Nowruz, which means a new day, is a holiday marking the arrival of spring and the first day of the year in Iran, whose solar calendar begins on March 21st.
When is Nowruz and how is it celebrated?
Nowruz is celebrated on March 21st every year. Many people start getting ready for this special day weeks in advance. They dance and fill containers with water at home to bring good health and remove bad luck.
On the last Wednesday before Nowruz, many people celebrate Chaharshanbe Suri. On this night, they jump over fires or go to doors knocking spoons to scare away bad luck. Some people also bring gifts for the spirits of the dead, who they believe visit before the spring celebration begins.
Nowruz is a spring festival that focuses on new growth and new life. People celebrate with seeds and eggs. Families set up tables covered with seven special items that start with the letter“s” in Farsi, called haft-seen. These tables can also include eggs, mirrors, and poetry.
Who celebrates Nowruz?
It’s also an official holiday in Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Besides, it’s widely celebrated in places with Persian communities like India.
In 2009, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)listed the holiday on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, stating that it“promotes values of peace and unity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighborliness”.

Born in 2001, He Fuqu graduated with a degree in elderly services. He began her career at 19 as an intern (实习) caregiver. In March 2023, He joined her current company and quickly advanced to become the youngest director at the nursing home.
“Most of the managers at our nursing home are quite young, with the oldest being under 30,” He said, explaining that they focus on creating an active and elderly-friendly environment.
And it works. He has observed that the bright young leaders have brought positive changes to the industry. While traditional nursing homes primarily focus on providing basic care and essential services, her current institution goes further. The young team not only ensures that residents’ (住客的) basic needs are met but also prioritizes (优先处理) their mental well-being. Alongside daily activities like singing and crafting, He organizes special events such as afternoon teas and games for the elderly.
He’s nursing home currently cares for 25 elderly residents, most of whom cannot live independently, or are not good at expressing themselves, but they also long for more interactions and emotional connections. He’s active personality helps her easily connect with the residents, earning their trust. For example, during a Chinese New Year, He had to stay at the nursing home for work, marking her first time away from her family for the holiday. One elderly woman gave her a red envelope and a bag of candy, despite her polite refusal.
In addition, He revised the nursing care level chart to better match the services provided. “This adjustment helps meet the residents’ needs more effectively,” He explained.
Working in a nursing home, He has encountered the realities of aging and death long before most people in their 20s even consider them. At first, He would panic when calling for an ambulance during emergencies (紧急情况), but now, she acts with ease. “Getting old, dying... it’s just life. We should make peace with it,” He said.
24. What is special about He’s nursing home?
A. It has a young management team.
B. It focuses more on basic services.
C. It creates an expensive environment.
D. Its activities are limited to mental ones.
25. How does He work with the elderly residents?
A. By cheering them up during festivals.
B. By building relationships with them.
C. By meeting their many material needs.
D. By connecting them with each other.
26. Which of the following can best describe He?
A. Grateful and athletic. B. Confident and fair.
C. Curious and serious. D. Lively and expert.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The Challenges of Aging
B. The Life of an Intern Caregiver
C. A Young Leader in Elderly Care
D. Innovations in Nursing Home Services

An experiment in central Mexico brings hope for the important winter habitat of millions of moving monarch butterflies (帝王蝶). When scientists planted hundreds of young oyamel firs (冷杉) about 100 kilometers from their native habitat, they weren’t sure how many trees would survive. Today, researchers report in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change that most are growing well. Even at 3,800 meters above sea level, high above where they usually grow, nearly 70% of the young trees have survived at least three years.
Every fall, monarch butterflies move from southern Canada to the mountains of central Mexico. They sleep through the winter only on the oyamel firs. Thousands might gather on a single branch. However, the forests and the butterflies are in peril. Monarch butterflies’ populations continue to drop, and due to climate change, oyamel firs are expected to almost disappear by 2090.
“We need to move the forests to a higher location,” says Cuauhtémoc Sáenz-Romero, a forest geneticist in Mexico. Oyamel firs, growing between 2,400 and 3,500 meters, need cold mountain air to survive. The cold at higher places also slows the metabolism (新陈代谢) of butterflies, making them survive the long winter. As central Mexico gets warmer, new generations of oyamel firs will likely be moved higher.
Sáenz-Romero’s team collected oyamel fir seeds from 3,100 to 3,500 meters in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and grew them in a nursery (苗圃). They planted around 960 trees at four locations on the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Three years later, the higher location the trees were planted at, the smaller and shorter they were. However, many survived their first year, indicating long-term survival.
Turning the experiment into reality would face many challenges, including getting the community’s and government’s support. And even if the trees can survive, another question remains: Will the monarch butterflies find them? During the winter of 2023-2024, some large monarch groups didn’t sleep through the winter in the reserve.
28. What do we know about the experiment of planting oyamel fir trees?
A. It would help monarch butterflies fly farther.
B. It would benefit monarch butterflies’ habitat.
C. It focused on the monarch butterflies’ food.
D. It was carried out by Mexican locals every fall.
29. What does the underlined word “peril” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Danger. B. Harmony. C. Balance. D. Safety.
30. What can we infer from the result of the tree-planting?
A. The trees planted in low places grew slowly.
B. Trees at higher locations would exist longer.
C. The trees planted could all survive in the long term.
D. Survival rates decreased sharply as temperature increased.
31. What message does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. There are uncertainties about monarch butterflies.
B. More butterflies are supposed to be needed.
C. Moving oyamel firs to higher places proves hopeless.
D. The government should provide more oyamel fir seeds.

