From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in Mexico.
Chichen Itza
Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruins. Despite the crowds, few are dissatisfied with El Castillo — a carefully restored pyramid that rises up 80ft and has 365 steps — the largest Maya ball court in the Americas.
Tulum
Built in the 13th century, Tulum was one of the last cities where the Maya people lived and the only one built on the coast. The pyramids here aren’t as large as other Maya ruins in Mexico, but the setting, on 40ft-high cliffs (悬崖) above the Caribbean waters south of Cancun, more than makes up for it.
Cobá
Home to the tallest pyramid in the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá was once one of the most important Maya cities in Yucatán. Located around 30 miles west of Tulum ruins, the city was built in around 600 CE and it eventually grew to 50,000 people living there. Though much of Cobá has yet to be excavated (发掘), travellers can climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul — a pyramid that offers sweeping views over the Yucatán rainforest.
Calakmul
In Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding forest comes alive with birdsong.
21. Which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World?
A. Cobá. B. Tulum. C. Calakmul. D. Chichen Itza.
22. What is special about Tulum?
A. It features 365 steps. B. It was hit by a flood in 2007.
C. It was built on the coast. D. It lies in the north of Cancun.
23. What can you do at Calakmul?
A. Tour the largest Maya ball court. B. Visit the tallest pyramid in Yucatán.
C. Climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul. D. Have a bird’s-eye view of Yucatán.

Every time you charge your cell phone you are benefiting from John Goodenough’s exceptional creativity. After being told that most scientists make their major discoveries long before they hit middle age Goodenough just set off to develop a battery technology that has made our modern life possible.
Lithium (锂) batteries had been invented before. But Goodenough’s invention was a new kind of lithium battery that can store enough energy to power all sorts of electronics and is light and small enough to make them portable And, even better, such a battery would charge and recharge in a matter of minutes — all without exploding.
Born in Jena, Germany in 1922, Goodenough grew up in the United States and majored in mathematics at Yale University and earned a Ph. D in physics from the University of Chicago. He began his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his research laid the groundwork for development of random-access memory (RAM) for the digital computer.
Goodenough was head of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford in England when he made his lithium battery discovery. He joined the Texas University in 1986, and was still teaching and researching battery materials and engineering problems when he won the Nobel Prize in 2019.
Trained in mathematics and physics, Goodenough, who eventually becomes a groundbreaking chemist and materials engineer, does not easily fit any existing classification(分类). “I would like the physicists to think I am a physicist, but I’m afraid they think I am a chemist and materials engineer. On the other hand, the chemists and materials engineers think I am a physicist,” he once joked.
24. What can we learn about John Goodenough from the first paragraph?
A. He is the first person to invent lithium batteries.
B. He made his major discovery at a relatively old age.
C. He got a lot of support and help from the project leaders.
D. He was considered an exceptionally successful young scientist.
25. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Goodenough’s research plan. B. A new kind of battery material.
C. Goodenough’s improvements. D. The advantages of lithium batteries.
26. Where did John Goodenough make his first lithium battery discovery?
A. At the University of Oxford. B. At Yale University.
C. At the University of Chicago. D. At the Texas University.
27. What did John Goodenough mean in the last paragraph?
A. Majors are very important. B. He was not welcome anywhere.
C He was not a good physicist. D. It is not easy to classify his research.

