She has attended 12 schools in 12 years. She was used to the teasing of students at a dozen schools who labeled her as “different”. “I have felt the anger at having to catch up in school… I was bullied because they knew I was poor, different, and read too much,” she wrote in her college essays. However, academics proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. Khadijah was in third grade when she first realized the power of test scores, placing in the 99th percentile (百分位数) on a state exam — that is, only 1% of students across the country tested better than she did. Her teachers marked the 9-year-old as gifted, a special category that Khadijah, even at that early age, promised to keep. “I still remember that exact number,” Khadijah said. And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to stay, regardless of where her mother moved. Graduation was not far off and she needed strong college letters of recommendation from teachers who were familiar with her work. This decision meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a. m. and not getting home until 11 p. m. She kept her grade-point average at just below a 4.0 while participating in the Academic Decathlon (十项全能), the debate team and leading the school’s track and field team. Her hard work paid off when she poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application — and was accepted. Now as a successful student at Harvard, Khadijah continues to use the lessons of her extraordinary life to help and inspire other students. 24.What did some of Khadijah’s classmates think of her? A.She was optimistic. B.She was distinctive. C.She was distinguished. D.She was considerate. 25.What helped Khadijah to gain confidence? A.Her teacher paid special attention to her. B.She was marked by her classmates as gifted. C.She received recognition for her debating skills. D.Her score was better than 99% of others on a national test. 26.Why did Khadijah determine to stay at Jefferson High School? A.She had to stay where her mother moved. B.She was tired of keep moving from place to place. C.She wanted to participate in the Academic Decathlon. D.She wanted to make preparations for applying to universities. 27.What can we learn from Khadijah’s story? A.Actions speak louder than words. B.Good things come to those who wait. C.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D.Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. 根据文章第一段中“She was used to the teasing of students at a dozen schools who labeled her as “different”.(她习惯了来自十几个学校的同学的嘲笑,他们称她为“与众不同的人”)”可知,同学们认为她与众不同,故选B。 25. 根据文章第二段中“Khadijah was in third grade when she first realized the power of test scores, placing in the 99th percentile (百分位数) on a state exam — that is, only 1% of students across the country tested better than she did.(Khadijah 在三年级时第一次意识到考试分数的力量,在一次州级考试中,她的成绩达到了第99百分位——也就是说,全国只有1%的学生比她表现得更好)”可知,她在考试中表现优异,超过99%的学生,因此获得了自信。故选D。 26. 根据文章第三段中“And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to stay, regardless of where her mother moved. A male right whale with mud on its head, indicating it had been feeding at the bottom, came up to breathe and rest. Just before diving again, it let out a huge mass of poop(粪便). The water was filled with poop that looked like red floating bricks and had a strong, unpleasant smell. If it got on your clothes, you’d have to discard them as it couldn’t be washed out. This initial encounter later inspired me to conduct global search for whale poop, taking me from Iceland to Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii. Right whale poop has a particularly strong and awful smell, but I’ve come to appreciate it. Whale poop provides valuable insights. It shows what whales eat, their hormones, if they’re ready to reproduce, how stressed they are, what’s in their gut(内脏), and their family tree. It also helps us assess the level of mercury and pollution in the ocean. This experience set the path for my research career. Two years after seeing whale poop for the first time, I took an ocean ecology class and learned about the biological pump. Phytoplankton(浮游植物)grows near the ocean surface and through the food chain, nutrients can sink to the deep sea. However, I realized that right whales, which feed at