Here are some ideal sleep music apps to choose from. Calm Calm is one of the most popular sleep music apps and its large library of relaxing and sleep-causing tracks is largely responsible for that. This app offers a free version, but to really take advantage of what Calm has to offer, you had better choose the paid version, which costs $ 69.99 for one year. A lifetime membership is $ 399.99. Relax Melodies Relax Melodies is intended to calm your mind with relaxing sound. The composer is visual and easy to use, and the Discover page gives you access to other app features, like bedtime stories and breathing exercises. Though its free version provides a great introduction to the idea of sleep music, the paid version unlocks a larger library of sounds. Consider paying for it if there're particular sounds or features that really attract you. Headspace Headspace is a feature-rich app designed in a simple way that makes it quick and easy to use its library of sleep-specific music. The Sleep icon at the bottom of the app is easy to identify and leads to a library of options that include Sleep Music and Sleep Radio. It's worth noting that nearly everything in Headspace's Sleep Library requires an extra subscription. Headspace costs $ 69.99 annually, or you can pay $12.99 per month. Pzizz Pzizz offers sleep music tracks you can use at naptime, bedtime, or to improve focus. One thing that makes Pzizz different is its voice narration(旁白)option. If you find the presence of a calming voice to be comforting or benefit from someone helping you to relax your body and mind, then Pzizz is a good choice for you. Male and female voice options are available and the voice is low and calm. It has a free version but you should pay for extra subscriptions. 21. Which app allows you to combine sleep music with breathing exercises? A. Calm. B. Headspace. C. Pzizz. D. Relax Melodies. 22. How much should you pay at least for the one-year subscription of Headspace? A. $12.99. B. $69.99. C. $155.88. D. $399.99. 23. What is special about Pzizz? A. Its voice for narration is fixed. B. It provides low and calm music. C. It offers voice narration options. D. Its focus is sleep-specific music. B Len Collingwood, a clinical nurse specialist, retired on his 65th birthday. He told his wife,Sally, he would“start out as an adventure cyclist.” Four months later, he set off on a 13,000 km cycle ride from Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia to Edinburgh, much of it roughly shadowing Marco Polo’s Silk Road. No sooner had he started out than a snowstorm hit. He hid in his tent, wearing every item of clothing he had packed. At -18℃ it was too cold to go outside to cook. He survived the next 48 hours by eating a massive bag of chocolates. So it is a surprise to hear Collingwood say that he has never feared for his life. “Never. There’s always something to be curious about,” he says. In 2018, he rode from Edinburgh to Istanbul to earn a place in Guinness World Records. “There are very few records a man over 60 can break,” he says. During the trip, he got a dozen flat tyres. But he fixed each one. “I’ve always been serious about purpose. If something is to be done, it is to be done properly. People go forwards and people go backwards. The difficult bit is managing the times when people go backwards,” he says. “Don’t let the moment ruin the whole thing.” He turns 71 this year. He is about to begin the 1,407 km trip to John O’ Groats. It sounds tough but he insists “it’s just a matter of spinning (转) the wheels.” Still, they don’t spin on their own. His daughter — a yoga teacher — has suggested weights to maintain muscle mass. His son, a cyclist, keeps him up to speed on the latest technology. Collingwood is planning new rides in France next year, and beyond that hopes “to spread my wings further. There is peace on a bicycle,” he says. “The joy is the actual doing of the activity. Going further means you’re just doing more of something you enjoy.” 24. What happened to Collingwood when his first journey had just started? A. He lost his way in Mongolia. B. He got trapped in heavy snow. C. He had nothing to satisfy his hunger. D. He had no clothes to protect himself from the cold 25. Which of the following can best describe Collingwood? A. Courageous and determined. B. Generous and demanding. C. Curious and imaginative. D. Unusual and scholarly. 