Maxtop backpack
If what you’re after in a backpack is a lot of space, then this bag will be the one for you. It comes with metal zippers and a USB port, plus it can be folded up when not in use. It also has a D-ring for you to hang a key or other items if desired.

Ben was eleven years old when he spotted his neighbour, Julie, working in her garden. He popped his head over the fence, and said to her, “I’ve seen you’re very good with a lawn mower (割草机) and gardening tools. The hedge (树篱) over the pathway near here has become so overgrown that I am planning to cut it back myself. Would you like to help out?”
Julie loved the idea of helping Ben and their community. They agreed to cut the hedge the following Sunday. Ben’s brother Josh, aged 8 at the time, also came along to help. All three of them tackled away at it until they reduced it.
They posted photos of their handiwork on “Our Malmesbury”, their local Facebook Group. The community reaction was amazing. The comments and reactions just kept on coming. The whole town of Malmesbury seemed to embrace their team spirit and felt inspired to follow their lead. Manypeople raised their hands to volunteer and do more to keep their town tidy. With many willing hands, their town has transformed. Before, the town looked a bit run down, but now, the place looks cleaner and tidier.
To keep the projects going, Ben created a Facebook page and website to support their projects. Their Facebook Page “Helping The Community Of Malmesbury” currently sits at 669 members and is a place for all the locals to share what litter picking and cleaning up they have been up to. Ben also managed to sort funding through local businesses and associations. The funding has helped them obtain trees, plants, tools, and gardening equipment. When community members plan a clean-up, they can contact them via the website to access any tools and equipment they need to complete a project.
Ben is so pleased that 6 years later, the clean up campaign is still in full-swing. He has just been so overwhelmed with the support over the years that he cannot thank the community enough. Their mission will not stop.
4. What did Ben invite Julie to do?
A. Mow the lawn. B. Cut the hedge. C. Repair the fence. D. Help the neighbor.
5. What did the community do after seeing their post?
A. They cleaned their town. B. They shared more photos.
C. They embraced each other. D. They stood by doing nothing.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

Elon Musk has offered a prize of $100m for the best carbon capture (碳捕捉) proposal. It can save his committee a lot of time. The money should go to Peter Wohlleben, whose book The Hidden Life ofTrees was an encouraging bestseller of 2015. Wohlleben’s idea is this: do nothing about trees. Stop toying with them, thinking that we can deal with climate change better than nature. If we don’t, our Rome will burn.
The Hidden Life of Trees argued that trees are social. It shows that they can be our rescuer. But it’s terribly hard to let ourselves be saved. We think we can be the authors of our own rescue. Of course, there are things we could and should be doing, but in terms of forestry practice, often what’s considered as part of the solution is part of the problem.
Anyone who has planted a tree in their garden knows that it has a far-reaching effect — it makes your garden cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Forests cool by transpiring (蒸发). If there’s no water, there’s no cooling. Drought can kill trees fast, but trees have many ways of dealing with it, and Wohlleben sets them out. As a species, we have survived many climatic changes by changing our behavior — and that’s how trees survive, too. Trees learn from their past harms and produce younger ones programmed with those lessons. They change the rate at which they feed themselves with sugar solution through root networks.
Forests can take in greenhouse gases effectively as long as they live. Cut them down and burn them and you’ re letting off carbon dioxide not just from the wood, but also from the forest floor. Broadleaf trees are not “harvest-ready” at 200 years: they are teenagers. We must interrogate comforting expressions such as “renewable energy”, and learn the real cost of our toilet paper.
If we don’t learn to do nothing about trees, they will eventually be alone anyway — but without us Wohlleben brilliantly and readably shows us how urgent and how hard it is to do nothing.
8. What’s suggested in the book?
A. Using renewable energy. B. Leaving trees alone.
C. Dealing with climate change. D. Changing forestry species.
9. What might happen if we keep toying with trees?
A. We will be our own rescuer. B. We will be alone without trees.
C. Our world will be destroyed. D. The capital city of Italy will burn.
10. How do trees survive drought?
A. They stop absorbing water. B. They lose all their leaves.
C. They get help from humans. D. They slow down their growth.
11. What does the underlined word “interrogate” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Try. B. Explain. C. Question. D. Appreciate.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要围绕《树木的隐藏生活》这本书展开,介绍书中关于树木的观点,强调人类应让树木自然生长,过度干预可能带来危害。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Wohlleben’s idea is this: do nothing about trees. Stop toying with them, thinking that we can deal with climate change better than nature. If we don’t, our Rome will burn.(沃尔勒本的观点是这样的:对于树木,我们无需采取任何行动。不要去干预它们,不要妄想我们能比大自然更好地应对气候变化。如果我们不这样做,我们的罗马将会被焚毁)”可知,书中建议让树木自然生长,不要去干预它们,故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“If we don’t, our Rome will burn.(如果我们不这样做, 我们的罗马会被焚毁)”以及最后一段“If we don’t learn to do nothing about trees, they will eventually be alone anyway — but without us Wohlleben brilliantly and readably shows us how urgent and how hard it is to do nothing.(如果我们不学会对树木采取“什么都不做”的态度,那么树木最终还是会孤立无援——但沃勒莱本却以精彩且通俗易懂的方式向我们展示了,不去做任何事情是多么紧迫,又是多么艰难)”可知,如果我们一直摆弄树木,不尊重自然规律,最终世界会遭到破坏,人类也将面临灾难。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Trees learn from their past harms and produce younger ones programmed with those lessons. They change the rate at which they feed themselves with sugar solution through root networks.(树木会从过去的伤害中吸取教训,并培育出具有这些教训的“后代”。它们还会通过根系网络调整自身摄取糖液的速度)”可推断,在干旱时,树木通过改变自身的生长方式,比如减缓吸收营养的速度,也就是减缓生长来应对,故选D。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Cut them down and burn them and you’ re letting off carbon dioxide not just from the wood, but also from the forest floor. Broadleaf trees are not “harvest-ready” at 200 years: they are teenagers.(将它们砍倒并焚烧掉,这样不仅会释放出木材中的二氧化碳,还会释放出森林地面的二氧化碳。阔叶树在 200 年后才具备“可采伐”状态:它们还只是“青少年”阶段)”以及“renewable energy (可再生能源)”可知,这种说法并不像表面看起来那么简单,我们需要重新审视、质疑它的真正含义。C 选项“Question (质疑)”符合文意。故选C。
D
The emergence of de-inking printers represents an advancement of printing technology and paper recycling, addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. For decades, conventional printing processes have been linked to substantial paper waste, with millions of tons of paper being consumed annually-often used just once before being thrown away.
The innovative de-inking printer operates through a combination of advanced technologies. Using an advanced sensor system, it first identifies the presence of ink on the surface of the paper. Subsequently, a high-intensity laser (激光) is precisely directed to target and vaporize (汽化) ink effectively, removing them without causing any damage to the paper fibers.
One of the most remarkable advantages of this technology lies in its potential to reduce overall paper consumption. By enabling the reuse of printed materials through effective ink removal, it significantly reduces the demand for newly produced paper. This shift not only preserves natural resources but also plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions associated with the paper production.
From an economic perspective (角度), the adoption of de-inking printers presents long-term financial advantages. Although the initial investment in purchasing and installing the printer may be relatively high, the long-term savings from reduced paper and ink purchases can be substantial.
However, the widespread adoption of de-inking printers is not without its challenges. The technology requires further improvements to enhance de-inking efficiency and ensure that the quality of recycled paper meets industry standards. Additionally, there exists a significant barrier in terms of user acceptance: many individuals and organizations remain accustomed to using new paper and may be reluctant to recycled alternatives, even when they are of comparable quality.
In conclusion, the de-inking printer stands as a ray of hope for achieving a more sustainable future within the printing industry. With continued technological advancements and growing environmental awareness, this technology has the potential to transform the industry, contributing to a more eco-friendly and resource-efficient world.
12. What is the de-inking printer aimed at?
A. Recycling the used ink. B. Producing recyclable paper.
C. Improving the printing speed. D. Reducing the waste of resources.
13. How does the de-inking printer remove ink from paper?
A. By adding chemicals into the ink. B. By combining sensors and lasers.
C. By converting paper into new materials. D. By using laser to burn letters on the paper.
14. What blocks the broad application of de-inking printer?
A. It can only be used with special ink.
B. It is too large to be used in most offices.
C. People are unwilling to use recycled paper.
D. Users find it complex to understand.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards de-inking printer?
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Negative.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