depth and poop at the surface, likely bring nutrients like iron and so on back up. This led to the concept of the “whale pump”, which does the opposite of the biological pump by pumping nutrients back to the surface. These nutrients can be absorbed by phytoplankton and flow through the ocean food chain. This is important because some people in Japan, Norway, and Iceland think whales eat “our fish” and cause fish numbers to drop. The whale pump shows that the relationship is more complex and that whales might actually increase fish populations. Whale poop not only helps us understand the present ocean but also gives us a look into the past when there were more whales. Restoring whales and their nutrient pathways could help make the ocean more diverse. 28.What does the underlined word “discard” in paragraph 1 mean? A.Abandon. B.Wash. C.Keep. D.Appreciate. 29.Why does the author appreciate whale poop? A.It provides a remarkable sight. B.It makes the author travel a lot. C.It looks like red floating bricks. D.It makes precious insights available. 30.What is the effect of the “whale pump”? A.Nutrients float to the surface. B.Fisheries experience a decline. C.The ocean food chain is threatened. D.The environment is polluted severely. 31.What is the purpose of the text? A.To describe the abnormal behavior of right whales. B.To explain the ecological importance of whale poop. C.To argue against the idea that whales harm fisheries. D.To discuss how we can understand the present ocean. 【答案】28.A 29.D 30.A 31.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,讲述了鲸鱼粪便的生态重要性。作者通过自身研究经历,说明鲸鱼粪便如何提供宝贵信息,促进海洋生态循环,并反驳了鲸鱼导致鱼类减少的观点,强调恢复鲸鱼数量对海洋多样性的积极意义。 28.词句猜测题。根据第一段“The water was filled with poop that looked like red floating bricks and had a strong, unpleasant smell. If it got on your clothes, you’d have to discard them as it couldn’t be washed out(水里布满了看起来像红色漂浮砖块的粪便,且散发着强烈、难闻的气味。如果它沾到你的衣服上,你就得把衣服……,因为它洗不掉)”可知,如果像红色漂浮砖块的粪便沾到你的衣服上,它是洗不掉的,所以衣服只能扔掉,可推理出“discard”在上下文中指因无法清洗而“丢弃”衣物,故选A。 29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Right whale poop has a particularly strong and awful smell, but I’ve come to appreciate it. Whale poop provides valuable insights. It shows what whales eat, their hormones, if they’re ready to reproduce, how stressed they are, what’s in their gut(内脏), and their family tree. It also helps us assess the level of mercury and pollution in the ocean(座头鲸的粪便气味尤其强烈且令人不适,但我渐渐学会了欣赏它。鲸粪提供了宝贵的研究信息。它能显示鲸鱼的饮食习惯、它们的激素水平、是否准备繁殖、它们的压力程度、它们肠道里的情况以及它们的家族谱系。此外,它还有助于我们评估海洋中的汞含量和污染程度)”可知,作者重视鲸鱼粪便是因为它能提供珍贵的研究数据,故选D。 30.细节理解题。根据第三段“This led to the concept of the “whale pump”, which does the opposite of the biological pump by pumping nutrients back to the surface(这引出了“鲸泵”的概念,它与生物泵的作用相反,将营养物质泵回到海洋表面)”可知,鲸鱼泵的作用是将营养物质带到海洋表面,故选A。 31.推理判断题。根据第一段“A male right whale with mud on its head, indicating it had been feeding at the bottom, came up to breathe and rest. Just before diving again, it let out a huge mass of poop(粪便). The water was filled with poop that looked like red floating bricks and had a strong, unpleasant smell.(一头露脊鲸头部沾满淤泥,表明它刚刚在海底觅食,它游上来呼吸并休息。就在它再次潜入水中之前,排泄出了一大团粪便。水中布满了看起来像红色漂浮砖块的粪便,散发着强烈且难闻的气味)”、第二段“Right whale poop has a particularly strong and awful smell, but I’ve come to appreciate it. Whale poop provides valuable insights. It shows what whales eat, their hormones, if they’re ready to reproduce, how stressed they are, what’s in their gut(内脏), and their family tree. It also helps us assess the level of mercury and pollution in the ocean(座头鲸的粪便气味尤其强烈且令人不适,但我渐渐学会了欣赏它。鲸粪提供了宝贵的研究信息。它能显示鲸鱼的饮食习惯、它们的激素水平、是否准备繁殖、它们的压力程度、它们肠道里的情况以及它们的家族谱系。此外,它还有助于我们评估海洋中的汞含量和污染程度)”、第三段“This led to the concept of the “whale pump”, which does the opposite of the biological pump by pumping nutrients back to the surface(这引出了“鲸泵”的概念,它与生物泵的作用相反,将营养物质泵回到海洋表面)”以及最后一段“Whale poop not only helps us understand the present ocean but also gives us a look into the past when there were more whales. Restoring whales and their nutrient pathways could help make the ocean more diverse(鲸粪不仅有助于我们了解如今的海洋,还能让我们回顾过去鲸鱼数量更多的时代。恢复鲸鱼数量及其营养循环路径,可使海洋变得更加多样化)”可知,文章围绕鲸鱼粪便的生态作用展开,包括其研究价值、促进营养循环的“鲸鱼泵”机制及对海洋多样性的意义,可推理出本文的写作目的是解释鲸鱼粪便的生态重要性,故选B。 