These are the galleries you need to add to your must-visit list. Royal Academy of Arts (RA), London Not your standard gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts is led by artists to promote not just the appreciation of art, but its practice. It is world-famous for hosting some exhibitions that get everyone talking. Besides, what sets the RA apart is its engagement with the public through participatory experiences, allowing visitors to not only view art but become part of it in innovative ways. Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich Sitting on the edge of the University of East Anglia’s campus, the Sainsbury Centre holds a collection of remarkable works of art spanning over 2,000 years. Inside the seminal Norman Foster building, you’ll find artworks from around the world, including some stunning pieces of European modern art by Degas, Francis Bacon, and Alberto Giacometti. Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Yorkshire Tearing up the rulebook when it comes to how we traditionally view art, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park strives to break down barriers by showing works from British and international artists in the open air. Set in hundreds of acres of West Yorkshire parkland, you’ll see sculptures by some of the leading artists of the 20th century. Whitworth, Manchester After a sky-high £15 million development, the Whitworth is becoming one of the premier galleries in the north of England. Making full use of its picturesque park setting, the gallery has a beautiful art garden and a sculpture terrace (露台), all waiting to be explored. Inside the gallery, you can view an exciting programme of ever-changing exhibitions. 1. What is special about the Royal Academy of Arts? A. It offers interactive experiences. B. They are small in scale. B. They offer outdoor settings. C. They feature long-standing works. D. They host exhibitions on an annual basis. 3. Where is the text probably taken from? A. An art textbook. B. An art student’s paper. C. A personal travel blog. D. A travel guidebook. A 2. B 3. 根据Royal Academy of Arts (RA), London部分中“It is world-famous for hosting some exhibitions that get everyone talking. Besides, what sets the RA apart is its engagement with the public through participatory experiences, allowing visitors to not only view art but become part of it in innovative ways.(它以举办一些让每个人都在谈论的展览而闻名于世。此外,RA的独特之处在于它通过参与式体验与公众互动,让参观者不仅可以观看艺术,还可以以创新的方式成为艺术的一部分)”可知,皇家艺术学院的特别之处在于它提供的是一种互动体验。故选A项。 根据Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Yorkshire部分中“Tearing up the rulebook when it comes to how we traditionally view art, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park strives to break down barriers by showing works from British and international artists in the open air.(当谈到我们传统上如何看待艺术时,约克郡雕塑公园打破了规则,通过在露天展示英国和国际艺术家的作品,努力打破障碍)”和Whitworth, Manchester部分中“Making full use of its picturesque park setting, the gallery has a beautiful art garden and a sculpture terrace (露台), all waiting to be explored.(画廊充分利用其风景如画的公园环境,拥有一个美丽的艺术花园和一个雕塑露台, 所有这些都有待探索)”可知,约克郡雕塑公园和惠特沃斯画廊的共同之处在于它们都提供户外环境。 通读全文,并根据第一段“With such a strong artistic heritage, it’s no surprise that England knocks it out of the park when it comes to world-class art galleries. These are the galleries you need to add to your must-visit list.(拥有如此强大的艺术遗产,英国在世界一流的艺术画廊中脱颖而出也就不足为奇了。这些是你需要添加到你的必游列表的画廊)”可知,这段文本很可能摘自一本旅行指南。故选D项。 B By the middle of the last decade, I had been studying Indian Butterflies for over 20 years. However, I had never observed butterflies at high altitudes in the trans-Himalayan habitat. So, in 2015, I decided to visit Ladakh to search for butterflies. My first “butterflying” visit to Ladakh was in June 2016, then in July of the same year, followed by another visit in August 2018. For these visits, I charted out a two-week schedule on each occasion. I covered some of the well-known locations. Each habitat we explored had its unique mix of butterfly species. By trickling streams and wet areas, we found Small and Dusky Green Underwings, along with numerous Meadowblues, all part of the Blues family. In alpine meadows, countless white and yellow butterflies from the Yellows and Whites family fluttered (翩翩飞舞) about. More than once, I’d spot a white or yellow butterfly flying across the meadow, and chase after it, only to find myself out of breath in Ladakh’s thin air while the butterfly gracefully flew away. Once, I chased a Butler’s Dwarf butterfly for 15 minutes, managing only a few photos before it disappeared. Another time, I spotted dozens of Clouded Yellow butterflies in an alpine meadow. I spent half an hour chasing them, only for them to fly away each time. Over the course of multiple visits to Ladakh for butterfly observation, I’ve had the remarkable opportunity to photograph more than 40 “lifers” — species I encountered for the very first time. These discoveries have added valuable knowledge to the field and led to the publication of two research papers in the “Journal of Threatened Taxa.” In addition to this, І partnered with the Snow Leopard Conservancy to create a small booklet showcasing 50 butterfly species found in Ladakh, with the goal of raising awareness and promoting butterfly watching as a unique and sustainable activity. This initiative aims to inspire both locals and tourists to explore the rich biodiversity of the region, while fostering a greater appreciation for Ladakh’s delicate ecosystems. 