A girl is driving with her parents when they spot watercress growing by the side of the road. Her parents stop and take her out of the back seat. They ask her to take off her shoes and roll up her jeans to help them gather it.
It is the beginning of the story in Watercress, a picture book written by Andrea Wang. The story is based on her childhood. “My parents actually spotted watercress growing by the side of the road in Ohio where I grew up,” Wang says. “And I was horribly embarrassed to get out and gather the watercress from the dirty water. It really made me aware of how different I was from my friends. But for my parents, it brought back memories of their home country and it was a connection to their homeland that they had left behind.”
The feeling of being ashamed of our parents is universal. We’ve probably all experienced that at some point. “I remember walking 20 feet behind my parents when we were walking down the street, pretending that I didn’t belong to them,” Wang laughs.
The pictures in Watercress have drawn inspiration from Chinese landscape paintings, which often have mountains covered in clouds. “It always has felt dreamlike to me when I look at those paintings. And I thought it would be nice to bring it into my book because of its theme of memory,” Wang explains.
Unlike the little girl in the story, Andrea Wang didn’t hear any story about her parents’ childhoods until she was an adult. “My parents were trying to protect me, by not telling me the hardships they went through,” Wang says.
But as a kid, Wang remembers feeling disconnected from her history. “I think it’s really important for families to share what they can,” Wang says. “So that kids know that history and can feel a sense of pride in their culture.”
28. How did Andrea Wang feel when she was told to gather watercress?
A. Excited. B. Curious. C. Scared. D. Ashamed.
29. What does the word “universal” underlined in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Making sb feel a little bit angry. B. Being true at all times and in all places.
C. Needing skill to do or understand. D. Being related to a particular group or society.
30. What does Andrea Wang say about Chinese landscape paintings?
A. They are boring. B. They are difficult.
C. They are beautiful. D. They are expensive.
31. What does Andrea Wang suggest parents do?
A. Avoid talking about hardships.
B. Explain whatever they went through.
C. Tell their kids to be proud of their culture.
D. Share some of their experiences with their kids.

The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones or not? It’s worth deep thinking.
Raleigh International an adventure programme, has announced that it intends to ban smartphones in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen.
As people used to say there was a time when the whole point of travel was to come face-to-face with an unfamiliar world. Learning to adapt to that world was “character-building”, and an unfamiliar land was, in a sense, a training ground.
For example, the great twentieth-century explorer Freya Stark was a lone Western woman in far Arab lands without using a GPS and a mobile. Yet through all her years of travelling—and she was someone who travelled even in her 99th year—she learned to measure herself, and she learned to measure those she met.
We live in a time when there are not many people like Freya Stark. For Raleigh International participants, the communal (集体) experience without smartphones is important. A survey during an experiment of its mobile-free policy (政策) found that almost two thirds of them believed their mental health had improved as a result of being without their phones.
Raleigh International said that talking with people face to face leaves good memories on them, because these memories come from responding to the real people and places around them.
Now, going back to the question, it’s clear that with so many smartphones around, we should take advantage of the opportunity for face-to-face communication.
32. What does the underlined word “ban” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Improve the sales of. B. Change the style of.
C. Stop the use of. D. Bring in.
33. Why does the author mention Freya Stark in paragraph 4?
A. To support the author’s opinion. B. To show the uselessness of a GPS.
C. To explain the difficulty of living alone. D. To introduce a new topic for discussion.
34. What is the finding of the experiment about the mobile-free policy?
A. It places more pressure on people. B. It makes people mentally healthier.
C. It leads to more productive work. D. It makes communication difficult.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Do the Young Like Mobile Phones?
B. Is It Good for Youth to Use Mobile Phones?
C. What Is the Impact of Mobile Phones on Travel?
D. How Can One Start Face-to-Face Cooperation?

I had trained for months, preparing for the marathon that would test my limits and mark a big step in my sports journey. The first part of the run went quickly, and I felt good with my pace, breathing in the fresh air with every step.
However, as the sun climbed higher in the sky, the temperature started to go up, and the run began to make me tired. My legs felt heavier with each step, and I started to feel sick. Suddenly, I felt myself losing balance. Before I realized it, I had fallen onto the hot ground.
Everything was spinning (旋转) around me, but I could see someone coming closer. A runner from the pack (队伍) was at my side. “Are you OK?” he asked with a voice of concern. Without waiting for an answer, he helped me up to my feet and guided me to the medical aid station.
The doctors quickly checked how I was feeling. They gave me water and a break to ease my thirst and tiredness from the heat. As I drank water and put cold pads on my head, I started to feel better. The stranger, Alex, stayed by my side, giving me much comfort.

A
From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in Mexico.