My Unforgettable Dragon Boat Festival
Recently, my Chinese friend Li Hua invited me to celebrate the Dragon BoatFestival, which is a traditional Chinese festival falling on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in honor of Qu Yuan.
During the festival, excitement filled the air. Li Hua’s mom soaked glutinous rice, and his grandmother prepared bamboo leaves. When making zongzi, I was clumsy at first, but with their patient help, I managed to wrap a few. Later, we watched dragon boat races. Drums beat, teams paddled fast, and boats flew across the water. Everyone around us was shouting and cheering, and I couldn’t help joining them, which was so thrilling!
What an unforgettable experience! Not only did I felt the warmth of Chinese family, but also gain a deep insight into traditional Chinese culture. I’m looking forward to more cultural adventures here!

One day Albert found a baby bird lying on the ground, squawking (叫喊) for help. Feeling sad for the bird, Albert petted it gently and wanted to help it, but he didn’t know how since he was just 7 years old. So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, Albert dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, Albert immediately offered to care for the bird.
Albert named his new friend “Lucky”. He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest for the bird. Then, he put the nest beside his bed. Albert and the bird were sleeping together and living together. Soon they became close friends. Albert always told it about his experiences in school and his secrets. Lucky, an extremely patient audience, usually responded to him with a few nods and chirps (叽叽喳喳声). Albert’s parents also loved Lucky. They regarded it as a family member.
In the course of time, Lucky gradually recovered and started to hop (脚跳) and jump a little bit and exercise its wings. That made everyone happier. Soon it would be able to fly. How wonderful!
But what then? Albert became thoughtful and started to think. “If Lucky started to fly, it could simply fly away one day.” But that would not happen. Albert loved his friend so much that he couldn’t imagine parting with it. He wondered, “I should surely stay with Lucky forever. But how? Keep the windows closed all the time? That was not practical.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then, he bought a small cage and kept Lucky in it. In the beginning, Lucky seemed fine inside it. He believed he had made the right choice to keep Lucky close and secure. However, as time passed, things took a turn for the worse. After a fully recovery, Lucky wanted to spread its wings and fly in the sky. When all its attempts failed, what Lucky could do was sitting inside the little cage and squawking sadly. Several days later, Lucky refused to eat and drink. Worried and confused, he didn’t know what to do about it.
Knowing the bad situation, Albert’s parents decided to help Lucky and their son. They told their son, “If you really love Lucky, you should think of how to make it happy.” After careful consideration, Albert opened both his heart and the cage. Lucky was released and flew away. Two weeks later, a wonderful thing happened: Lucky returned, flying around Albert and chirped happily, seeming to say thanks to him. This had happened from time to time since then. Instead of losing a forced friend, Albert had made a permanent one.

A. Try. B. Explain. C. Question. D. Appreciate.