D When preparing for a test, most students assume it’s best to simply study the material and try to memorize as much of it as possible. Many tests seemingly reward rote (死记硬背) memorization. But what if students trained by testing themselves instead? Usually, studying is considered a safer bet; why risk producing wrong answers when you can just memorize the right one? Yet it turns out making errors early on can be more helpful for remembering information over time. Cognitive psychologists Henry Roddy Roediger and Jeff Karpicke conducted a study where they had hundreds of students memorize passages from a test-preparation book for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). One group memorized these passages by reading them repeatedly, while another group read the passages several times and then completed three tests. The results were surprising: the students who repeatedly studied the material initially performed better, but when they were tested again a week later, the students who tested themselves recalled over 60% of what they had learned, compared to only 40% for the group who repeatedly studied. The testing effect has since been confirmed in many studies under a range of conditions. Its value remains undoubted, but scientists are still debating why it has such a powerful effect on memory. The simplest explanation is that testing exposes our weaknesses. When we test our memories, we expose the weaknesses of existing neuronal (神经元的) connections in a way that ultimately strengthens what’s useful and removes what’s not, making the information we attempt to memorize more lasting and easier to recall. To maximize the benefits of the testing effect, it’s important to return to the same information in shorter sessions over several days instead of cramming (塞进) everything into a single night of intense studying. This allows your brain to consolidate the information and create stronger memories. In conclusion, testing is not just a tool for assessing your knowledge but also a powerful learning tool. By embracing errors and actively testing yourself, you can improve your learning and memory. So, instead of avoiding mistakes, embrace them as opportunities for growth and mastery. 32.What do we know about Henry and Jeff’s study? A.Self-testing works only in tasks of memorizing things. B.Those who repeatedly studied performed better later. C.Rote memorization doesn’t work well in the long run. D.The study focused mainly on how to prepare for TOFEL. 33.What happens to the brain when people test their memories? A.Additional neuronal connections in the brain are created. B.The brain processes new information at a higher speed. C.The weak connections between neurons are removed. D.Weak but useful neuronal connections become stronger. 34.What is an effective way to study according to paragraph 4? A.Avoiding making the same mistakes in tests. B.Studying everything intensely on a single night. C.Reviewing in shorter sessions over several days. D.Focusing on what is most likely to be on the test. 35.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Cramming for Exams: A Safer Bet for Success B.The Testing Effect: Why Practice Makes Perfect C.The Power of Testing: An Effective Approach to Learning D.The Secret of Learning: How Brains Process Information 【答案】32.C 33.D 34.C 35.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文主要讲述了测试效应作为一种有效的学习方法,通过自我测试可以提高记忆和学习效果。 32.细节理解题。根据第二段中“The results were surprising: the students who repeatedly studied the material initially performed better, but when they were tested again a week later, the students who tested themselves recalled over 60% of what they had learned, compared to only 40% for the group who repeatedly studied.”(结果是令人惊讶的:那些反复学习材料的学生一开始表现更好,但当他们一周后再次接受测试时,那些自我测试的学生回忆起了60%以上所学的内容,而反复学习的学生只回忆起了40%。)可知,死记硬背从长远来看效果并不好。故选C。 33.细节理解题。根据第三段的“When we test our memories, we expose the weaknesses of existing neuronal (神经元的) connections in a way that ultimately strengthens what’s useful and removes what’s not, making the information we attempt to memorize more lasting and easier to recall. (当我们测试自己的记忆力时,我们会以一种方式暴露现有神经元连接的弱点,这种方式最终会强化有用的连接,去除无用的连接,从而使我们试图记住的信息更加持久,也更容易回想起来。)”可知,测试记忆时,大脑会暴露并强化有用的神经元连接,同时去除无用的连接,由此可知,弱但有用的神经元连接被暴露并得到加强。故选D。 34.推理判断题。