4. Why did the author decide to visit Ladakh? A. To survey butterflies at high altitudes. B. To search for butterfly habitats. C. To carry out a travel schedule. D. To recommend tourist attractions. 5. Which best describes the author’s chasing butterflies? A. Challenging and fascinating. B. Scary and exciting. C. Embarrassing and amusing. D. Dangerous and interesting. 6. What is the author’s purpose of making a booklet? A. To document insect species in India. B. To encourage eco-aware exploration. C. To promote local tourism in Ladakh. D. To compare butterfly research findings. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Uniqueness of Butterflies B. A Fascinating Journey C. Biodiversity in Ladakh D. A Fluttering Discovery 【答案】4. A 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段“However, I had never observed butterflies at high altitudes in the trans-Himalayan habitat. So, in 2015, I decided to visit Ladakh to search for butterflies.(然而,我从未在高海拔的跨喜马拉雅栖息地观察过蝴蝶。所以,在2015年,我决定去拉达克寻找蝴蝶)”可知,作者决定访问拉达克是为了在高海拔地区观察蝴蝶。故选A。 根据第三段“More than once, I’d spot a white or yellow butterfly flying across the meadow, and chase after it, only to find myself out of breath in Ladakh’s thin air while the butterfly gracefully flew away. Once, I chased a Butler’s Dwarf butterfly for 15 minutes, managing only a few photos before it disappeared. Another time, I spotted dozens of Clouded Yellow butterflies in an alpine meadow. I spent half an hour chasing them, only for them to fly away each time.(不止一次,我发现一只白色或黄色的蝴蝶飞过草地,就去追它,结果发现自己在拉达克稀薄的空气中上气不接下气,而蝴蝶却优雅地飞走了。有一次,我追了一只巴特勒矮蝴蝶15分钟,在它消失之前只拍了几张照片。还有一次,我在高山草地上发现了几十只云黄蝴蝶。我花了半个小时追它们,结果它们每次都飞走了)”可知,追逐蝴蝶很费力,具有挑战性;根据第四段“Over the course of multiple visits to Ladakh for butterfly observation, I’ve had the remarkable opportunity to photograph more than 40 “lifers” — species I encountered for the very first time. These discoveries have added valuable knowledge to the field and led to the publication of two research papers in the “Journal of Threatened Taxa.”(在多次前往拉达克观察蝴蝶的过程中,我有机会拍摄了40多种“生命生物”——我第一次遇到的物种。这些发现为该领域增加了宝贵的知识,并在《濒危分类群杂志》上发表了两篇研究论文)”可知,作者第一次遇到了舞蝶物种,增加了宝贵知识,说明过程很有吸引力。故作者追逐蝴蝶的过程具有挑战性和吸引力。故选A。 根据最后一段“In addition to this, І partnered with the Snow Leopard Conservancy to create a small booklet showcasing 50 butterfly species found in Ladakh, with the goal of raising awareness and promoting butterfly watching as a unique and sustainable activity.(除此之外,我还与雪豹保护协会合作,制作了一本小册子,展示了在拉达克发现的50种蝴蝶,目的是提高人们的意识,并将观赏蝴蝶作为一项独特而可持续的活动)”可知,作者制作小册子的目的是鼓励生态探索。 根据第二段“My first “butterflying” visit to Ladakh was in June 2016, then in July of the same year, followed by another visit in August 2018.(我第一次“蝴蝶飞舞”访问拉达克是在2016年6月,然后是同年7月,接着是2018年8月)”结合全文可知,本文主要讲述了作者去拉达克高海拔地区观察蝴蝶,描述了追逐蝴蝶的过程以及感受。 D。 C It’s one of the most common questions adults ask children: what do you want to be when you grow up? Although childhood is supposed to be fun, kids also discuss important topics regarding their futures. Now, a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status and education often set themselves up for success as they age. The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to reveal a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace. Rodica Damian, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Houston, and other researchers discovered that as children grow up, their goals naturally begin to change. However, as some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more involved in the community or helping others. During the study, researchers compared how their goals evolved as children moved from adolescence to adulthood and how a person's goals impacted their success in school and as an employee later on. Overall, a child’s goals focusing on their education and future status were the most consistent predictors of income in adulthood. Simply, when a child dreams big about doing well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately paint a picture of how successful these children will be. So, the message is simple: dream big and dream of success, kids! Those goals can drive you to success when you grow up! “Our work proves a strong connection between a child’s life goals, educational achievement, and future occupational outcomes. This information is valuable for parents and educators who can use it to encourage children to set ambitious goals. Additionally, it helps develop strategies to support individuals in achieving their goals and reaching their full potential,” Damian concludes. 8. What does the study mainly focus on? A. Why children change their dreams over time. B. Whether childhood goals re late to future success. C. How childhood education determines future career. D. What impact early experiences have on characters. 