B I was at school, getting ready for a test. Suddenly someone shouted, “Today at 1:10 there will be auditions (试演) for a musical show.” My friends all jumped up in excitement and asked me, “Will you go, Rasleen?” Without much thought, I agreed. Even though musical shows weren’t really my thing, I wanted to be with my friends. At 1:10 p.m., there was a line outside the audition room. Standing in the line, I suddenly felt a little nervous. What if I wasn’t any good? I was taking a risk. Soon it was my turn. I said some lines (台词) from the musical show called Musicville and sang a bit. The teachers smiled at me and asked what kind of role I wanted to play. I felt like I had a chance, so I said, “A big role.” A week later, the list came out. I got the main role, Melody! I was really happy, but also realized how much work it would be. I was in almost all of the 13 scenes in the show and I had to memorize all my lines before the practice. Then in the following days, I stayed after school to practice. Two months later, we were all ready for the performance. We got to perform in front of our schoolmates, teachers and parents. When I saw their smiles, I felt very confident. That confidence stayed with me and made me feel braver. I felt like I could try more things. So I joined a basketball team, and I even joined a dance group. I became more and more active. I realized that by trying something new, I can have fun — even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone (舒适区). 4. Why did Rasleen decide to audition for the musical show? A. Is it because they are lazy? Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by Noah Webster (1758-1843). He was a teacher who reformed (改革) English to make American identity (特征) stronger. Linguists (语言学家) celebrate his birthday on October 16 every year. After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary, rather than rely on British dictionaries. He dropped the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like what they sounded. He used “subway” instead of British word “underground”. Some other examples are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”. Webster wasn’t shy about expressing his opinions. In defining (定义) preposterous (unreasonable), he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.” Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. He also added local words. His dictionary was widely used in schools. Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity (统一) and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom. “He was the creator of our language and the creator of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is working on a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.” 8. Which is NOT true about Webster’s dictionary? A. It has local words in it. B. It is a 70,000-word dictionary. C. All the words are spelled without “u”. D. Its words are in American-style spelling. 9. B. It helped to bring Americans together besides its cultural influence. C. It has no influence on the development of American English. D. It helped to make American English more useful than British English. 11. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. The development of the British English. B. American English is better than British English. C. Noah Webster added local words to the dictionary. D. Noah Webster wrote an American English dictionary and reformed English. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, “Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …” I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was? Surely everybody knew! At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, “Me too!” Then finally my dad spoke, “What! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It’s an absolutely useless expense (花费) …” Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn’t stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job. I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. “Take this. Don’t tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay?” she said softly. “Mom, how did you ... ?” I asked. “It’s from my own savings. Your father doesn’t know.” I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently. When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. In defining (定义) preposterous (unreasonable), he wrote: “A republican government in the hands of female is preposterous.” Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spelling in 1828. B. It helped to bring Americans together besides its cultural influence. C. It has no influence on the development of American English. D. It helped to make American English more useful than British English. 11. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. The development of the British English. B. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在以下位置作答。 Para1: One afternoon, I was in my dorm when a classmate told me that my father was waiting for me downstairs. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para2: I sat down and unwrapped (打开) the box. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One afternoon, I was in my dorm when a classmate told me that my father was waiting for me downstairs. I rushed out of the door, ran downstairs anxiously, and saw my father standing there. At the sight of me, he managed an embarrassed smile and handed me a box, saying, “Son, I bought this for you since I overheard that it’s an efficient device for study. You will treasure it and use it for a good purpose, won’t you? …” Swallowing the rest words, he just turned around and left for work hurriedly. Seeing him off, I dragged my legs to my dorm with the small box in hand. I sat down and unwrapped the box. Gasping in astonishment, I found a totally brand new MP3 inside. It was neatly packed and the price tag was still attached. I gazed at it for a while, tears in eyes. The tired faces and weathered hands of my parents appeared before my eyes. How could I repay them? After putting the MP3 away carefully, I headed for the classroom determinedly. I knew no matter what challenges I met, my parents would always be there for me with their deep love and wholehearted support. I also knew the progress I made in my study was the best present for them. 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲出去:rush out / burst out ②珍惜:treasure /value/ cherish ③拒绝:shake his head/decline/refuse politely 情绪类 ①尴尬的:embarrassed / uncomfortable/ awkward ②匆忙地:hurriedly/in a hurry 【点睛】[高分句型1] Seeing him off, I dragged my legs to my dorm with the small box in hand.(使用了现在分词Seeing和with复合结构充当伴随状语) [高分句型2] After putting the MP3 away carefully, I headed for the classroom determinedly.(使用了动名词putting充当介词after的宾语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
