When Ben Cheng, 63, finished a bicycle journey along the ancient Silk Road in June, she immediately began planning her next trip. Ben was a teacher who comes from Changchun, Jilin Province. She has cycled more than 100,000 kilometers over the last eight years.
“I have kept up all kinds of sports, such as swimming and mountain climbing, for many years,” she said. “After retirement (退休), I had more time for my interests and I found cycling to be a good choice.”
She began cycling in the Changchun suburbs (郊区) in 2013 after her retirement at 55. In May 2015, she started her first long journey—a trip around Bohai Bay. It took her 24 days to complete the 2,655—kilometer trip, and the success pushed her to do more.
In recent years, she has finished several long journeys across China, including a ride around Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province and other trips in Hainan Province and Taiwan.
Together with several other cycling lovers, Ben started the ancient Silk Road journey from Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, on May 21. She crossed the cities of Lanzhou, Wuwei, Jiuquan, Dunhuang and Jiayuguan in Gansu Province and finally arrived in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (自治区), on June 18.
“During the 3,000—km journey, I enjoyed the beautiful scenery (景色),” she said. “However, I also met difficulties, such as storms and terrible road conditions.”
“Luckily, I kept on and finally reached my journey’s end,” she said. “I hope more people will take cycling as an exercise. It is more friendly to environment.”