Every time you charge your cell phone, you are benefiting from John Goodenough’s exceptional creativity.
C. He was not a good physicist. D. It is not easy to classify his research.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D

D 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据文章第二段“And I was horribly embarrassed to get out and gather the watercress from the dirty water. It really made me aware of how different I was from my friends.(我十分尴尬地下车,从脏水里采水田芥。这让我知道我与朋友有多不一样。)”可知,当Andrea Wang被要求去采水田芥时,她感到很尴尬,感觉自己与其他朋友不一样,需要在脏水里采水田芥,故感到很羞愧,故选D。
【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第三段划线词universal后的内容“We’ve probably all experienced that at some point.(我们可能在某个时刻有过这种经历。)”
根据文章第四段““It always has felt dreamlike to me when I look at those paintings. And I thought it would be nice to bring it into my book because of its theme of memory,” Wang explains.( Wang解释道:“当我看到这些画时,这对我来说,像是做梦一样,把它放进我的书里是很不错的,因为它回忆的主题。”)”
根据文章最后一段““I think it’s really important for families to share what they can,” Wang says. “So that kids know that history and can feel a sense of pride in their culture.”(Wang说:“我认为家人一起分享他们能分享的东西真的很重要,这样的话,孩子就能了解历史,能体会文化的自豪感。”)”

The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones or not? It’s worth deep thinking.
Raleigh International, an adventure programme, has announced that it intends to ban smartphones in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen.
C 33. A 34. B 35. B
根据下文“in order to enable their youthful participants (参与者) to actually get to know each other a bit, instead of spending their evenings under the tent lit by a phone screen. (为了让年轻的参与者能够真正地相互了解一点,而不是在电话屏幕照亮的帐篷下度过他们的夜晚)”可知,这个项目为了让参与者互相了解,而非沉迷手机,因此项目会要求参与者停止使用手机,由此推断划线单词的含义是“禁用,停止使用”。故选C。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“As people used to say there was a time when the whole point of travel was to come face-to-face with an unfamiliar world. Learning to adapt to that world was “character-building”, and an unfamiliar land was, in a sense, a training ground.(正如人们过去常说的那样,曾经有一段时间,旅行的全部意义就是面对面地面对一个陌生的世界。学习适应那个世界就是“塑造性格”,而在某种意义上,一个陌生的地方就是一个训练场)”和第四段“For example, the great twentieth-century explorer Freya Stark was a lone Western woman in far Arab lands without using a GPS and a mobile. Yet through all her years of travelling—and she was someone who travelled even in her 99th year—she learned to measure herself, and she learned to measure those she met. (例如,20世纪伟大的探险家弗雷娅·斯塔克(Freya Stark)是一个孤独的西方女性,在遥远的阿拉伯土地上,没有使用GPS和手机。然而,在她多年的旅行中——她甚至在99岁时还在旅行——她学会了衡量自己,也学会了衡量她遇到的人)”可知,通过Freya Stark的例子说明没有手机的时代,旅行能促进自我认知和人际理解,即举例的目的是为了支持作者的观点。故选A。
根据第五段“A survey during an experiment of its mobile-free policy (政策) found that almost two thirds of them believed their mental health had improved as a result of being without their phones. (在一项关于无手机政策的实验中,一项调查发现,近三分之二的人认为,由于没有手机,他们的心理健康状况得到了改善)”可知,无手机政策的实验结果是三分之二参与者因不用手机而心理健康得到改善。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The mobile phone might be a great gift, but it is stopping young people communicating with the wider world and doing harm to their mental health. Should the young use mobile phones or not? It’s worth deep thinking. (手机可能是一个伟大的礼物,但它阻止了年轻人与更广阔的世界交流,并对他们的心理健康造成伤害。年轻人该不该用手机?这是值得深思的)”可知,全文围绕“青少年是否该用手机”展开,先指出现状,再通过案例和实验论证面对面交流的重要性,选项C“Is It Good for Youth to Use Mobile Phones (年轻人使用手机好吗?)?”

As the starting gun rang, I found myself among the sea of runners, my heart beating with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I looked at Alex, really thankful. “Thank you,” I managed to say. “I wouldn’t have made it without you.” Alex just smiled, his eyes kind and encouraging. “We’re all in this together,” he replied. Feeling more determined, I chose to keep running the race, even if it meant finishing at a slower pace. Alex, who first thought of running without me, decided to stay with me. Together, we picked up our pace to the finish line, and our friendship started to build with each shared mile. The cheers from the crowd celebrating the crossing of the finish line grew louder and clearer.
In the last few minutes, we ran towards the finish line hand in hand. Though we didn’t cross the finish line ahead of the pack, we received the warmest applause, because we had won something far more valuable — a friendship that was built on the understanding of what it means to support one another in the face of difficulty.
