二、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题1.5分,满分22.5分)
A
I took up baking(烘焙) when I was twelve. At that time I was working on my school bakery project with my classmates. I tried a few times, but I wasn't very successful. My parents advised I learn from my grandmother, who later gave me her recipe(食谱) and instruction as well. After two years' practice, I was able to make delicious bread. I have come to realize making bread means a lot to me although it takes a long time.
To make bread, others usually use quick-rise yeast(酵母), but I don't. Every Saturday morning, after mixing proper amount of water with flour, sugar etc., I take time to wait for the dough to rise. This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.
Baking does require great patience. In my hands, the dough is slowly growing. It's becoming softer. I can feel the change, which connects me to something quite different from the modern way of living. To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience. It certainly takes more time than buying bread from a store, but I enjoy it.
I' ve stuck with my grandmother's recipe without making any change. Now this tradition has continued for years. Sometimes, in order to fit it in, I have to change my schedule. But I have never considered giving it up.
By the time my children get home from school, the bread has been baked and cooled. They step into the house and the first thing they do is to take a deep breath of the warm, honeyed air. My bread-baking has also helped them to slow down and understand the value of taking their time and leading an unhurried life.

Two years ago, I was sitting in my car waiting in a long line for a toll (通行费)station. When I finally reached the station, the toll station worker told me that the person in front had paid for me and I was free to go. I was so shocked. I didn't need to save the 5 dollars. I would never know who he was. I was tired by the heavy traffic and the long line, and that behavior was surprising and unbelievable, which really touched my heart. So I decided to pay for the next car waiting in line.
The first time I tried to pay forward the toll, I kept looking into my rear view mirror(后视镜) to see who I'd be paying for. In the mirror, I saw a tired looking taxi driver. And I felt satisfied that my money would be going to a good place. But before we got to the toll station, the taxi driver had suddenly changed his way and now there was someone else behind me. She looked upset and was gesturing (举止) angrily in a conversation with her friend. I wasn't willing to be paying for a woman like that and was certainly judging her by what I was seeing in the mirror. Anyway, I paid the toll for both of us and left.
Thirty seconds later I was surprised to hear a honk (鸣笛声). It was the woman and her friend waving at me from the other way! She looked cheerful and happy. She wasn't what I thought she was like. You must have read or heard of the sad love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two singing opera in English instead of speaking poetic Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》), written by Cao Xueqin (1715——1763). Now the book has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performance came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan in 2017.
Many of the opera's creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights (剧作家). Their understanding of both cultures helped them change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But opera writer David Henry Hwang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a sad love story that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings. He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin showed up on stage, there was usually water around her on the stage.
The creators considered it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audiences. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to“have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born.”
( )21. Where was the opera first performed?
A. In Beijing. B. In Changsha.
C. In San Francisco, US. D. In Wuhan.
( )22. What do we know from Paragraph 4?
A. The book only tells about the rise of Jia family.
B. David turned the sad story into a happy one.
C. The book has at most seven characters in total.
D. The book was originally rich in characters.
( )23. Why did the art director use water around Lin?
A. To help the audience better understand Lin's character.
B. To make the stage more beautiful and attractive.
C. To show the importance of water in Chinese culture.
D. To suggest the sad ending of Lin and Jia.
( )24. What do creators of the opera think of their job?
A. Difficult and unbelievable. B. Stressful and tough.
C. Painful and challenging. D. Meaningful and satisfying.
( )25. What is the best title of this passage?
A. The Classic Chinese Novel A Dream of Red Mansions
B. Change a Chinese Classic into a Foreign-language Novel

It's my honor to be here to give a speech. As the high school entrance exam is approaching, I'd like to share some ways to improve our review efficiency.
First, make a study plan. It helps us arrange time properly and cover all subjects. Second, develop good habits. Go to bed early and get up early. Also, take exercise regularly to keep healthy. What's more, keep a positive attitude. No matter how difficult the problems are, believe we can solve them.
Let's work hard together and achieve good results in the exam.
Thank you for listening.