9. Which of the following goals remains strong as children grow up? A. Connecting with others. B. Achieving academic success. C. Hunting for a high-salary job. D. Improving personal social status. 10. What message does the author convey in paragraph 3? A. Future careers is determined by Childhood achievements. B. Childhood ambition is potentially connected with success. C. Setting small goals is more beneficial than dreaming big. D. Adjusting goals can create new opportunities for success. 11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph? A. To summarize learning strategies. B. To offer suggestions for future studies. C. To stress the significance of the study. D. To point out the limitations of the study. B 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“Now, a new study finds that children who set big goals regarding their future status and education often set themselves up for success as they age. (现在,一项新的研究发现,设定关于未来地位和教育的大目标的孩子,随着年龄的增长,往往会为自己的成功奠定基础。)”以及第二段中“The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, are the first to reveal a connection between life goal development and future success in school or the workplace. (这项发表在《人格与社会心理学杂志》上的研究首次揭示了生活目标的发展与未来在学校或工作场所成功之间的联系。)” 可知,这项研究主要关注的是儿童时期的目标是否与未来的成功有关。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, as some childhood goals fall away, other goals related to a family stay strong. These include being close to relatives, building more friendships or finding a romantic partner, and even becoming more involved in the community or helping others. (然而,随着一些童年目标的消失,其他与家庭相关的目标依然强烈。这些目标包括与亲戚保持亲近,建立更多的友谊或找到一个浪漫的伴侣,甚至更多地参与社区活动或帮助他人。)”可知,随着孩子的成长,与他人建立联系的目标依然强烈。故选A项。 根据文章第三段中“Overall, a child’s goals focusing on their education and future status were the most consistent predictors of income in adulthood. Simply, when a child dreams big about doing well in school or achieving great success as an adult, these goals accurately paint a picture of how successful these children will be.(总的来说,孩子们专注于教育和未来地位的目标是成年后收入的最一致预测因素。简单地说,当一个孩子梦想在学校表现出色或在成年后取得巨大成功时,这些目标准确地描绘了这些孩子将会多么成功。)”可知,作者在第三段传达的信息是,童年的雄心与成功潜在地相关。故选B项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Our work proves a strong connection between a child’s life goals, educational achievement, and future occupational outcomes. This information is valuable for parents and educators who can use it to encourage children to set ambitious goals. Additionally, it helps develop strategies to support individuals in achieving their goals and reaching their full potential,” Damian concludes. (我们的工作证明了孩子的生活目标、教育成就和未来职业结果之间的强烈联系。这些信息对家长和教育者来说是有价值的,他们可以用它来鼓励孩子设定雄心勃勃的目标。此外,它有助于制定支持个人实现目标和发挥全部潜力的策略。)”可知,最后一段的目的是强调这项研究的重要性,故选C项。 D Over 100 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell asked the readers to do something brave and fresh — “to found a new science”. He pointed out that sciences based on the measurement of sound and light already existed. But there was no science of odour (气味) . Bell asked his readers to “measure a smell”. Today, smart phones provide impressive built-in capabilities based on the sciences of sound and light: voice assistants, facial recognition and photo improvement. The science of odour does not offer anything comparable. But that situation is changing, as advances in machine smell, also called “digitized smell”, are finally answering Bell's call to action. Whereas human vision mainly relies on cells in the retina (视网膜) , smell is experienced through about 400 types of cells in the nose. Machine smell starts with sensors that detect and identify molecules (分子) in the air. These sensors serve the same purpose as the cells in your nose. But to be useful to people, machine smell needs to go a step further. The system needs to know what a certain molecule or a set of molecules smells like to a human. So, the challenge is formidable. For that, machine smell needs machine learning. Machine learning studies the words humans tend to use to describe what they experience when they encounter specific odour-causing things. However, the web has an unimaginably huge amount of audio, image and video content that can be used to train artificial intelligence systems that recognize sounds and pictures. Most people cannot describe smells in word as effortlessly and recognizably as they can describe sights and sounds. So, researchers weren’t able to train really powerful machine learning models. However, things started to change in 2015 when researchers launched the DREAM Smell Prediction Challenge. The competition released data collected by Andreas Keller and Leslie Vosshall, and invited teams from around the world to submit their machine learning models. By 2019, the largest datasets had grown from less than 500 molecules in the DREAM challenge to about 5, 000 molecules. Such progress in unlocking the code of smell is not only exciting but also has highly promising applications, including personalized odour and early detection of disease. The future of machine smell looks bright. It also promises to smell good. 12. Why does the author mention Alexander Graham Bell? A. To stress the application of digitalized smell. B. To prove the current progress in machine smell. C. To illustrate Bell's research into sound and light. D. To offer background information of smell science. 