根据第四段的“To maximize the benefits of the testing effect, it’s important to return to the same information in shorter sessions over several days instead of cramming (塞进) everything into a single night of intense studying. (为了最大限度地发挥测试效果的益处,重要的是在几天内分多个较短的时段来复习同样的知识内容,而不是把所有东西都集中在一个晚上进行高强度的学习。)”可知,有效的学习方法是分几天进行短时间复习,而不是一晚上突击学习,由此可推知,在几天内分多次短时段复习材料是有效的学习方法。故选C。 35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Yet it turns out making errors early on can be more helpful for remembering information over time. (然而,事实证明,早期犯错从长远来看可能更有助于记忆信息。)”以及第三段中的“The testing effect has since been confirmed in many studies under a range of conditions. (测试效应已经在多种条件下通过许多研究得到了证实。)”可知,本文的核心在于探讨测试作为一种有效的学习工具的力量,而且测试对学习和记忆的强大效果,所以“测试的力量:一种有效的学习方法。”概括了全文的主题,是最佳标题。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action. The best possible one is under the care of an experienced mental health care provider. Still, if you are hoping to stop being paralyzed (麻痹) by anxiety and use this energy to fuel and improve your life, you can. 36 Set a goal. Goal-setting is one way to use your anxiety as fuel. Take notice of your anxious thoughts and worries. What are you most concerned about? 37 Instead of shaking in your boots, get down to developing a plan that allows you to overcome these fears. Challenge yourself regularly to build resilience. Think of your resilience to anxiety as a muscle. 38 Rather than avoiding those situations that cause anxiety, gradually expose yourself to them more often. When you do this, you will find that, over time, they lose their power. For instance, if you hate public speaking, you might benefit from signing up for a local Toastmasters club. Doing so will allow you to practice speaking in front of a group more often, which will reduce your anxiety. 39 Anxiety can feel like a live wire in your body. You can’t sit still or focus. Exercise is a great activity to make use of this spare energy. Exercise offers a host of benefits like fighting off illness and helping you manage weight. One of the benefits most helpful to you, however, is its ability to neutralize anxiety and improve your mood. Perform reality testing. You don’t have to become a slave to your anxious thoughts, giving them permission to get you all worked up. 40 Reality testing involves assessing a situation for errors in thinking. To assess the reality of this situation, you want to ask what evidence is there that says this is true. Did your friends actually call you lame? Are they avoiding you? A.What are your biggest fears? B.Put them to the test instead. C.Burn off nervous energy with physical activity. D.How can you deal with getting fired if it does happen? E.The more you use the muscle, the stronger it becomes. F.Just transform anxiety into action by using positive strategies. G.When you find yourself becoming anxious, check your thought patterns. 【答案】36.F 37.A 38.E 39.C 40.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章指出,认知行为疗法的主要目标之一是找到有效的方法将焦虑转化为有成效的行动。本文重点介绍了具体的策略。 36.由上文“One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action. It is the tale of Emily, a young woman adopted as a child, who grew up, showing selflessness. Emily was a spirited 25-year-old, with a heart as broad as the Lone Star State. She was adopted by the Smith family. From the moment Emily entered their lives, the Smiths have devoted themselves to providing her with a loving and stable home. They made sure she had a warm bed to sleep in every night, cooked delicious and nutritious meals for her every day. They encouraged her to pursue her hobbies and interests, whether it was painting, which the y would display proudly on the walls of their home, or playing the piano, for which they arranged lessons. Their love and care enveloped Emily as she grew up. Her bond with her adoptive mother, Susan, was particularly profound. “You’re my world, Emily,” Susan would often say, her eyes full of care and affection. In the spring of 2024, Susan was struck by a sudden and severe liver (肝) condition. The doctors in San Antoni o delivered the cruel news that a liver transplant (移植) was Susan’s only hope for survival. The family, desperate, began the search for a donor. “We have to find a match,” the doctor urged. However, among Susan’s immediate family, none were a match for her liver. "It's like we’re hitting a dead end,“Susan’s husband, Mark Smith, said sadly. Emily, unable to bear the thought of losing her mother, decided to get tested as a potential living donor. “Let me try,” she told her father with determination. The results were astonishing — she was a perfect match. But there was a catch. Emily had a chronic (慢性的) condition since childhood, and the doctors warned her that donating a part of her liver could put her in danger. “It’s too risky, Emily,” the doctor said. But Emily replied, “No matter what, I’m going to save my mom.