We want financial competence to be a part of your life. The more you know, and the more tools you have, the better prepared you will be for life at and beyond Harvard.
Budgeting
With a sensible budget, you can avoid financial stress. If you like a pen and paper approach, you can try a simple tracking sheet like Balance Pro or a more comprehensive budget worksheet like Harvard Assistant. If you prefer a phone app, there are many to choose from and most are free.
Credit
Each year, U.S. News and World Report conducts a survey of students who own a credit card. They identify and address common credit topics such as credit scores, costs of credit, and providing tools. View Credit Survey & Guide here.
Saving and Investing
As a student, this topic may not yet be on your radar, but saving is a key concept for financial well-being. Compound interest is the principle that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future, because it can earn interest up. The longer the time frame for investment, the more you can increase the income. Discover the amount of earnings you could get over a period of time with SEC compound interest calculator.
Events
Throughout the year, we offer events on a wide range of financial competence topics, some in person and some virtually.
First-Year Finance — A session delivered in the fall of your first year which provides an overview of all things about Financial Aid.

My fingers trembled as I signed the pre-medical application form. The watercolor brushes on my desk stared back at me like abandoned friends. I’m Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on napkins while classmates drew cartoons. “Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words haunted me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads.
Then came the school career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”. My hand shook as I wrote “observing details”—something I’d learned from painting flower petals. “That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing how a student turned microbiology notes into textbook illustrations. My lab partner whispered, “Remember our photosynthesis (光合作用) comic?” For the first time, my two worlds didn’t feel so separate.
The real surprise came during hospital volunteering. Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast. “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said. Slowly, my drawing pads filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr. Dawson, our career counselor, helped connect these dots. On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled “Medical Illustration”. He showed me job listings I never knew existed—graphic designers for science apps, 3D modelers for anatomy (解剖) classes. “Your ‘impractical’ skill makes you stand out,” he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops.
Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out—they just multiply possibilities.
24. What can be inferred about Lora from paragraph 1?
A. She had given up the hobby of drawing. B. She was excited about studying medicine.
C. She felt torn between art and medical study. D. She regretted not practicing painting earlier.
25. Dr. Eleanor thought of Lora’ s “hidden skills” as ______.
A. a plus. B. a leisure. C. a distraction. D. a burden.
26. How did Lora’s hospital experience influence her?
A. It helped develop her surgical skills. B. It directed her toward doctor training.
C. It boosted her enthusiasm for abstract art. D. It convinced her of art’s role in healthcare.
27. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Follow the beaten track to success. B. A picture is worth a thousand words.
C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. D. Two strings to your bow light the way.
C
From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.
The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.
You cannot be successful without first developing your self-respect. Your level of self-respect is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-respect are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the long-term victims. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance, blown about with any sudden change in the weather.
You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.
Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.
If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nursing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.
In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.
28. Why are people with low self-respect compared to leaves?
A. They are ready to change their minds.
B. They are easily affected by windy weather.
C. They don’t have the power to face their fate.
D. They can’t exercise control over themselves.
29. What can be concluded from paragraph 5?
A. Whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes.
B. One’s expectation is the key to future success.
C. Thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind.
D. Setting our expectations is essential before taking action.
30. What’s the function of the last paragraph?
A. The proof of the author’s points. B. The conclusion of the argument.
C. An introduction to another topic. D. A comparison between two views.
31. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The secrets of success B. Develop our confidence
C. Success is a choice D. How to achieve success
D
Autonomous systems, including self-driving cars and robots, are rapidly becoming integral to our daily lives. However, these systems often face challenges in visual recognition across various environments — such as bright sunlight, low light, or when objects mix into complex surroundings. Remarkably, nature might already hold the answer to this problem.
