B While Romano’s classmates were beginning their college life, the 19-year-old Croatian young man had different dreams. In Croatia, taking a gap year is not as common as in other countries, but Romano decided to take a break for a year or two after high school and try volunteering in Africa. Upon arrival in Arusha, Tanzania, Romano found a volunteering project through an organization. Now he helps poor children and teaches them English and math. These children are not abandoned. They come from low-income families and any help is welcome. There is no soap or running water in the school, and to learn English, the children depend on volunteers because there are not enough qualified teachers. “The children don’t have much, they are poor, but honest and happy, because they are not aware that there may be something better out there for them. As I was lecturing, I saw the materials they used for learning; worn-out pencils, one eraser for 20 children, torn and printed notebooks, and not to mention clothes and shoes. I will only tell you that uniforms are worn to conceal (掩饰) their clothing and thus to mask material inequality,” says Romano, who was therefore encouraged to launch a charity action to collect donations for children’s necessities. Romano believes that every child has the right to the basics, including education. It is for this reason that he wants to help these little ones. “Even though I was aware of it before, I realized how privileged I am in life just because I was born on another continent. I learned to appreciate more what I have and manage without the basics. As a result, I met a different culture, tested my limits and looked at things from a different perspective — a gratitude perspective,” concludes Romano, hoping that little by little, both he and other volunteers will contribute to positive change through their work. 4. Why did Romano come to Arusha? A. To earn money as a part-time teacher. B. To help children there as a volunteer. C. To promote an educational program. D. To prepare for his college life. 5. What specific challenge do the children face in Arusha when learning English? A. The children lack qualified English teachers. B. They find the lessons too easy for them to learn. C. They are abandoned and lack motivation to learn. D. Their school lacks basic facilities like soap and running water. 6. What can be inferred from Romano’s statement in paragraph 3? A. The children know little about the outside world. B. The children are content with their material conditions. C. Romano believes the children should be more ambitious. D. Romano plans to distribute new uniforms to the children. 7. What did Romano learn from his experience? A. All children should have access lo education. B. We should try our best to make the world better. C. He should treasure his life more and feel grateful. D. He should work hard in college to be more powerful. C Shortly after its opening on the first day of Chinese New Year, The Wandering Earth began to gain momentum In a little over a week, it made 2. 8 billion yuan in the domestic market alone. The film’s popularity and success has come as a surprise to many reviewers especially since there hasn’t been that much success for Chinese-produced science fiction in the past. Many agree that this film will change the embarrassing situation and bring in a new age for Chinese science fiction. As a genre (类型), Chinese science fiction has fallen behind general fiction in both the film and publishing industries. Even Liu Cixin’s (the author who wrote the short story on which The Wandering Earth is based) The Three Body Problem — which is currently quite popular — didn’t have many readers until it was translated into English and won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) in 2015. Personally, I haven’t read much of any genre written in Chinese, but I do notice that there aren’t many separate sections of the bookstore devoted to science fiction. I cannot speak for everyone, but some people seem to have misunderstandings regarding the genre. My parents were the type who tried to guide me in the direction of non-fiction and the classics. They believed that science fiction and fantasy were “unrealistic nonsense” and would “rot my brain”. Actually, great science fiction writers do their research. More often than not, one can learn a great deal about science and its possible development from reading science fiction. Sure, some of the concepts may be confusing or technical in nature, but that is also part of the appeal. Things like the Internet, electric cars and tablet computers were first theorized (建立理论) in science fiction before they were invented. The author simply uses a combination of science and his imagination to create worlds different from the Earth of today, from which we can get bits and pieces that can be turned into a reality. The world is changing. There may very well be a time when Earth is no longer able to sustain the entire population. We could be living on Mars or in giant spaceships; perhaps we will be forced to move Earth to a new solar system just like The Wandering Earth. Each of these scenarios has appeared in science fiction multiple times. If we are to be prepared for what is to come, we can look into modern science fiction for a window into the future. 8. Why was Liu Cixin’s The Three Body Problem unpopular initially in China? A. It didn’t win the Hugo Award. B. It was not translated into English. C. Science fiction is an unpopular genre among Chinese readers. D. There existed some misunderstandings of science fiction genre in China. 9. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 3? A. He was uninterested in science fiction. B. He has never read Chinese science fiction. C. His parents didn’t allow him to read science fiction. D. He hasn’t been ready for the future development of science and technology. 10. What does paragraph 4 mainly focus on? A. The practical significance of science fiction. B. Real technologies inspired by science fiction. C. People’s misunderstandings about science fiction. D. Imaginary worlds created by science fiction writers. 