He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag(时差); it was that Monday morning always began with a team meeting and, over the months, he had grown to hate them. Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden agenda(会议议程); they indulged in (沉溺于) game playing; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough - there was all the moaning afterwards at the meeting like“I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn’t going to say.” As this morning’s meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But, as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. But as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer. He realized, to his amazement, that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations. They were not supporting views which they thought might be popular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas. Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions, based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying. “So, John, are you really saying…” “Susan, do you really think that?” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward?” They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly-acquired talent. As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting. The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.”“All meetings should be like that.”“In future, I’m going to say what I think.” 41. It is known from the first paragraph that Martin . A. just came back from his business trip in New York B. was found to suffer from a serious heart disease during the trip C. had a good time during his fortnight’s stay in New York D. didn’t like his work in his London office 42. Why did Martin hate his company’s team meeting? A. Because it had to be held every Monday morning. B. Because he was tired of hosting such a meeting C. Because he couldn’t control the meeting that was out of order. D. Because the meeting atmosphere wasn’t open and trusting. 43. The underlined part“his newly-acquired talent” in Paragraph 5 means that he could A. still hear the engine noise of the plane though he was back B. clearly predict what the members of the meeting would say C. actually control the thoughts of the members of the meeting D. encourage the members to express their thoughts in words 44. What do we know about this Monday morning’s meeting from the passage? A. Martin made people say what they were thinking immediately the meeting began. B. Martin was angry at the dullness of the meeting at the beginning of the meeting. C. Martin led people to express their real thoughts with the meeting progressing. D. Many members of the meeting played games and told lies at the meeting all the time. 45. It is inferred from the last two paragraphs that towards the end of the meeting Martin would hear such words as“ ”. A. I was thinking of making a suggestion-but I couldn’t be bothered B. I have got an idea on how we could take this forward. I think we should... C. The usual people say the usual things, so I have no other new ideas D. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.(随着会议的进行,他清楚地发现,会议的每个成员都在学习如何倾听其他人的想法。 根据第六段“As the meeting progressed, it was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others. The game playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting.(随着会议的进行,他清楚地发现,会议的每个成员都在学习如何倾听其他人的想法。玩游戏的兴致开始减弱:人们开始更直接地说话;观点得到了更好的理解;气氛变得更加开放和信任)”和第七段“The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking. “That was the best meeting we’ve ever had.”“All meetings should be like that.”“In future, I’m going to say what I think.”(会议结束了。 C If there’s one rule that most parents stick to in the confusing, fast-changing world of kids and media, it’s “No screens before age 2.” As of today, that rule has been thrown out the window. The American Academy of Pediatrics (儿科) (AAP), which first issued that recommendation back in 1999, has greatly updated and revised its guidelines for children and teenagers to reflect new research and new habits. The new guidelines, especially for very young children, shift the focus from WHAT is on the screen to WHO else is in the room. And in doing so, they raise some interesting points about the future of learning from media. For babies younger than 18 months, AAP still says no screens at all are the best idea — with one notable exception: Live video chat. Surveys indicate that families already popularly believe that “Facetime doesn’t count”, or at least that the benefit of virtual visits with grandparents or other relatives outweighs the potential cost of exposing babies to the laptop or smartphones. For infants and toddlers (学步儿童), ages 15 months to 2 years old, there’s limited evidence from a couple of very small studies that they can learn new words from educational media, if and only if parents are watching alongside them, repeating what the video says and/or drawing attention to what is on the screen. In other words, treating a video or an app like a picture book is the best bet. The opposite side of this is that many studies have actually shown poorer language skills associated with earlier solo viewing of “educational” videos. There’s also research that shows language delays in children who watch more TV and start watching earlier. For this reason, the new AAP guideline has changed from “avoid all screens under age 2” to “avoid solo media use in this age group.” For preschoolers ages 2 to 5, there’s more evidence that they have the ability to transfer knowledge from screens to the real world, including early literacy and math. For this age group, AAP recommends no more than an hour a day of screen use. And, just as with younger children, they want care-givers to take part in screen time: “Co-view with your children, help children understand what they are seeing, and help them apply what they learn to the world around them.” 46. What do we know about the “No screen under 2” rule? A. It has met more and more resistance from parents. B. It has proved helpful to children’s healthy growth. C. It confuses parents with regard to kids’ education. D. It has been discarded in line with recent research. 47. What do the new AAP guideline suggest? A. Young children should be accompanied by parents during screen time. B. Parents should be emotionally involved in their children’s raising. C. Young children should watch videos carefully selected by parents. D. Parents should protect their children from too much media exposure. 48. What do families think of live video chat according to surveys? A. It should not be regarded as screen time. B. It helps babies to develop their spoken skills. C. It is not as harmful as playing games on laptops. D. It is a good replacement for video viewing. 49. What do researchers find about kids solo viewing educational videos? A. It promotes their interest in language learning. B. It works no better than reading picture books. C. It prevents their development of language skills. D. It helps them get independent learning skills. 50. What does the author say about preschoolers ages 2 to 5? A. They can understand pretty well what they see on the screen. B. They can learn on their own without much parental guidance. C. They can make use of educational videos develop digital literacy. D. They can relate what they learn on the screen to real life situations. 