John Nelson, 92, grew up in Michigan and volunteered for the army in 1945. The 18-year-old managed to get accepted despite being colorblind. He landed on the island of Iwo Jima on the first day of the American attack to take the island from the Japanese. Nelson fought day and night for ten days before receiving a serious wound to his right arm. The other seven men in his squadron (中队) all died. American losses included 5900 dead and 17,400 wounded.
Nelson saw the American flag being raised on Mount Suribachi after the island was taken by the American forces. The arm would continue to trouble him for the rest of his life. Suffering from anxiety and flashbacks, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (创伤后应激障碍).
Al Elders was a Grandville farm boy. He joined the Navy and was stationed in Guam when the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, ended the war with Japan.
War often develops lasting friendships. But for the two World War II veterans (老兵) living at Sunset Manor in Jenison, their friendship didn’t begin until about a year and a half ago. One day, Elders noticed a man sitting at a cafeteria in Sunset Village, and that was Nelson. Seeing his Marine cap, Elders thought they would have something to talk about. And they did. The war in the Pacific is a common bond.
The two men later worked together to serve other residents at Sunset Manor. Nelson began detailing cars during good weather and cleaning streets in the winter. Elders became his advertising manager. They donated most of their income to the Wounded Warrior Project. Nelson is less mobile now and is in care at Sunset. Elders continues to visit and encourage his friend. A friend of Elders’ who traveled to Iwo Jima brought back a jar filled with sand from the rocky island. Elders sent the gift and his own wartime collections to the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park.
24. What can we know about John Nelson?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm (算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings (隆隆声) in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (Tex Net). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau Tex Net has 300 earthquake stations and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
28. How does the AI forecast earthquakes?
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
29. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3?
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
30. What does the follow-up research focus on?
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
31. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology?
A. Stable but outdated. B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical. D. Pioneering and promising.

As AI art generators (生成器) take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some wrinkles to iron out, which means there are indeed flaws to consider alongside the incredible artwork a good artificial intelligence can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and emotion, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s prompt to datasets, and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that the AI is driven by commands instead of an emotional desire to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why? Scarcity — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things? And if an artist puts AI masterpieces up for sale, what should the price be?
AI art involves a program mimicking (模仿) the work of existing artists to create a new piece according to the request of a human. But who made the artwork the machine or its user? And can the original artists sue for copyright (版权) violation? Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can tackle the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize?
32. What does the underlined word “flaws” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Benefits. B. Advances. C. Weaknesses. D. Standards.
33. How is AI art different from human art?
A. It is the product of experience.
B It costs less money to produce.
C. It combines different styles of work.
D. It is not a mirror of humans’ emotions.
34. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in the third paragraph?
A. To prove the popularity of classic artworks.
B. To present the potential trouble with the value of AI art.
C. To show the advantages of AI painters over human artists.
D. To introduce a new way of preserving art masterpieces.
35. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. AI art promotes the sale of artistic products.
B. AI art makes copyright issues more complicated.
C. Artists can create more works with the help of AI.
D. There will be fierce competition in the art industry.

But who made the artwork, the machine or its user? And can the original artists sue for copyright (版权) violation? Such questions complicate the merging of artificial intelligence and the art industry, while fueling arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can tackle the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize?
32. What does the underlined word “flaws” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Benefits. B. Advances. C. Weaknesses. D. Standards.
33. How is AI art different from human art?
A. It is the product of experience.
B. It costs less money to produce.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. B

【答案】参考范文一
“War and Peace” is a classic topic. While war destroys lives and spreads disagreement, peace promotes growth and encourages unity.
The Second World War, with its extensive destruction, teaches me the importance of understanding between nations. The ruin brought by war serves as a cruel reminder that war is a terrible failure of humanity’s duty to preserve life. The real stories and vivid memories of survivors leave a lasting impression on me, reminding me to do my part to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As students, we should remember the horrors of war and cherish the peace we have now. Let’s work collectively toward cooperation rather than conflict.
参考范文二
War and peace shape humanity’s destiny. War destroys lives and shatters hope, while peace rebuilds trust and creates harmony. History has repeatedly shown that violence only deepens wounds, never healing them.
A tragic example is World War II. It caused around 70 million deaths, destroyed countless cities, and left lasting scars. However, it also inspired global unity, leading to the establishment of the United Nations to prevent future conflicts.
Therefore, let us cherish peace. Every small action matters: rejecting hatred, embracing dialogue, and protecting the innocent. Together, we can honor history’s lessons and build a future where war exists only in textbooks. Peace begins with you and me.

【答案】Para 1:
A few months ago, Uncle Ed came up with a good idea and bought a robotic dog for Grandma Agnes. It has soft fur and barks when it senses motion nearby. Grandma quickly adopted the dog as her new Snoopy. Her condition has led her to believe that he is an animal and not a robot. She got used to Snoopy's barks and regarded them as requests for food or a nap. The food disappearing every night helped convince Grandma that Snoopy was a real dog. We found from the camera that the neighbor cat climbed over the fence and ate all the dog food.
Para 2:
Everyone in our family is pleased that Grandma Agnes has been so kind to Snoopy. She would pet him gently and carefully prepare food and water for him. Once, when the dog didn't move, eat and bark, she anxiously phoned Uncle Ed. She was afraid Snoopy was ill, Uncle Ed found he just needed changing battery. Our family is grateful that the robotic dog has brought Grandma Agnes companionship and someone to love. It's beautiful that her love of dogs can continue through this time in her life.
