Although most of the ocean's surface has been mapped, 90% to 95% of the deep ocean is yet unexplored. Why? Conditions are extremely harsh. Scientists define the deep sea as the part of an ocean's water lying 1 the thermocline(the point beyond which sunlight cannot pass). Without sunlight, deep waters are very 2 . Temperatures can range between 32 and 37 degrees Fahrenheit in the deep, while the pressure(压力) can be more than 15,750 pounds of force per square inch(psi) of area. That's 3 the weight of100 adult elephants standing on your head.
One of the first to try to“fathom(理解)” the depths of the ocean was Portuguese explorer FerdinandMagellan. In 1521, he 4 a cannonball-weighted line, hoping to calculate(计算) the depth of the PacificOcean. After it reached 732 metres without hitting the 5 , Magellan declared that the ocean was“immeasurably deep”.
In the early 1800s, many people thought that no animals could survive(幸存) the pressure in the deep. They pictured a sea floor of 6 but mud and stones. When Sir John Ross dredged up some worms and jellyfish from a depth of about 2,000 metres in 1818, he proved that life can thrive at such depths, 7 .
The first true deep-sea exploration was conducted by Charles Wyville Thomson from the H. M. S.Challenger in 1875. His crew discovered many new species(物种) that 8 the intense conditions below the ocean's surface, plus the deepest place on Earth— the Mariana Trench. At the time, they measured a depth of 5miles, but with the 9 of today's advanced technology, we now know the trench is almost 6.9 miles deep.
In the 10 , new technologies, scientific knowledge, and young scientists with fresh ideas will bring more exciting discoveries. To borrow a phrase from Star Trek, fearless explorers will continue to“boldly go where no one has gone before”!

Every year on October 4 the world comes together for animals everywhere. This is World Animal Day.
It started in 1931 in Florence, Italy when ecologists banded together to raise awareness of endangerest species. Since then, the yearly event has been used as a means of connecting “animal welfare(播利)organizations, youth clubs, businesses, community groups, and individuals ...” to raise awareness for their work and fundraise in support of causes ranging from care of working animals to protection of endangered tigers and habitat loss.
Over the years, China has done much for domestic and wild animals. The protection of Asian elephants is a good example.
Asian elephants have become endangered because of hunting for their ivory tusks(象牙). Asian elephants inChina are mostly found in Yunnan Province. These wild animals sometimes eat local farmers' crops. The government has been trying to create a more friendly relationship between local people and wildlife. For example, they ban(禁止) ivory trade and make rules for building separation facilities(隔离设施) to keep away wandering(游荡的) wild animals.
In the spirit of World Animal Day, we all can think more of ways we can better protect both the animals around us and those in the wild.

Save the Sharks!
Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and expensive dish is especially popular 1 southernChina. But do you realize that you' re 2 a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut off 3 fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. This is not only cruer, but also 4 to the environment. Without a fin, a shark can no longer swim and 5 dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean's ecosystem. 6 their numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the 7 in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and 8 in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
Environmental protection 9 around the world, such as WildAid and the WWF, are teaching the public about“finning”. They have even asked governments to develop laws to stop the sale of shark fins. So 10 , no scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!

根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
1 The answer for most people would be yes. But where does our rubbish go?
It doesn't just sit in the rubbish bin. Every day, workers come to take the rubbish from our rubbish bins. They put it into a big truck and carry it to landfills. At the landfill, people sort(分类) the rubbish. They recycle some, burn some and bury(埋) some of it underground.
2 It means that less rubbish ends up in landfills. Landfills can also be bad for the environment.
So many Chinese cities encourage everyone to sort out their rubbish before throwing it away. Put the food in one bag. Put the plastic bottles in another. And throw them in the right rubbish bins. In this way, we can help save a lot of time, money and energy for all of society.
3 So they have higher recycling rates(比率). In Sweden, only 4 percent of household waste ends up in landfills every year. In Japan, people recycle nearly 50 percent of all rubbish.
There is still a lot to do when it comes to rubbish sorting in China. People in the country make about 300million tons of rubbish every year. 4 The rest of it ends up in landfills. Most of it is unsorted. The good news is that many cities are trying different ways to make things better. Beijing will start a new program to mprove rubbish sorting next year. If people sort out their rubbish, they' ll get WeChat bonus points. 5
A. But they only recycle less than a quarter of the waste.
B. The more rubbish gets recycled, the better.
C. Most foreign countries do not have sorting systems.
D. Did you throw anything away today?
E. They can exchange the bonus points for shopping cards!
