to walk away. The man came quickly after him. “That’s my umbrella,” he said.
“Oh, is it?” Soapy replied. “Then why don’t you call a policeman? I took it, and you say you’re your umbrella. Go on, then. Call a policeman! Look! There’s one on the corner.” The umbrella man looked unhappy. “Well, you know, perhaps I’ve made a mistake. I took it from a restaurant this morning. If it’s yours, I’m very sorry...”
“Of course it’s my umbrella,” Soapy said.
The policeman looked at them, and the umbrella man walked away. The policeman went to help a beautiful young girl to cross the road.
Soapy was really ▲ now. He threw the umbrella away and said many bad things about policemen. Just because he wanted to go to prison to spend the coming cold days, they did not want to send him there. He could do nothing wrong!
He began to walk back to Madison Square and home--his seat.
But on a quiet corner, Soapy suddenly stopped. Here, in the middle of the city, was a beautiful old church. Through one purple window he could see a soft light, and sweet music was coming from inside the church. For a few seconds it was like a country church and Soapy remembered other happier days. He thought of the days when he had a mother, friends and beautiful things in his life.
Then he thought about his life now—the empty days, the dead plans. And then a wonderful thing happened. Soapy decided to change his life and be a new man. “Tomorrow,” he said to himself, “I’ll go into town and find work.”

There’s a saying that goes: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year (财富). 1 .”
For thousands of years, the greatest thinkers have suggested the same thing: 2 . Scientific research shows that helping others may be the secret to living a life that is happier, healthier and more meaningful.
Giving can feel great. 3 . The key is to find the way that works for you. Follow these tips:

Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. We don’t all have the same amount of money, but everyone as time. 4 .
5 . “Selfless giving...easily becomes overwhelming,” psychologist Adam Grant says. He advises giving to others, but keeping your personal and emotional needs in mind. You matter too!

The boat arrived at a small town, and Legree and his slaves (奴隶) got off. Tom and the other men walked all the way to the plantation.
They stopped in front of a house. It was large, but it looked empty and uncomfortable, the glass of some windows were broken and there were bits of wood and boxes on the ground. Two slaves, Sambo and Quimbo, were Legree’s two main helpers on the plantation, and they arrived with dogs.
“Don’t try to run away,’’ said Legree to Tom and the others, “or the dogs will follow you.”
“Sambo,’’ said Legree, “take these new slaves down to the cabins.”
The slaves followed Sambo to the cabins. They were in a row, near the plantation and far from the house. Tom’s heart sank when he saw them. Each one had only one room, without any furniture.
They had to wait in line for their turn to cook a very poor meal. Then they all went to sleep on the floor in the cabins.

When I saw Ronny for the first time, he looked like other kids in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as a Reading Mum. However, he usually arrived at school wearing old clothes.
On the day when it was Ronny’s turn to read, he sat very close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he tried to speak out “Bud the Sub”. It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw” when he said it because of his difficulty with the alphabet(字母表).
The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress but he was still below the level of grade. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award ceremony. I had gifts and certificates(证书) for everyone. It took me a while to think about which Ronny fitted. I believed the gift could cheer him up. I finally decided on “The Most Progressive Reader”. I showed him his certificate and a book.
A few days later, I saw Ronny reading the book when I went back to the school. His teacher said, “He hasn’t put that book down. That’s the first book that he’s ever owned.”
Fighting back tears, I came near Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He nodded.

A new rubbish sorting system has been put into use in Beijing. Local people not only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes(二维码) on it.
“When the rubbish is collected and the codes are seen, I will get reward points to exchange for small gifts and even some money,” a local man said. “It’s really creative and encouraging.”
This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing. The capital of China has joined a list of cities in the country that take action to support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to punish someone for not sorting rubbish correctly.
China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried(填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills(填埋场) take up a lot of land and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills and air pollution.
What’s more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring economic benefits(利益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be
reused to make about 850kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 per cent of water. Because of their benefits, some countries have successfully developed sorting systems.
In Australia, every family is provided with three rubbish bins—the red lid(盖子) bin for “general waste” like food and plastic bags, the yellow lid bin for “recycling” like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for “green waste” such as grass and leaves. In the streets, the bins are printed with pictures of the things that are allowed inside. It makes recycling quite easy.

The teachers are worried that young children are becoming too interested in smartphones or computers and are losing their ability to make simple things with hands. 1
“I have spoken to a number of teachers. They care about the increasing numbers of young pupils who can play with computers or phones but have little or no skills to make things. 2 But their parents are proud of their ability to use a computer or a smartphone,” said Colin Kinney, a teacher.
Instead of playing with other children on weekends and after school, kids choose to stay indoors and quietly play on a tablet (平板电脑). 3 It can become much harder for them to learn how to make friends at an old age.
How can a child be able to succeed if he doesn’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop his painting skills? 4 However, it is still very important for children to have basic social skills so that they can live on as they get older.

Henry is going through a very hard time. His wife has just passed away. He feels that life without her is meaningless. For months, Henry sits in his house, doing nothing. His family try to encourage him to do new things and enjoy life, but they’re not successful.
Henry’s neighbor, an old woman named Lisa, sees him from her yard one day. She has not seen him outside for a long time! She asks him to come closer to the fence next to her house.
“Hello, Henry! Just look at this fence. It is falling apart. You are a strong man. Can you help me fix this fence?” Lisa asks.
Henry is angry inside. He is the one who needs help right now. He thinks the old lady is being kind of rude. But she is too old to fix the fence herself, so he agrees.
Henry works on the fence for days. Lisa brings him lemonade while he works. When he finishes, she thanks him. Henry smiles for the first time in months.
“What a wonderful job! Could you please paint it for me?” Lisa says to him.
Henry cannot believe she is asking for more help. Doesn’t she know how sad he is? But because he respects her, he agrees. He works hard and paints the fence in the hot sun, but Lisa’s lemonade and encouragement are helpful. As their neighbors pass by, they all praise Henry for the beautiful job he has done.