You may remember the things you were told as a child about watching too much TV. In the UK, parents may even tell their kids their eyes will turn square!
Now, a new review of more than two decades of research into the impact of screen time on the brains of young children has found no evidence of square eyes. But the researchers have decided that screen time does have a significant and lasting impact.
A team from universities in Asia and Australia examined 33 studies that used neuroimaging (神经影像) or images of the brain to review the effect of screen time on the brains of children up to the age of 12. This included playing video games, watching television and using other electronic equipment.
The team found that screen time can lead to changes in a number of different parts of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), which has been called our “personality center”. The prefrontal cortex controls things like working memory and the ability to make plans and respond to situations. Screen time has also been found to affect the temporal lobe (颞叶), which deals with memory and language.
The research also noticed that children who use tablets to watch TV and play video games may be worse at problem-solving tasks, while playing a lot of video games and using the Internet for long periods of time were found to affect intelligence scores.
In response to the results, one of the study’s authors, Hui Li, said that limiting screen time is not the only answer. He said this could be effective, but it may also cause arguments. He suggested using other friendly and practical ways, and encouraged teachers and parents to give advice to young people based on the latest research.
32. What is the main purpose of the study mentioned in the text?
A. To explore the history of screen time among children.
B. To show how long children use electronic equipment.
C To prove that watching TV causes children’s square eyes.
D. To understand how screen time affects children’s brains.
33. How did researchers prove the effects of screen time on children?
A. Through long-term behavioral studies.
B. By tracking their performance in school.
C By using brain network and function data.
D. Through different types of video games.
34. Which of the following may Hui Li agree with?
A. Children are supposed to develop meaningful hobbies.
B. Parents should allow children to use mobile phones.
C. Teachers and parents should say no to mobile phones.
D. Students must be forced not to use mobile phones.
35. What is the text?
A. An ad for new research. B. A guide for teachers.
C. A story of a new study. D. A science report.

In 1989, I had just graduated from high school. I had three months before college started, and I found it hard to choose a career path. My choices were limited. I could become a doctor or an engineer, or go into finance (金融) after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, one of the elders in the family, suggested that I be a one-month intern (毕业实习生) at an international company and then a one-month intern at a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a great idea.
I was accepted as a one-month intern at a foreign bank. I learned how the finance world worked, made new friends, and enjoyed the relaxing working environment.
The month passed quickly, and I started working at a leading hospital. This experience was completely different. The hospital was very demanding. The days started at 7 am(compared to 9 am at the bank)and were full of endless duties. It was crazy.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank offered a more relaxing working environment, better working hours, and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and something unpredictable (难以预料的), but the studying and training were very hard. It seemed like business was going to win.
In the last few days of my hospital internship, I was driving home after a very busy night. On the way, I saw an old man and an old woman standing by the road, looking very worried. I pulled over and asked what was wrong. The old man told me that his wife suddenly felt very sick and needed to go to the hospital immediately. Hearing this, I decided to help them.