【答案】46. D 47. A 48. A 49. C 50. E-scrap includes a wide variety of old electronic devices that include large household devices such as refrigerators, air-conditioning systems, smartphones, computers and other consumer electronics. Finding interesting, and cost-effective ways to reuse e-scrap could have many advantages for the environment, while also potentially reducing manufacturing (制造) costs. So far, however, the reuse of e-scrap has mainly been limited to the separation of valuable materials. Potentially, electronic waste could also be used in combination with renewable energy sources to build self-sustainable robots (SSR). Researchers at TU Wien have recently carried out a study exploring this possibility and have developed Scrapino, a robot built from e-scrap that uses renewable energy. The components used to build the robot include a combination of new and old materials recycled from electronic devices such as old scanner machines, printers, robots, computers and toys. The researchers used DC motors, ultrasonic sensors (超声波传感器) that can identify barriers in the surroundings, and LDR sensors that can detect light. In this way, the self-sustainable robot can move around its surrounding environment, searching for the best sunbathing spots in which it can collect energy by using a solar panel as its source of power. After charging its battery to over 50 percent, Scrapino can complete a number of tasks, for instance, greeting students around the university or providing useful information about ongoing conferences, workshops, lessons, etc. Nowadays, the massive production of robots has an impact on electricity consumption. Scrapino is a great example of reusing e-scrap and combining old and new technologies while also promoting lower electricity consumption and a cleaner environment. “SSR will provide a very good learning experience and show that robotics and renewable energy can go hand in hand and serve as a gateway to getting SSR from e-scrap,” the researchers wrote in their paper. In the future, this study could inspire other researchers to explore interesting ways in which e-scrap can be reused or recycled. 51. What does the author want to show us in paragraph 1? A. The abundance of household equipment. B. Advancements in electronic devices. C. The urgency of handling the e-scrap. D. Different recycling methods of e-scrap. 52. Which of the following puts the present reusing e-scrap at a disadvantage? A. The separation is technically demanding. B. The recycled materials cannot meet environmental requirements. C. The recycling processes involve high energy consumption. D. The materials from the e-scrap cannot get fully reused. 53. Why did the researchers equip Scrapino with DC motors and sensors? A. To provide Scrapino with basic mobility skills. B. To understand Scrapino’s source of energy. C. To let them act as the solar panels. D. To assess the surrounding working conditions. 54. What can we infer about the self-sustainable robot from the text? A. It will reform the creation of robots. B. It can be a pioneer to encourage researchers to go further. C. It has the ability to charge fast and steadily. D. It can be put into massive production as soon as possible. 55. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To list the benefits of self-sustainable robots. B. To explain the challenges of reusing e-waste. C. To show a novel way to reuse e-scrap. D. To demonstrate a new way of making use of robots. 【答案】51. But he was the first player to help China grow into a basketball-crazed nation. Kobe's first visit was in 1998, and in conducting basketball clinics (篮球训练营),doing business and participating in charity, he was warmly welcomed in the basketball-loving country. Once, nearly 15,000 people showed up at 9 am for an event at which Kobe was scheduled to appear at 4 pm. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo saw firsthand Kobe's popularity during Kobe's time with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when as captain he led the team to a gold medal. "There were tens of thousands of people on the streets, yelling, 'Kobe! Kobe!' It was unbelievable, just unbelievable," Colangelo said. "It's harder for me to walk around here than in the United States," Kobe once told reporters in China in 2013. “It's uncontrollable. Fans rush you and surround you, and it gets to the point where you can't go out." His last visit was in August last year for the 2019 FIBA World Cup. I’ve been following this discussion with great interest. Al has been widely used in artistic creation, from painting and music composition to poetry and even film production. These Al-generated works often impress audiences with their complexity and creativity. However, I believe AI creations have artistic value but lack the emotional depth of human expression. Art is not just about patterns and aesthetics; it reflects personal experiences, emotions and cultural backgrounds. While AI can mimic styles and generate impressive pieces, it does not create with intent or personal insight. All in all, AI can be a powerful tool for artists but cannot replace human creativity. No matter how technology progresses, mankind will always be unique in the field of art. 【解析】 【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文写作中的评论。要求考生写一篇短文发帖,参与一个关于“Does AI Creation Have Artistic Value?”的论坛讨论。 【详解】1.词汇积累 使用:use→ employ 总的来说:all in all→ on the whole 取代:replace→ take place of 进步:progress→ make progress 2.句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:Al has been widely used in artistic creation, from painting and music composition to poetry and even film production. If you forget to officially drop that course, a “F” (Fail) grade will be registered on your record at the end of the term. If, at a later date, you wish to apply for a job or graduate school where an official copy of your UCLA record is required, it will be to your advantage to provide an impressive academic record Taking Exams Some instructors choose to put previous test papers on library reserve, making them available to all students. These exams, which students commonly use for practice, can give you an idea of how instructors ask questions and what they regard as relevant (相关的) material. You can also access the exams online. 36. I could have imagined on that idea, but I wasn’t willing to say that C If there’s one rule that most parents stick to in the confusing, fast-changing world of kids and media, it’s “No screens before age 2.” As of today, that rule has been thrown out the window. D Electrical and electronic scrap(e-scrap) is now one of the fastest-growing types of waste and is projected to reach 74 million metric tons by 2030. 第Ⅱ卷非选择题(共35分) 第三部分:写作(共两节,满分35分) 第一节阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Kobe Bryant wasn't the first NBA player to visit China. He told reporters, “I watched the country develop from the ground up. I watched Beijing grow. I watched the passion for the game develop. My goal is to develop the country's basketball to a level where they can compete with the best basketball countries in the world,", Kobe said. Kobe was and perhaps remains China's favourite NBA player, and fans in the country were shocked by his death in a helicopter crash in January this year. Tencent, the NBA's digital partner in China, posted a memorial page that drew more than five million visitors in less than five days. Just two days before Kobe died, he posted a short video on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, wishing Chinese fans a happy new year. How sorrowful his fans are when they watch the video again! 56. Apart from being an excellent NBA players, what else makes Kobe Bryant special to Chinese fans? (no more than 15 words) 57. What does the author want to prove, telling us what Jerry Colangelo saw at the 2008 Beijing Olympics? (no more than 10 words) 58.