Cats are known for their excellent vision in both bright and dark settings. Their eyes are uniquely adapted for different lighting conditions: their pupils adjust to reduce brightness during the day, while at night, these pupils widen to allow more light in. Additionally, a reflective layer behind their retinas (视网膜), known as the tapetum lucidum, improves their night vision.
Inspired by the impressive abilities of cat vision, a team of researchers led by Professor Young Min Song at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has developed a new vision system using advanced lenses (透镜) and sensors modeled after cats’ eyes. This system includes a slit-shaped aperture (狭缝状光圈) that, like a cat’s daily pupil, blocks extra light and sharpens focus on essential objects. It also has a reflective layer similar to the tapetum lucidum, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions.
Published in Science Advances, this research marks a significant step forward in artificial vision, showing improved object detection and recognition abilities. “Traditional robotic cameras struggle to identify objects in busy backgrounds, especially under changing light conditions,” Prof. Song explains. “Our design enables robots to ignore unimportant details, concentrating only on key objects.” Additionally, the system is energy-efficient, as it relies more on lens design than on heavy computer processing.
This innovative technology opens up exciting potential for real-world applications, potentially transforming robotic vision. With this advanced system, security robots and self-driving vehicles can move through complex environments and perform precise tasks with greater accuracy. “From search-and-rescue missions to industrial monitoring, these advanced robotic eyes can assist or even replace human efforts in critical situations,” Prof. Song highlights.
32. How do cats’ eyes adapt to different lighting conditions?
A. By adjusting pupils and reflecting light.
B. By narrowing pupils and letting in light.
C. By using tapetum lucidum in bright light.
D. By focusing tapetum lucidum on familiar light.
33. What is the purpose of the GIST research?
A. To create an advanced lens for eyes.
B. To improve the focus capability of cats.
C. To develop a reflective layer for dark situations.
D. To improve the performance of artificial vision.
34. What is a feature of the new design according to paragraph 4?
A. It operates without consuming energy.
B. It requires extensive computer processing.
C. It prioritizes key objects in complex backgrounds.
D. It enhances the detection ability in dark conditions.
35. Where can the design be applied according to Prof. Song?
A. Improved household care. B. Precise classroom monitoring.
C. Enhanced sightseeing experiences. D. Accurate emergency response actions.
In a conversation, it’s often not just what we say but what we’re asked that makes the difference. ____36____
Imagine you’re at a party making small talk. Instead of the usual “How’s work?” someone asks, “What’s been inspiring you lately?” Suddenly, the conversation shifts. You find yourself sharing thoughts about a book that changed your views or a recent experience that moved you. The interaction transforms from polite little chat to genuine engagement. ____37____ In professional settings, thoughtful questions can lead to better problem-solving and stronger teams. During brainstorming, rather than asking “Any ideas?” try “What would we do if resources were unlimited?” Thoughtful questions like these inspire creativity and innovation.
What makes a question “good”? The best questions come from pure curiosity and a desire to understand, not to confirm existing beliefs or direct conversations towards predetermined conclusions.
____38____ Before asking something, consider what you really want to learn about the person or topic. It’s the difference between asking “How’s the new job?” out of politeness and “What’s been most surprising about your new role?” from real interest.
Open-ended questions invite richer responses. Instead of “Did you enjoy your vacation?” ask “What moment from your trip will you remember most vividly?” ____39____
Context matters too. Questions appropriate for close friends might be too personal for new acquaintances (熟人). Being mindful of relationships and situations helps create comfortable and meaningful exchanges.
The art of asking questions and establishing deeper connections is an ongoing journey. ____40____ Each one is an invitation to understand someone better, to see the world through their eyes, and to create moments of close human connection. Your next question might unlock an in-depth conversation, a new understanding, or even a life-changing relationship.
A. You might not know how to respond.
B. This power extends beyond social situations.
C. Creating powerful questions starts with genuine curiosity.
D. A good question makes the other person feel positive and uplifted.
E. The right question can unlock thoughts and feelings we didn’t expect.
F. This way, you’re encouraging specific experiences and emotions sharing.
G. As you move forward, challenge yourself to ask more meaningful questions.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favorite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hurriedly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son's nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother's face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now with the chocolates in hand, the boy got up his courage to tell the truth.