As people say, you can’t change the environment, but you can change your own. You can’t change the facts, but you can change attitudes. You can’t control other people, but you can be master of your own. You can’t do everything well, but you can be careful with everything. You can’t control the weather, but you can change your mood. You can’t choose what you look like, but you can show a smile.
One key to success lies in his or her mind. There are some difference between winners and losers. Winners always think troubles and difficulties are due to personal ability and experience. They would like to improve and develop in the right direction. While losers will blame on the opportunity, and the environment injustice (不公). They always complain, wait and give up.
In many cases, a humble (出身卑微的) person looks down upon his own. A person’s appearance and his family may not be mind. If he can’t deal with the mind, how can he deal with more difficult things? No matter what the situation is, a person’s attitude is very important. Emerson said, “A move towards their goals is always people who gave him the whole world to give way.” On the contrary, failure is not because we do not have the strength, but because we can’t stick to ourselves, and always follow others’ examples. We should believe the strength of mind, and now it’s up to you to make the final decision.
36. Although people can’t do everything well, they can choose to ________.
A be master of their own B. control other people
C. change the environment D. be careful with everything
37. The differences between winners and losers are ________.
A. their chances B. their families C. their minds D. their jobs
38. The meaning of the underlined phrase “blame on” in the passage “________.”
A. complain about B. think about C. worry about D. care about
39. What can we learn from Emerson's words?
A. It’s important to work quickly. B. We should always move forward.
C. It’s necessary to work for the world. D. We should give way to people.
40. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Believe the Power of Mind B. Follow Other’s Examples
C. Have Your Strength D. Improve the Environment
D
From lunch boxes and drinking bottles to furniture and clothes, plastic is used to make lots of everyday things. When these things are thrown away, some of them end up in the seas. The plastic takes hundreds of years to break down. Biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastics were invented to deal with this problem.
Biodegradable plastics can break down naturally, but the new problem is they can not break down completely in the sea. Instead, they break down into very small pieces called microplastics, which are often eaten by fish, birds and other animals. The microplastics are known to be harmful.
Recently, scientists have invented a new kind of plastic which could help solve this microplastic problem. It was created by researchers at the RIKEN Centre for Emergent Matter Science in Japan. Unlike other biodegradable plastics, the new plastic fully dissolves (溶解) in salty seawater. When the new plastic dissolves, it breaks up into the separate substances (物质). And then small living things in seawater can break them down completely. Studies have shown that the plastic can break down in a few hours in seawater, and in around 10 days in soil.
The new plastic has other advantages, too. It is not poisonous. When it is burned, the gas (气体) it produces won’t pollute the environment. The plastic can be made hard or shaped into different forms at temperatures above 120℃, so it could be used to make various kinds of things. Takuzo Aida, who led the research, said the new plastic is “strong and recyclable”, and can be used in lots of ways, for example, in replacing single-use plastics. Joaquin Martinez Urreaga, from Polytechnic University of Madrid, called the idea “a promising (有前景的) product to deal with marine pollution”.
41. What is the disadvantage of biodegradable plastics?
A. They’re unable to break down naturally.
B. They use much seawater to break down.
C. It takes a long time for them to break down.
D. The microplastics they produce harm animals.
42. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. The microplastics. B. Separate substances.
C. Small living things. D. Biodegradable plastics.
43. How does the passage show the advantages of the new kind of plastic?
①By telling stories. ②By raising questions. ③By giving facts. ④By offering opinions.
A. ①③ B. ①② C. ③④ D. ②④
44. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell the value of plastic. B. To show the products of plastic.
C. To introduce a new kind of plastic. D. To explain the problems of plastic.
45. What’s the proper structure of the passage?
A. ①②/③/④ B. ①/②③/④ C. ①/②/③④ D. ①②③/④
四、任务型阅读:(共10小题,每小题1.5分,计15分)
阅读下列短文,根据短文中的信息完成文后的表格。(每空一词)
After-school activities can be a wonderful thing and continue our children’s education through the school holidays. However any old activity does not do the right job, every activity should be useful and helpful and of course, enjoyable. So what matters when we make the decision as to what our youngster is going to take part in?
Above all, you should know what you expect your child to learn from the activity, for example, learning how to play a musical instrument, how to draw or whatever. Any activity should be a challenge to a child. Taking on the challenge and achievement can help a quiet or shy child become more confident.
Safety must be the most important thing that you should consider of any activity. But remember nothing can be made to be 100% safe and still be interesting. You should talk to an instructor and ask questions before deciding, this is the course you want your child to be part of. Be careful of the activity itself with too much competition because that can cause problems and kill off enjoyment. Do not forget that this is costing you money so try to be sure that you are getting value for it. Of course there’s no doubt that discussing things with your child first is also a good idea.
Parents have different opinions about it though. On the one hand there are those who decide all the things for the child and adults make the running. On the other hand there are those who much prefer to leave the child to choose on his or her own and decide what they want to do during their holiday. Some say that the second method encourages children to better think for themselves and that the first makes them depend more on adults. Only you can decide which one you are and which is the best for you and your child. Remember that you are only young once and childhood will be gone soon forever. All work and no play is not the idea.
Successful after-school activities
____46____
After-school activities can be wonderful and educational. After-school activities should be of some use, help and ____47____.
Purpose
You should know what your child is ____48____ to learn if he or she takes part in an activity. Challenging activities and achievement can ____49____ a quiet or shy child’s confidence.
Safety
It’s always ____50____ that there is some danger in different activities.
Ask an instructor for advice before making decisions.
____51____ activities with too much competition.
Discuss things with your child first.
Two types of parents
Some parents believe ____52____ should be decided for the child, and that makes their child more dependent on.
Others let the child make his or her own ____53____ and decisions making them an independent child.
Conclusion
Precious childhood, once gone, ____54____ come back.
All work ____55____ play is not the good idea.
五、综合填空:(共10小题,每小题1.5分,计15分)
根据短文内容,在横线上填上适当单词,使短文完整、通顺;给出单词的空格不限一词,没有给出单词的空格限一词。
People need to drink enough water every day. Sometimes, you might not finish drinking your glass of water before ____56____ (go) to bed. You might want to drink it the next morning. ____57____ have you ever wondered if it is still safe to drink?
“If you have clean water in ____58____ clean glass, you’re fine to drink it for a day or two,” Kellogg Schwab from the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute in the US told Times.
But you may find that it ____59____ (taste) strange. That’s because after about 12 hours the carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the air reacts with the water in your glass, slightly lowering the PH level of water.
Also, there might be more microorganisms (微生物) in your water if you leave it out overnight. Microorganisms grow much ____60____ (quick) at room temperature. These microorganisms can stick to your glass. They can make you get sick more easily. But if you clean your glasses very often, this ____61____ (not be) a problem.
In countries like the US and UK, people often drink water directly from the tap. This is OK—however, tap water can’t be stored for a long time. Most experts say that tap water has a shelf life (保存期限) of six months, according to Zane Satterfield from West Virginia University, US. After six months, there is less chlorine (氯) in the water and bacteria (细菌) start to grow. You’d better ____62____ (not drink) the water, or you may get sick.
What about plastic water bottles? Schwab said people should be careful with ____63____. If you leave a bottle of water in the sun or a car ____64____a long period of time, the plastic produces a chemical ____65____ (call) BPA. This chemical can cause heart disease.

A ①②/③/④ B. ①/②③/④ C. ①/②/③④ D. ①②③/④

【41题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Biodegradable plastics can break down naturally, but the new problem is they can not break down completely in the sea. Instead, they break down into very small pieces called microplastics, which are often eaten by fish, birds and other animals. The microplastics are known to be harmful.”
根据“Unlike other biodegradable plastics, the new plastic fully dissolves (溶解) in salty seawater. When the new plastic dissolves, it breaks up into the separate substances (物质). And then small living things in seawater can break them down completely.”

【答案】例文:
Growing up
Growing up is like a journey. I’ve learned a lot on the way.
First, I learned about the world through books and the Internet. For example, I read stories to know different cultures. Also, my parents taught me to be kind, my friends shared fun ideas, and my teachers helped me with studies. Second, I had problems, but I solved them. Once, I felt worried about exams. I talked to my teacher and practiced more. Then I got better. When I argued with a friend, we discussed it and became closer. Finally, I feel happy and proud. Growing up has challenges, but I become stronger. I know every step helps me grow.
In all, this journey makes me confident for the future.