26. How did Collingwood’s son help him? A. By checking his physical condition. B. By planning the routes for him. C. By giving him technical support. D. By accompanying him on the way. 27. What does Collingwood say about cycling? A. It contributes to his health. B. It helps him kill boring time. C. It calls for careful planning. D. It carries his joy forward. C There’s an industry selling a product that is bad for one’s health. A generation ago that industry was tobacco and its product was cigarettes. Today it is the food and beverage industry and its product is sugar — sugar that is being added to food and drink. Public health advocates say two approaches that worked to reduce smoking — consumer education and taxation — are needed to combat over-consumption of sugar. A ten percent tax on sugary drinks was introduced in Mexico in January 2014 and drinks sales there fell by 12 percent in the first year. In France, a tax on soft drinks introduced in 2012 has resulted in a gradual decline of consumption. Norway has been active in taxing sugary foods and drinks as well as education for many years, with good results. In Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia, calls for a tax on sugar have come from a range of public health advocates. A recent Australian study found that placing a 20 percent tax on sugar-sweetened drinks could save more than 1,600 lives over 25 years. And as obesity continues to rise in Asia, several countries such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines are also considering placing a tax on sugary drinks. Not surprisingly, a sugar tax is strongly opposed by powerful groups in the food and beverage industry, such as the AFGC. “Advocates for a tax cannot accept that Australia has had an actual sugar tax for 16 years — it’s called the GST, which is applied to processed food — and obesity has not dropped during this time. In fact, evidence suggests that Australia’s sugar consumption declined significantly (6% for women, 14% for men) from 1995-2011 while obesity continued to rise,” Annison says. Comparing the sugar industry to tobacco is ill-informed and simply designed to grab a headline. There is no safe level of tobacco consumption and it has absolutely no health benefits. All foods can be incorporated (包含) into a healthy diet, and unhealthy diets can also be constructed only from so-called “healthy” foods. 28. What does the underlined word “combat” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Find out. B. Bring about. C. Fight against. D. Research into. 29. What’s the purpose of the examples in Paragraph 3? A. To prove the tax policy is popular. B. To prove the tax policy is effective. C. To show sugar is popular in Europe. D. To show sugar is rejected in Europe. 30. What does Annison think of sugar tax? A. It’s necessary indeed. B. It will produce results soon. C It makes a great difference. D. It serves no practical purpose. 31. According to Annison, comparing sugar to tobacco is ________. A. interesting B. reasonable C. unacceptable D. understandable D Microplastics (微塑料) pollute drinking water. Data now suggest all of us have microplastics in our bodies. Some plastics are harmful. Menake Piyasena, a professor at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and his team worked on a new process. In the past, Piyasena used ultrasound (超声波) to separate microbes and other cells from water. He recalls thinking: “What if we can use the same method to concentrate on microplastics?” The researchers send polluted water down a tube. The tube’s water flows past a transducer, which turns electrical energy into sound energy. It makes ultrasound waves that travel from one side of the tube to the other. When they hit microplastics, these waves exert(施加)a force on the plastic bits. What happens next depends on the size of those plastic bits. Ones less than about 180micrometers across will move to the center of the flow. Larger ones will interact with each other and create an additional force. This sends those larger ones toward the other end of flowing water. The ultrasound treatment removed about four in every five plastic bits from the water. It took about 90 minutes to clean one liter. It cost only about 10 cents to do that. “We think our approach will be cost-effective and simple,” Piyasena says. “Microplastics are a problem worldwide,” says a research chemist Souhail Al-Abed, who works for the US Environmental Protection Agency. In his opinion, this tech is not yet ready to be rolled out for widespread use. “I’d like to express praise for Piyasena’s team that are conducting this research,” Al-Abed adds. “Research does not have all the answers on day 1 or day 2 or day 100. But continuing work by these researchers may find a good solution for the future.” 32. Why did the researchers turn to ultrasound in the new study? A. They proved it was harmless to humans. B. They managed to apply it to other studies. C. It produced enough energy to heat water. D. It enabled them to focus on the experiment. 33. What can we infer about the water treatment? A. It might waste plenty of water. B. It will serve every family soon. C. It could lead to safer drinking water. D. It has been the most effective approach. 34 What is Al-Abed’s attitude to Piyasena’s research? A. Hopeless. B. Unclear. C. Concerned. D. Positive. 35 Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Ultrasound Helps Remove Microplastics in Water B. Scientists Have Found the Cause of Water Pollution C. Efforts Are Made to Turn Microplastics into Energy D. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (催促). One day, Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school. Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes. The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. 21. If you find the presence of a calming voice to be comforting or benefit from someone helping you to relax your body and mind, then Pzizz is a good choice for you. Male and female voice options are available and the voice is low and calm.(让Pzizz与众不同的一点是它的声音叙事选项。 B Len Collingwood, a clinical nurse specialist, retired on his 65th birthday. B 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第二段中“No sooner had he started out than a snowstorm hit. He hid in his tent, wearing every item of clothing he had packed. At -18C it was too cold to go outside to cook. He survived the next 48 hours by eating a massive bag of chocolates.(他刚出发,暴风雪就来了。 根据第三段中“So it is a surprise to hear Collingwood say that he has never feared for his life.(因此,听到Collingwood说他从来没有为自己的生命担心过,真是令人吃惊)”和第五段中“He turns 71 this year. He is about to begin the 1,407 km trip to John O’ Groats. It sounds tough but he insists ‘it’s just a matter of spinning (转) the wheels.’(他今年71岁了。 故选A。 根据第五段中“His son, a cyclist, keeps him up to speed on the latest technology.(他的儿子是一名自行车手,他让他了解最新的科技)”可知,Collingwood的儿子通过提供一些技术支持来帮助Collingwood。 根据最后一段中“The joy is the actual doing of the activity. Going further means you’re just doing more of something you enjoy.(快乐是实际做这项活动的过程。 D。 C There’s an industry selling a product that is bad for one’s health. Not surprisingly a sugar tax is strongly opposed by powerful groups in the food and beverage industry, such as the AFGC. C. It makes a great difference. D. It serves no practical purpose. 31. According to Annison, comparing sugar to tobacco is ________. A. interesting B. reasonable C. unacceptable D. understandable 【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. 根据第二段“Public health advocates say two approaches that worked to reduce smoking — consumer education and taxation — are needed to combat over-consumption of sugar. 根据第三段“A ten percent tax on sugary drinks was introduced in Mexico in January 2014 and drinks sales there fell by 12 percent in the first year. In France, a tax on soft drinks introduced in 2012 has resulted in a gradual decline of consumption. Norway has been active in taxing sugary foods and drinks as well as education for many years, with good results. 根据倒数第二段Annison所说的“Advocates for a tax cannot accept that Australia has had an actual sugar tax for 16 years — it’s called the GST, which is applied to processed food — and obesity has not dropped during this time. In fact, evidence suggests that Australia’s sugar consumption declined significantly (6% for women, 14% for men) from 1995-2011 while obesity continued to rise 根据最后一段第一句“Comparing the sugar industry to tobacco is ill-informed and simply designed to grab a headline. D Microplastics (微塑料) pollute drinking water. 34. What is Al-Abed’s attitude to Piyasena’s research? A. Hopeless. B. Unclear. C. Concerned. D. Positive. 35. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Ultrasound Helps Remove Microplastics in Water B. Scientists Have Found the Cause of Water Pollution C. Efforts Are Made to Turn Microplastics into Energy D. Plastics Have a Bad Influence on Our Everyday Life 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第二段“In the past, Piyasena used ultrasound (超声波) to separate microbes and other cells from water. He recalls thinking: “What if we can use the same method to concentrate on microplastics?”(过去,Piyasena使用超声波从水中分离微生物和其他细胞。 Data now suggest all of us have microplastics in our bodies. Some plastics are harmful.(微塑料污染饮用水。 有些塑料是有害的)”以及第五段的“The ultrasound treatment removed about four in every five plastic bits from the water. It took about 90 minutes to clean one liter.(超声波处理从水中去除了大约五分之四的塑料碎片。 根据最后一段““I’d like to express praise for Piyasena’s team that are conducting this research,” Al-Abed adds. “Research does not have all the answers on day 1 or day 2 or day 100. But continuing work by these researchers may find a good solution for the future.”(Al Abed补充道:“我想对Piyasena的团队进行这项研究表示赞扬。”“研究并没有在第1天、第2天或第100天得到所有答案。但这些研究人员的持续工作可能会为未来找到一个好的解决方案。”)”可推断,Al-Abed 对Piyasena的研究持肯定态度。故选D。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Menake Piyasena, a professor at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and his team worked on a new process. In the past, Piyasena used ultrasound (超声波) to separate microbes and other cells from water. He recalls thinking: “What if we can use the same method to concentrate on microplastics?”(新墨西哥矿业学院教授Menake Piyasena和他的团队研究了一种新工艺。 故选A。 Poetry Challenges to Enrich Your Reading Life Whether you desire for more poetry or simply appreciate striving for reading goals, these three poetry challenges can serve as that push to create space for more poetry in your life. ___36___. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved. Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. She was wondering whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” He took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands.