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Emily told all this to her mom, Susan. —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— However, Emily insisted that her mom accept her liver donation. —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— 【答案】One possible version: Emily told all this to her mom, Susan. However, when Susan learnt that it would cause great harm to Emily’s body, she strongly refused to allow Emily to donate her liver. “I can’t lose you either,” Susan said, tears streaming down her face. She knew how much Emily had already overcome in her life and she didn’t want to be the cause of any more pain or hardship. She kept repeating that she would rather face her own fate than let Emily take such a huge risk. However, Emily insisted that her mom accept her liver donation. She sat down with Susan, saying, “Mom, you’ve been there for me through every up and down. You’ve given me life. I owe you everything. We can get through this together.” After days of heated discussions, Susan finally agreed. On a warm June morning, the surgery began. Emily’s family and friends gathered, praying and waiting anxiously. Against all odds, the surgery was a huge success. Emily’s liver was partially transplanted into Susan, giving her the gift of life. 词汇激活 行为类 ①拒绝:refuse/decline/reject ②克服:overcome/conquer ③坐下:sit down/take a seat/sit oneself down 情绪类 ①焦虑:anxiously/worried/uneasy ②苦难:hardship/suffering 【点睛】【高分句型1】However, when Susan learnt that it would cause great harm to Emily’s body, she strongly refused to allow Emily to donate her liver.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】She kept repeating that she would rather face her own fate than let Emily take such a huge risk.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绝密★考试结束前 2024-2025学年高二下学期期末模拟卷 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1.When will the speakers go to the festival? B As long as she can remember, Khadijah has floated from shelters to parks to motels along the West Coast with her mother, never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. C Thirty years ago, while working on a right whale research project in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, I witnessed a remarkable sight. D When preparing for a test, most students assume it’s best to simply study the material and try to memorize as much of it as possible. A.Cramming for Exams: A Safer Bet for Success B.The Testing Effect: Why Practice Makes Perfect C.The Power of Testing: An Effective Approach to Learning D.The Secret of Learning: How Brains Process Information 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 “Can we pick this one, Dad? ” my four-year-old daughter, Alicia, asks. I start 51 piano lessons at 41 years old with the idea that if she sees me 52 as I practice, she’ll understand that things don’t come easy, even for grown-ups. I know there’s going to be a time when I’ll 53 on the sideline cheering her on as she finds her own passions. I’m okay with this, and I’m hoping that by then she’ll carry the 54 of knowledge through life. My mother was visiting us a few months ago. Recalling his first cooperation with the Chinese theater professors in 2004, he said he was impressed by the actors’ makeups, costumes and their effort 56 (pass) the acting skills to their students. One professor explained, “In China, opera is an art 57 (require) lifelong devotion and the effect of the performance largely depends on the actors’ inner strength and acting skills.” Following Sommier’s suggestion on introducing Chinese 58 (classic) to the French audience, Beijing Vocational College of Opera and Arts(BVCOA) 59 (stage) a series of innovative and 60 (fascinate) performances in 2005.
