Aunt Linda's advice page
Dear Jay,
We always think it is OK to trust those closest to us, but it hurts even more when we realize we can't.
But I have to say that you also did something wrong When you told your friend the thing, you might just be letting off steam. It was understandable in that situation (情况), but we should always think carefully before we say something.
Here's what you need to do. Firstly, apologize to your teammate. If you want to win more basketball games, you need to work together, and that means communicating with each other clearly and solving problems together.
Next, talk to your friend. Tell your friend you're angry with him for what he has done. If you didn't care about him, you would just go your own way.
Lastly, think about your own behaviour (行为). Don't say too much when you' re angry! Take a deep breath, calm down, and always remember: think first, and speak later.
Good luck!

The twin comedians (喜剧演员) Gao Chao and Gao Yue got third place in a comedy sketch (小品) competition.
Growing up in Qingdao, Shandong Province, they first copied funny plays from China’s most popular TV show, the Spring Festival Gala (春晚). Gao Chao says, “We’ve always loved watching the comedy parts of the Gala since we were kids. When we were in first grade, our mother started encouraging us to copy the funny actors. We’d act out these plays during family gatherings on special holidays.” After that, the brothers competed in school talent shows and put on local performances.

Researchers have shown that it seems natural for dogs to be able to understand and communicate with humans. The ability is not common among animals but important to humans.
“Before scientists look for genes (基因) that may have turned dogs into our friends, they need to make sure they’re there first. For over 20 years, scientists have known that dogs understand the meaning behind a gesture. But it’s been unclear whether dogs have this ability just by staying with us, or whether it’s in their genes. I think the study showed that,” says Heidi Parker, a scientist at a U.S. university.
The study included three tests. First, the researchers did a pointing experiment. They put young dogs between two cups, and one of the cups had food. Then, they pointed to the cup with food. The puppies (小狗) understood the gesture more than two-thirds of the time just like the adult dogs. “But after trying many times, the puppies didn’t get any better, showing they hadn’t learned the behaviour (行为),” Parker says.
In the second test, a researcher used the “puppy talk”: “Hey puppy, look at you! You’re such a good puppy.” Then the dogs looked at the person for about 6 seconds. Such eye contact is not common among animals, but it’s a big part of how dogs connect with people.
In the final test, the researchers taught the puppies to find food in a box, and then they put a cover on it. Adult dogs usually give up after a few seconds and turn to humans for help. However, the puppies seldom asked the researchers for help. “Puppies seem to understand when receiving information from humans,” Parker says, “but they may not yet know that they can get help from us.”
( ) 21. What did the researchers find according to Paragraph 1?
A. Dogs are smarter than other animals.
B. Dogs are important to humans and other animals.
C. Dogs need special training to understand humans.
D. Dogs may be born to know some human words and gestures.
( ) 22. What does the writer mainly want to tell us about the study in Paragraph 2?
A. The purpose of it. B. The result of it.
C. The way to do it. D. The time to do it.
( ) 23. How did the puppies answer the researcher’s “puppy talk”?
A. By barking loudly.
B. By pointing to a cup.
C. By looking at the researcher.
D. By running away quickly.
( ) 24. What does the third test show?
A. Puppies are not interested in finding food.
B. Puppies do not understand human words.
C. Adult dogs can find food by themselves.
D. Puppies hardly ask humans for help when solving problems.
( ) 25. Why did the writer write this passage?
A. To tell us about the daily lives of dogs.
B. To encourage people to keep dogs as pets.
C. To argue that adult dogs are smarter than puppies.
D. To show the results of a scientific study on dogs’ abilities.