A 25. B 26. D 27. C

B 29. A 30. B 31. A

根据第一段中“An experiment in central Mexico brings hope for the important winter habitat of millions of moving monarch butterflies (帝王蝶). When scientists planted hundreds of young oyamel firs (冷杉) about 100 kilometers from their native habitat, they weren’t sure how many trees would survive. Today, researchers report in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change that most are growing well. (墨西哥中部的一项实验为数百万迁徙帝王蝶的重要冬季栖息地带来了希望。当科学家们在距离冷杉原生栖息地约 100 公里的地方种植了数百棵冷杉幼苗时,他们不确定有多少树木能够存活。如今,研究人员在《森林与全球变化前沿》杂志上报告称,大多数冷杉生长良好。)”可知,种植冷杉的实验将有利于帝王蝶的栖息地。故选B。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中划线词后文“Monarch butterflies’ populations continue to drop, and due to climate change, oyamel firs are expected to almost disappear by 2090. (帝王蝶的数量持续下降,由于气候变化,预计到2090年,冷杉将几乎消失。)”可推知,森林和蝴蝶都处于危险之中。故划线词意思是“危险”,与“danger”同义。故选A。
根据倒数第二段中“Three years later, the higher location the trees were planted at, the smaller and shorter they were. However, many survived their first year, indicating long-term survival. (三年后,种植树木的位置越高,树木就越小越矮。然而,许多树木在第一年就存活了下来,这表明它们可以长期存活。)”可知,从植树的结果中我们可以推断出,位置较高的树木生长较慢,但存活率显示其可能长期存活。故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Turning the experiment into reality would face many challenges, including getting the community’s and government’s support. And even if the trees can survive, another question remains: Will the monarch butterflies find them? During the winter of 2023-2024, some large monarch groups didn’t sleep through the winter in the reserve. (将这项实验变为现实将面临许多挑战,包括获得社区和政府的支持。即使这些树能存活下来,还有一个问题:帝王蝶会找到它们吗?在2023-2024年的冬天,一些大型帝王蝶群并没有在保护区里过冬。)”可知,最后一段指出实验面临社区和政府支持、帝王蝶能否找到新栖息地等挑战,且部分蝴蝶未在保护区越冬,由此推断,作者在最后一段想表达的是帝王蝶的未来存在不确定性。故选A。
D
C. To prove that watching TV causes children’s square eyes.
D. To understand how screen time affects children’s brains.
33. How did researchers prove the effects of screen time on children?
A. Through long-term behavioral studies.
B. By tracking their performance in school.
C. By using brain network and function data.

上文“When you’re tired, you may turn to your phone. Surfing and using social media feel good as they activate brain reward pathways, causing dopamine (多巴胺). However, minutes spent moving can also reduce tiredness.(当你累了的时候,你可能会求助于你的手机。
下文“Next time you’re drawn to use the phone, instead, stand up and stretch by reaching your arms slowly overhead. Or, pick a song from your playlist for a 3-minute dance that leaves you a little out of breath.(下次你被手机吸引的时候,站起来,慢慢地把胳膊伸到头顶,伸展一下身体。或者,从你的播放列表中挑选一首让你上气不接下气的3分钟舞曲。)”具体说明如何在被手机吸引时去运动;E 项“当你特别想玩手机时能做什么”以提问形式引出下文具体的运动措施,后文“Practice a simple movement challenge(练习一个简单的动作挑战)”回答空处问题;由此可知,E选项符合语境。故选E。
【38题详解】
根据上文“This works for movement too.(这对运动也适用)”以及下文“Next, take a few moments to enjoy the activities, before, during or after the experience.(接下来,花点时间享受这些活动,在体验之前、期间或之后。)”
下文“If you care, let that drive you to find solutions. Act on issues you care about creatively and physically. Worried about the environment? Walk, bike, or join local restoration projects. Care about children or families? Volunteer at after-school programs. Reduce global problems by starting a community walking group to discuss these issues.(如果你在乎,就让它驱使你去寻找解决方案。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I quickly got the old man and his wife into my car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, I went to see the old man and his wife.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I quickly got the old man and his wife into my car. I drove as fast as possible, checking on the woman nervously through the rearview mirror. She leaned weakly against her husband, who kept thanking me repeatedly. When we arrived at the hospital, I helped them register and accompanied them to the emergency room. The doctors rushed in to treat the woman, and the old man held my hand tightly, saying I was their savior that night. I stayed until her condition stabilized, realizing how a small act could mean so much to others.
The next day, I went to see the old man and his wife. The woman was resting comfortably, and her face lit up when she saw me. “You’re an angel,” she said, reaching for my hand. Her words touched me deeply. As I talked to them, I realized something: Though the hospital life was tough, it offered moments of real connection and purpose. I thought about the bank’s ease but found myself drawn to the hospital’s chaos — where every day might bring a chance to help someone. That’s when I knew my choice: I wanted to be a doctor, to be there for people in their darkest hours.