W: Welcome to Mechai Pattana School in Thailand! It has the environment at the heart of its mission. The students bear the cost of their education through everyday work. Each year, they plant trees and complete 400 hours of community service. It aims to inspire a future generation of leaders. It encourages the students to think outside the box, be creative and learn to fail in order to succeed in the future. It’s a boarding school, so most of the work has to be done by the students. Even the school dinners are organized by the students, while older students serve the meals and everyone is in charge of their own washing-up. The Mechai Pattana School is especially unique in that the curriculum is based largely on the students’ choices, including the teacher selection and evaluation process. The school is still in its experimental stage. Regardless of the challenges, the school demonstrates that quality education can be achieved even under scarce circumstances. Students are discovering that hard work and a little imagination go a long way. A student said, “I really love studying here, because it’s a lot different to other schools. It teaches me a lot of experience that I never learned before. I’ve learned at this school that things can change if we want them to.”

C 25. A 26. D 27. D

D 29. A 30. B 31. C

根据第三段中“Your level of self-respect is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-respect are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the long term victims. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance, blown about with any sudden change in the weather.(你的自尊水平总是基于你对自己,进而对自己生活的控制程度。自尊心低的人不相信自己对自己的生活有任何力量或责任。他们是长期的受害者。他们就像被命运之风摇摆的树叶,随着天气的突然变化而四处飘荡)”可知,树叶随风摇摆,随着天气的突然变化而四处飘荡,无法掌控自己的命运,由此可知,自尊心低的人被比作树叶是因为他们也不能掌控自己。故选D项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.(我们要为自己选择的想法和信仰负责。一个人通常会达到自己期望的水平。我们要为设定自己的期望负责。我们的成功取决于我们的信心水平)”可知,我们是否成功取决于我们对责任的态度。故选A项。

通读全文,结合第二段中“Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.(成功是一种选择,而不是机会。你生来就是赢家。你生来就富有。只要你做出正确的选择,你就能成功)”和最后一段“In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(简而言之,在你生活的所有领域,无论是经济、身体、情感还是精神方面,你都要负责。一旦你认识到这一点,接受它,并坚定地相信它,你就走上了成功之路)”可知,文章主要论述成功是一种选择,强调要培养自尊、对生活负责,指出人们的态度决定是否成功。故C项“Success is a choice(成功是一种选择)”最适合做文章标题。故选C项。

This innovative technology opens up exciting potential for real-world applications potentially transforming robotic vision.
A 33. D 34. C 35. D

故填but。
故填that。
故填a。
故填were impressed。
故填Since。
故填to promote。

Dear Peter,
I feel so delighted to share with you the most important tradition in my family — celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival. Every year on lunar August 15th, we gather for a reunion dinner. When the moon rises, we sit in the yard, enjoying mooncakes, admiring the full moon and sharing stories about the festival. My grandmother always tells childhood stories, which I find particularly magical.
This tradition holds deep significance for us. Not only does it allow us to honor our ancestors and reflect on our family roots and heritage, but it also strengthens our family bonds and reminds us to cherish every moment together, connecting us to our past while shaping our future.
I'd love to host you for this festival someday!
Yours,

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”

Now with the chocolates in hand, the boy got up his courage to tell the truth.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben felt his cheeks turning red. He lowered his head and muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. “This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.” She added that she was moved by how much the boy treasured the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, ducking his head even lower.
Now with the chocolates in hand, the boy got up his courage to tell the truth. He admitted that it was not the cat but he who had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. “I'm sorry I lied to you, Mum. Please take back the chocolates.” He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolates. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolates in his hand, smiling. “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.” Ben laughed in relief. Now he came to realize that honesty is really the best policy.