13 What does the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Rewarding. B. Inspiring. C. Demanding. D. Confusing. 14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. It introduces the shortage of smell datasets. B. It predicts the trend in machine learning. C. It explains the use of smell training models. D. It stresses the difficulty of describing smell. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards the machine smell? A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Indifferent. D 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第一段“Over 100 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell asked the readers to do something brave and fresh — “to found a new science”. He pointed out that sciences based on the measurement of sound and light already existed. But there was no science of odor. Bell asked his readers to “measure a smell”.(100多年前,Alexander Graham Bell要求读者做一些勇敢而新鲜的事情——“发现一门新科学”。他指出,以测量声音和光为基础的科学已经存在。但是没有关于气味的科学。贝尔要求他的读者“测量一种气味”)”可知,作者提到Alexander Graham Bell是因为他在100多年前呼吁建立一门关于气味的新科学,因此是提供气味科学的背景信息。故选D项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句子“But to be useful to people, machine smell needs to go a step further. The system needs to know what a certain molecule or a set of molecules smells like to a human. So, the challenge is formidable.(但要想对人类有用,机器气味还需要更进一步。该系统需要知道某种分子或一组分子对人类来说是什么味道。所以,挑战是______)”可知,机器嗅觉要知道某个分子或一组分子对人类来说闻起来像什么,这个挑战是非常要求高的,艰难的。因此“formidable”在这里的意思与“demanding”相近。故选C项。 【14题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“Most people cannot describe smells in word as effortlessly and recognizably as they can describe sights and sounds. So researchers weren’t able to train really powerful machine learning models.(大多数人不能像描述景象和声音那样毫不费力地用语言描述气味。因此,研究人员无法训练出真正强大的机器学习模型)”可知,大多数人无法像描述景象和声音那样轻松、可辨别地用言语描述气味。因此,研究人员无法训练出真正强大的机器学习模型,本段主要讲述气味数据集的缺点。故选A项。 根据最后一段中的“The future of machine smell looks bright. It also promises to smell good.(机器嗅觉的未来看起来很光明。它也保证闻起来很香)”可推知,作者对机器嗅觉持乐观态度。故选A项。 Can’t get to sleep? ____16____ Check out a sleep doctor’s advice on eating to sleep better. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included. One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door. “I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear. I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness. Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope. ”Let’s plant this in the garden,“ she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.” Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference. 注意: 1.续写词数应150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph one: “Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph two: One day,as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky. Mrs. Thompson looked at me and smiled, “You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn’t always happen at a speed we can immediately notice. Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They’re working, even if you can’t see the results right away.” One day, as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. A sense of joy and accomplishment washed over me. That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care had paid off. It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom, so did I in my studies. I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on, I faced my study challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance, my efforts would surely lead to beautiful “blooms” in my future. 词汇激活 行为类 ①充满:(be) full of/ (be) filled with ②注意到:notice/ spot ③带来、导致:lead to/ contribute to 情绪类 ①惊讶的:amazed/ surprised ②成就感:a sense of accomplishment/ a sense of achievement 【点睛】【高分句型1】When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed.(运用了when引导的时间状语从句和where引导的定语从句) 【高分句型2】Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant.(运用了省略关系代词的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 汕头市潮阳实验学校2024-2025学年度第二学期 高一第二次月考英语试卷 时间120分钟 满分130分 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A 、B 、C 和D) 中,选出最佳选项,并在 答题卡上将该选项涂黑。(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) A With such a strong artistic heritage, it’s no surprise that England knocks it out of the park when it comes to world-class art galleries. These discoveries have added valuable knowledge to the field and led to the publication of two research papers in the “Journal of Threatened Taxa.” In addition to this І partnered with the Snow Leopard Conservancy to create a small booklet showcasing 50 butterfly species found in Ladakh, with the goal of raising awareness and promoting butterfly watching as a unique and sustainable activity. A Fluttering Discovery C It’s one of the most common questions adults ask children: what do you want to be when you grow up? D Over 100 years ago, Alexander Graham Bell asked the readers to do something brave and fresh — “to found a new science”. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph one: “Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