11. What does the underlined word “scenarios” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Strategies. B. Perspectives. C. Proposals. D. Pictures. D New psychology research points to the factors that explain why we find particular poems aesthetically (美学上) pleasing. “While it may seem obvious that individual taste matters in judgments of poetry, we found certain factors consistently influence how much a poem will be enjoyed.” Aesthetics, the basis of what we find appealing or not, play an important role in our everyday lives. However, little is known about how we make these judgments. The researchers sought to answer an age-old question “Why do we like what we like?” by measuring what we find aesthetically pleasing in poetry. To do this, the team had more than 400 participants read and rate poems of two genres — haiku and sonnet — with the aim of understanding the factors that best predicted the aesthetic appeal of the poems. After reading each poem, participants answered questions about the poem’s vividness (“How vivid is the imagery evoked from this poem?”), emotional arousal (“How relaxing or stimulating is this poem?”), emotional valence (“How positive or negative is the content of this poem?”), and aesthetic appeal (“How enjoyable or aesthetically appealing did you find this poem?”). Their results showed that vividness of mental imagery was the best predictor of aesthetic appeal — poems that evoked greater imagery were more pleasing. Emotional valence also predicted aesthetic appeal, though to a lesser extent; specifically, poems that were found to be more positive were generally found to be more appealing. By contrast, emotional arousal did not have a clear relationship to aesthetic appeal. “The vividness of a poem consistently predicted its aesthetic appeal,” notes Starr, author of Feeling Beauty: The Neuroscience of Aesthetic Experience. “Therefore, it seems that vividness of mental imagery may be a key factor influencing what we like more broadly.” “While limited to poetry,” she adds, “our work sheds light into which factors most influence our aesthetic judgments and paves the way for future research investigating how we make such judgments in other fields.” 12. What did the researchers ask the participants to do? A. Write the aesthetic appeal of poems. B. Evaluate poems of haiku and sonnet. C. Explain factors of emotional valence. D. Ask questions about the poem’s vividness. 13. What can we know from paragraph 4? A. Poems with more negative content are more appealing. B. Emotional arousal is negatively related to aesthetic appeal. C. Emotional valence is the most important predictor of aesthetic appeal. D. Vividness of mental imagery has the strongest connection with aesthetic appeal. 14. What does Start agree with? A. The finding is only applicable to poetry. B. The research has little value for understanding aesthetics. C. Emotional valence should be further studied in other art forms. D. The research will help explore aesthetic judgments in other fields. 15. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To introduce different types of poems. B. To discuss the importance of aesthetics. C. To show the findings of aesthetic appeal. D. To persuade people to admire the poems. Tips for Choosing a Career Choosing a career that you’ll probably do for the rest of your working life isn’t always easy. ____16____ Here are some tips to help you decide. My initial motive was simple: I needed to fulfill community service hours required for graduation. However, what started as a mere obligation soon turned into a journey of meaningful personal growth and understanding. Upon my first visit to the shelter, I was immediately struck by the number of animals in need and the obvious sense of urgency among the staff and volunteers. Dogs barked eagerly from their cages, while cats paced restlessly. The shelter manager, Mrs Clark, a veteran in animal rescue, guided me through the orientation process. She detailed the daily tasks which included feeding the animals, cleaning their living spaces, and, most importantly, spending time socializing with them. It was clear from the beginning that this work would demand more than just my time; it required compassion and dedication. As weeks turned into months, my connection with the animals deepened. I learned to recognize their unique personalities and needs. Some were shy and withdrawn, needing much more time to engage, while others were excited and playful from the start. The more time I spent at the shelter, the more I realized how each interaction with an animal was a chance to provide them with a sense of security and love — a small comfort in their uncertain world. The responsibilities I held at the shelter also grew with time. Mrs Clark trusted me with more complex tasks such as administering medication and assisting in the adoption process. This trust not only boosted my confidence but also showed the importance of my role in these animals’ lives. The gratitude I saw in both the animals’ and adopters’ eyes was rewarding. As my senior year began I took on even greater responsibilities at the shelter. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Reflecting on my time at the shelter, I realize how much I have grown, not just in skills but also in spirit. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 河北枣强中学2025学年高二年级下学期期末一考试英语学科试题 本试卷满分150分,考试用时125分钟。 1. I am an 18-year-old Chinese girl. My mother tongue is Chinese, but I speak French and English fluently. I should point out that I once worked as a part-time receptionist in a hotel, so I am used to dealing with members of the public. I enjoy contact with people, and I am told I have a good telephone manner. I feel I have the relevant qualities and skills you require, so I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I am available for interview at any time, and I look forward to hearing from you. As my senior year began, I took on even greater responsibilities at the shelter. Mrs Clark appointed me as a volunteer coordinator, a role that involved training new volunteers. This position challenged me to develop leadership skills and learn how to manage a team effectively. Each day presented new challenges, from coordinating fundraising events to handling the delicate situations of animals in distress. My ability to make quick, compassionate decisions grew, as did my commitment to the welfare of the animals and the shelter. Reflecting on my time at the shelter, I realize how much I have grown, not just in skills but also in spirit. The experience has instilled in me a lifelong commitment to animal welfare and has influenced my decision to pursue a career in animal medicine. The shelter has taught me about warmth, the impact of small acts of kindness, and the harmonious connection between humans and animals. This journey has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, shaping me into a more empathetic and dedicated individual.
