Walking on the beach of Dongshan Island in Fujian, many visitors immerse(沉浸) themselves in a poetic world, enjoying discovering interesting children’s poems on the seaside rocks.
These poems come from the Dongshan Island International Children’s Poetry Beach Project. Qiu Zhijie, vice-president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, who started the project, says, “I hope to create a world cultural heritage(遗产) here through the power of art. Many years from now, when we are no longer here, this poetry beach will still remain.”
Since last September, the project has been inviting children from around the world to submit (提交) their poetry, with chosen works being carved(刻) on the island’s rocks. It has received more than 5,000 submissions from children under the age of 16. 500 poems were chosen to be carved onto the rocks. About 400 poems have been completed since the beginning of 2024.
In China, carving poems on rocks has long been a cultural tradition. This project, however, gives the honor to children, who are “natural poets” in Qiu’s eyes. He says, “They use simple and imaginative words to describe the world.”
Song Yumo, a mother of a 10-year-old girl from Shenzhen in Guangdong, took her daughter to visit the poetry beach on June 1, 2024. A poem written by one of her daughter’s classmates was carved on a rock. “After seeing the rocks, my daughter told me that she would have her poetry carved on rocks here one day,” says Song, adding that her daughter has been writing poems for months.
“Our project is not just an art festival; it is also a long-term educational and community-building activity. Through poetry and art, we want to inspire the creativity of children and encourage community development,” says Qiu. Now, plans are underway to set up a poetry library on the island.
( )9. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By describing a scene. D. By expressing a feeling.
( )10. What can we learn about SongYumo’s daughter?
A. She was 10 when her poem was carved on a rock.
B. She visited the poetry beach with her classmates.
C. She is looking forward to carving poems on rocks.
D. She has shown strong interest in writing poems.
( )11. What is the next plan for the project?
A. Holding an art festival.
B. Building a poetry library.
C. Carving more poems on rocks.
D. Inviting more children to submit poems.
( )12. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How to become better at writing poems
B. Dongshan Island in Fujian

Chicken wings are a common finger food at restaurants, bars, and parties in the US.However, they haven’t always been as beloved as they are today.
①
Before the 1960s, chicken wings were a cheap cut of meat that rarely (很少) appeared on restaurant menus. In the American South, fried chicken was just a traditional dish for events and Sunday lunches. And often, chicken wings were largely recycled into soup.
②
This began to change when Teressa Bellissimo, the owner of Anchor Bar, needed a quick snack for her son Dominic and his friends one evening in1964. She quickly deep fried chicken wings and added hot sauce and butter. The wings were such a hit that she added them to the bar menu the next morning as “Buffalo wings”.
③
With the success of Buffalo wings at the Anchor Bar, Bellissimo’s son and the bar’s hot sauce seller, Dick Winger, traveled around the country. They promoted (推销) the wing recipe and Winger’s hot sauce to restaurants. Buffalo wings paired well with many types of beer, so beer sales rocketed with wings on the menu. Some restaurants accepted the idea, but it was when fast food restaurant chains added wings to their menu that they became a national food.
④
Although Buffalo remains the most popular wing flavor(味道), people have hundreds of choices today. BBQ, Cajun, and sweet chili are top choices. Eating good food and getting a lot of exercise are important for staying healthy. Getting enough sleep is important, too.
Your body needs sleep for many reasons. It needs to take a rest from all the activities it has done during the day.Your brain needs a rest, too. You may not grow as well and you may get sick more easily without enough sleep.
You have a “24-hour clock” inside your body that tells you when to be awake and when to go to sleep. This clock is controlled by your brain. Blue light that comes from the sun tells your brain to keep you awake during the day. Then you can do all the things that you need to do. When there is no blue light at night, the brain tells the body it is time to go to sleep.
There are many things that stop the brain from telling your body when it is time to sleep. One of these is blue light at night. People spend much time looking at screens on computers or smartphones that give off blue light. If you look at them at night, the blue light can trick your body into thinking it is daytime. Then it is harder to go to sleep and stay asleep.
What are some things that you can do to get a good night’s sleep? Experts say that you should not look at screens that give off blue light for at least one hour before going to sleep. Two to three hours is better. If you need to do something to fall asleep, it is better to read a book. Also, keep your bedroom as dark as you can. This will help your brain know it is time to sleep.
41. List two ways of keeping healthy according to the passage.
42. What can blue light from the sun do?
43. What does our brain tell us to do when there’s no blue light at night?
44. What can you do to get a good night's sleep? Write 30 words or more.
